This narrative would hilarious if it weren't so serious.
I'm wondering if the 'fishy sardines' don't have a 'secret ingredient' that would garner the reply,
" Oh no! Not that!?"

Some morning color at Decorah, too.

And activity at N1!!

Oops, it's only squirrels.

I just can't believe that absolutely nothing .. no bugs, maggots, flies, spiders, mice, gerbils, Qualllabear, raccoons
or the very rare carnivorous driftless monkey have NOT eaten any of those fish in N1 yet !

I mean like no hungry migrating winged raptor even took just one for a Halloween treat?
What kind of fish were they, where did they come from and when were they put in N1 ?
And as George Carlin would ask more pointedly _ exactly how old where they when they where put in my sock drawer?   :)

Someone must have put in place one heck of a anti-climb Mammal apparatus at the base of the Nest One Cottonwood tree.   ;D  8)
Willard had a hand in it I suspect.   :-*

Alternate title to the 3 squirrels headed down the Y into N1. LOL
Hey Bushy _ comes from the back of the pack _ I dare you to eat one of those decorah sardines..
2nd in the brat pack says yeah go for it Bushy.
Bushy the fearless leader of the trio Cottonwood Expedition pauses at the crib rails _ nose twitching _ and says dead pan looking over his shoulder to the 2 bush league 2 behind him _ there's something fishy going on here.

'badum tssssh'  thanks I won't be here all night

BL - I noticed one of those squirrels sniff the fish yesterday, and move away.  I thought to myself...Ya, they stink, huh?

A few morning pics from Decorah - HD spotted below bluffs and had just finished eating a fish, HM on top of the bluff close to Trout Run Rd with a long branch, HD went scouting for a stick, and one of the Hatchery's on top of the tree close to bluff perch - looks like HM

Lisa, getting a good ID is difficult with HD and HM choosing to stay so far away from the camera closeups.  Nice pic of one on top of the bluff with the big stick.

I've always prided myself on eating the fair put in front of my hungry stomach from so many cultures and places on our marble.

Eaten some delicacies from around our world that would make a Himalayan Yak yak.
Some that would surprise the pallet ..   :)

Fish Jerky, by now, not eaten from inside or out by any living thing is a bit odd.

Eagles build nests .
This Eagle behavior is ingrained in their DNA and evolutionary history.

I say good for them _ HM & HD.   8)

It sort of brings it all neatly back around to Nest Zero, One eye Mom and Dad at the bluffs.   ;)

I will speculate no more on the nest relocation to the bluffs .

So many variables _ unless you ARE a American Bald Eagle only you will truly know.   :)

Lisa, that's a great shot of the Moon and Venus early this morning!  It was spectacular where I live, too, and the sky really clear.  Good time of year to review the planets and constellations that come into view for the winter months.  Lots of info online, such as this website -- https://earthsky.org

Thanks, STL  :)

I have found this site very helpful too with the Night Sky.  https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/night/

Two stories from RRP's FB page:

Raptor Resource Project

We have come to the conclusion that HD and HM are building a new nest elsewhere. We kept hoping that they would return to N1, but it doesn't seem likely at this point. Robin Brumm will be sharing her pictures and day trip to Decorah later this evening. Before then, we wanted to address the question that watchers have been asking since HD and HM began carrying sticks somewhere other than N1: Why? And the short answer: We don't know.

There have been some big changes around the N1 nest. It's possible that the loss of their roost tree played a role. As watchers might remember, the tree next to N1 fell during a storm in early June. While the nest itself wasn't damaged, the eagles' home tree also lost some large limbs.

Eagles are unpredictable. We worked at four sites this year and eagles are active in three of them.  HD and HM chose a nest tree last year that had cameras in it.  How lucky were we!! We don't know why HD and HM decided to move, but we wish them the best of luck in their new home and we'll do our best to keep everyone posted on what they are up to.

