Spanky

Spanky has been showing us how bears chew off their foot pads this time of year. Today, Ted demonstrated the same technique in this 5½-minute video made by "Iowa" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u8erKACR_Q. Thank you, Ted, for doing that where we could see you.

Here is a 4-minute video of Spanky from today. https://youtu.be/6X8iC4XVpKQ

Thank you for all you do,

hey ev1,
the PA bears are moving around a lot.  Even left the den for a while today.  Got a great look at the two cubs playing with junk etc.
Hope you are OK silent cal.  May God be with you and yours as needed and bring you comfort no matter what.  It is said that it is his plan no matter what happens.  Hard for us to accept, but we are not in charge of everything.

Tasha took a stroll in this 7½-minute video by "Iowa." About 4 3/4 minutes into it Tasha practices her Ninja Warrior moves with a stick https://youtu.be/4MBKpsW5DGY

Back in the woods along a Bear Center nature trail, an eagle and ravens competed for a food prize. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=3701745526583055

Out the window at the WRI, a crow and a hairy woodpecker looked intense, and a red-breasted nuthatch glowed in the setting sun.

Today, the Lilypad Picnic Committee announced that the Lilypad picnic fundraiser will go virtual again this year. They will post more details on their website (lilypadpicnic.com) as well as on their Facebook page (Lilypad Picnic Fan Page - Sponsored by NBF). To inquire about donating a silent auction item, or for more information, you can contact the committee at [email protected]

Celebrating Spring - UPDATE March 20, 2021
20 March 2021

Spanky Destructo
Spanky Destructo

Spring officially started at 5:37 PM CDT, and that’s about the time that things started happening. Spanky finally decided to check out the microphone and then the camera as we watched worried that he’d go too far and destroy it. He mouthed the camera, tilted it down, and bit wires, making us worry about him getting a shock. We checked with Mauro. The camera is very low voltage and wouldn’t hurt him. Spanky then took a spring walk that has lasted over 3 hours. Spanky showed us the ultimate closeup as we held our breaths about what he was going to do to the camera. Here is a 5 minute video showing Spanky looking for trouble: https://youtu.be/k_491dLMxV0

Herring gull

Also today, three herring gulls, the first I’ve seen this year, came by and showed they were old familiar ones that I should be able to recognize. Donna noticed them first and said 3 gulls were circling over. I went out and put bologna on the feeder roof. One of the gulls immediately responded by descending and landing on their observation tree. Another landed on the WRI roof. The one on the tree soon flew down for its share with me standing nearby. Then another did the same—and the other. I’m not sure who they were, and I don’t have my notes handy. The eyeball of the first had no spots on the iris and could be ‘Clear.’ Another might be ‘Six O’clock,’ but to be sure I’d have to match up the red and dark spots on their lower bills. It was good to see that they remembered the WRI.

Then a woodchuck that I had not seen this year did the familiar by coming up on the second floor deck to the pan of broccoli, strawberries, and sweet potatoes. It selected broccoli. It further showed its familiarity by going directly to the sunflower seed spot and digging in. Could this be the male’s mate that is holding him here? Has she (?) been snug in a den all this time? She then went down to eat stubs of green grass that are appearing.Deer
Deer

Deer were eating the same thing where the snow has melted. Snow remains in shaded areas. Snow was melting fast at 55°F.

Common Redpoll
Common Redpoll
Other new arrivals were 3 common redpolls that came for sunflower seed hearts. One of them tilted his head to make sure I knew he was a redpoll.

An excellent beginning of spring. The only worry is that we had only about half the usual snow in January and February, which means only half the water in the soil to produce good berries. Maybe rain will make up for that.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies! What a morning we had. Robin's basement toilet tank needed it's guts replaced. Crow is no plumber but normally he has no problems replacing those parts. Except today. The thing leaked like a sieve! After 4 hours we left Robin's house with a non working toilet! Thank goodness she has another bathroom! Turned the water off to the toilet and said we'll try another day! Or we could call a plumber.

Cal, wish I could come help you out. You have so much to do for one person. Hope Polly can help you with some things.  I'm happy Boo is doing better.  Forgot to tell you that last Wednesday my sis and I saw about 15 turkey vultures in the trees at the Country Club! I don't know why they always pick those trees but they do. Those were the first I'd seen in awhile. Some of them had their wings unfolded. They looked like Count Dracula! :)

Jo, how's your weather looking? We are warming up this week! Hope Mother Nature isn't playing a trick on us!

Have a nice day! Stay safe! We get our second shot on Friday! Wahoo! :) :)

Wahoo for shots!  The nicest day ever today, and Arthur let me ride my bicycle along the trails near lake Erie.  Even out onto the pier.
Not gonna last I guess, but a lot of outdoor activity everywhere around here today. Moms and kids.  Almost everyone on their front stoops. I even saw a purple haired woman walking a three legged dog.  I gave her a big grin and a huge thumbs up.  She appeared to know why. Yes a very nice day to say the least.  No side effects for you I hope.

I solved the puzzle but couldn't figure out how to share times. I need to try on my main computer instead of this chromebook, some things don't play nice on here. Hope everyone is well. Hubby and I are getting our first doses of the vaccine this week and hoping for no side effects as I am recovering from skin cancer removal on my shoulder and I don't need both arms hurting. It was a beautiful day here and my newer Doberman snuck past my when I got home from the store and had a nice long run around our corner of houses. Completely stressed me out because she chases cars and we are still working on obedience. Thankfully no other people out with dogs at that time.

Take care all

Bear Center Action - UPDATE March 22, 2021

Ted
Ted

Ted showed that he knows how to remove foot pads just as well as Spanky does and that he can do it in color as is shown in this 4:22 video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wfk3m9rK8pA

Tasha solved a minor mystery yesterday, showing that she does the same thing to her foot pads, even though she is from Kentucky where there have been no reports of bears removing their foot pads. Thank you, Tasha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXRic8J35Yk

Holly in Tashas den
Holly in Tashas den
Yesterday afternoon, Tasha had a relaxed outing, not knowing she was about to have a hard night https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTFiO6ZkY6E Last evening, while she was away from her den, Holly emerged from the den that Tasha had dug last fall and had usurped from Tasha for the winter. Holly then checked out Tasha’s rock den and rearranged the bedding, while Tasha opted to spend the night in the white pine cub tree.

Lucky took his first walk outside his den today eating grass, looking around, and then sipping some water from his tub before going back to his snug bed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n0gS-C5kWQ Feeding may start on Friday.

Thank you for all you do.
