A Surprise, a Sad Loss, and an Optimistic Future - UPDATE January 27, 2024

Male fisher
The sudden surprise this morning as I was buried in writing was a dark motion and the male fisher’s face in the window. Click, click. The two pictures were seconds apart with very different looks.

However, the big thing on my mind is the chat room (pond chat) coming to an end—at least for now. I can’t help thinking of how good it’s been over the years and how many exciting video’s appeared in it that I snatched for updates.

But thinking optimistically, if we get back into den cams and radio collars with 17-year-old Lily and 15-year-old Jewel and their cubs and all the excitement and learning that could follow, we’ll be into bears year-round with all the friendships and chats that go with that. Working on it and crossing my fingers. There will be a farewell gathering on the pond chat tomorrow (Sunday) from 1 to 3 PM CT when you can share some of your favorite learnings and experiences gained from it over the years.

Thank you for all you do.

5:22 Warm and wet today. Grass starting to green up. Ice carving going on all over, but not as usual.  Late start again.  Can't seem to get to sleep before 1 am any more. Someone changed me into a night owl I guess.  Not sure I like it.  I like keeping up with things and TV late, but I don't like missing the start of day.
O h well, it is what is as they say.  Will try to check in with end of chat party today.  Then, at 4:30, I have to go to a mandatory volunteer orientation so I can learn to help out at the Berea Animal Shelter.  They want me to drive the dogs to various appointments in their van.  I am a good driver and like to drive.  Since I like to help animals too this should work out fine.  I have plenty of free time.

4:44 34 degrees and cloudy.  Need to go out of town again today to get my Trulicity.  People are using it to lose weight. So there is a shortage around here.  I need it to keep my A1C below 7.  It is very costly, but effective. I think my first monthly fill cost me over $1000, and insurance paid even more.  My last one was only $57, and medicare took the rest.  It is well worth the cost.  Just got a text the RX is ready for pickup.  So I will go get it before they sell it to someone else.

It was a very bittersweet day yesterday,  gently closing the door of our North American Bear Center Chat room at the end of my shift.   It was wonderful to see so many familiar people coming in  to say farewell.  I will forever treasure the last 14 years helping to educate people about the true nature of Black bears and all the incredible friendships I have made with some very special people and bears most especially our Ted and Honey, Tasha, Lucky and Holly.  I will be forever grateful to my cousin Maryann who emailed me the link to Lily's den cam in 2010,  I looked in the day Hope was born and the rest, as they say, is history.   Thanks to all my fellow Mods, it's been wonderful working with you over the years.  Thanks too to  Sharon, Scott, Spencer and all the Bear Educators and Interns who work so hard to give our ambassador bears a wonderful life and to continue the mission started by Dr. Lynn and Donna Rogers when they opened the NABC.  I am so happy to have played a small part in helping to make the NABC the state of the art facility it now is  Marge Reid

St. Mary's College ...  35:20    76°   (5:17 pm)  Lightly clouded and a nice day.  They said we'll have a nice week like this and then more rainy cooler days.  I guess we're all getting that kind of a mix.

I hope that all have been having the kind of day they wanted.

Cal  and Joho, can either of you tell me why they did away with the chat room?  I was not familiar with it, but it seems that if they had people that really enjoyed the place, it should have been left alone.

I belonged to a British/forum once that when it lost the place where it was located, we all moved to a new place.

6:25  Right on avg. YAY!
Darn went to teeth cleaning, now my teeth are hurting.  One is hurting a lot.  Need to go see him again today at 11:30.  Took extra tylenol, and four amoxicillan.  Will let you know later what he does.  X-rays all looked solid.  So it must be something the cleaner did to move tooth or loosen filling or something.
I do hope the bear people in charge.  Do take into account that even though we fell off on chatting we did not quit following the bear cams and supporting everything they asked us to donate for.  If it is money that is needed they should say so.  Pay the mods if that is what it takes. The ability to see and respond to chats from all over the world has value.  Especially when it comes to fund raising.
I think we can trace the gradual demise of bear chat to the MN DNR curtailing Doc's tracking program and wild bear den cam permits. I really miss seeing all the wildlife coming and going around that deep rock den.
Neva, the chat has for at least 15 years, been a daily presence in many of our lives.  I will miss it drastically.
Well GTG now. Got up extra early to get my dear little Nick to school on time. Had to drive 40 miles.  Now I am going to rest a little before I go see the dentist again.
