Happy New Year from the Decorah hatchery pair up in their favorite bluff trees this morning.
Also looks like we might have a new camera location, see the middle pic below.

New Year all set up in the Forum. Thanks to RRP.
About 8:30 this morning, HD brought a fish to the Spooky Tree in the horse pasture near N1. He ate it all, then was joined for a while by HM. Did I get the names right?

Morning pics from Decorah - It was a busy morning around the hatchery. RT hawk was perched on the pine by visitors center. From the vocals this morning, you could tell who was who and where they were perched. HD was in tree near N2B, while HM was above the cams, an almost adult interloper was perched near HD in a tree near N2B.

Wooops new camera! What new camera? Did I miss a new bulletin? ;D

HD did alot of perching again this morning, before heading down to creek, and getting some breakfish. It looked like a nice size fish.

At the last presentation, John and Amy talked about new camera at Decorah to get views of HM and HD's new nest location and maybe also closer views of the "fishing corner" and bluff area, so perhaps setting up something at the pavilion. Any news from RRP or others who really know what's going on?

STLbf there has been a PTZ camera mounted on top of the pavilion for a few years now.
-
BL, thanks for the pic of the pavilion and clear labels for locations. I knew about the pavilion camera, but since I have never been to Decorah, I'm probably mistaken. If I can find a pic that shows the structure I thought did not have a camera and was close to those bluffs where the new nest is located -- I'll post it. This one is on the Retention Pond side of the creek, and not exactly what I was thinking of. Sigh.
-
STLbf your last pic is from the Pavilion cam.
The problems with viewing HM & HD if they choose to use the top of the bluffs BE nest in 2024 are in my opinion.
1) There's no way RRP is going anywhere near the new nest this time of year even if they wanted to.
2) The base of the 'nest tree' might be located on private property. Permission, Permits and Privacy.
3) It could be logistically challenging to do so even if they could.
I strongly do recall the RRP Navy however. :-*
4) HM & HD could move like Eagles do again in 2025.
5) That "the new nest" is UP in elevation from the available cameras.
6) The nest is I believe tucked into the trees and just out of Genghis Cam's range.
So the N1 cam [@ 1,300 ft away] and Pavilion cam [@ 800 ft away] just can't quite peek at this nest location.
-
STL - I have a friend who has been to Decorah just recently (12/29) to take pics of HM & HD, and also of Mom & DM2. With his permission, I will ask if it is ok to post his pic here showing the new nest.
He says, the new nest is on the other side of the bluffs, and cannot be seen by the pavilion cam on the hatchery side. It is on the slope on the other side, near where they perch on bluff perch.
-
Awesome work from BrokenLug and Lisa on info and pics about cameras and new nest location. The cam ops must be reading our Forum posts, because there's a pretty clear view about noon today of the structure I have been thinking about as a new camera location: see orange arrow in pic below. I believe it also shows up in BL's pics, but without a label, so it might be private property??
However, since the new nest is on the other side of the bluff, a new camera anywhere on the side we are used to won't be of any help for seeing that. It would, however provide closer views of the eagles' activities in the fishing and perching area at the base of the bluffs.
HM or HD perched on the large branch above N1 about 12:30 this afternoon! Thank you for visiting for a closeup. :D
-
STL I think that 'gazebo' is just on the other side of Trout Run on the Hjelle Farm Property. 8)

Looks like you are correct, BL. And how do the property owners feel about having a camera on one of their rooftops? We'll all watch and learn.

Pic is courtesy of Oliver, which I have permission from him to post.
He took this on 12/29, on his visit to Decorah. Either HM or HD to the left, and the new nest to the right.

Lisa, many thanks to Oliver for giving permission to post his pic of the new nest at Decorah. Do you know if the tall trees where either HM or HD is perching are the same ones at the top of the bluffs that we see with Decorah camera, only from the other side (Pond side)?
This morning, the views are all snowy.

Has the "Bluff Nest" been given an official RRP designation yet .. what are we up to N5 ?

A beautiful sub-adult has been hanging around in the pine by the visitors center this afternoon. It flew out and landed in a nearby tree and back to the pine.

Those sub-a eagles are so colorful! Like they are wearing camouflage suits.
Quiet and not much activity this morning at Decorah. Pic of HD or HM perching and a flock of small black birds, maybe grackles, nearby. They are near N1, and a good eagle flyoff right after on the rewind showing the horse pasture but I missed a pic.
-
OK... I continue to perch daily at both the Hatchery and North nests. So happy to see that the North's don't seem to have a desire to move, and hope their attempts at breeding (and they seem to know how to do that well) will be uninterrupted and successful this upcoming season.
Now, onto my confusions about the Hatchery pair and N1. I maybe shouldn't ask this question, and I know all supportive efforts for the eagles are all with good intentions. However, I have been confused from the start about the large number of fish that our human team placed into N1 after maintenance was performed. I have wondered if that "unlikely in nature" abundant deposit of dead fish in a nest, seemed odd to HD and HM when they took a new seasonal view of the nest they enjoyed last season and if that surprising feast of decaying fish confused them too, or stunk so much they decided to find a new rental nest, or take the big leap of building a brand new nest.
Do appreciate the fact that the Hatchery pair seems to understand the value of the LOCATION to FRESH fish and may not move too far away, and will still hang out for us to continue to enjoy from the many excellent cam positions/views that exist in and around the Hatchery. I also suspect that, of the many eagles returning to, or passing through the Hatchery area, there may be some who notice that N1 seems available again, and claim that prime spot next season. Sure hope the geese don't notice the availability too ;)...
Am preparing myself for the snow that keeps missing the Twin Cities in MN so far (yay), but looks as if it may move forward from IA to leave a blanket of white upon us come this afternoon and evening. Hope everybody is enjoying a good entry into 2024 and finding ways to stay warm for those of us living in the colder regions (or savoring storm shelters for those being blasted by rain, flooding and tornados). I absolutely DO NOT miss the 90+ inches of snow we suffered through and relocated (for almost six months) last winter. Meanwhile, I'm fine with just looking at the snow in IA ;D Best wishes to all RRP enthusiasts and supporters!
-
Linda, I'm sure you are echoing the questions that many of us watchers have about the Hatchery pair. The best we can do is watch and learn and trust the eagles. This morning, for example, they are hunkered down in some branchy trees. I'm not sure if on the Bluffs, at the base, or somewhere near N1. Stay warm and safe, everybirdie.
-
Earlier this morning, HM & HD were perched on backside of the lower bluff tree, and an adult interloper flew into tree and out fairly quickly. Interloper is under our eagle on branch.

P
Puff, I hope STL doesn't mind, but I am going to answer your question. :D
Fishing perch is below that 1st bluff, to the right of the white house and shed, that is by Trout Run Rd. There is a branch that has fallen over the creek and HM & HD like to perch on that branch to fish. So, RRP has called that fishing perch.
-
Thank you Lisa. I'll be watching to see it when we get the right view. They're still just staying close to "home". Just building extension out houses.

Cold and mostly quiet at Decorah today. One of the Hatchery pair perched high in a tree at the bluff base for several hours this morning. The Pond has geese honking and swimming. At 3:00-ish, one of the Hatcherys perched above N1 and the other in branchy area maybe near N2B; listen to the geese honking so not far from the Pond.
-
Making the rounds...
E23 Taking up more space in SWFL nest, got an identity on what lunch was yesterday. Thanks.
New soft stuff showed up in NN, no occupants there yet today. But the timing is getting closer, more ideas?
Not even any new prints at hatchery.

I know why the geese are here, they read this in the classifieds in the Minnesota Star Tribune.
2 homes for rent next to babbling brook, surrounded by beautiful farms (trout, soybeans, corn & horses, etc...) great place to raise your family - act quickly they will not last long. ;)
It's nice that the Retention Pond at the Hatchery remains unfrozen at this time of year for the perspective renters. ;)
It hasn't been above 32° F here for at least 14 days. ::)

LOL, BL!
I can't wait to see if one rents N1.
-
Har De Har. ;D Lots of competition for N2B, could be they will take over N1 also this summer.
So what is it that keeps the Pond from freezing over?
-
Picture perfect postcard sunrise over the Hatchery Bluff's this AM. :)
I read that the water that comes out from Siewer's Spring is about 30° F to 50° F year round.
The Iowa portion of the Driftless Region is filled with small streams. Many of the streams you’re fishing rarely get over 20 feet wide. Plus, the banks of the streams are covered in thick vegetation. The streams require finesse skills and the ability to calmly work your way around the water.
Most streams are spring fed, so the water temperatures stay between 30 and 55 degrees all throughout the year. It’s extremely clean and highly oxygenated, so the fish are extremely healthy.
STLbf I believe the water that goes into the hatchery raceways comes in from Siewers Spring / Trout Run and the water that comes out of the raceways flows thru a pipe under the "driveway" into the north end the retention pond. (Or settling Pond).
The water than exits the retention pond from to an underground pipe on the south end of the pond back into Trout Run below the Spring.
2nd Image below.
- Edit - updated N2B Nest Area Map - added Bluff Nest 2024
-
BL, thanks for the info about the Pond's open water. You post the best maps with the most helpful labels!!
Loved the colorful sunrise. And did you notice that the same geese are in the Pond as were there yesterday? :D
-
It looks like the earliest that they take water temp readings from the Trout Run is in April.
Source: https://data.upperiowariver.org/sites/16-tru-10
I used the: Monthly Water Sampling Data for Trout Run.
So basically the water that flows in Trout Run is the water that flows through the Hatchery system including the Retention Pond.
The lowest temp I see was on 04/11/17 @ 41.4° F.
That is not going to freeze. ;D
What the Trout Run water temp gets down to in Jan, Feb and Mar I don't know, but I suspect it remains above freezing in those months also.
In all the years of watching the Decorah Eagles (since 2011) I don't ever recall seeing the pond freeze over. 8)
It's great that the Retention Pond stays unfrozen at this time of year for the local and passing through water fowl especially considering how cold the air temps have been around there.
2nd Image below.
I suspect that the pond is full of all sorts of icky yummy things for the Geese. :)
-
BL, I agree about the Pond never freezing over completely. Ice sometimes forms around the edges, I believe.
-
BL - Excellent nest area map!
-
LisaG1967 good deal safely at your 01/21 nighttime destination we assume. 8)
It is not exactly 'balmy' there, but we'll take it. ;D
Flying the rest on I 10 west well rested to. :)
Don't take the focus off the destination until we're actually there and back home. 8)

My basic understanding of the local hydrology here about.
I could be totally wrong on the Decorah Fish Hatchery Basic plumbing for all I know for sure.
I think as the water flows here it's about the basic gist of it all around here however.
The dashed lines/arrows are the general Hatchery flow I think.
I've never been there as a Raptor or Fish in person so surely I don't know for sure. :)
I would need Brian's input to know for sure. :-*
-
BL -- Only incorrect label is: Creek out of Siewer's Spring is called Siewer's Spring Creek. Doesn't become Trout Run Creek until it joins with Trout Creek below the hatchery nests. (below as in downstream)
-
Huh'. On what map ?
I am pretty sure Trout Run flowing out of The Spring is flowing into Trout Creek.
Give me documentation of your said.
I will surely look.
-
I know I've seen it on a map, but most of my sources are from what you've posted in the past BL. I've got a friend from Decorah who did the geology work for Bruhning (sp?), the local quarry company, and he verified it for me too. He's answered all my questions about the hydrology of the area. He was the local consultant when they did the bore-holes to map the meteor crater. The dude knows a lot. Former 101st Screamin' Eagle with a tattoo of "Old Abe" on his forearm. Viet-vet. We drink at Toppling Goliath/Dixie's and talk about the 'Nam.
-
I can't find any reference to Siewer's Spring Creek in Iowa in the USGS GNIS.
https://edits.nationalmap.gov/apps/gaz-domestic/public/search/names
I'm gonna stick with Trout Run flowing out of Siewers Spring merging with Trout Creek and becoming Trout Run until it's confluence with the Upper Iowa River.
-
HM & HD perched in bluff-top trees about 11:45 this morning. Earlier, good views of geese flying in to land on the Pond, also a big takeoff [no pic] but a lovely closeup of just one.

