Good morning everyone- 58 here with some clouds. I just checked the radar and hope that some of the rain in the area will get to here. Prediction is 20 to 30% chance. Not much. Yesterday was beautiful- i sat on the back porch until it started to get cool- at 5:30. With all our trees the porch was in shade and it cooled down pretty fast.

Raining in Ely- Ted in his chalet. Izzy was funny yesterday trying to find a warm spot to snooze. Lots of lap time when i was in the house. She sleeps on top of my dresser at night- it is high up and she can see outside to the back porch. She sleeps on Duke's blanket i had folded up there. So glad his blanket is still in use.
Today begins the US Open tennis tournament in New York. They tested new protocols last week to try to ensure safe conditions for all. I read they had a player test positive yesterday- contact tracing and quarantine in place.

My posts may be erratic in the next 2 weeks. TV coverage goes from 11 AM to 11 PM so my sleep patterns will probably be different.  I just hate to miss anything.

Have a great day jewelies!

Shadow
Shadow
As we see hunters surrounding this area with baits, it is hard to think of the bears we are seeing and have known for so many years being killed or wounded by hunters who have no knowledge of the long histories of these bears and their individual personalities. The difference in thinking is in hunters viewing bears as a population and us thinking of these particular bears as valued individuals who each has his or her own value to science and education. Each is an individual we have come to know. These include bears up to 33 years of age. In this long term study, each successive year makes the whole that much more valuable. Bears are long lived individuals, each with his or her own personality. As Jane Goodall wrote: ?Long term research in which individuals are known allows one to ask questions that are not possible in short term or ecological studies.? In this study, we continue to observe new behaviors, each of which is put into the context of the individual and its history. Each individual that is killed ends a history. Each year, we cross our fingers that key bears will make it through another year. Hunting starts tomorrow morning?September 1. The picture is of Shadow, the second oldest black bear on record and counting at 33.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- cool and cloudy here but no rain yet. Looks like it's south of me. It misted yesterday but nothing serious. cal- i agree with you- i didn't read update either.  Too much bad stuff going on in the world.

Tennis was good yesterday. Of the 29 Americans who played 15 won their matches. Coco Gauff lost her match but did show her fighting spirit. Venus and Serena both play today. 23 Americans have matches today starting at 10 AM and finishing at 11 PM.  Long and interesting day. I heard the tournament director speak yesterday- she explained the new Covid protocols to try to keep everyone safe. Multiple tests and she said that they expect to get positives with as many people as there are.  Masks and social distancing are required.  Lots of thought went into putting this tournament on. I don't miss the fans at all . Of course the financial problems and the jobs lost without them is a concern. Last year they had 750,000 fans during the 2 weeks. Wow.

Time for breakfast here-- have a great day jewelies!

Zelda with dirt on her head
Zelda with dirt on her head
On this first day of bear hunting season, Zelda showed up with dirt on her head. Had she been digging a den? Very possible. We haven?t seen Shadow for a couple weeks or so. She had been known to den in the last week of August. Zelda is pretty chubby, so she very well may be ready to call it a year. We?ll see how long she keeps coming.

Bear with Pine Siskin - K. Burns
Bear with Pine Siskin - K. Burns
The bear with a pine siskin is a picture that Kristy Burns took on July 28, 2019, when she was here for a bear course. How does a bear react when a bird lands on it? Kristy caught one example. I have seen a bear run when a butterfly landed on its back. So anything could happen, I guess.

We?re crossing our fingers for the bears in this tense time.

Thank you for all you do, and thank you for the donations you have made for bear food to help keep them safe.

Bears and Birds - UPDATE September 2, 2020

Rosemary
Rosemary
As we humans sat feeling tension due to the season, little Rosemary seemed to be doing the same, having retreated up a white pine to just sit.

Tension was also in the air for a fledgling male pileated woodpecker. Sharp-shinned hawks are coming through, and one that made many passes at blue jays and this young woodpecker was perched high in a tree sitting very still as if looking for movement. The pileated had voiced loud calls of distress while being chased but then tried a different strategy. With the hawk sitting high above, the woodpecker sat low and quiet and still on the shaded side of a white pine. He had been chased enough. Then the hawk broke the suspense when it saw a blue jay, tried for it, missed, and flew far off. The woodpecker and blue jays returned to normal.

A new bird made an appearance at the feeder yesterday and today. We had never seen one here in 25 years of recording (since 1995). It was a male scarlet tanager, this one in fall yellowish plumage, and he was nice enough to sit next to a male goldfinch to show their difference in size. I hope it comes back in red plumage next year.

Good morning everyone- just a quick check in- much tennis. Some surprise wins for Americans  Madison Brengle, Taylor Fritz, Jessica Pegula Ann Li, Shelby Rogers.  Today Sofia Kenin, Serena, Katrina Scott, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys Katie McNally, Francis Tiafoe, Sasha Vickery, JJ Wolf and Bernadette Pera.

The field is getting smaller every day. But the matches still stretch out over 12 hours.  Tv starts at 11 AM and i follow live scores on the laptop.

Cool, sunny morning here. We had a half inch of rain on Tuesday evening- wow.

I really liked the cat shame today- lol.
Time to get a move on--have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies. A terrible sadness in our house this week and then an unexpected little happiness, too. Monday our Boo passed away. Robin and I were with him. He was 15 and half yrs old. Our vet said we must have done something right for him to live 5 years past the breed norm. We are all devastated. We are still grieving Molly and now Boo. The house is so quiet. Been a long time since we haven't had a dog barking in this house. Then yesterday we found an abandoned kitten in Robin's backyard. Poor thing was filthy dirty and covered in flies. At first we thought she was injured since the flies were all over her. We found no injuries but she was covered with something. We didn't know what it was. We first called the Humane Society to see if we could bring her in. They told us because of ykw they weren't accepting young kittens! What do we do with her? Their answer was leave her outside and maybe mom will come get her. No we weren't doing that. That kitten had been meowing for over 5 hours before we brought her in. So we took her to our vet ofc who told us she was covered in maggot eggs! Gross! Vet tech checked her out and said she was only a few days old and looked otherwise healthy. Told us to use a flea comb to clean the eggs off of her and then bathe her. She would need to be bottle fed. Robin had bottle fed Wilson so she knew the routine. The tech told us to bring her back in a couple weeks. Robin took her to work today to everyone in the office's delight! She has a long holiday weekend off so she will spend all of that time with the so far unnamed kitten. If Tela doesn't accept the kitten, Robin says she will find the kitten a good home.

Hi Jewelies!

rues... So sad to hear you lost your Boo.  I'm sorry.   :'(  I hope Robin can raise that poor little kitten.   Makes you wonder why its mother left it...

cal... How's your hand and arm today?  Hope it's better.  Lots on the news about Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther.  He was from a city not far from here... just the other side of Clemson.  When is the first game for the Chiefs?  I'm getting excited to see some football again... hope all the teams get to play.  I saw a license plate yesterday with the letters KSU and thought about you and your Wildcats.   ;)

lupine... Sounds like you're finally getting to watch your tennis... a lot!  lol

Hi to all.  Sleep well, Jewelies!

Scarlet Tanager in fall plumage
Scarlet Tanager in fall plumage
We don?t believe any bears were taken near here today. We?re crossing our fingers for tomorrow, taking things day by day.

A small highlight today was seeing the scarlet tanager again. Although it was at the sunflower seed heart pile, a close-up photo showed that it was actually eating a moth, which is more what they are known to eat?more so than seeds.

We?ll rest easier tonight.

Thank you for helping the bears with your donations for food.

Thank you for all you do.
