STL, thanks for the chart. Our sub adult could be a 2.5 year old. In any case, it is learning some valuable lessons from HD and HM about the territorial imperative. It needs another 2 years to practice stealing, invading territory and surviving both offense and defense moves. I wish it well so that, years from now, it can find and mate, defend its territory, and put more bald eagles into the world.

Lisa tks for the snaps from this AM

STL I have that very same head chart from 9 yrs  ago! Don't recall who posted it to me though.
Stil use it from time to time.

lilbirdz agree w/you 1000% . We need more eagles, esp bald eagles.

The sub adult has a dark (black) bill.  I'm thinking it's 1 1/2 years old according to the chart.

The sub may believe they have the right to be there - if they are one of the Decorah offspring.  If only there were bands ....

Phyl, I was just looking at the same view of HM on the right and HD trying to figure out which tree they were perching in.  It's T1, from the view of the new camera!  Wait long enough or move the rewind until there is a longer view or panning.  Noticed the buds on the twigs.  Is this tree a maple, a cottonwood, or something else?  The expert watchers will know.  Some mid-western trees bloom in January! That's why our allergies may be annoying, from the pollen that doesn't get recorded in the weather report stats.

Another mystery location solved. HD (I think) was perched in a tree near a fallen log, 3:30 on the rewind.  Such good camouflage, couldn't see the eagle until the closeup view.  Pulling back, the tree is located at the base of a bluff area that we watch a lot, and the eagles favor.

Love your morning pics!  Here are several more.

About 7:30 AM, HD made two passes over the Retention Pond and got a fish (I think) on the second. Pic from eating on a T1 branch immediately after.  Then both were on the nest for a brief time. HD has the bloody beak in the pic.

10:30 finds a Sub-Adult perched near the Fishing Corner.  I'm thinking it is the same sub-a that visited N1 a couple days ago.  HM perched right at the Fishing Corner at 11:00. She flew off without a fish.