-
Looks like time to start posting on the Goose Cam part of the Decorah nest forum. Do we have a sub-label for 2024?
A pair of geese were checking out the N2B nest and area of the creek under the nest tree this morning. For newbies, N2B is in one of the tall trees across the road from the Pond as we look at the length with the dock nearest us. But which tree?
It's possible that the geese might discover and use N1 this spring, too.

STL - The cam op zoomed in to N2B this morning from pond to N2B tree. I grabbed a screenshot, which is my third pic in the post.

Yes, thanks BL! It's about time I found out just where I've been watching all these years. :-[ ;)

From the Pavilion Cam looking north at night you can find the location of the N2B Cam very easily.

Lisa, great pics. I've been wondering if the Hatchery pair would keep tabs on N1 and it looks like they are, at least sorta-kinda.
I saw the same as you on the rewind just now. But that branch is not "The Y," which is on the other (left) side of N1. This Y-shaped branch is flatter and it overlooks the pasture and bridge side of N1. Hope that the mating in the treetops means there will be eggs and eaglets soon!!

STL - This is the Y branch that HM is on. We are seeing it from the new cam that was installed on the N side of the tree. We are use to seeing it with the old cam from the other side. There is no Y branch on the other side of N1. Are you thinking of the T1 branch that sort of looked like a Y? That branch hung over the horse pasture and was close to the bridge.
-
Seeing a Bald Eagle in N1 and on the Y always makes Pip's and My hearts just soar with big smiles. :-*
-
Lisa, I'm sure you are correct because you have been at Decorah! There's also a new branch map from OCT 2023 titled "DE N1 BRANCH ID" that has labels but no N S E W legend with the arrows one expects to see on a map. I am totally confused.
Three pics from summer 2023, showing the Y to left of N1 and the other perching branch to the right of N1. How do these views compare to what we have now?
Cam ops, How about a panning video with narration or labels to show us the new layout at N1?
-
STL - Your 1st pic is the Y branch that we are use to seeing, and I know I have seen it from time to time this season. But, there is another cam on the other side of the tree towards that gives is the look we saw yesterday.
Your 2nd pic is still looking from the same angle that we are use to seeing. The Y branch is on the left, and the other branch is what the DE branch ID calls the whittle branch.
Your 3rd pic, is DH2 sitting on the South side perch. That branch goes in the direction of the hatchery from the DE branch ID.

Lisa, love the night pics of the 'coon. Maybe it found some fish jerky left over from the summer offering.
Thanks for your good explanation of new camera locations that give us different views of N1. It will take more study for me to properly visualize as the season progresses. At least, now the new branch ID map makes more sense. This morning's pic of the Y was comforting to me to know that that camera is still in operation.
Good to see HM or HD having breakfast on the Spooky Branch at the pasture edge near N1.
And a goose spent some quality time on N2B early this morning.

About 3:00 this afternoon, HM and HD perched somewhere in the N2B vicinity, perhaps above the nest. Cam Ops did some helpful panning, especially on the flying away, which was definitely from the N2B area. Another watcher may have better location details.
-
STL, you are correct about the location of that being N2B.
After HM & HD left from there they, soared around the bluffs. This evening, a RT hawk pair copulated upstream, and HM was seen above N1.

There's a branch map from 2023 titled "DE N1 BRANCH ID" that has labels.
But no N S E W legend with the arrows one expects to see on a map.
I am totally confused.
STLbf
MY aim is to help and not hinder any compass direction of viewing confusion from here on N1.
You're standing directly in the center of N1 looking out from that vantage point about 60 feet above Trout Creek.
The N1 nest is in the crotch of a Cottonwood Tree that is near it's south bank.
There are currently 3 high end RRP PTZ cameras looking in on and out from various fixed locations in the N1 nest tree.
It gets tricky to know exactly which direction your looking OUT FROM on one of these 3 N1 Cameras.
HEADING.
Am I looking in on N1 from a camera mounted in the N1 nest tree somewhere _ Yes that's easy.
Very easily I'm led to believe on the live feed video image:
The heading from the camera can be depicted on the live camera feed unobtrusively in a corner ?
The cameras name and or #. ??
Z time even ?
No Secondary Intercardinal Directional points were harmed in anyway during this post. ;)

Early this morning, a young sub-adult was soaring around the hatchery and landed on the pines neat Trout Run Rd, moved to a tree across from the pond, and then in a tree on the raceway side of the hatchery, it looked like. HM & HD spotted the visitor, and flew above N1, perched for a while and flew out.

Geese on N2B this morning, likely a pair, perhaps the same pair as last year. I believe RRP said they tend to nest in the same place more than once. Last year, the first goose egg was laid on March 21.

Would it be something if there are TWO goose nests this year, at N2B and N1. What are the odds?

The last posting of HM and HD together was Lisa's on 2/15. It's possible that they have an egg or two to brood now. I miss being able to watch, although I occasionally check the Norths. Thank you to anyone and everyone who posts pics here and on Explore.

lilbirdz - I did see them copulate on Feb. 16th in the morning on the tree top by the bluff perch. I have noticed that they were not seen together after that, except for yesterday in the same spot for a brief moment. I am too wondering if they are on eggs, and yesterday for the brief moment was for swapping egg-sitting duties.

Geese in the Pond, visiting N2B, and on the Bluff top this morning. Eagle in usual places also, probably HD or HM but can't tell which.

It's kind of curious to me as to why the abundant Canada Geese that are seriously nest shopping in the area have not checked out the N2B nest and it's Cottonwood Tree .. yet ?
HM and HD still frequent it to often ?
Not a good soft (GLZ) Gosling Landing Zone below ?
No 'moving' water in Trout Creek below due to drought ?
There's just something 'funky' about N2B now ?
Too much mechanical apparatus hanging around N2B that it just doesn't feel or look like a natural Cottonwood Tree anymore?
The intrepid Racoon that visited here on the night of the 9th ?
We're watching .. :)
-
Pip and I were cracking up watching today's Canada Goose honking antics all around The Hatchery Realm. ;D THR

Just observations not drawing any harsh conclusions.

N2B with the pair of geese the busiest site at Decorah today. This pair is very vocal today.
One eagle perching in the tree tops at the Pond bluffs -- HM or HD -- and guessing that the other is sitting on egg or eggs in their new nest, which we cannot see.

Goose cam is now Live at Decorah's N2B. Someone will create a location here on the Forum eventually.
Meanwhile, one of the eagles visited the Y and N1 this morning about 10:00. I'm guessing HD.

A goose landed in N1 this morning, and stayed for quite a while, till one of the eagles, sounded like HM flew above N1.

Well, at least we know the geese know that there's a second nest that might be available. Watch and learn!
Here's a pic from the Goose Cam at N2B this morning about 8:00. A pair has been back and forth to sit for a while then fly away several times. Not much honking going on so far today.
How about shortening the moniker to DGC, for Decorah Goose Cam? Eventually someone will create a Forum location for posting just about the geese. Maybe waiting to see if there will be two nests to watch. :D

Lisa, seems like HM must be sitting on eggs most of the time. I was thinking the perching eagle was HD, too.
And a sweep of the rewind reveals that a goose visited N1 this morning, and might be a pair of geese in the creek below N1 area.
OMG -- think of the babies that could be jumping from high nests this spring!

I assume a female goose was digging out a nest bowl this AM in N1.
And there is definitely some CG competition going on in N1.
Looks like we'll have 2 goose cams this year.
-
BL, you got great pics of the geese games at N1 this morning!
I'm wondering if it is the same pair that has been visiting N2B, or different pair and others? My timing estimates are not really reliable, even though I thought it was about the same time for geese on N2B and N1, which would mean different pairs. The folks at Explore might know for sure, or mods at the chat rooms.
One of the eagles was perching in trees at the bluffs near where they have the new nest, also early morning.

Puff - HD injured his talon sometime before they laid eggs last season. It was a bloody looking mess for a while, and then it finally fell off.
-
Hmmmm, I could be totally wrong, but I thought HD grew a new talon. Healing took months. Let's comb through our archived pics.

