Good morning everyone-  24 here and quiet- we had rain yesterday. i'm estimating about an inch. We took our rain gauge down a couple weeks ago. Now it will be colder but that's okay- more seasonal.

My friend and i walked with masks on yesterday. A couple times we let them dangle from an ear while we unfogged our glasses. sure got warm and moist under there. Hubby came home and said someone told him our local grocery store is closed. So i went on their facebook site and found that they posted that they needed to do some deep cleaning on monday. Now they are open 9- 6 instead of regular hours. They encourage all to call in order to pick up or if in town they deliver. I think they are having staffing shortage as they said they will be working with a smaller number of employees.  I really wonder about people who spread rumors and half truths. Why not check the facts first? Geez!

Not much happening here- i'm going to walk by myself today to make up for skipping spin classes.

Have a great day jewelies!

gm ev1,
Cal I do not do games and I have canceled my knee until it is safer. Probably next spring.  I will continue to hide out until I get immune.  Don't worry.
Nice to see more people and moderators on Pond Cam, because of Tasha.  What a bear.  I think the only action there will soon be just sleeping bears.
I wish I knew a way to identify those big white birds on the GSB Falcon Cam.  They could be geese, but they could also be swans.  I don't think they are egrets, because they swim a lot.  Egrets wade.
Keep puzzles comin thanks.
I am looking forward to getting out and about again.  Berlin Ohio and Ely Minnesota are high on my list.  Then upstate New York to see my niece Susie. Thinking about going to Nelsonville Military Museum today for Veterans day celebration, but don't know where it is yet.  So maybe not if too far.

The two pictures of the old beaver lodge across Woods Lake show the change that occurred overnight with six inches of snowfall. One picture was taken yesterday, the other today.

New beaver lodge on Woods Lake

Unlike this unoccupied lodge that is covered with snow, the new lodge where the beavers are spending this winter is snowless and stands out black a little way down the shore. Their winter food cache can be seen in the water (suddenly encased in ice) just outside the lodge.

Fisher
Fisher

Last night at 10 PM with snow beginning to fall, a fisher (Pekania pennanti) celebrated the return of winter with a visit to a downstairs window at the WRI. These weasels are a lot bigger than their cousin the American Pine Marten (Martes americana) that weighs only a couple pounds and lives up on the third floor. I believe this fisher is big enough to be a male that would weigh between 8 and 13 pounds and be 3 to 4 feet long. A lot of his length is his tail that gives him the species name pennant. His name fisher has nothing to do with fishing. They don?t even eat fish.

Short-tailed weasel

Today, a treat was seeing a short-tailed weasel (Mustela erminea), a.k.a., a stoat or an ermine. It disappeared under the first floor deck. I haven?t seen one of these little weasels here for years, so I cranked open a window and made a soft, high whistle. This predator of small mammals immediately appeared from under a step and listened and looked in all directions. It never looked up where the camera was clicking, though. Then I saw something I would not have predicted. A red squirrel weighing about three quarters of a pound came close, and the ?-pound weasel ran for the woods with the squirrel a couple feet behind.

Back in 2007, one of these weasels gave birth in the garage. On May 29, she carried her 7 babies one by one down the hill to the shore of Woods Lake. There, a rocky area with many crevices provided them with protection. They live 4 to 6 years in the wild, so it could have been the same mother that I saw carry a single baby in her mouth from the garage to the rocky area on May 19, 2011.

We are still monitoring Lily with a trail cam.

On this Veteran?s Day, we want to recognize and honor the many who helped protect our freedom in America by serving in the military.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 30 here and clear; izzy looking out the east window; i wonder what she sees?

johoward- glad you postponed your surgery.  I just checked our state website. It's pretty complicated for me to find stuff but the percentage of hospital beds available per region is very telling. The region i am in only has 16% of its beds available. That is just scary. Hubby and i agreed it's best to not get sick- with anything.  Your region may not be in that situation but i'm glad you made the decision you did.

Sil's birthday is saturday and we talked yesterday- no celebration like all our birthdays since ykw. I told hubby i'd get her a cupcake from Best of Iowa. Go visit her outside like we did on mine. No Thanksgiving celebrations here either. Hubby said he'd be happy with hot dogs!!  I aim to please. lol  Cooking a turkey for just us is not high on my list though i like left overs. I'm going to talk to the folks at 2nd Street Sweets and see if they have any plans.

Going to walk this morning with my friend. I went in yesterday at a very early time . There were 4 people walking on the track- none of whom had masks on.  Just amazing. Neither did they wear masks downstairs and leaving the building. I opted to walk on a treadmill that kept me at a distance from everyone.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! My state is out of control! Ykw cases have skyrocketed! My county is number one in the state to have the most cases overnight! Schools have been closed all week. My sis and I tested negative. But as they remind us that only means on the day of the test we were negative. Governor wants everyone to test regularly. So there are testing sites everywhere. He hopes all the testing will find where the people who are asymptomatic are and get them quarantined.  I hope his plan works.

Cal, don't forget Blacklist is on Friday evening! I am so ready for new episodes from all the shows I watch. I'm sick of reruns! Great update pics! I love the looks of that white weasel! I wish everyone could get along, too, people and wildlife! Hope Polly is ok.

Lupe, Crow had a dr appointment the other day. One of the nurses told him she didn't believe wearing a mask was necessary! I can't believe some one in the medical field would say something like that!  Well, summer came to an end again! We broke records all week long. Tuesday got up to 81! After almost 2 inches of rain yesterday, the temps dropped. Now we are back to normal. It was good while it lasted!

Jo, I'm not much of a game player either. Especially ones that involve other people. I don't like to compete with others. I prefer to play by myself! I've always been that way. Guess that's why I never got involved in sports. But I can't go a day without playing solitaire on my iPad! Lol! I think you made the right decision to postpone your knee surgery!

Ra, did you get much rain this time around? Hope not!

Have a great evening and stay safe! :)

Good morning everyone- 19 here and it looks clear- not light out quite yet.

rues- so alarming hearing someone in the health field say that masks weren't necessary. Wow. I continue to be amazed at the lack of mask wearing around here. There is a group of people cleaning out bil's house in preparation for realtor showing it. Hubby has been doing the garage luckily mostly by himself! All of the people who have come to work there do not wear masks. So hubby has been staying away. Yesterday i noticed a neighbor came to visit hubby- saw him outside. He already had ykw and says he is immune. Amazing what people believe about a pathogen that is so new even the experts aren't sure.

rues- thank you so much for your comment about the validity of the test meaning that you were negative only on the day of the test.  From the very beginning of ykw i couldn't understand the long lines of people  without symptoms or close contact with someone who tested positive.  I think these people who got a negative continued to behave normally instead of just staying at home as much as possible.  They could have been in the incubation period where a test is useless.  Oh well!!

Our governor had a press conference yesterday and i was disappointed . We need  better mitigation practices. So many lives lost. We had 30 deaths in our state yesterday.

Iowa plays football tonight- that's a first. Hubby usually watches gold rush but we'll watch football instead.

I love my games too but only compete against me-

Have a great day jewelies!
