Good Morning Beakers!

BL, your time in CA is still with you, the time you will never forget... You have a lot of memorable times you have shared with us and we are honored.

Lani, yes, we think it was the conch (local food ) he ate that I didn't eat!  That is the only explanation. Your poor sister, I hate to think one can get a bug like that here in the US! Oh those cute little baby sloths! Pretty sunset over Seal Island!

baz, good to hear that all is okay! Sometimes life gets busy, that is for sure. We all do what we can!

tsk, the days that move like molasses... in the winter. It's like the cold just slows things down. And sometimes we just don't feel like doing anything!

oldguy, going to Menards today to stock up on peanuts for the rest of the winter! Thanks for the tip! And thanks for the entertainment goodies!

Lisa, love yesterday's morning coffee cup, I would buy that one if I saw it in a store!

CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc.
We were deeply saddened to learn of the overnight passing of SW Eagle Cam eaglet E24. CROW was given permission to retrieve the deceased eaglet, and with the invaluable assistance of our friends at Joshua Tree, Inc, we were able to successfully recover E24. The next step is to conduct a necropsy to try to determine the cause of death. CROW remains on standby, ready to assist with any further needs or actions related to the nest or the eagle family. We truly appreciate the support and understanding of the public as we continue to work on behalf of wildlife in need.

BL   Good perspective on Top 10!

CLYNN  Shades of red/orange this AM  :)   Am so glad they were able to retrieve E24  Sure wonder what happened.  I hope it was something "genetic" vs man made that caused its death.

Just read that E25 fell from the nest and died!!! at  SWFL  :'(   SWFL Bald eagle nest tragedy.  E24 struggled and died on the nest yesterday at 43 days old.  Its sibling E25, 41 days old, struggled in the early morning hours and fell off the nest.  I've followed this nest for years.  My heart is shattered.  CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. retrieved the body of E24 yesterday for necropsy.  They retrieved the body of E25 minutes ago.
Praying for Mighty M15 and Lady F23 that they remain healthy.  M15 was acting oddly yesterday.  I am very heartbroken by this awful tragedy.  Fly high E24 & E25.  Rest easy in  the loving wings of this nests Matriarch Harriet.

Southwest Florida Eagle Cam
We are completely shattered to report, this morning around 3am; E25 started to have seizures similar to those of E24 and fell out the nest. CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, Inc. was able to get to the nest before sunrise to retrieve E25’s remains for a full necropsy.  This is uncharted territory for our cameras and viewers. We will keep the cameras streaming to continue to observe the health of M15 & F23. When we have more information we will post it here. Fly High & Forever Free E24 & E25. 🦅❤️

Prayers for M15 and F23!    Hopefully they will not be  affected by what ever this tragedy is!   M so loved young eagles and must be grieving terribly.   Things seemed to be going so well!
Low 60’s today. No snow, a few water puddles  here and there.
Third morning picture is pretty. clynn.  I would love that on my screen porch

OMG!  :'( :'( :'(
I can't believe this. I am very sorry to see this tragic news! I checked on E25 before I closed my post last night that was about before midnight central time. He was sleeping so peacefully. I am stunned.  My heart is with the SWFL family and supporters. 🙏

Kia ora koutou(hello everyone)

The Royalcam nest.
The Royalcam chick has hatched!!!

Weighing in at 286g
we will be tracking the chick’s weight up until fledging in September before this time the chick should weigh at least 7kg.

Currently GLG is on the nest RLK has been away for 14 days which is a long changeover.

https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/birds/birds-a-z/albatrosses/royal-albatross-toroa/royal-cam/rangers-work-for-royal-albatross/

The chick has been temporarily fostered to another nest where the egg has just started hatching and has had a fresh parent changeover ready to feed a new chick.

Where is RLK/A85?

The latest foraging trip of RLK/KA85 started out much closer to Pukekura than his first tagged trip when he went around Rekohū. He has subsequently headed north and has travelled a minimum of 1800 km in the last 14 days but looks like he is heading back now.  RLK/A85 GPS track, a distance of at least 1800 km flown so far.

Signal Station Trig chick being sprayed with Avian Insect Liquidator in preparation for return to a nest. The chick will be bought to the nest once there has been a changeover.

Good morning Beakers!

BL Yep, we woke up to a sprinkling of snow on the ground. It was nice to see. Drove Sadie to the dog park and she ran and ran! It's melted now.

Clynn, pretty morning posts.... it was my Sister in law that was seriously ill many years ago... Conch, abalone, octopus, squid can cause food poisoning if not prepared or handled correctly. I love calamari fried, it's the only way I eat it... The others I won't eat... Abalone is like chewing rubber, my mom loved it. My sister loves raw octopus, squid and conch, I always gave her my share.  ;D... I'm stunned about the SWFL babies, I can't believe both died.  :'(

Tsk, Love the new Budweiser ad! I'll look forward to seeing it during Super Bowl.... I am stunned at the sudden loss of both eaglets....  I pray M15 and F23 will remain healthy. I think we've all followed this nest following our first Decorah season.... Horst/Eagle-Duck found this cam and we followed it..  :'( :'( :'(

Hi Karen, Kb a sad day for our SWFL family. Hopefully, answers will come quickly and parents will be okay.