P
Puff - RRP wrote about it on their Facebook page back in Feb 2023. Here is the original post.
What happened to HD's foot? On February 3, several sharp-eyed volunteers and fans noticed that one of his toes appeared to be injured. We talked with Dr. Laura Johnson and Master Bander Dave Kester about the injury.
It isn't easy to diagnose a condition based on photos, but Laura told us that it looks like an injury (possibly a constriction or bite) caused by a loss of blood supply to HD's toe and nailbed. We first noticed the injury after he came into the nest with a squirrel. As cute as they look to us, squirrels are notorious for being fast, hard biters - potentially risky prey even for an experienced raptor like HD. We haven't seen any string or twine on HD's toes or in the nest.
We're not sure what will happen next. HD's talon might fall off. Whether it regrows has everything to do with how much damage there is to the germinal cells from which the talon emerges. But there is no evidence of swelling in the rest of the toe proximal to the injury and the rest of the foot looks good. Laura thought we could be cautiously optimistimc that the incident won't have a significant impact on him; Dave told us that his first hawk had similar damage to her hallux claw. Smackers did not lose her talon and eventually the scab broke off to reveal beautiful new skin beneath. We're crossing our talons for the best possible outcome.
We're also watching HD very closely. At this point, he appears to be healthy and is still eating, bringing materials into the nest, and helping to get everything ready for eggs. While we haven't seen a successful copulation yet - like DM2, HD seems a little shy - his eagle-tect instincts are on point! Both eagles seem to be shifting their focus from sticks to soft materials as they move into the final stages of nest bowl prep and egg cup construction.
We'll keep everyone posted. Thanks to our camera operators and the eagle council for keeping us on top of everything.
-
Lisa, good to post the post about HD's toe-talon injury last year. Here are several pics from when I noticed it in February and the progression into March as it looked worse and worse and HD was limping and favoring the foot.
Watchers are very relieved that HD recovered and seems able to do everything he needs to without that central talon.
-
We stopped at the hatchery on our way by. All we saw were geese and more geese. A pair were on N1. A couple were settled up by one of the tanks and a slew of them over by the pond.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO POST THIS! This is the nest of the "other eagles" outside Decorah I check on every year. I THINK I posted them with Decorah and marked that it was the "other eagles" other years. Anyway I assume this is mom and it looks like she's on an egg or eggs! I took this one and my camera battery died. :-\ I hope they have good luck this year, they've built that newer nest up more since last year.

Great pics, Nora!
Thanks for the video, T40!

Thanks Nora for the pics and the news.
That "other" nest is out on Old Stage Rd., then off on Ranch Road. And its another Trout Creek. :)
I'm sounding an alarm.
People should not be happy about the Canadian Geese usurping the eagle nests at the Hatchery.
The geese are a non-native, invasive species and should be discouraged from turning the hatchery from an Eagle Haven (dare I say--"Heaven") into a Goose Gallery where the last thing you do before you get back in the car to leave is clean your shoes off. Pellet guns are my serious alternative. Big dogs might help although geese are daunting, nest destruction is a necessity, and natural enemies....probably a threat to eagles too. Hope RRP does somethin serious and soon or ATF will have no reason to meet at the Hatchery.

Thank you T40, Nora, Lisa, eburgh and anyone else I forgot.
I agree about the geese being invasive. And the awful mess they leave on the ground.

They are invasive and do make a mess, but they are part of nature and they were open nests.

Eburg, I really dislike your suggestion of pellet guns for control of geese. If you're hunting, you have an ethical duty to make sure that an animal dies instantly and as far as possible painlessly. That means you don't shoot anything the size of a goose with a pellet gun. You're almost certainly consigning it to a lingering and painful death from infection.
As far as hazing, there are other humane methods available to eliminate geese from an area.
-
OK....replace pellet gun with "sling shot".
And LindaM....please denote other means of hazing geese from an area. We need to do all that we can to contain the situation we're facing.
I've never shot a pellet gun, but I didn't think a BB-gun would be effective at the ranges of ground to nest firing.

Guess Who!!!!
I'm really sorry for the worries everyone. So sorry. Dropped my cup of tea and thought it was all on the floor and table. Nope, some got into the keyboard, laptop, and tech told me it burned/shorted out the insides. He brought in a keyboard for me to use, ordered me a new machine that will probably come Friday - then he'll reload all my "stuff" to new machine.
Sorry for the scare Clynn (who I was posting to at the time of the big poof), tig, Lisa, Karen, tsk :-*, Lani, baz. It was recommended that I start using a sippy cup by tsk. Cute!
Saw your post Clynn on Route 66. I actually live about 60 miles away from the original start of the road. Have some literature that I've followed. Live 1/2 mile from I55. South was the original, original. Somewhere along the process they did leave some of the first base and you can still see it. They also put up a sign in downtown Chicago claiming a new official starting point, putting it in the Loop on State Street but then switching it again over to Michigan Avenue/Lake Shore Drive. The for real end of the Route is celebrated not in LA but in Santa Monica. I visited the pier there and saw their designated spot in 2023. There are plans in the work for celebrating the 100 anniversary all along the path across the country. It's 2026 - I'll be there!

I would hazard a guess here.
I highly doubt there will be any BB Gun wildlife "shoeing" going on around here.
-
You're probably right BL, but I really dislike those Canadians. ::)

LindaM....please denote other means of hazing geese from an area. We need to do all that we can to contain the situation we're facing.
A few methods used for hazing geese include dogs, lasers, lights, noise, canine decoys, or oiling the eggs which is what they use in the parks here. Of course, oiling eggs in a nest up in the trees in Decorah is not possible, I just included it here. Our parks also use decoys, which need to be moved from time to time.

From yesterday afternoon - HM was spotted on bluff perch, and a sub-adult flew in to perch with her.

Pretty quiet Sunday at Decorah. The geese were on N1 for a while, and either HD or HM was perching in the high bluff tree at the same time. Geese feeding and resting at the pond.

Nobody talking??? There's an egg on N1, about 10 minutes before the hour.

I don't see it there, the nest looks empty. I assume it's the goose, so maybe she covered it, as geese do to protect it when they're away from the nest. But why isn't she there sleeping/incubating now.... it's night time!

N1Mother Goose laid her 2nd egg yesterday afternoon a lil after 5pm.

From what I have read, and remember from last season at N2B, they do not start full incubation till they are done laying eggs. So, she may have a few more to lay.
-
Look what I missed when not checking in for a couple of days! Not surprised to see goose eggs at N1. Last year Mother Goose laid 6 eggs at N2B, so we'll need to watch that site also. And yes, the eggs get covered when the parents are not there, either with leaves and dirt or downy feathers pulled from her underparts and chest.
Go Geese! :D
-
Another pair of geese at N2B but no eggs as of this morning.

Lisa, great pic of third egg. Looks like RRP might have to designate N1 as the Goose Cam for this year!
So far nothing at N2B, which makes me wonder if this is the pair that had goslings there the past two years. About 8:00, two geese visited the N2B nest, then flew away. Still confusing as to which pair is which, and even if there are two pairs.
-
STL I'm pretty sure there are 2 separate "pairs" of CG's at N1 and N2B.
The screen grabs below where snagged at the exact same time on rewind at both nest sites this morning.
-
As a side note - T40 - it looks like you're going to get carpeted pretty good with a typical March snow storm in your neck of the CO woods.
Hoping you're stocked up and hunkered in .. enjoy and stay safe. :)

I have seen 2 separate pairs on each nest at the same time, a few times while watching.

BL, thanks for the confirmation that there are 2 pairs of CGs at Decorah now. Like many, I wish we had eagles to watch instead of geese, but Ma Nature decided differently.
The pair at N1 has much more nest material to work with, mostly short fat sticks. They can cover the eggs when they leave the nest and not have to pull out their own feathers. Actually, I think it is the female that does all the incubating work, while the male only guards and protects.

LisaG's better nest watcher confirmation then mine ! 8) :-*
I'm semi-cool-tepid with the CG's using the area's abandoned BE nest's.
Mother Nature always rights the story we two footers watch and experience. ;D
-
I still got a gut feeling that Trout Creek with it's White Sucker fish supply being bone drought dry has something to do with the BE's re-location.
I really don't think that the amount of fish that these eagles eat come from "the hatchery system" as most long time observers think.
Flowing River.

HM and HD now reside in a nest above the Trout Run (flowing water) up on the Bluffs. :)
It just feels so N0 coming back around right to me.
-
The pair of geese at N1 has 3 eggs and both parents are defending the nest and honking loudly when HM or HD perches in the branches above.

Thanks for the heads-up about the 4th egg this morning. I think about 10:30 AM, see pic.
LisaG is calling the parents here MG and FG, and that's fine with me, too, if it matters.
But, does that mean MG = Male Goose or Mother Goose? :o
And is FG = Female Goose or Father Goose? ::)

Ok, I'm confused.... I thought the cam labeled "Decorah Eagles" was N2B, & The goose cam was N1. Guess not.... :o
-
CheeseQueen, it's easy to be confused about which camera is which! There are maps with labels on the Decorah chat page.
The geese are nesting now at N1, which is labeled the Decorah Eagle Cam, and is near the horse barn and pasture, with the Y branch.
Decorah Goose Cam is at N2B, where no geese are laying eggs yet, but sometimes gets visitors. N2B is closer to the Retention Pond, and this was the location of the 6 goslings last year.
It's very tender that the male goose is staying on the nest most of the time with the female. Last year, the male was not as close by. So interesting to watch and learn.

Thanks for clearing that up! Maybe the cam names & pics should be switched? Newcomers will be just as confused!

You have a point about swapping names, but I think it's too soon. There's a pair of geese interested in N2B. They have excavated a large bowl and this morning about 8:00 one was sitting on the bowl and the other on the Skywalk.
-
There's a 5th goose egg at N1 this morning, on view at about 10:30. The geese are somewhat disturbed that HM is watching from the branches above the nest.

I am hoping she brings the new kiddos over this way. :D

HD arrives above the cams with morning with sounding vocals, stays for a bit, and flew out (still had markings on tail). HM arrives a short while later, stays for a bit, moves to another branch above, and flew out. N1MG gets up, still 5 eggs.

Several views of the 5 goose eggs, about once an hour this morning from 8:00 to 11:00. MG might lay one more. The gander (FG) has been with her on the nest most of the time. Could be because of the presence of eagles nearby. The male geese do not incubate eggs, but they are great guardians.
-
STL - This FG(gander) has been sitting near the eggs, while she has them covered, and have seen him on top while covered, too. This is a pic from this morning, after MG flew down to creek for break of FG on nest.

I am not as good with the spreadsheet info like BL, but I used a time and date calculator off the web to get these figures. It gave me a round about hour. Since geese lay eggs every 1.5 days, I wanted to see how close. This is what I came up with.
Egg #1: 3/9/24 @6:22 PM CT
Egg #2: 3/11/24 @5:05PM CT
Egg #3: 3/13/24 @10:35AM CT
Egg #4: 3/15/24 @7:17AM CT
Egg #5: 3/16/24 @8:00PM CT

2nd to 3rd was 41 hrs
3rd to 4th was 44 hrs
4th to 5th was 36 hrs

MG on N2B laid her egg this morning. She seems like she could be a 1st time mom, as when she pushed the egg out, she spun around, and the egg landed on the side of the nest. She finally realized the egg was not under her, she looked back to see the egg. She went to get it and it was almost at the top, and the egg got loose and rolled off the nest. :(

I'm pretty sure N2B MG will lay more eggs.

2 former Bald Eagle nests now with Canadian Geese laying eggs in them is nature running it's course .. :)
Some overdue snow moisture ?

