Decorah Eagles 2024
« on: January 01, 2024, 12:17:05 PM »

Happy New Year from the Decorah hatchery pair up in their favorite bluff trees this morning.

Also looks like we might have a new camera location, see the middle pic below.

New Year all set up in the Forum.  Thanks to RRP.

About 8:30 this morning, HD brought a fish to the Spooky Tree in the horse pasture near N1. He ate it all, then was joined for a while by HM.  Did I get the names right?

Morning pics from Decorah - It was a busy morning around the hatchery.  RT hawk was perched on the pine by visitors center.  From the vocals this morning, you could tell who was who and where they were perched.  HD was in tree near N2B, while HM was above the cams, an almost adult interloper was perched near HD in a tree near N2B.

Lots of perching today - HM perched on tree tops near bluff perch, HD perched on tree about mid bluff, and both perched tree top near bluff perch

Lisa, thanks for your perching pics today!  We're ready to see the new camera in action out by the bluffs.   :)

HD did alot of perching again this morning, before heading down to creek, and getting some breakfish.  It looked like a nice size fish.

At the last presentation, John and Amy talked about new camera at Decorah to get views of HM and HD's new nest location and maybe also closer views of the "fishing corner" and bluff area, so perhaps setting up something at the pavilion.  Any news from RRP or others who really know what's going on?

STLbf there has been a PTZ camera mounted on top of the pavilion for a few years now.

BL, thanks for the pic of the pavilion and clear labels for locations.  I knew about the pavilion camera, but since I have never been to Decorah, I'm probably mistaken.  If I can find a pic that shows the structure I thought did not have a camera and was close to those bluffs where the new nest is located -- I'll post it.  This one is on the Retention Pond side of the creek, and not exactly what I was thinking of.  Sigh.

STLbf your last pic is from the Pavilion cam.
The problems with viewing HM & HD if they choose to use the top of the bluffs BE nest in 2024 are in my opinion.

1) There's no way RRP is going anywhere near the new nest this time of year even if they wanted to.
2) The base of the 'nest tree' might be located on private property. Permission, Permits and Privacy.
3) It could be logistically challenging to do so even if they could.

I strongly do recall the RRP Navy however.  :-*

4) HM & HD could move like Eagles do again in 2025.

5) That "the new nest" is UP in elevation from the available cameras.
6) The nest is I believe tucked into the trees and just out of Genghis Cam's range.

So the N1 cam [@ 1,300 ft away] and Pavilion cam [@ 800 ft away] just can't quite peek at this nest location.

STL - I have a friend who has been to Decorah just recently (12/29) to take pics of HM & HD, and also of Mom & DM2.  With his permission, I will ask if it is ok to post his pic here showing the new nest.

He says, the new nest is on the other side of the bluffs, and cannot be seen by the pavilion cam on the hatchery side.  It is on the slope on the other side, near where they perch on bluff perch.

Awesome work from BrokenLug and Lisa on info and pics about cameras and new nest location.  The cam ops must be reading our Forum posts, because there's a pretty clear view about noon today of the structure I have been thinking about as a new camera location: see orange arrow in pic below.  I believe it also shows up in BL's pics, but without a label, so it might be private property??

However, since the new nest is on the other side of the bluff, a new camera anywhere on the side we are used to won't be of any help for seeing that.  It would, however provide closer views of the eagles' activities in the fishing and perching area at the base of the bluffs.

HM or HD perched on the large branch above N1 about 12:30 this afternoon!  Thank you for visiting for a closeup.   :D
