Well, shoot.  Hope the Chiefs get themselves together and win on Thursday.  I know it's hard to play on Sunday and turn around and play in 4 days.  Hope Sammy is ok.  Bills have been doing lately...  Youngest grand and her boyfriend brought me some chicken from the Steakhouse.  They stayed quite awhile and chatted.  I showed him all my Halloween costume pics.  So fun!!  lol

Daily Updates
Bear News from Sharon Herrell - - UPDATE October 11, 2020
11 October 2020
 Print Email
This week's news includes possible hibernation den for Tasha and Lucky's leaves.

I'd first like to thank Ted's human mom for giving me permission to use Ted's wagon picture. I forgot to attach the picture to go with the story last week. Thank you, Cindy for sharing it.

Ted
Ted
Ted had a good adventure on his way to the viewing area. He sat for a while behind Tasha's den munching on mouthfuls of grass. We plant rye and white clover for the bears to enjoy. He is moving slowly but he gets to where he wants to be. He made his way to the viewing area, was weighed and enjoyed a few treats spread out for him. He didn't swim but did walk to his old den and sat by first the man gate and then the second man gate. I went in and walked with him back to his retirement den. Dr. Rogers reported Ted weighed 677 pounds, in his daily update; he is right on track for hibernation.

As the wind brings in the first signs of cooler temperatures, the trees in cooperation have started shedding their leaves. Many have fallen into Lucky's den. He's moving slowly but his need to rake in more bedding surpasses his rest time. The staff has also helped him by raking, bagging and dumping the abundance of leaves near his den.

This week while Tasha ate her dinner and interns watched Holly for movement; Spencer and I went into the enclosure to look for possible signs of digging. We found no new sites but did notice the tree that blocked the former dug den had been moved. We checked it out and it not only had fresh signs of digging but is large enough for our Tasha. She has also been playing in the overflow stream. Is she playing with slimy critters or searching for something else? She continues to get a meal a day plus treats, she now weighs 365 pounds.

Lucky

Tasha

Holly has not been out of her den for weeks. She will occasionally poke her head out long enough for us to snap a quick picture but doesn't come out. She must be nice and cozy enjoying the den Tasha made for her. It?s typical though, Lucky always put the straw in all the right areas and even made his little nesting area. Holly would then take it over. We have seen that happen many times in the past. I think it's her way of saying," I'm the boss", thank you.

The season is quickly coming to an end in a couple more weeks. The bears will get more straw, feedings will be one time a day and then the bears will say, "See you next year."

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bear Keeper

Good morning everyone- I really slept in today; heard rain in the night and it lulled me back to sleep- looks wet out and the wind is howling.  Izzy must have been sitting on the floor by the bed. When i sat up- 2 hours after her breakfast time- she gently meowed. Pretty sure the translation is- It's about time you got up!"  She is just amazing- doesn't wake us up.

Tennis was sort of a bummer yesterday- Novak never got started until too late and Rafa was just on fire. I love watching him- love watching left handed players. The Steelers won- yay- they still have one game to make up from last week.

I called my walking friend and set up our normal time for today. We have lots to catch up on.

going to the big grocery store and to orscheln's. Need cat food

Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- yesterday was a day of getting back to normal after 2 weeks of tennis. So good to see my walking friend again. We had lots to catch up on. Her hubby had an adventure in the field trying to harvest. Their combine caught on fire- no one hurt and the field didn't burn. Their neighbor drove by and he saw right away the problem- went home and got their water wagon and went back and soaked the beans around the burning combine before the fire truck got there.  They have just 80 acres left to do and hopefully can find someone to finish for them.  Combine wasn't a brand new one but is a total loss.

Our bees are gone- hauled back to Michigan. The guys were there on Saturday at noon collecting the honey. Hubby and i were just saying that we noticed more at the house lately. I said it was probably because the flowers in the field were done and we still had flowers at the house.  Anyhow they spun the honey done at our neighbors house and the bees followed the honey there. Apparently the bees are smart enough to go steal the honey rather than make it.  Cool!  Then they waited until after dark to  move them to make sure all the bees were back to the hives. So glad no one was left behind.  Our neighbor said they got 30 pounds of honey and will bring us a jar. Bet it is good stuff.

cal- we didn't get much rain either. Our grass isn't growing much and after today it's supposed to get much cooler, Okay by me.
I finally figured out hw to post picture of our rig driving home.