Oh my, I was wondering about the short sticks appearing in the nest bowl at N2B since yesterday. I totally missed the egg-laying at N2B yesterday! Thanks for the pics and the info from LisaG and BL, also about the 6 eggs at N1.
Hope this female goose returns to N2B to try again soon. Sad to see an egg lost, even a goose egg.
-
At N1, all seemed peaceful until about 10:15, when MG started calling honk similar to what the eagles do when they want the other to come. When FG landed, MG stood up and they both honked as at intruder, which was an eagle heard off-camera. Several of the eggs were in view briefly. Everybirdy settled down after a few minutes.

I was a regular on the Explore site and used the name sassybelle to post comments and upvote Lisa G, rosieanne, Oliver Case and others. After about 3 or 4 weeks of not being there, I now find that I have to create a Disqus account in order to post or upvote. Does anyone know how this came to be? If I can figure out how to create a new Disqus account, will it work on other Explore cams? I miss HD and HM and really should get interested in the Norths.

lilbirdz - I have been using my same Explore account for years. I have never had to create a Disqus account in order to post or upvote. I did get a new PC recently, and it wanted me to do that, and I cannot remember how I avoided that.
Decorah North babies should be here soon, keep an eye out. The 1st egg is 34 days old today, I think?

Around 1:30ish this afternoon, a sub-adult was perched upstream. It left the tree and the view zoomed out. The sub looked like it was headingfor N1, but turned. Not sure if MG thought the sub was heading to the nest, but you could hear her fly out, and then the nest was shown with no geese, just eggs uncovered. HM arrives above N1 shortly after geese return.

Geese are persistent, aren't they? Good news about the second egg at N2B, I guess , , , ;) I will call the female N2BMG, same as LisaG is using.
Immediately after laying the egg, she jumped up and the egg nearly went over the edge of the nest bowl, like the first one actually did. :o
She is likely to be a first-time mom, like it's all a big surprise to her.
About 9:00 AM, she covered the egg with sticks, then left and is still away from the nest at 3:55 this afternoon.
Also, the gander N2BFG, is not visible. Different behavior from the geese at N1, where the gander is very attentive and present.
-
Meanwhile at N1, the gander (N1FG) spent the night with the goose (N1MG), but has been off the nest during the day. She rolled the eggs several times, but did not leave them as of posting time.
-
Eagles seen in trees off and on at top of the Bluffs, also some geese were on the rocks at the top for a while, but no pic.
RWBB male displaying in branches, I think near N1, about 8:00. Watch this if you can, on the rewind, it's really lovely.
Beautiful male wood duck visited the Pond this morning about 9:00. Did not see a female.
-
While the N1 cam was looking down on N1FG eating duck weed on the bank of Trout Creek you can see a cool hanging birds nest. Orange circle.
I think it's a Baltimore Orioles nest ?
BTW the area will be getting some snow tonight.
-
BL, thanks for pointing out the hanging bird's nest. Yes, Baltimore oriole. Very Cool. Hope the cam ops will keep a watch on that nest to see if there are chicks this summer.
Ick on the snow forecast.
-
Snow overnight, but not really deep.
At N2B, the nest was unattended overnight. About 7:30, N2BMG came to the nest and sat for about half an hour, then left and didn't return all morning.
At N1, both geese were on the nest overnight and all morning except for a couple brief times away. The eggs seem secure. Around 10:00 they were honking at lot. N1MG quickly covered the eggs and both parents left the nest for the pasture area for a few minutes before returning, still honking at some unknown, unseen disturbance. They are settled down at time of posting. Eagle sightings but no pics.
-
At N2B the likely female goose spent about an hour on the nest, sitting and standing, around 3:00 PM
And at N1, I think I mis-named the geese in the pics posted earlier. Sorry, I lost my magic code ring! As of 5:00 PM, the gander (FG for Father Goose) is feeding in the creek area under the nest, and the goose (MG for Mother Goose) is incubating the eggs.

Lisa, good that you caught the second egg at N2B! Middle of the night, N2BFG covered the eggs before leaving the nest. She has been gone since then as far as I can tell, and it's almost 2:00 in the afternoon.
-
At N1, the gander left about 8:00 to float in the creek and take a nap, while the goose remained on the eggs. HM perched in branches above N1, and the geese objected as usual and the gander returned to the nest to help with honking.
-
At N2B, the goose was away during the night. She returned just before the color cam turned back on, and uncovered her 2 eggs, and has been sitting on them since. The snowy windy conditions got worse about noon.
-
At N1, the geese are on duty, despite the snow and wind.
A sub-adult eagle was eating a frozen something (duck?) near the pond corner, with crows on the rewind. The sub-a flew to branches near N1 and perched for a while, causing a ruckus by the geese.
HM or HD has been perching in a favorite tree at the base of the bluffs.
-
Great pics, STL
Loved the sub-adult with the osprey look this morning!
-
Lisa, the masked sub-a is around again this morning. Before perching on the snag, maybe one of the Maples, the Sub-A was at the fishing corner or a tree at base of the bluffs. This whole area is kind of up for grabs by new eagles since HM & HD are nesting farther away.
-
STL, I took these early morning of the sub-adult perched below the bluff before heading to M2. HM arrived a short time later above N1, vocalizing.

Great pics, Lisa. Variety is the spice of life here at the Decorah Hatchery area, that's for sure.
The goose at N2B has laid a third egg, visible in the pics from about 10:00 this morning. Again, the nest was left unattended during the night. It's gonna be really interesting to see if any of these eggs hatch. Also just before MG rose up from the eggs, an intruder goose landed in front of her. She snapped at it and it flew away. The gander immediately landed just behind her and they both honked warnings.
-
Eagles doing their thing this morning, one perched near N1 I believe it's HD or HM. Then flew to the fishing corner, later to perch toward the top of the bluffs.
The N1 geese are also doing their thing, and the six eggs seem OK.
At N2B, rewind shows the goose sitting on the eggs most of the night and into the morning. No pic.

N1FG below N1 in creek. HM was perched above N1 this morning a young sub-adult flew in and perched under her. The sub-adult stayed for only a few seconds, as the honks from the geese below scared it off.

At midnight we had 51 degrees and it didn't start dropping until later, so if she's not into full incubation they might be ok.
-
N2BMG stayed on the eggs overnight, so it appears that she is in "full incubation" mode. She is sitting on 4 eggs, but laid 5 -- remembering the first egg that rolled off the nest. Thanks to Lisa and BL for the accurate and up to date info!

I believe your statement above is correct STLbf.
But I'm now a little confused on the goose egg count @ N2B because of this post by RRP .. I think it's a typo .. ;)
March 25, 2024: Egg #5 – https://youtu.be/aDRIV0wV27M?si=3epm0f3qwordOTM4. MG2 is beautifully bejeweled with rain as she lays her sixth egg at N2B (the first one missed her scrape and fell out of the tree). She might lay another – we’ll see tomorrow or Thursday! Either way, she’s in full incubation now. Male geese protect the nest but do not share in incubation duties, which means she’ll get very few chances to eat until her eggs hatch and the goslings jump. She will lose roughly 25-30% of her body weight during incubation.
Here's a pic from early this AM 03/27/24 of MG @ N2B rolling her eggs .. I'm pretty sure I count 4 eggs. ;D
-
Now as far as MG @ N1 goes are we sure she is still sitting on 6 eggs ?

I thought I was loosing track of the goose egg count at the 2 nests. :-[ ::)
So as of 03/27/2024 the egg count stands at:
N2BMG is incubating 4 eggs. Decorah Goose Cam (https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-goose-cam/).
N1MG is incubating 6 eggs. Decorah Eagle Cam (https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-eagles/).

At N2B, the MG covered her 4 eggs before leaving for a few minutes about 8:30 this morning. She was gone only a few minutes and returned to sit patiently like a good mother goose. ;)
At N1, an eagle perched for a short time above N1, geese not too perturbed. Which eagle? Shortly after it flew away, N1MG covered her 6 eggs while N1FG kept watch, then they left the nest. N1MG returned quickly to incubate the eggs. Two anterless deer were feeding at the creek below N1 about the same time.

Lisa, what a spectacular pic.
At N2B, a very quiet day. On rewind, I didn't see N2BMG roll the eggs or leave the nest. She did pull quite a few downy feathers to add to the nest.
At about 7:00 this morning, N1MG rolled her 6 eggs, then covered them and she and N1FG went for a quick breakfast just below the nest. About 8:00, a male RWBB was displaying his red and yellow wing epaulets. A wild turkey seen in the creek and bank below N1 about 4:00 this afternoon.

Watch the action at N2B today around noon!! N2BMG honking and disturbed, then a second goose came to N2B, and N2BMG reacted by snapping and pushing at it. Moments later, the gander arrived (N2BFG) and both attacked the intruder, which kept trying to get under N2BMG and onto the eggs. Turns out, she was desperate for a place to lay an egg, which she did while under attack!! Much pushing and shoving and biting, finally the intruder left. In the melee, the new egg stayed and one of the "old" eggs got pushed to the edge of the nest. N2BMG tried to move it back to the center but it rolled off the nest. Whew! Who knew geese did this kind of behavior? Hope a better explanation and narration comes from Explore and RRP. It's like the Monday Afternoon Fights on cable TV.
-
STL - That was some scuffle. I have heard that some geese do egg dumps in nests with other geese who are incubating. Their was a goose that tried to land on N1 a lil bit before this at N2B. I have to wonder if it is the same goose.
-
hmmm .. so how do we egg count this at N2B .. ?
It's like the old shell game over here. ;)
N2BMG laid a total of 5 eggs - 2 have fallen from the nest - 1 interloper MG laid 1 egg = 4 eggs ? ???
-
BL, your egg count seems correct. We'll never be able to tell which egg belongs to the intruder who laid it.
Lisa, I missed the goose trying to land at N1, but you could be right about the same goose attempting.
Anyhow, things at N1 and N2B are quiet and snowy this morning. Both adult geese at N1 overnight and some morning. The MG is on eggs at N2B, male not visible.
Two adult-looking eagles were perched near the two nests at the same time -- see pics. Could be HM and HD, or near-adult sub. Makes me wonder about eagle eggs in that new nest we cannot see.

