Hey while we're doing up our eagle stuff on top of the Bluffs this 2024 iteration, above the ever-flowing Trout Run from Siewers Spring.

Our valley carved by Trout Creek will flow again, and this is the best windy bug free Cottonwood tree over that river.

STL, the first thing I look for is the missing talon on the right foot.  If all talons are there, its HM

Puff - HD injured his talon sometime before they laid eggs last season.  It was a bloody looking mess for a while, and then it finally fell off.

Hmmmm, I could be totally wrong, but I thought HD grew a new talon.  Healing took months.  Let's comb through our archived pics.

STL - I combed thru my pics and found this one from Jan 2024 when HD visited the Y.  The talon is missing on the middle toe.

Puff - RRP wrote about it on their Facebook page back in Feb 2023. Here is the original post. 

What happened to HD's foot? On February 3, several sharp-eyed volunteers and fans noticed that one of his toes appeared to be injured. We talked with Dr. Laura Johnson and Master Bander Dave Kester about the injury.
It isn't easy to diagnose a condition based on photos, but Laura told us that it looks like an injury (possibly a constriction or bite) caused by a loss of blood supply to HD's toe and nailbed. We first noticed the injury after he came into the nest with a squirrel. As cute as they look to us, squirrels are notorious for being fast, hard biters - potentially risky prey even for an experienced raptor like HD. We haven't seen any string or twine on HD's toes or in the nest.
We're not sure what will happen next. HD's talon might fall off. Whether it regrows has everything to do with how much damage there is to the germinal cells from which the talon emerges. But  there is no evidence of swelling in the rest of the toe proximal to the injury and the rest of the foot looks good. Laura thought we could be cautiously optimistimc that the incident won't have a significant impact on him; Dave told us that his first hawk had similar damage to her hallux claw. Smackers did not lose her talon and eventually the scab broke off to reveal beautiful new skin beneath. We're crossing our talons for the best possible outcome.
We're also watching HD very closely. At this point, he appears to be healthy and is still eating, bringing materials into the nest, and helping to get everything ready for eggs. While we haven't seen a successful copulation yet - like DM2, HD seems a little shy - his eagle-tect instincts are on point! Both eagles seem to be shifting their focus from sticks to soft materials as they move into the final stages of nest bowl prep and egg cup construction.
We'll keep everyone posted. Thanks to our camera operators and the eagle council for keeping us on top of everything.

Lisa, good to post the post about HD's toe-talon injury last year.  Here are several pics from when I noticed it in February and the progression into March as it looked worse and worse and HD was limping and favoring the foot.

Watchers are very relieved that HD recovered and seems able to do everything he needs to without that central talon.

We stopped at the hatchery on our way by.  All we saw were geese and more geese.  A pair were on N1.  A couple were settled up by one of the tanks and a slew of them over by the pond.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO POST THIS! This is the nest of the "other eagles" outside Decorah I check on every year.  I THINK I posted them with Decorah and marked that it was the "other eagles" other years.  Anyway I assume this is mom and it looks like she's on an egg or eggs!  I took this one and my camera battery died.    I hope they have good luck this year, they've built that newer nest up more since last year.
