A Bit of Beauty and a Bit of Action - UPDATE January 12, 2023

Red-bellied woodpecker
Yesterday, the rather shy red-bellied woodpecker gave me a close-up view of his feathers and beautiful crown as he came for sunflower seed hearts and raw peanuts. He’s getting better at joining the competitive blue jays that are now back to around 20 again.

Goshawk   Goshawk   Goshawk
Goshawk   Goshawk
Today, in an unusual moment when somehow there were no blue jays, I was startled to see a big two-foot-tall juvenile goshawk looking at me from a branch in the middle of where the blue jays usually gather. As is common with birds of the far north, he seemed to accept a large mammal sitting quietly and non-threateningly. As I aimed and clicked the camera, a blue jay landed outside the window, making the goshawk leap into action and let me see how it looks to a blue jay as a big hawk comes fast with eyes focused on lunch. With the hawk close behind, the jay ducked to the side and the hawk flared to miss the window and stay in pursuit. I know the jay got away because a couple minutes later there was the hawk perched much closer than before. Looks can be deceiving. For a moment, he had his head cocked, looking like he would never hurt a thing. A moment later, he finished his show by launching into another chase. My last view of him was of his outstretched wings as he turned to begin another pursuit. He was the first goshawk I’d seen for years.

Another plus today was in Lorie Kennedy’s videos and Judy Thon’s reports of overnight activities here. They documented the first gray fox I’ve seen here in years. We’ll see if it keeps coming with the bobcat here a lot.

Thank you for all you do,

6:11  Winter is here again.  Little snow, but cold wind is blowing some.  It is 30 degrees, but feel much colder.  Good you got Neva's cams to be visible Cal.  They are interesting.  Even saw people on them this morning.  That seems different. Thanks again Neva.
Only Snowman shows people cleaning up bear damage etc. once in a while. Seeing turkeys and two shades of grey squirrels right now. Seems to be less black and more grey than last year.  Maybe color is swing back to grey. Those squirrels are sure mischievous.  Always chasing each other. All that action seems to make the turkeys uneasy and skittish.
One of my cams is in Long Lake NY where my niece Susie lives.  One cam shows a steel bridge, which Susie says they jump off of in the summer time.  This cam lets me know how her weather is in up state NY.  She does spend as much time as possible in Fl. in the winter. She likes to travel with her three dogs to many places for agility trials.
Almost lunch time for me.  So CUL EV1 GBU and GB Ukraine

  Van's bedroom ... 27:44     78°  (3:18 pm)   Sunny with a few thin, gauzy-looking clouds, and no wind.

Hello everyone.  I hope all is well for you.

Cal and Joho ...  that Goshawk that Dr. Rodgers photographed is gorgeous, isn't it?  The Cooper's Hawks that visit me only come by in hot weather here.  They love my big, stone birdbath... and the opportunity, they hope, for lunch and success with that is rare, 'cause the little birds scatter when the Hawks show up.

The daughter that rescues the horses, donkeys and mules, also rescues pregnant animals who were also headed for the Kill Pens.  She has then brought them to her mother's property to get some care and have the baby.  Eventually, a good forever home is then found for them.  Who does that?! ... sending a pregnant animal off to slaughter!  Or any of them?

The two newest horses that they have are Dutch Wagon horses, or something like that.  Usually that means putting weight on them and attending health issues, etc.  They sometimes get Draft horses and Draft Mules too  There are two cowboys that do some work and training around there too.  Matt is a regular cowboy/horse trainer, and Wallace is a Bull rider cowboy/trainer.

Gray Fox Excitement - UPDATE January 13, 2023

Gray fox
Heading home last night, I took one more look into the darkness for any movement. Just 10 feet away, the gray fox had his head deep in a hole that he was vigorously digging in the snow. Every few seconds he paused to look around, scanning every direction except toward the cabin before becoming vulnerable halfway into the hole. He hadn’t noticed me in the window. I wondered if I had time to go upstairs and grab the camera. When I got back downstairs, he was still at work. I quietly braced the camera against the window for an ID shot, but it was too dark for the camera to focus. Then he looked directly at me, perfectly still. There was enough detail in his face for the camera to focus, and he was still enough for a sharp picture despite the slow shutter speed, and the camera brightened it enough to be better than expected.

I hope he and the bobcat and the red fox all keep coming.

i read Russia’s Claim to Seize a Ukrainian Town Exposes Rifts Among Forces
After Russia’s Defense Ministry said its troops had taken Soledar, a leader of the Wagner mercenary group accused the military of stealing credit. Ukraine said its forces were still fighting there. so hoping countries that promised ukraine tanks and other stuff germany really sends what they said they would.

5:21! Very good time today. I do better when I wait until I wake up.  Went to mail bill for gas on foot.  Was very slippery all the way.  Both street and walk iced up.  My drive just a sheet of ice near door to about 8 ft. out from the door.  Used my cane and walked in the grass as much as possible.  Will have to go later to get new mail and paper.  Not sure when.  Roads here are icy , but not sloppy.  So I may drive to the mailbox.  There is only a trace of snow, so my car should be ok this time.  I will probably walk.
Made contact with a bear chat friend yesterday.  Her name is Iowa.  She and her husband Joseph have reserved a room in Ely for end of May.  We traded phones so we could text.  I am hoping to meet them in Ely if I can arrange it.
I will ask her to stop in here on Jewel.  She is a very nice person who helps the bears quite a bit.
I like to meet new people.  She is friends with Marge, Sk8, and the other bear mods.  I have not asked her yet if she is familiar with our Eagle and Falcon cams.  I think she is.
Now I have to get lunch started.  No bread yet so I don't know what is on the menu.  I took a mystery tupperware out of the freezer last night.  Might be chili.  Hard to tell when it is frozen.  If it is chili I will be glad, because I like my chili with French's Chili-o.  All I need with it are some soda crackers which I have.  Maybe I will heat up some green beans too.
I will drink ice water from the tap as usual.  Except at breakfast when I make a cup of coffee.
I will go cook now and CUL EV1.  GBU and GB Ukraine.

Bridge in Arles ...  26:27   73°  (1:19 pm)  Partly sunny, no wind.  Supposed to rain starting tonight and for the next three days ... maybe.

Hi everybody, I hope that your day is going well.

Hi Cal,  At that Great Dane place, they have two African Zebus that the daughter rescued.  The male named Elvis and a female - I forget her name, they have horns and do look like cows, sort of.  with a humped back.  They have other stalls and barn spaces that can't be seen on camera.

Hi Joho,  I hope you do get up to Ely, what a great experience that would be, especially if you get to meet some of your friends there.

Be careful walking back and forth to your mailbox.  It sounds like it is quite a distance,

Cal, the water that you see on that Cam is a small Pond, up by the main house.