Here is my thoughts on the two BE's this morning. I think HM was the one that was on M2, as she flew over to the one perched across from the pond and ejected it from the tree.
-
Good call, Lisa, on the eagles this morning. I didn't stay with the rewind long enough to see the ejection by HM. And earlier, the eagle from the N1 area did a couple of beautiful fly-arounds, while HM watched. All nicely caught by the cam ops.
-
At N2B today about 8:30, a second goose flapped in and N2BMG exchanged a little noise but not agitation, so it was probably N2BFG. He stayed for a short while, then she rolled the 4 eggs. The same happened about 9:15. At about 1:00, N2BMG was startled by a squirrel running up the Skywalk branch past the nest. She jumped up, flapped her wings, made a little noise, then settled back down.
[Note on April 5: Goose code names were incorrect on these pics. Today they have been corrected.]
-
At N1 area about 7:30AM, an adult BE perched in the top of a bluff base tree, then flew off, to be seen in branches above N1 (probably same eagle). The N1 geese fussed a little. Other birds on the move -- several turkey vultures perched up high at the far end of the creek upstream from N1 about 8:00 AM. And a sub-adult BE was in that area about 2:00; cam ops followed a long fly-in, with the BE ending up in a tree near N1 until about 2:30.
-
More pics from today at the N1 area, goose rolling 6 eggs, and the sub-adult BE. Also, vultures soaring at 2:45PM, watch on the rewind!
-
A lil visit from HM this morning, before heading over below to bluffs to creek watch. She stayed there for a while, then headed behind N2B area and perched atop a tree.

Very interesting morning in DE, HD was spotting in the pines by hatchery raceways before flying off. Vocals from HM were heard above the cams, before flying out. Vocals from HD was heard above the cams, he perched for a while before heading out to a lower bluff tree where he joined up with HM to perch. Does this mean they had a failed nesting season?

Lisa, Great pics of HM and HD, but it's not encouraging to see them perching together! Hope someone makes a trek to the new nest area to investigate soon.
At the N2B goose nest, it's a quiet morning. In the blog about the kerfluffle with an intruder laying an egg in this nest the other day, Amy used a different code for the goose names: PG and MG. Maybe that means "Pop" and "Mom" goose??? Maybe no one cares what we call them, but in the interest of less confusion when we post pictures and make comments, does someone have an official recommendation?
-
Morning pics from Decorah - HD was on the lower bluff tree, HM arrives a short time later. Both flew out, and HM returns a bit later and HD arrives. HD leaves again, returns to the right back side of tree. Looks like he might have went and got something to eat.

Lisa, HM and HD have been in the generally same location since early this morning, and I'm posting just before noon. It's chilly, windy, and rainy in this part of Iowa. This does not bode well for BE eggs or eaglets for this pair.
Nothing special going on at either of the goose nests so far today.

Here's an interesting thought Lisa. Off and on lately either HM or HD have been checking in for the status of the nest. And, it looks like we'll soon have an empty nest and a half dozen geesies. What if, wonder if HM and HD are keeping some possible space for a renest in mind????
P
-
Lisa, it certainly looks like HM and HD are moving sticks and starting a new nesting site! They might be using an old crow nest or squirrel nest as the base. And if it's kind of between N1 and N2B, that will be in camera range. Also, the goose eggs will hatch in a couple weeks and those babies leave their nests in a day or two. Optimism abounds!
-
h ha smart minds on the same journey = danger STL My other thought though is how late in the beginning season is it within time frame to lay and hatch eaglets? Anyone have the facts/numbers?

I would think if they were thinking of re-clutching that would be putting eggs due sometime in May, or June. YIKES, all I can think of is it will be hot and black flies.
-
Eagles have re-clutched and hatched late in the season, with not good results. Hatchlings can't deal with high temperatures and the black flies, and died in a few days as I recall. Will check the nest records to see when and where. It was at the Decorah North nest with Mr and Mrs N. See in pic attached below.
-
Early morning pics from DE - from the sound of vocals HD might have spent the night near the new lil starter nest and HM flew in a lil later when seen. A few sticks were brought in, they flew over to below the bluffs and did some fishing and headed back towards N1 area. Both were spotted on the Goose Cam, so they must have been near the N2B area.

Very interesting, huh! Here's a pic of HM & HD in trees near N2B about 10:00 this morning. So it seems that they are testing a location with a starting nest kind of between N2B and N1.
Late afternoon, the cam ops at Decorah found a small flock of turkey vultures way out and way high in trees, perching and mating. Lots of activity in April.
-
At N2B, the female goose is sitting tight [no pic]. The female at N1 has been doing the same, and she checked her eggs about 4:40 PM; all looks OK.
HM and HD have spent time today in the pasture tree, seen in pics from two different cameras, I think.

Really great pics, Lisa! I love watching the eagles obtaining their nesting materials.
See panorama pic for location of N2B (orange arrow) and the new site (orange circle) for HM & HD building a nest, which looks like it overhangs the road from the horse pasture and bridge corner. This view isn't quite wide enough to show the horse barn and N1, but they are off to the left.
Questions: Is the new tree alive, just without leaves yet? What kind of tree is it?

That new tree was in full bloom when I was in Decorah last summer, so I am guessing it is still alive. I am not positive, but think its a Cottonwood, too.

Yea, sure looks like it. :D

I know we're on gosling hatch watch here at the Trout Creek Decorah Tri Nest area.
N1, N2B and the new nest N6.
• I too believe that HM & HD's new nest - N6 - is in a Cottonwood Tree and the tree is alive.
• The N6 nest tree (of 3 trees) is the one closest to Trout Creek to the north of it and JUST to the NW corner of the Siewers Spring Rd bridge.
I have no idea what happened to the Hatchery Eagles 'Bluff Nest' that they built on top of the bluffs this past Fall, but obviously something went amiss.
The current as of 04/13/24 Decorah Eagles evolving nest locations and goings on with some orientation.

Note:
The Exact N6 nest location in my 2nd image is approximate.
I ain't never been there.
I may have gotten turned around a wee bit on the mirror view from the N1 camera.
I'm confident on the correct N6 tree however.

BL, thanks again for your great help in locating the new eagle nest N6. I'll study it this afternoon.
Meanwhile, all 6 of the eggs at N1 have hatched safely, see pics. Enjoy the views of this goose family. The gander has been present the whole time, which seems extra-special. As RRP reported in the latest blog/news, the jumping from the nest could be today or tomorrow. Someone will know how high up the N1 nest is from the ground.

Great pics, STL!
In chat one day, I think someone asked that question, and one of the mods said, N1 is about 80ft from the ground. If I am wrong, someone correct me, please!

FG was up on the Y branch just a few minutes ago, and I thought he was going to go, then it got windy. He came back and wind has picked up again.

Update on the N2B geese -- not ready for hatching just yet, and all seems OK. After covering her 4 eggs, N2BMG left for feeding. She returned in about 10 -15 minutes, and N2BFG came with her. He stayed until she was all settled back on the eggs. Good Night Geese. Good Night Everybirdie.

Jump Day! All 6 goslings jumped from the nest at N1 right around 8:00 this morning. The first 5 went quickly from the side where the mother goose went off [see pics and also video]. The last one dithered for a few minutes and finally went off the opposite side. Only 5 goslings have been seen with the parents on the ground and in the creek. I suspect that the missing one is the last that jumped. Chat mods report that it has not been found as of about 10:30 AM.
Lots of pics, and times are approximate by a few minutes, mostly to keep them in order. :D
Before the Jump, another goose landed on the Y. Parents honked until it went away. After the Jump, a goose came to the nest. I would like to think it is a parent looking for the lost gosling, but it is probably the visiting goose, perhaps looking for a place to lay eggs. We will see what happens.
-
Pics of MG leaving and the jumping, which occurred really quickly after MG left the nest. The first 5 went almost in a row, all from the same side of the nest. The last ran around back and forth and finally went off the opposite side.
-
On the ground, 5 of the goslings gathered around the parents quickly. The parents searched for the 6th, and people on the ground also, but it is still missing as of posting time at 10:45AM. Searching indicates that geese know how many goslings should be there!
Another goose came to the nest, perhaps more eggs again??
-
STL, that goose laid an egg around 10:28am ;D

There is a lot of loud goose honking on the live nest cam right now. I'm wondering if that is due to any RRP helpers in the area searching for #6, or if it's just the normal goose honking for communicating to and for the newly-jumped goaslings and such. I wish we knew if anyone is still out there actively searching for #6, or if their search is done and they've left the nest/jump area.
-
No one was around them when I saw them, but there were quite a few geese around and the usual honking all over the hatchery. :)
-
Thanks, Nora! :) :-*
-
Thanks, Nora! :) :-*
They were honking in Trout Run, the retention pond, flying over.................. ;)
-
Holy Cow! Go run errands for a couple hours and look what happens! Another whole new goose and an egg at N1, almost before the place cooled off from the family of 6 goslings. Well, how many will this goose lay, and is there a gander in the area? Watch and learn.
The cam ops have a great chance to find views of the new eagle nest in the pasture tree. N6 is the label, and it's going to be interesting to see what happens there, too. Will HM and HD lay eggs this late in the season? As the tree leafs out, the nest will be harder to see in detail, but it's great to have eagles nearby again. Hope the goose commotion doesn't scare them away.
Still lots of geese honking at 3:00 this afternoon.
-
:-[. Sad to hear about little 6️⃣
-
The goose laid several eggs at once! Has anyone found little six?
Sadly, RRP announced one of the goslings didn't survive the fall. I assume it was the last one to jump. 😥

Hmm .. A mg laid an egg (1?) in N1 about 2 1/2 hrs after N1MG, N1FG and the goslings left the N1 nest ? ! :o
Talk about not even waiting for the down to cool down. :D
They call it hot racking in the military. ;D
So what do we call this one .. N1MG02 ?
Ground predator free goose nesting locations around the hatchery area must be at a premium.
That's why I'm thinking the wise older geese round here probably choose abandoned bald eagle nests up high nowadays.
6 eggs on a ground nest every year _ almost every year a land critter takes 2 or 3 eggs _ off camera.
6 eggs on a high nest every year _ six jump _ five goslings swim downstream with mom eating duckweed with her_ on Camera.
Simple species survival math.
Around 5 pm nest time the N1 camera was looking down on the old RxR bridge foundation (https://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/islandora/object/ui%3Asheetmaps_155) and showed another MG (RRMG) lay an egg right on top of it.
The old RxR bridge foundation is below the N1 nest slightly to the west & upstream.
-
"Will HM and HD lay eggs this late in the season?" When I lived north of the Twin Cities in MN a close friend had an eagle nest for years right by their house in the yard. It was a wet spring and the nest fell and both little eaglets were killed. They spent the summer and fall building a new nest in a big old cottonwood across the yard and the next spring raised little ones.
-
I watched as the gosling jumped from the nest and saw the last one trying to follow the others but then coming back into the nest. The others went down what appeared to be a hole in the side of the nest. The last one tried several times, then went down the opposite side. I wonder if one of the babies got caught in the hole and the 6th found the hole blocked. Just conjecture of course. But maybe the lost gosling is #5 to try to make the leap instead of #6. Or has the body of #6 been found?
-
I believe the body was found!

