TRR Sloth TV cam
In 2024, our work in animal protection and welfare presented us with significant challenges.
During this period, we took in 676 animals who arrived at our facilities due to various circumstances, including illegal pet trade, trauma, diseases, attacks by other species, and, alarmingly, a number of orphaned animals.

The death of Waylon a 3-finger sloth caused a huge uproar in the TRR chatroom.  :'(
The survival rate of these beautiful baby 3-Finger sloths is so low that it has become heartbreaking for those who follow the cam and donate.
I have cut & pasted TRR posts acknowledging the uproar about the passing of Waylon, and other 3-Finger sloths.

A quick PSA from TRR:
We want to remind everyone that sloths are not pets! Despite their seemingly cuddly nature, they are wild animals that do not belong in our homes. While their friendly demeanor might suggest otherwise, sloths thrive in their natural habitats, not in human environments.

Many people are unaware of this, and that’s where you, our Explore.org sloth fans, come in! We invite you to join our team of educators and help spread the word about the importance of keeping sloths in the wild—where they belong.

By sharing your knowledge and respecting others, we can work together to create a safer, more informed world for both Two-Fingered and Three-Fingered sloths. Let’s make a difference by ensuring these animals are protected in their natural habitat!

PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE FROM OUR ANIMAL CARE STAFF:

Toucan Rescue Ranch has always been incredibly thoughtful and meticulous about the animals we announce to the world. We implore you to understand that all animals you see at our center are rescues, usually from severe circumstances such as collisions, powerline electrocutions, animal attacks, and other traumas.

When you watch Sloth Preschool, you watch animals in a nursery hospital. All sloths are under 24/7 care. Many orphans we care for may have lung issues and underdeveloped organs; the list is exhaustive. All cases require a veterinarian and a detailed treatment plan based on their condition.

That said, we have always had a rule only to announce animals once we know they are stable. However, the difference between Explore.org and Sloth TV is that you get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at animals, sometimes in intensive care. So, sadly, due to this, we may experience an animal's death - even doing everything in our absolute power to save them. Sometimes, nature has another plan in store.

🕊️ In Memory Of
Waylon, 3F Sloth:
With a heavy heart we have to announce that sadly, Waylon has passed away due to his chronic illness. We will miss him a lot but we are sure that he is cheering on his fellow sloths on their path to being released.  :'( :'( :'(

From TRR Mod:
We deeply understand your sorrow over Waylon’s passing, and we share in the sadness of no longer having him with us.

Waylon was a true fighter from the moment he arrived at our clinic. He faced multiple challenges, including recurring pneumonia, fluctuating health conditions, and skin issues that caused him to lose fur. These complications affected his appetite, leading to slower and less consistent weight gain. Our veterinary team worked tirelessly, even hand-feeding him at times, to ensure his stability and give him the best chance at recovery.

Three-fingered sloths are known to be a delicate species to rehabilitate. During his necropsy, it became clear that his various underlying conditions ultimately led to heart failure. We always strive to be as transparent as possible about the conditions and challenges the animals face. However, despite our best efforts and care, sometimes nature has plans beyond our control.

At Toucan Rescue Ranch, we have spent 20 years rescuing, rehabilitating, and rewilding Costa Rica’s wildlife. To date, we have worked with over 200 sloths and currently provide round-the-clock care to more than 30 sloths of varying ages. We’ve expanded our efforts with additional staff and resources to ensure every one of these animals gets the second chance they deserve.

Decisions regarding euthanasia are never made lightly. They are the result of careful evaluation, thoughtful discussions, and immense consideration. It is always a last resort and never used to make space for new arrivals.

Waylon’s story reminds us of the fragility and resilience of the species we dedicate our lives to protecting, and his memory will continue to inspire our work.
