BTW I meant bicycle, but did not ride due to rain.  That Boss is such a sweetheart.  He was out back on chain to go, and little fluffball dog ran up and got right in his face and he did not care at all.  He is so stoic.  You would never know he had anesthesia and surgery.  He love belly rubs.  His eyes drift closed right away with just a few rubs.  He is very powerfully built, so very gentle and careful where he moves.  Had to laugh yesterday.  Debbie's two girls, Mary and Shannon, came to see him while he was outside.  He loves to scat vigorously.  If you know what I mean, and really blasted the whole back deck and the girls with dirt from the flower bed.  They were shocked and squealing. Very funny.  He really caught them by surprise.
He and Deb slept well through the night.  I was so glad to hear that.
Well here it is time for lunch already.  Not sure what yet.  Maybe some mediocre Great Value chili, a sandwich, and leftover coleslaw from fish dinner last night.
Nice, but cool today FYI

Hi Jewelies! It's been so nice outside I started cleaning up flower beds. My early daffodils and crocus are blooming now. The lilac and quince bushes are starting to bud. I noticed a robin built a nest in the holly tree. One good thing about cutting the cypress tree down is the robins won't work hard building their nest only to have it fall out when the wind blows! It happened every year. After a few days in the 70's we are back to normal temps in the low 60's. Like Dr Rogers said, it is still winter! Looking back at some pics on my iPad we had a couple snow storms in March, 2015. Nice update pics! The swans are beautiful! Thankfully they are making a comeback because of caring people.

Cal, glad that Booboo is feeling better now. My niece said she always felt crappy after her chemo. Blacklist was a nail biter! Why didn't Dembe shoot that torture doctor after he broke free?   We get our second shot March 26. Wish we had gotten the one you got! Monday the health dept called to schedule me for a shot on Wednesday. They were having a mass vaccine clinic vaccinating 1500! Told her we already had our first shot! She said good! Then a couple hours later someone else called to schedule Crow for a shot! Told her the same thing! She said she would make sure we were both off the list this time! Lol!

Jo, congrats on the new member of your family! Can't wait to see pics of Boss! My sis sent me this pic of Hattie yesterday...she likes belly rubs, too!

Have a great day! Stay safe and don't forget to set your clocks forward tonight!

That beautiful pup has about the same colors as Boss, but Boss is a pit bull with short hair. Very pretty puppy belly. Thanks for sharing.

Daily Updates
Spanky, Eagles, and Spot - UPDATE March 13, 2021
13 March 2021

Spanky
Spanky

On this spring-like day with the high temperature 17 degrees above average at 52°F, Spanky took a walk and was away from his den for some two hours. At this time 7:55 PM, he is back resting peacefully in his bed breathing steadily 7 times a minute with the regular pattern we see when bears sleep in summer—not with the long delays (7-18 seconds) between breaths we see in mid winter.

Spring starts in a week. As a sign of spring, daylight savings time starts tonight.

Another sign of spring is that bald eagles are back in numbers, and yesterday I got to see a pair in action like I’ve never seen before. Judy Thon and Carolyn Quick stopped by to tell me about the opportunity and drive me to the spot. They let me have the passenger seat for taking pictures. The eagles were a male and female eagle, which mate for life, and they were peacefully sharing a road-killed deer carcass.

In the picture of the two facing each other, the male is on the left and the female, about a third larger with a deeper beak (measured from top to bottom at the base), is on the right. As we approached, a vehicle was watching them close-up. When it drove on, we slowly drove to the spot and on past the eagles to where the sun would light them nicely. They paid little attention to the vehicle even though my window was down and my long lens was protruding out. They showed how peacefully a mated pair shares food and how they hook their upper and lower beaks into the meat to pull pieces loose. They were there for over an hour before we arrived and stayed another half hour or so as we watched them fill up. Finally, the male flew off and landed in a tree. The female joined him soon after. They made my day.Bald Eagle female taking off

Out my window, still another treat followed. Spot the mink stopped by and paused where the setting sun lit her face, making her look particularly beautiful. Thank you, Spot.

A good day.

Today, the Bear Center announced it will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM starting April 16, and will be open daily starting May first. Looking forward to it. I hope covid restrictions will be relaxed by then. On that note, Donna and I got our first shots earlier this month and will get our second shots before the month is over. From what I hear, no one in Ely has covid.

Thank you for all you do.

8:24 I thought it was a bear while doing it.  I got a nice surprise, but it took a while.  Nice day here.  Sorry to hear about flooding and blizzard all over the western half of US.  Especially in the barn with the unruly goat. LOL

Gone back in now.  She was so neat just trying to keep out of snow by tippy toeing over rocks and roosting on top of the big clean rocks.  She was even nibbling on twigs like a deer does.
Spring is closer today I feel it.  Soon will start to dry up.

Daily Updates
Tasha, Spanky, and the Woodchuck - UPDATE March 15, 2021
15 March 2021
 Print Email
Spanky

Tasha is showing her Kentucky genes that are telling her it is time to be up and around. With the weather and snow cooperating, she is up and at ‘em as is shown in this 11:16-minute action video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di3DMwFoNYY

Spanky is showing his male tendency to be among the first of the northeastern Minnesota bears to be up, helped this year by the unusually balmy March in which April-like temperatures are melting the snow early. Woodchuck MaleHe is still sleeping a lot, undoubtedly because it is early for even a male to be up, but he takes a stroll each day while mother bears are tied down with cubs and other females are naturally sedentary yet based on what I saw in the old radio-tracking studies in northeastern Minnesota. Here is a 3:04-minute video of Spanky entertaining himself in the den today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTrId0B7AswWoodchuck male id

Out the window, the male woodchuck (the only one I’ve seen) took advantage of this sunny, 46°F degree day and was out looking for grass to eat where the grass was snow-covered just a couple days ago.He also let me get a good ID picture of his face. From the dirt on his face, I’d say he’s been digging—in his usual burrow or maybe a new one. We’ll keep an eye out.

Thank you for all you do.