Per RRP's Facebook posting yesterday....
Raptor Resource Project
What are we looking forward to this week? It's been a busy morning and it's going to be a busy week!
The goslings at N1 jumped this morning between 8:02 and 8:04 AM CDT. Five of the six made it, but one did not. MG and PG have herded their five surviving offspring downstream to deeper, more sheltered water. Perhaps we'll see them from the N2B cam, where goslings should start hatch on or around April 20. It took just a few hours for another goose to come in and lay an egg at N1, so don't be surprised if you see more geese, eggs, and goslings in this nest. The goslings at N2B should hatch on or around April 20.
**I am guessing that if they know that one did not make it, that they found it below.
-
At N2B, four eggs with hatch expected April 20. This morning around 10:00, the female (N2BMG) lifted up and gave the cam ops (DGC pics) a great view of the eggs. The gander (N2BFG) came in for a few minutes, too. At this nest, the male hasn't spent much time.
HM & HD perching in the lower bluff tree, and not seen at the Pasture Tree where they are building N6. Maybe later.
At N1, the second female laid one egg yesterday shortly after the other family made the Jump. This morning, she has been sitting on the Y more than on the nest. Several other geese are in the area, flying and feeding on the ground. Honking, too. See Decorah pics.
-
This morning when HM & HD were perched on the lower bluff tree, one left and the other followed. They both headed to the pond and flew down to fish at the same time. HM had flown back towards the bluffs, while HD landed on the S side of the pond.

Here's my observations from yesterday. I'm wondering if anyone else was following along and agrees with my summaries of what was happening. I got caught up in events about 6:30.
It started with the gander looking down to the ground from various points on the nest. He covered all 360 degrees. Mom just watched over the 6 goslings. But then he stopped at one spot for quite a while; mom came over by him to see what he decided. I swear that was very clear a joint decision. You could hear him making the come hither squawks. Then MG jumped. And very different from previous "leaps" this time didn't take long at all. I remember it being a 1/2 hour ordeal. This time someone quoted 2 minutes? But then we still had #6. That one ran from one part of the edge to the other. Trying to make sure they were using the best launch??? It tried and almost decided on a couple places before jumping; he/she didn't jump to any rash decision.
I also think they found the unsuccessful little one. And I did notice too that the landing area picked out by FG was right next to a walkin spot along the side of Trout Creek. Didn't have to hike to find a good low jump in spot. Also noted during the week that FG and MG weren't into padding up the landing spot with grass and other soft stuff. It wasn't at all like the prep that we've seen before. It ain't easy being a parent goose, a novice gosling, or step aunts and step uncles. ;D Because of no identifying marks or actual onsite observations we'll never know for sure if #6 was #6. It was just the one chosen to get to goose heaven and prepare a final nest for all to follow. :-*

On their Facebook post when asked if the gosling that didn't make it was the last one to jump, Amy replied:
"quite possibly. The last one jumped off towards the y-branch, which is consistent with where we found it."

N2BMG I'll be darned a square bole of goose down is very warm isn't it.
Oh' at such elevation I long for such warmth and swaddle.
Remember the crib rails of N2B are now way more gosling friendly and way less bald eagle juvenile crib rails.
The landing zone below N2B (not as high as N1) is receptive.
I sure wish I had put some more of that stuff in my sleeping bag
More toes and finger tips not missing digits as it were - 25 ° F

BL - Brrr, stay warm!
Ginger - Thanks for the RRP reply to your post. :D
Puff - I think you are pretty much on spot with your summaries. :)
In case someone missed this yesterday. N2BMG got a lil wind blown yesterday.

Lisa! fantastic Screen cap s of the rare piebald cg! I enlarged the black and white neck and the pattern is exquisite. Rrp may want to document this!
-
Thanks, Lisa and Karen! Very cool to see the piebald Canada Goose with this new pair at N1!! I looked up some information about piebald Canada Geese vs. leucistic, and there are examples of both types in the Canada Geese population. Lucky to spot the "spotted" - piebald necked - Canada Goose on the Decorah N1 nest live cam!! I found a few articles about variations of piebald in the Canada Goose, and sometimes it's on the neck, while other times the piebald coloration is on a different part of the body. Not very common to see it apparently. If they hatch any goslings on cam, it will be neat to see any reports in the area of any piebald offspring results as they molt into adult plumage.
-
I also read that colorization on a CG can be the result of a CG cross breeding with another type of goose such as a Snow Goose.
The articles were referring to them as Hybrid Canada Geese.
So this CG could be leucistic, piebald or a hybrid.
Pretty cool looking. I've never seen one before.
If this pair decides to stay at least we'll know for sure which one this one is. ;)
-
The piebald (odd coloration) goose surely is an interesting addition to the gallery of geese here at RRP. BL, I agree that at least we will be able to identify one of the many!
The single egg at N1 was left alone and uncovered from midnight to about 7:00 this morning when the "pair of the day" landed. They are somewhat crabby with each other, the normal colored and larger of the two seems to be prodding at the piebald. Still, the piebald covered up the egg later in the morning and is sitting on it some of the time.
Several turkey vultures were eating at a very large dead fish near the Pond aroung 1:00 this afternoon. It has been raining here, too.
-
Purely based on the size of the CG's currently at N1 I think the piebald one is the female.
Great screen grab of the CG pair landing at N1 STL. 8)

I think you are right. She looks smaller, and the male is huge!

Had to giggle at your crabby comment.
Just from watching, it seems like most males peck or bite at the necks of their females when other geese fly by. I noticed it with MG & FG, but FG did not do it as much as this male does to the piebald.
They are very vocal that is for sure!

N2B update as of 3:00 this afternoon. No pips in the 4 goose eggs here. N2BMG rolled the eggs at about 8:30 AM and again at 9:15 as she was leaving the nest for a short while. While she was gone, an unknown goose landed on the nest then left within about a minute. This visitor has black speckles on its chest. Geese are moving around this morning, flying up or down the creek below the nest.
MG returned, got disturbed and left without covering the eggs. She didn't go far because you can hear her honking off-camera. She returned soon, and the N2BFG followed. He stayed a few minutes then left. Whew! Since then, MG has been sitting and napping.
-
HM & HD were perching in the Pasture Tree branches at dawn today, with the new N6 nest between them.
At N1, the piebald female goose is caring for the egg laid by another goose right after the Jump. She covers and uncovers and rolls it, but has not laid an egg of her own. The gander at N1 is on the nest with her or very close by most of the time. This pair is very vocal.
-
Morning pics from Decorah - One of the pair was perched in the pines by raceways early this morning, and tried to do some fishing. They were both seen next perched in the trees by N2B, it looked like. They moved across the hatchery to the fishing perch abover the creek, and then HD flew down the creek to the right to perch.

Lisa, great pics. Good to see HM & HD around, and sure hope that N6 works out as an active nest for them next season. I missed them perching in the "catkin" tree but got a pic of N6; it's gonna be hard to see when the leaves all come out.
Meanwhile, the piebald + pair of geese are acting like the single egg in N1 is theirs. Maybe it will hatch in a few weeks.
-
At N2B, no hatching yet. It's possible there's a pip, but I think it's just dirt on one of the eggs.
-
This morning, there's a pip in one of the four eggs at N2B. Whoopie!
-
At N1, the piebald goose couple are caring for their adopted egg. She has been on and off the nest a couple times before noon.
HM & HD are nearby, perching in the hatchery pines and also in the Pasture Tree where they are building N6.

Yes! The eggs at N2B are hatching this afternoon. According to the Chat, one has completely hatched and one is partially out of the shell as of about 4:00. On the rewind the cam ops are showing whatever N2BMG will allow! It's pretty windy, so she is sitting tight.
Here's a pic of the first gosling at N2B in 2024, taken at 4:25PM.

Early this morning at N2B - two goslings so far, and just seen a pip in 3rd egg

Yes definitely 2 goslings out and about.
Definite pip on 1 egg and 1 possible pip on the other remaining.
I think they'll all be "out" by the end of the day. :)

It looks like all the 3rd one has to do is shake his/her butt helmet off and it will be scrambling around with it's sibs soon. :D
I also saw that when mom rolled the 4th egg there was down poking out of the 'pointy end' of the egg. 8)

The N2BMG is hiding the unhatched with great care this morning! I've seen two goslings and maybe a feather or two of the third so far.

Lisa, you are so right, just didn't watch long enough. Is the fourth egg pipped?
She hasn't really given any good peeks, but I don't think that egg will pip. I think that 4th egg will be the intruder egg, which was 7 days behind her last egg she laid. It will be a miracle if it hatches!
-
But, maybe the longish straight line is a crack in the 4th eggshell. Keep your fingers crossed!
Then I backed up about 5 minutes, and when MG rolled the egg, looks like a pip in the end.

MG and one gosling has jumped at N2B, and the two remaining goslings are still on nest. I hope MG or FG continue to honk, and get them to come down.

Looks like I missed the N2B jumping act last evening, and today the video feed is on highlights. I found a view of 3 goslings with the parent geese on the ground under the nest. It's best to watch the video to see them moving. One unhatched egg is still in the nest, likely abandonded and also likely it is the one laid by the intruder goose so a week later than the ones that eventually hatched.
Congratulations to the N2B geese for a mostly successful breeding season! :D
And many thanks to the cam ops for following this nest again. ;D
-
But the shot of them on ground looks like the cam was on highlight? Wonder if they found more than the one they were looking for. :-\
-
Yes, Nora, the highlight was on. Just guessing, but I'd say the parents found all three that jumped. No idea of the time. I'm sure that RRP will post a video of the whole jumping process and have the times included.
Things should be more peaceful for HM & HD to build that new N6 nest. The single goose egg yet to hatch nearby is at N1, adopted by the piebald female and her gander.
-
The cam ops at Decorah have been watching a pair of geese with only one gosling around the Pond all day. Makes me wonder if this is the N2B family and only one gosling made it across the road!
-
HM & HD perching in bluff area trees this morning. The piebald goose at N1 is still caring for the adopted egg. Cam ops are following the pair of geese and single gosling in the Pond area that might be the N2B family.
About 7:00, nice video of the Moon setting between the groups of Hatchery pine trees.

Here's the most recent/last update on the N2B geese from RRP.

We had gone by the hatchery yesterday and saw the piebald goose swimming on Trout Run and I'm assuming her mate, they were "talking" back and forth. She sure is pretty.
I wonder if that is "our" pair with the single gosling awt the pond. We'll never know for sure.

Nora very cool.
I think the pair of CG's and their gosling on the pond are the N2B geese that just jumped.
That piebald mother goose is brooding an egg in NEST ONE.