Thank you so much for watching, for sharing, for learning, for caring, and for your understanding. We'll miss watching HD and HM closely in the nest this coming season. If you'd like to watch bald eagles, Mr. North and DNF have been busy working on the North nest. This is a personal favorite of mine: the North nest is wonderful and the Valley of the Norths is a beautiful place: https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-north-nest/. Xcel Energy's Fort St. Vrain eagles have also been very busy working on their nest - a fun site to compare, since Colorado's flora and fauna are quite different than northeast Iowa's! https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/xcel-energy-cams/

11-4-23 Day Trip
Story and photos by Robin Brumm

The last few times I’ve been to Decorah, I haven’t had good luck getting any eagle pictures. I thought I would try again last Saturday, so I got up at dark ‘thirty and headed to Decorah. The last time I had gone to Decorah, I didn’t go down to N4 until late morning, and didn’t see Mom and DM2. I decided that this time, I would go to N4 first thing and hopefully would see them in the area. I got to Decorah and parked in the parking lot near the trail that leads to N4. I noticed that N4 was visible, behind a few branches from the spot where I parked. I didn’t see anybirdy in the nest, but it was still early in the day. As I got out of my car, I looked to the southeast and saw 3 big fires way off in the distance.  Most likely someone was burning leaves, or a controlled burn of some kind. I hoped that the smoke didn’t drift my way, or toward the eagles’ nests!

I grabbed all my stuff and headed down the trail. I got down the trail and saw one of the eagles perched in a tree that was a couple of trees to the right of N4. I believe it was DM2 that was perched there. I grabbed a few pictures and set up my lawn chair to wait for Mom to hopefully fly in. After a while, DM2 flew off, grabbed a stick and flew to the nest. Shortly after that, Mom flew into the nest! Yay! Both of them were in the nest together! It was fun to watch them moving sticks and getting in each other’s way, just like it used to be at N2B. I think I may have even seen some beakerson’s moments! Eventually, both Mom and DM2 flew off to the north. So I figured I’d go see what was going on at the hatchery. I packed up my stuff and off to the car I went!

I drove toward the hatchery, and definitely noticed that it was much hazier the closer I got. I have seen on the live camera feed, HD & HM taking sticks behind the bluffs. I thought I would stop at one of the pull off areas and look at the trees to see if I could see a new nest somewhere. I got out of my car, and the haze that I saw was definitely not fog, it was smoke! I could smell it the second I opened my door. I grabbed my binoculars and started scanning the trees. I was quite far from the trees, and It was so smoky that it was hard to see anything clearly. There were a couple of spots that looked like it could be a nest, but I couldn’t be sure. There were still some leaves on the trees that also made it difficult to tell if I was seeing a nest, or a bunch of leaves. Luckily, there was another person there that saw the parents fly into the new nest the day before, and was able to point it out to me. I was surprised by how big it looked already, since they hadn’t been building on it very long… Or maybe they have been building on it for longer than we’ve realized! I stayed for quite a while hoping the parents would come to the nest so I could get a picture, but I never saw them fly in. Surprisingly, when I got home and looked at my photos, I had one photo with a parent perched right by the nest! I might not have seen them fly in because I was distracted by several eagles including juvies, subadults and adults that kept soaring past in the sky.

After watching for several hours, I decided to head for home. I will definitely be going back soon so I can get better pictures of the new nest and hopefully pictures of HD and HM working on the nest. Does anyone have an “in” with Mother Nature, and could talk to her and tell her to make the weekends nice so I can go over to take pictures?  Lol

I did want to note that due to the distance I was from the nest, and the smoke/haze in the area, I had to crop and edit my nest photos quite a bit which reduces the quality of the photos.  Hopefully next time will be a clearer day!

We pretty much knew theyd built their own nest away from RRP nest trees.

If RRP has a drone, they can still get some pictures -
but I doubt they could stream from a drone.

There was a SA perched on a bare branch at the curve W of N1, when a RT hawk flew onto branch.  RT lunges at the SA a few times, before flying off, coming back and then SA flew out.
