Ted’s Birthday plus a Nutty Breakfast with Seeds for Some - UPDATE January 17, 2023

Blue jays
It’s January 17, which means I can’t help remembering Sweet Ted. The picture here by Donna Andrews is from when he was 15 back in 2012. Ted relaxing - by D.Andrews 2012

I like this memory of him sitting calm and content in his chalet happy to have human contact and showing some of his calm, friendly personality that won him so many friends. We miss him.

Daytime action out the window the last few days has been birds coming for the nutty breakfast with seeds for some. Nighttime action has been Bob the Cat and the new gray fox that don’t get to have their pictures taken since they come in the middle of the night showing only as small blips on the security cameras. Last night, I left a drumstick and a piece of pork for Bob. This morning the drumstick was gone and the pork was still there. I left the pork for the crows and ravens and they ate the pork I was thawing for Bob. I put out a raw drumstick each night, which he almost always takes in the middle of the night, leaving me wishing he would let me see him by day like he used to.

5:39 Nice out 39 degrees and cloudy.  Will go get Boss at 8am.
He had a very nice visit yesterday.  Slept most of the day. He is a very laid back dog.  Likes to know what is going on around him, but not really worried about missing out.  He likes to bark at people out back doing yard things. He did this twice through the day.  I think just to let me know he sees someone.  It was nice out so we did walk to the mailbox.  He is pretty good on leash.  He heels well and only drifts ahead now and then when he forgets we are together, but he keeps a slack leash.  We took a nice car trip to Drugmart.  He does very well in the car.  I hardly know he is there.
At home though, he is easily alarmed.  He dropped his big dry bone in his kennel with the mettle pan bottom.  It clattered loudly and he came running out into the living room.  I will be surprised if he will go back in his kennel today.  His home kennel has a plastic tray bottom, and is quieter when he drops stuff.
He does a good job emptying his Kong which Debbie sends with him in his knapsack.  Deb puts carrots , treats, etc. inside.  Then she plugs the hole with peanut butter.  It is only a small hole, but he gets everything out with his tongue.  He does this on the carpeting, and I have not seen any traces of peanut butter left behind. I don't know how he does it so neatly.  He is a good house guest, and is welcome here any time.
I will go get my second cup of coffee now and get ready to go get him.

Boss is a great dog.  So powerful, but gentle. So talented.  Deb has taught him to do so many things on command.  He is just fun to be around.  Today I thought I would try to see if he would perform for me.  He did.  He sat up on his rear with front paws up.  He did not like doing this, and was kind of half hearted.  I think because it is his friend Abbie's trick.  Abby is Shannon's big dog.  Boss learned it by watching Abbie do it.  He also did one roll over for me after much coaxing and begging and rolling his eyes, but he did it. He sits, downs, and stays very well.  I do Stay and then hide his duck so he has to hunt for it in another room and behind stuff.  He loves to hunt and is very quick to find it.  He then brings it to my hand.  He is great. Well I will leave you all now. CUL EV1 GBU and GB Ukraine

   Joho -
Man on horse is Wallace, the Bull riding cowboy.  I don't know where he is from, originally.  I was watching that too.

Posting a little rememberance for our dear Ted.  I got the news from Lani in a post about the passing of our dear Ted on October 31st 2022 . Ted was a gentle giant loved by many.  He enjoyed lounging on the logs & taking dips in the pond as well as people watching... but most of all Ted loved snacking on grapes, strawberries and peanuts.  Ted was a special bear, dear to our hearts and is missed & loved by many.

Thank you so much Lani so much for sharing "Bear" news, photos & updates from Dr. Lynn Rogers and the North American Bear Center.  We appreciate all that you do... 💜  Now we wait to welcome  our baby Albatross to the world!  :-*

I just tried to post a long one, but it fell over the cliff I think.  Won't try to repeat it.  Too long.

The Red-bellied Woodpecker and a Wolf Surprise - UPDATE January 18, 2023

Wolf
Red-bellied woodpecker   Red-bellied woodpecker
Red-bellied woodpecker
Today, the red-bellied woodpecker landed with his eyes glued on the food below without a thought about how distinctive he looked with his beautiful red head and striking stripes. His looks are nothing to him. It’s how he’s looked most of his life. Nothing new. But he had no idea the excitement he adds to the daily wildlife shows out the window—remaining unconcerned when his short stint of acrobatics showed the bit of red on his belly that gives him his name. Each bird and animal makes its own contribution to the daily wildlife show out the window. But his opening act got topped today by a surprise encore—a wolf coming up the steps, seeing me in the window, and pausing with eyes wide open for a look to share. Never satisfied, I now want to see more of Bob Cat and the foxes to tide me over until bears come in spring.

Thank you for all you do,

Lily’s 16th Birthday - UPDATE January 19, 2023

Lily - 10-1-09
Lily lives on! Now 16, Lily is in a den with her yearlings Calla, Carex, and Coverly (2 females and a male) and is living peacefully, mostly unseen, with no trouble. In her 16 years, I believe Lily has meant more to more people than any bear in history. Lily and Hope 3-17-10
Lily and Hope 3-17-10
As an example of that, a Lily Fan today told me about watching and talking to Lily as Lily ate back in August of 2014. Lily was paying no attention to her. The Lily Fan then told Lily to be careful during the upcoming bear hunting season. That’s when Lily turned and looked at her. Looking into Lily’s eyes and seeing how Lily responded to what she just said, she began sobbing with Lily watching her—something the lady never forgot. As it has turned out so far, Lily WAS careful, and we still have her to this day as Lily spends the winter with her 16th, 17th, and 18th cubs.

The picture here from October 1, 2009 shows Lily’s thoughtful look with dirt on her nose as she was deciding to give up on the den that had too many boulders and move to an old den she had found that was made by another bear. That is where she decided to make her maternity bed and let the world see her give birth to Hope on January 22, 2010.

The picture from March 17 is of Lily and Hope nearly eight weeks later. By this time, Hope’s eyes had been fully open for nearly 2 weeks.

Hope 5-10-10
Hope 5-10-10

The May 10 picture is of Hope at 15 weeks and 3 days, growing well having been the lone recipient of Lily’s milk but not suckling enough to prevent ovulation. With conflicting hormones, Lily became torn between mothering and mating. Just eleven days later at 6:42 PM, Lily went off to find a mate. It was a time of trauma for her followers and researchers. People jumped in to help, including Lily Fans, the neighborhood, the St. Louis County rescue squad, and others. Lily and Hope 8-16-10
Lily and Hope 8-16-10
On May 26, neighbors found Hope and she was reunited with Lily in the biggest outpouring of wild animal emotion I’d ever seen. But as the next five days passed, it was evident that Lily was still torn. She left again on May 31 with Lily Fans again jumping in to help. Lily Fan specialists came up with a better cub formula than I’d ever heard of and Hope for the next 41 days grew well, supplementing her diet with wild foods. Then came relief. Lily and Hope crossed paths and reunited at 10-24 AM on July 11.

The picture from August 16 shows Lily back to full time mothering. She had resumed lactation, and Hope was suckling like old times. Lily was pregnant. In another five months she would be show the world many things about mixed age litters that were new to science while creating a host of memories for all of us. These two bears brought more people together for bears but also caused so much angst during the ups and downs that the story would have been almost unbelievable if we had not all followed the story every step of the way. So many memories.

Thinking back, I doubly say Thank You For All You Do.