Baby G is getting big, and making its way around the pond. Cute moment this morning, when they crawled up under MG's wing to take a nap after their walkabout. Then, popped up after nap time.

Great pics, STL
If that egg at N1 hatches, it will be a miracle.

Snapped this pic at 4:49am, HM & HD must have spent the night in new nest tree, and a pic of the goose family close to the visitors center.

Today there's an additional family of geese at the Pond. They have 5 or 6 little goslings. Eventually they will all form a group, and one goose will keep watch while the other adults feed, etc.
-
Creek is running really high and fast, must have been heavy rain yesterday. All our bird friends here seem to be OK.
HD (I think) had a fish on a large pasture branch about 10:00. Branch shown in orange circle in the wider view, which also includes N6 in the Pasture tree at the upper right.
-
Beautiful break of day and views of the eagles and N6. Things are same as yesterday for the various geese.

Lisa, lovely pics, and it's so good to see HM and HD with a new nest nearer-by.
Any info on what happened to the nest they built out of sight for the RRP cameras, and any eggs that were laid?

I have not seen RRP mention what could have happened, but I do have a friend who went to Decorah a week after we started seeing them building N6. He said, the nest on other side of the bluffs was still there. So, not sure what happened.

At one point, Lisa, didn't someone post snaps of Bluff with white puffy heads peeking out?

Morning pics from Decorah - HD was on the lower bluff tree this morning and HM arrived on N6 tree. At one point she was in a heraldic pose. The one gosling family, looking cute.

HM is so beautiful perching in the N6 tree, and that blue sky is perfect background.
-
HM or HD has been perching at the N6 tree. And geese are feeding on the banks and in the high, rapid creek. Turkey vultures perched in dead trees, I believe at the far end of the N1 bluffs, out towards the antenna tower.
-
Great pics, STL :)
It was cool to see the geese families hanging out together this morning.
-
Lisa, yes, very cool. Near noon today, the larger goose family took a walking path across the field and emerged near the eagles' fishing corner. The N1 family followed the same path a bit later.
The piebald female goose is still caring for her adopted egg. Will it hatch soon? I hope so.

Baby geese are sure cute! The two families were feeding close together some of the time this morning. The N1 gosling is bigger than the others, probably several days older.
Views of the creek upstream from N1 show plenty of water flowing now.
-
Goose families doing their thing same as yesterday. The piebald mom goose rolled the unhatched egg back and forth several times about 10:30 AM. She might be encouraging the chick to move, or she might just be bored sitting there day after day. It's not too late for this egg to hatch. It was laid at N1 soon after the first goslings jumped, so about April 16th, and incubation is 25 to 28 days.
-
I hope the egg hatches. I wonder if birds can detect the warmth of a live baby in the egg. Or if the piebald is just hoping.
-
So warm and cute watching little gooseling trying to follow M and D on that dunking thing they keep doing. It does go underwater - like why am I doing this for? - but doesn't stay bottoms up for long. The next thing would be to figure out what it's suppose to do while upside down. MG and FG are right there giving pointers. :D About 9:25 nest time if you want the watch.

Forgot to post yesterday, but looked like HM perched upstream bluff side for a good while yesterday morning.

STL - The first pic of yours, the BE this morning was on M2. Mom, Dad Decorah and DM2 use to perch in that tree all the time. It is good to see that HM or HD is using that tree now.
-
I remember M2 as a favorite perching spot for previous eagle pairs! Thanks for the tree ID, Lisa.
-
Looks like the geese made it through the storms yesterday. The piebald goose & mate are still paying some attention to the adopted egg. I've become a doubter that it will hatch. Cam ops got long distance views of two BEs perched high in trees way upstream from N1, too far for a decent pic, but it's probably HM & HD.
-
Around 5:16am this morning, raccoon came to nest, picked up egg, rolled it around, and left it.
-
Thank you for observing this and posting it, Lisa. I am surprised. I'd have thought a raccoon would chow down on an egg.
-
Looks like the raccoon was a young-ish one and didn't know how to get into the egg. On rewind about 2:00 AM the raccoon rolled the egg, then dug under it in the damp nest materials before leaving. Backing up the rewind to maybe 10 PM, the egg looks either damaged or dirty. I vote for dirty, because the raccoon rolled the egg all around and the shell looked intact.
After daylight, the piebald goose cam back and sat again. She is off and on the egg through 11AM. Dedicated.

I love the little parades by the goose families!
About 2:30 this afternoon, some other goose pair visited N1 and even sat on the egg briefly while the piebald mom was away. She and her gander returned and loudly chased the intruders away.

HM & HD perched in dead trees, not sure of location, for several hours from daylight on, together and then just one. If there were panning views, I missed them on the rewind.
No pics, but geese are having a lazy grazing and resting day at the Pond.
-
Eagle perched in same dead tree from a couple days ago, I think it's out by the red-barn farm up the road from the horse barn and N1.
And the unhatched egg at N1 has broken, probably got by a raccoon yesterday or so. Someone will know what happened.
-
STL, the egg was broken byt the racoon sometime after midnight. Took this screen shot early morning, when I got up.

I can't help but feel sad for her. I hope there will be more eggs for her to tend in the future. It would be nice if it were elsewhere than the Decorah nest.

I hope she finds a nice spot too, other than N1. :)
-
Lisa, from your pic of the raccoon and the broken goose egg, it appears that the contents were liquid. So that would mean that it never developed beyond when laid, and I wonder if that means it was not fertilized?

Lisa, great pics of the new favorite hangout for HM and HD, up at the far end of the creek.
The goslings have gotten to look more like adult geese in the past few days. Smaller in size, but darker feathers coming in. Baby birds don't stay babies for very long.

Juvenile bald eagle perched on dead limb upstream from N1 early this morning, then probably the same eagle on a round bale at the farm up the road from the horse barn about 9:00 AM.
Watch a muskrat gathering den materials at the edge of the Pond about 9:15 AM.

Thank you all for the pics of HM and HD. Apparently, they have built another new nest? I wonder why they did not have a clutch this year.

Thank you all for the pics of HM and HD. Apparently, they have built another new nest? I wonder why they did not have a clutch this year.
lil - They started building a nest in the tree where I have the red arrow in early April, and cam ops have not shown them there in that tree lately, so maybe they have stopped and are on vacation. It seemed like they had a clutch this year, as we saw them taking fish from the pond over to the other side of the bluffs, that was about a week before they started building the new nest. Maybe something happened to the hatchlings...we will never know.

My pics area about the same as yours, and the cam ops get gold stars for finding these eagles today.

From my understanding it is still located behind the Walmart, and close to where the other nest fell down that they had built.
-
For all their size, eagle nests seem to be fairly fragile, and fall pretty often!
-
The Bald Eagle nest itself is not at all fragile I can assure you !
Pip & I cut a fairly good rug in a abandoned BE nest 1 night.
Tied in from good wood above.
It's all about the TREE.
Safest correct crotch is always the key.
Think constantly weight absorbing BE flying beaver lumber from natural earth materials flown up into a tree.
It's all about the Location, L, L , tree type, leverage, weight mathematics that is the fragile variable that we humans are aware of. ;D
I really don't think they think about it at all as it's there merciless genetics & evolutionary drive to just build and add to the nest. :-*

We're just learning of and digging on some Mom & DM2 news out of Decorah, IA.

STLbf this is the general location of Mom and DM2's nests behind the Walmart on the Upper Iowa River in Decorah.
They have built two nests (N3 & N4) in this general area.
See Map Images attached below.
2020 - They left N2B and the Hatchery area.
2021 - Mom Decorah & DM2 moved about 1.7 miles to the NE behind the Walmart on the banks of the UIR. They built a new nest dubbed N3.
They successfully had 3 eaglets fledge from N3 in 2021. D37, D38 and D39.
2022 - The N3 nest "failed". No known Eaglets.
2023 - They built another nest very near N3 dubbed N4.
The N4 nest produced no known eaglets in 2023.
2024 - Mom & DM2 - D40 successfully fledges from N4. :) :) :) 8) 8) 8)
Updated Decorah Eagles nest records .pdf also attached.
If anyone notices any discrepancies from the official RRP records don't hesitate to let me know and I will correct it.
I use the "simplified" D naming convention in the early years to cut down on the confusion. ;D
-
BrokenLug, your general area looks pretty much like the area that I seen when I went to ATF.
-
BL, thanks for the maps! I've never been there in person, so these are really helpful for "long-distance" viewing. ;)
Everything green looks lush from all the rain. N1 is producing a salad bar. I enjoyed the "old" view of the Y this morning, thanks to the cam ops.

For all who don't follow RRP on Facebook, the After the Fledge info to register was posted on Facebook yesterday evening.

Lisa, good catch of the pic of HD on the Spooky Tree. Wonder if the Hatchery eagles will reclaim N1 or continue with building N6! The N2B cam is on Highlights, so no idea what condition it is in. I'm sure there will be much speculation during ATF.

Game delayed for 5-6 months, STL. Patience is a virtue. :-\

STL - That cam will most likely be on Highlights till next Goose season. It was like that this past year, if I remember correctly. :D

BE was seen fishing pond early morning and headed to spooky tree to eat. Hard to tell who it was as it was so foggy. HM flew to Spooky tree, BE vocalized and flew out. HM flew out to flower bluff tree. Another BE (most likely one of the Hatchery's) was spotted on pines by hatchery office, perched for a while before heading out [ast N1 * N2B heading East.

I watched him (?) for quite a while too Lisa. I had the feeling too that it might be HD or HM checking things out for damage done by outsiders and mother nature. Maybe sizing up things for 2024-2025 we hope.

I've been watching NN, too. Looks to be our pair enjoying the peace and calm in their neighborhood. Lots happened to their season this year. We haven't heard much, if anything, about the two homeless little ones. I hope they got enough learning to move into the next stage of their growing.
Now just read in chat that cam is going to be shut down next week 8/1. Not sure which cam they're talking about HN or NN. Seems to be NN? Wondering what M & D plans are.

Puff, this is what the RRP Facebook post said about the cams being shut down.
Raptor Resource Project
Happy Fri-yay, everyone! We'll be shutting down the Decorah and Decorah North cameras on Friday, August 2, at 5:00 PM CDT. We know it's early, but we have a lot of work to do: a rebuild at the North Nest, repairs on the Mississippi Flyway, which was damaged by wind, maintenance at Trempealeau and Xcel Energy's Fort St. Vrain plant, and two or three nestbox replacements, just to name a few things on our list. It's going to be a very busy fall!

This was on my Facebook page today ...My heart is broken! 💔 I just learned my beloved friend Jean Sawyer passed away on Saturday! She was like a second Mom to me. She always stood by me through thick & thin. I am forever blessed to have known such an incredible woman! May you dance with the angels, my beautiful friend! I love you! 😘
I thought everyone would want to know. I hope this is okay.
Ruby, Jean as in oma on chat? So sorry! Prayers to her family.

