June and Lily nose to nose, with Cal and Bud - May 18, 2007

Many memories cross my mind as I think of all that should go into the book and as I work toward having another den cam with Lily this winter. The best research and education of my career was based on trust. With trust, we could see and share more about black bear life in the wild than had ever been possible. The trust that let June and her cubs ignore the researcher and go about their lives in this picture from May 18, 2007 is an example. Here, 6-year-old June is opening an ant log for Lily, Cal, and Bud a month and 2 days after they left their den. Lily is the dominant cub crowding her light face in closest to June, watching intently for ant larvae and pupae to appear, knowing that her mother would give way and let her and her siblings have these nutrients they could not have gotten on their own.

For this view and many like it, I am grateful to the bears and everyone who made this research possible.

Thank you for all you have done. I?m hoping that this winter will be a time of learning still more from Lily who, at 14, is in her peak reproductive years.

Good morning everyone- 28 here with spitty and newguy already meowing at me to get fed. Trying to get izzy pill done too.  Yesterday began with breakfast pizza. We noticed the clerk had a mask on again. Seemed like the last couple months he didn't have one. Plexiglass divider between us and him and we've always had a mask on. We just did a short ride. It was super windy and the temp not cold- 30's- but it sure didn't feel nice.

Saturday i went to Best of Iowa to get a cupcake for my sil's birthday. A turtle cupcake.  I found some notecards that were  just beautiful- made by an artist in Coralville. Plus their kitchen had some frozen casseroles for sale. I got 2- a chicken and a Mexican one. We've tried one and though it was yummy it did have ingredients that i'm trying to avoid. I also made split pea soup for hubby yesterday.

cal- i didn't get to watch the Steeler game- they showed Broncos- Raiders game. I saw a bit about Hawkeye basketball yesterday.  Looking forward to that.

Have a great day jewelies!

hi lupe it was super windy here yesterday gust were 45 mph and gusty all day long from the NW i had a hard time opening the barn door i googled turtle cupcakes did they look like this

i asked jim before he left about seeing cindys mom and them he did not she called and said her furnace not working at all and its new too jim put it in and an ac few months back. he asked her if it was turned on she said yes so he called ca told him go over there and see if it is even on. ca got there but her nephew went over and it was not even turned on. he turned it on and works great. so maybe cindy needs to write a deal on how to turn it on or ca can keep going over his mil. jims dad already said he did not want to do christmas this year cause of ykw. this will be bad for his older sister cathy she loves christmas like ca but she loves her dad more. his dad brother was going to fly in from VA but cancelled that. i am so sick of ykw arent we all. hope everyone will be here for the next one.

Hi Jewelies!  Nice day here.  Just got home from the dentist... no cavities... Yay!

cal... Very nice!!  Did you know that if you tap on the thing hanging from the ceiling, you can wake up all the pets?  lol I chose the same thing above the fireplace.   :)  Is there a ornament smashing game this year?  I haven't found it.  I've been playing the game that is next to the chair... not very good at it though.  lol

Have a good day, Jewelies!

Good morning everyone- i'm up super early on this tuesday. Supposed to be a nice day too.

Well- our governor held a press conference at 6 PM last night. She's never done that so i was pretty sure we would have more "public health orders." Mandates include masks indoors in public if you are to be in there 15 minutes or more.  Limit 15 people for indoor gatherings and limit of 30 for outdoor gatherings.  Restaurants and bars limit hours to 6 AM to 10 PM. All organized youth and adult sports activities of any size are suspended. Exceptions high school, collegiate and pro sports continue with limits on spectators. Elective inpatient procedures in hospitals reduced by 50 %.  In force until Dec. 10 th.  No fitness classes either at gyms. Forgot that one.  She didn't mention that on air but it was in the press release.   She stated Iowans were becoming complacent and that is why we had the 4th highest infection rate in the country.
Some say- too little too late. I prefer to be a little more optimistic- a little more.

Stay safe my jewelies and have a great day!
