Yeah I'm not exactly sure what we were seeing in the IR light above the pond this early AM.

At 1st I thought it was snowing in Decorah but I checked the weather at the nearby airport and there was no mention of snow.
BR=Mist _ FG=Fog.

I think it could have been a combo of mist, fog, rain and possibly bugs.

And it does appear that HM & HD may be dabbling with trying to build a nest in the crotch of that (dead?) tree on top of 'The Bluffs'.
Above Trout Run ??

They are definitely flying sticks in and possibly laying down a nest foundation.   :o   ???

Happy and sad both.
GOOD on cam op finding their new nest tree.
They are working together on a new nest wayyyy over there.

Did the fish scare them off?

Beautiful fall scene - peaceful - turkeys, horses, deer, owls.
Nature.

I too am beginning to think the combo of Camera Maintenance (climbing in the N1 tree), abundant fish gift deposit, construction of a new barn/garage behind The Barn and the very low water level in Trout Creek may have spooked this pair off a bit. ?

Of course they could just be doing what eagles do as the seasons change and are just "farting around" with nest building.

I do find it a bit odd that neither one has stepped talon into the N1 nest bole.   ???

We're all on Hatchery Eagle Time now so we shall see ....   ;)

I've been watching Hatchery pair all morning again.  As I said yesterday, it just looks like the're paying too much attention to cliff area.

Two mentions today. . . When John and crew gave starter base for N2 I don't remember it being fish for a lure.  Was it a squirrel or rabbitt, maybe a quail from the freezer?  But even watching them trying to bring sticks in today they weren't having too much success.  Couple of times one of them would be headed to that new tree with something in their talons, but they then seemed to drop it, showing up finally with nothing.  The other problem is when she/he would try anchoring the branch into the crotch they only achieved a couple of times knocking/pulling out a previous placement?  That's a losing bargin.

It does appear to me, an admitted non-expert, that this V isn't a good bunch of holding arms.

I am going to Trust the Eagles, even if they break my heart. This will be their first attempt at building a nest from the bottom up. Maybe they will decide to renovate N1 so that we can watch them raise a clutch. Talons crossed.

Here's the approximate location of the tree on top of The Bluffs that HM & HD have been hanging out in and messing around with sticks in general.   ;D

I don't know, I'll reserve judgement for now and just trust the eagles.  8)

I sure do hope that HM & HD go back to N1 and start messing around with their sticks back over there.

When I first started watching Decorah (2011) . Everyone said " Trust the Eagles'. I've not tried to figure out just what they're up to...wait and watch.
Thanks for all the info and all Puff, BL and Shep

BL those location photos are wonderful. Esp for us folks who've never been to Deocrah nests and the areas.

Thanks from me, too, for the maps and pics of top-down closeups of the Pond Bluff trees.
"Trust the Eagles" is great as a philosophy!

Catch the action on the rewind about 7-15 this morning -- HM brought a stick to the dead tree in the corner of the horse pasture near N1.  Not sure of tree name from last season, maybe part of T1.  She broke the stick into pieces and then it fell.  A squirrel wanted to see up close! Then HD joined her, flying from a colorful tree at the base of the Pond bluffs. She flew away, he stayed for a short time longer as the cam ops pan out to show us which tree.

That tree is spooky tree.

Not sure if you watch the cams from RRP's website or from Explore, but under RRP's website under the Decorah Cams right above video is this blurb....
Where did Mom and DM2 go? The two built a new nest out of camera range. But another pair of eagles have moved into the hatchery territory and are busy working on N1. Check the video list at the bottom of the page or subscribe to our blog to keep up with the latest news. For branch ID, follow this link.
If you click on that link on the page, you can find the name of the different trees, branches, etc with pics.

3.55 am  October 20
What a commotion!   Barking, yelping, at least one coyote howling.  Farm dog fight off a coyote?  We'll never know.

Earlier this afternoon, BE was perched W of farm in tree line, and it could have been HM or HD as they have perched here before.  BE left tree, headed across farm, and hatchery.

STLbf  That is Trout Creek flowing below N1 & N2B

Flowing West to East on this map.

It becomes Trout Run about 1,000 ft East of the Siewers Spring RD bridge.

I don't think I've ever seen it this low at this time of year.  :o

I mentioned the other day how dry Trout Creek is below the nests and by the River Bluffs.
I did some digging on the IEM weather website and came up with these precipitation amounts.
Image Below ..

No wonder Trout Creek above the confluence of Trout Run looks so dry.
Trout Run's flow is kept pretty constant because it is flowing out of Siewers Spring by the hatchery office.