Have a great day jewelies!

hi lupe sorry the combine was a total lost but could of been so much worse! quite the rig there. so hubby doing driveshaft you did not have to sit in jimmy and steer all the way home right? that would be nerve racking! for both of you. bees not really stealing people stole from them. why were they here and now going back to michigan. where will they be back there for the winter. up to 80 today and tomorrow then cooler temp possible freeze friday morning. now you know how to post a picture post one of izzy! :) local news saying chiefs will play monday at 4pm it changes all the time but at least for now still playing football. jimmy looks like he is in pretty good shape.

Hi Jewelies! Kinda warm today for the middle of October.  Only 2 more days before bears will be safe for another year.

cal... I was looking at the Chiefs schedule and it says they play the Bills on Monday the 19th.  I was wondering because I knew you said they were playing them on Thursday, but the Bills are playing TN tonight.  The schedules are all screwed up this season!  Our high school game was cancelled last week because the other team had ykw, so we have our next game here on Friday... hopefully.  lol

lupine... That combine on fire could have really been a catastrophe if the field had caught on fire!  Glad the neighbor was able to help.  I saw on the news yesterday about how Iowa farmers help each other out, so I'm pretty sure the neighbors will help him harvest his crop.

I finished one of my cross stitch projects today... on to the next, just have to add some beads and I'll be done with that one, too.

Have a good night, Jewelies!  Hi to all!

Daily Updates
Changes - UPDATE October 13, 2020
13 October 2020
 Print Email
Much has changed in the last few days?especially the color. A beautiful golden yellow aspen has lost most of its leaves since the 10th. I tried to match the two pictures, but the branches angle upward more now without their leaves. The overlook shows that its the same everywhere.

The last of the red is still hanging on the branches of the scarce oaks. Seeing those leaves reminds me of a time back about 1990 when bears were showing me the importance of oaks to their reproduction, especially in years of berry crop failures. Females that knew their way to oak stands 20-40 miles outside their territories had the best reproductive success despite spending so much energy on the trip. Northern Red Oak leaf

I wanted to know more about the oaks and was fortunate in being able to follow my whims. An odd sentence in my job description (http://bearstudy.org/website/images/stories/Documents/Lynn_Rogers_more_info.pdf) said ?Supervision is characterized by a degree of confidence in and reliance on the researcher's productivity, competence, and judgment that there is an unusual level of support of his recommendations and his most novel and as yet seemingly fruitless investigations." Another sentence was nicer, saying ?The supervisory relationship fully reflects recognition of the incumbent as a top technical authority in his field in the agency and as a distinguished and brilliant scientist." It took hard work to try to live up to that one. But on that fall day, I was able to schedule a U. S. Forest Service airplane to fly far and wide searching the ground for patches of red to map. Some patches were scattered trees. A five acre stand that the bears had shown me stood out strong. Deer grazing
Deer grazes
Then there was a mile-long stand on the south side of a narrow ridge?by far the biggest oak stand in my survey. A few days later, I walked it. I recorded bear sign and deer sign and was impressed with the number of ruffed grouse. I recorded every sign of wildlife I saw, including squirrels. I wanted the stand protected. Too many of these scarce but important trees were being cut for firewood. Hoping that someone in power would join my effort, I turned the data over to the DNR and The Nature Conservancy. The Conservancy went into action. It raised a huge amount of money and protected the oaks by buying the oak and the surrounding Palisade Valley and having it added to Tetegouche State Park. I have great respect for The Nature Conservancy to this day. A good memory.

Out the window today, a brave (or very hungry) male red-breasted nuthatch won a prize in my mind. It repeatedly landed on the railing, cautiously approached a squirrel that had control of a pile of sunflower seed hearts, darted in to grab one, and flew off. I grabbed the camera and caught his next venture as the red squirrel looked on.

Also out that window, the head of an ancient dragon has appeared. It is sticking out its tongue and has the loose skin on the throat that some lizards have. I can?t identify the dragon, but the birds and squirrels are acting like it is not even there.

Woody Dragon

In the yard, it?s deer now, not bears?at least by day. Ignoring leaves that cover the forest floor, the deer are coming to the biggest, best grassy spot I know, and it?s right outside the kitchen window. This deer could see me in the window but completely ignored me. Sometimes that feels good.

These events spiced up my day as I mostly sat at the computer.

Thank you for all you do.