I am saddened by your loss, Ruby. (hugs)

Lisa, thanks for the pics of HM and HD. I'd forgotten about those tail feather markings on HD. It would be great if they decide to re-nest at N1, or finish th e nest they started in the Pasture tree, N6?
Do you have pics from ATF to post any time soon? We'll need something to look at and comment about while the cameras are shut off.

I did not bring my big camera to ATF this year, as I did not think I would see anything. I only had my cell, and I really don't think the pics do justice from the cell. Pic below from cell.
A friend of mine who visits Decorah to take pics, told me the last few times that he had seen HM & HD they were hanging out E of N2B along the bike trail, closer to Hwy 9. ON Saturday morning, as I was heading from Hwy 9 down Trout Run Rd, I turned to see if I could see anyone in that area, and sure enough one of the Hatchery's was there.

RRP Facebook post regarding cams....
Raptor Resource Project
Hello, Mr. North! One of our camera operators reported that Mr. North visited the new north nest this morning, where he moved a stick around and ate a fish he caught! We'll keep our talons crossed until we're sure the North's have moved into their new home, but this is a very good sign.
Missing the Norths and Decorah in general? We're turning our Decorah and Decorah North streams back on on Friday, October 11, at 10AM CDT.
-
Happy news about the camera going live here at Decorah on OCT 11!!
Also good to know that the cam ops are able to see what's going on even when the cams are off to us watchers.

Wouldn't it be nice for RRP to put a camera out by the fishing corner for closer views of that bluff area? The wish list is long!
Did you catch the raccoon foraging in the creek on the N1 side, around 8:00 this morning? Same time as the GBH in the pine tree.

STL From RRP FB 3 days ago:
"While HM and HD don't appear inclined to come back to N1 or to adopt N2B, we have seen them fishing the pond and carrying sticks to the east. We'll go scouting for their latest nest and for Mom and DM2 once more leaves are down".

Great pics, Lisa, as usual! Looks like the cornfield is getting harvested so we'll probably see deer feeding on the dropped ears and kernels in coming days.
Thanks to the cam ops for lots of panning views today, and some closeups of the trees as they lose the intense colors of fall.

Early this morning, it looked like HD on bluff perch based on shape. A short while later, you could see someone fly in from the left to the tree top above HD. Cam op zoomed out when HD flew off, and you could see HM perched on tree top above bluff perch. She broke off a stick, and flew over to E side of bluffs. She use to perch there alot last season.

About 8:00 this morning, eagle perching at the fishing corner, possibly HM. Flew down to the creek then disappeared for a while, then perching in trees under the power line in the same area. Machinery noise in the background. After noon, eagle, likely HM, perching in high bluff tree, continued machinery noise doesn't seem to disturb the eagle.

About 8:00 this morning, HM or HD caught a fish at the pond, then flew to lower bluff tree to eat it.

Yes, it was great to see them on Giving Tuesday!

Not sure who this birdy was on the pine this morning, but my guess it was not HM or HD. They were tracking and left pine, when most likely one of the Hatchery's flew by, and was escorted across Trout Run Rd, E of N2B.

She is so gorgeous! Thanks for the pics, Lisa.

Thanks for the loverly pics Lisa- It does give us hope STL BL. Wouldn't it be wonderful if. . . .
Just got over to NN - Action there, too. Second time they've spent the night at their new abode. All looking promising.

OK - so what's happening at Hatchery nest area. On full screen it's in a line of trees, and at least 8 pairs of eagles on various branches. Are they showing a feed from another location?

Puff, I believe this view of where the eagles are being shown might be behind N2B, as cam op just went down the trees and I see a house below. There is a tree line right behind the cornfield if you are standing on the trail by N2B.

Bald eagle palooza in DE today! Early morning It started out with 1 BE, then 3 were seen, then a sub adult joined, and then this afternoon lots more joined.

I was thinking either of two spots, Lisa. One at the hatchery; but then the second background showed a bit of a house and a silo. Maybe the trees to the west of the hatchery. And, did we maybe see a bit of a view of the cliff wall?
Interesting - Unusual
The one right above is the one that has a group of eagle pairs. See the silos at the top? Haven't seen that many in one location ever here before. OK, I did in Alaska.

The gaggle of eagles made me think of Alaska, too! Most seem to be adults, but there are a few younger ones. Awesome to have so many visitors at Decorah. I haven't figured out exactly where they are either. Help us out, RRP!

STLbf this is all the info I could find on the Eagle-Palooza in the hatchery area yesterday.
Welcome to the Eagle-Palooza! But where did all those eagles come from? Our camera operators reported three eagles this morning: HM, HD, and an unknown adult.
All three were seen perched together in a tree to the north of the hatchery
– a little unusual, but nothing we haven’t seen before…at least until about 1:50PM this afternoon, when 35 or so of their best friends showed up!

Thanks BL. There's info on the RRP Home page this morning. Apparently it's unusual for large groups of eagles to congregate around the Hatchery. The camera is on Highlights so no new info as yet on their whereabouts this morning. It's also below zero in the area today!!! :o
Nothing's moving at the Flyway, GSB, or DNN. Glad there are no eggs in nests yet.

HM & HD have been busy on another cold morning in Decorah. HD was perched in the lower bluff tree, HM flew in perched for a while then headed over to the pine by pavilion. This afternoon both are on bluff perch.

It would be so cool if a pair of those extra eagles would set up housekeeping on one of the nests with cams. I'd thought our two D eagles would but apparently not. I have nothing against the geese, but my heart is with the eagles.

A very foggy morning in Decorah, but HM & HD showed up for a bit. Both perched in the lower bluff tree, then HD flew out to tree by bridge.

The same 3 BE's that was perched N of N2B, was still there this morning. One left and headed towards the hatchery after a while. Guessing the HM & HD has been entertaining a visitor? ;D

Wild Side column: Remembering Bob Anderson and Tim Mason, who were among leaders in the outdoors

I have been blessed to know many great conservationists and to call some of them my friends.
My favorites include the late Bob Anderson, the godfather of the Decorah eagles and the guy who put peregrine falcons back on their ancestral homes on the Mississippi bluffs; and the late Tim Mason, the environmental activist who made the National Park Service live up to its mission to protect the sacred Native American grounds at Effigy Mounds.
Both Bob, who died in 2015 at age 64, and Tim, who died in 2018 at age 67, were underdogs who sacrificed to achieve environmental triumphs with never a thought of their own aggrandizement.
Anderson, the founder and director of the Raptor Resource Project, helped save peregrine falcons from extinction, led the successful effort to reintroduce them to their historic eyries on the bluffs of the Mississippi River and then educated and warmed the hearts of multitudes with an internet nest camera that documented the lives of a bald eagle family.
The Decorah eagles were a metaphor for their godfather. As they persevered through egg-chilling blizzards, infestations of pathogenic black flies and tree-felling, nest destroying wind storms, Anderson overcame financial hardship and skeptics who doubted his innovative techniques could succeed.
In the wake of the pesticide DDT's devastating effect on raptors, Anderson quit a good-paying job to move to Decorah in 1996 to devote his life to the well-being of falcons and other raptors. He exhausted his life savings to fund his falcon recovery efforts.
When live falcons were extremely rare, Anderson used artificial insemination to breed captive females at his acreage near Decorah. His chicks, released at nest boxes attached to bridges and power plant smokestacks, had by 2018 produced more than 1,500 progeny — a decisive factor in the birds' removal from the endangered species list.
But those birds would not nest on the Mississippi River bluffs until Anderson devised a technique in which the chicks were released from simulated rock boxes atop a bluff at Effigy Mounds National Monument, imprinting in the chicks’ brains the concept of cliffs as nesting sites.
Friends and associates of the man responsible for the wildly popular Decorah eagles webcam said Anderson likely will be remembered more for his leading role in the peregrine falcon recovery and his successful effort against long odds to restore peregrine falcons to the bluffs of the Mississippi.
Anderson himself considered his role in restoring falcons to the Mississippi River cliffs his greatest accomplishment.

Tim Mason of McGregor stands near a creek Dec. 22 that was recently littered by a farmer leasing the Department of Natural Resources' land. Mason noticed the land was being mistreated and the farmer was in violation of several regulations on the three-year lease. This prompted Mason to take action. The DNR is now taking a closer look at lessees who may be mistreating the land they are renting. (Nikole Hanna/The Gazette)

Mason of McGregor, a big, tough river rat with a spiritual affinity for the bluffs and backwaters of the Mississippi, bucked big government and big money in his mission to preserve the region’s natural grandeur.
He made his bones in the early 1980s with his effort to save Bloody Run Creek from the ravages of rerouting U.S. Highway 18 around Marquette and McGregor. Though the project eventually went through, it did so with concessions to limit damage to the creek, its valley, wetlands and endangered species.
River and bluff lovers also appreciate Mason for his successful effort to halt the costly and contentious River Bluff Resorts project, a $138 million planned complex west of McGregor in the valley of Sny Magill trout stream.
Mason’s masterpiece — the righting of an egregious wrong at Effigy Mounds — grew out of his lengthy earlier service as a seasonal worker at the national monument, where he learned its features, internalized its mission and cemented his reverence for the land and the mound builders.
Mason said he could not believe his eyes when he began to notice trails, boardwalks and buildings encroaching upon the mounds. Through Freedom of Information Act document requests, he found the facility had spent more than $3 million over a decade to build more than 78 illegal structures.
Mason sought the assistance of Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, an advocacy group representing government workers, and together they pressured the Parks Service to acknowledge its mistakes and adopt corrective measures.
My most emotional moment as a reporter occurred at Mason’s funeral when six uniformed National Park Service employees filed into St. Mary Catholic Church in McGregor to pay their respects to the man who exposed the agency's desecration of Native American graves it was commissioned to protect.
In hindsight, I wish I’d started a slow clap like you see in the movies when colleagues recognize the hero’s deeds. I’m sure everyone in the church would have soon been clapping, too.

Thanks for the piece on Bob & Tim, Lori :)

Thanks from me, too, LORI.
Good views of HM and HD perching around the N1 area about 7:30 this morning, then at about 8:00 they were together in trees way upstream from N1. Watch a great flyover from that perch, past the Y and over the N1 tree and out of sight -- no pic but catch it on the rewind.

Lisa, thanks for all your great pics of the eagles at Decorah in 2024. It's heartening to see them perching and fishing the pond and the Trout Run Creek area. Let's hope they make a New Year's resolution to nest somewhere within camera range in 2025. ;D