{{{Phyl}}} beautiful coffee cups... hopefully, the compression sleeve will arrive today. That's interesting you can see your x-rays before your appt. My hiking buddy's wife has cancer, she's in her 6th year, and will have to continue on a trial program for the rest of her life. Mayo's has a portal available for her to check daily for tests results, etc... take care  :)

Good Morning Beakers

Started my post early morning, but left to go to the endocrinologist.

oldguy - Thanks for all the videos.  We are in the 40's today, and it feels so good!

tsk - Sorry to hear about your friend getting the Norovirus.  I hear it is not fun to get.  Thanks for the SWFL info, so sad!   :'(

karen - SWFL  :'(  I hope M15 & F23 will be OK, too!

baz - Good to see you, and thanks for letting us know about the PM's.  I tested out another one today, and the person received it.   :D

Lani - Gorgeous pic from Seal Island.  Thanks for the Royal update.

BL - Thanks for the tunes.

clynn - I loved that cuppa too, and thought the same as you.

Good to hear you got some precip, Lani

Love your pretty picture, Lisa

Hang in there Phyl!

Well, my new laptop is arriving soon...my macbook air is 11 years old, has had it's battery changed 2 years ago so got me some more life, but now battery replacement is junk again and CPU is overheating.
It's time.

Although Chris will do the transition I hate that I won't have one for a bit coming up...

Been purging like some of you all...it must be that time..can always do more but since I procrastinate and hate it I'm proud of how much I've already done. When I get on a roll, it's that time to keep a going!

Hello Beakers.

A quick stop here to say I am so sad about the further sad news at the SWFL Eagles nest! RIP E25. Fly high and free forevermore, and with your sibling, E24. Talons crossed for The Mighty M and his F23!!  :-*  I'm trying not to guess before hearing necropsy news, but a 2nd nestling death after seizures makes me suspect poisoning of some kind. I hope that all nestovers left in the nest will be removed when E25's body is retrieved, in case there is any tainted prey that is left in the nest that can affect M and F23, or any other animal that mite take any of it. Just awful. I believe I recall Eagles - I don't recall all the details now from long ago - have had a history of severe illness and death from ingesting tainted prey in that general region. Does anyone else recall this history, by chance? Was it fish that had eaten toxic algae? or  maybe some other toxic substance from the waters the eagles in that region fished from. I'm not saying that is what happened to the SWFL nest's eaglets - just some history from that region that caused fish-eating birds to suffer.  Oh, I just googled, "is there a history of fish-eating raptors in swfl getting poisoned from eating fish from toxic waters." It returned info confirming my memory of this - fish-eating birds, including Osprey, in some areas of Florida after eating fish that had fed on toxic algae - "red tide" and other types of toxic algae found in warm waters. Part of that info returned by my search query included this info, "Yes, there is a documented history of fish-eating raptors, particularly Ospreys, in Southwest Florida (SWFL) becoming poisoned from eating fish contaminated by toxic algae blooms, commonly known as "red tide," which can lead to significant health issues and even death for the birds; this is especially concerning when the red tide is particularly severe in the area." And this info, too, "Red tide toxin: When harmful algal blooms occur, they produce toxins that accumulate in fish, which can then be ingested by raptors like Ospreys, causing poisoning. Symptoms in birds: Signs of red tide poisoning in birds can include lethargy, difficulty flying, seizures, and ultimately death. Monitoring and research: Wildlife organizations in SWFL often monitor bird populations and conduct necropsies to assess the impact of red tide on local raptors."

A related story from 2015 about a neurotoxin from algae killing Eagles in NC, SC, GA, TX, and other places - called hydrilla algae (not red tide), a horrible problem!
https://coastalreview.org/2015/10/toxic-algae-threatens-bald-eagles/

Another related story from 2021 in SWFL (Tampa Bay area), related to a different algal toxin, known as red tide:
https://www.fox13news.com/news/birds-suffer-red-tide-toxicity-after-eating-fish-poisoned-by-toxic-algae

I am NOT saying this is what led to the problems and deaths of the eaglets in the SWFL nest the last few days, but toxic algae is known to have been a problem in the past in that region. We will hopefully learn the cause of death for E24 and E25 from the necropsy. Thank you CROW and other helpers!  :-*

Prayers, and talons crossed for the SWFL Eagles, M and F23, to survive whatever is causing that issue at their nest, and for other Eagles, raptors, and all birds and wildlife in that area.
