Cal, we are supposed to get rain from hurricane Laura Friday and Saturday. What a mess down south from Laura and now the fire from the plant. So many horrible things happening in our country. Glad you got your flu shot! Crow tried to get his at Sam's on Tuesday morning  but because he doesn't carry his Medicare card, only his insurance card, they refused to give it to him! I told him to go to our drs ofc. I plan on getting mine there at my Oct checkup. The tree trimmers came yesterday and trimmed that neighbor's darn tree off Robin's house and property. The tree now looks like a one sided tree! Now the grass in her driveway will get sunlight and hopefully regrow. The trimmer guy said the neighbor's roof is in BAD shape. He said with the tree limbs laying on top the roof there has to be water damage inside the house. Not once did the neighbor come outside to see what was going on! It was so noisy with the guy sawing and the chipper running. They had to have heard it. Hope Pearl's trimming went well!

Lupe, bet Cal is right...raccoonie stole the package! Lol! I used cream cheese to hide Molly's meds. After awhile she figured that out. So I started sticking the pills in a cut up hotdog! Now Boo he has no problem with meds. He'll eat anything you offer him! I can't believe that leaves are already falling! My apple tree  and lilacs are dropping leaves like crazy. The dogwoods are turning red. The cicadas and the starlings are already making their noise. I did say I couldn't wait for fall! Didn't expect it this quickly! Hope hubby feels better soon! Love hearing about Izzy!

Jo, good to see you posting!

Have a nice evening! Stay safe! :)

HI Jewelies !  Hot, hot today and oh, so humid!  Had to work tonight and when I walked outside, it was like walking into an oven!  I got my deer crossing signs!!  Yay!  Makes me feel good when somebody actually listens when you bring something like this to their attention.

rues... I hope your river doesn't flood this weekend.  We might get some bad weather Saturday afternoon from Laura.  Glad to hear that tree at Robin's house is finally taken care of!

cal... Your hand and arm sound so painful!   Hope Pearl's appointment with Joe went well this time.  One of your snake friends was right next to my front porch this afternoon.  My youngest grand was here and when she saw it, she screamed and it took off. lol

lupine... Have you ever heard of Pets Megastore?   That's where I get revolution for my cats.  It's in Australia and takes a little extra time, but prices are worth it.

Hope everyone has had a good day and a good one tomorrow, too!  Hi to all!

When Mom?s Away, the Cubs Will Play - UPDATE August 27, 2020
27 August 2020
 Print Email
Colleen's 2 cubs
Colleen's 2 cubs
With no mom in sight, the 4 cubs of 17-year-old Colleen and 3-year-old Ohio (daughters of Donna and RC, both still living at 20 and 21) got together in the tub on this 75?F day. When they left, they all stayed together as budding play partners.

Colleens cub
Colleens cub
These cubs are growing well, and those of Cinnamon and non-clan Kimani are, too, now that they have found food here in this year of bleak bear food in the forest. Kimani has produced 2 or 3 cubs in previous years. We suspect that she has already lost a cub or two to be down to only one now. The DNR says that mothers with cubs are likely to get hit hardest by the lack of food and by their vulnerability to hunters? baits. That is our prediction, too. For the families we know, we are hoping for the best.

In years like this, we doubly wish the DNR would start the hunting season after Labor Day for the safety of vacationers and for the safety of pregnant, early-denning mothers-to-be, considering that Minnesota?s bear population is only about half what is was at the beginning of this century.

Our friends at the Northwoods Bear Foundation are hosting an online auction to benefit the North American Bear Center. All the details are on their Facebook page

Good morning everyone- 70 here with windows open for at least a little bit. Rain and maybe severe storms this afternoon then the hot weather goes away.  We tried to sit outside late yesterday and it was just too hot.  Has been 90's all week.

I checked Ted earlier and he was sleeping on his back in his chalet. What a guy- it would have been interesting to see how he maneuvered himself to get in that position. Wonder if he snores? wish there was a microphone on his cam.

Our governor closed bars in six counties in Iowa, Yesterday we had 1349 new cases of ykw and 17 deaths. That is the highest ever!! Colleges are in the 6 counties and the spread is pretty much blamed on no social distancing in the bars. I'm trying to remember  when i was college age and if i was irresponsible like that. Oh yeah- i had to work every weekend to pay for school- no parties for this co-ed.

cal- hope you got good sleep last night- can you nap during the day? If i'm really tired i can.

ra- yay for you on the signs; i'll have to look up that megastore.

rues- i've noticed our leaves are starting to fall too. But i thought it was because of our drought. It is really dry here- only   .4" of rain all month. I am glad that September is just around the corner.  Even the  weeds are having a hard time of it.

Time for breakfast- have a great day jewelies!

A Time to Eat and A Time to Rest - UPDATE August 28, 2020
28 August 2020
 Print Email
Cinnamons female cub, Clove
Cinnamons female cub, Clove
The wild foods in the scats here are mostly vegetation in this season when berries would normally be the main food. In this scat, mountain-ash berries are an additional component as well as raspberry seeds. However, mountain-ash berries are generally eaten in September after the first frost, but bears are eating them early; and most of them are coming through whole. No wonder so many bears are seeking supplemental foods. What bears will eat depends on what the alternatives are.

A small yearling we named Rosemary is a bear of unknown origin. She showed up alone and hungry. The photo shows her about to climb a white pine to rest after dining on supplemental food here today. White pines are the bears? favorite resting trees in this region, which is probably because these trees have the best bark for climbing, the biggest branches for resting, and a dense canopy of needles to provide shade.

Some of the bears seen resting today are Cinnamon?s female cub which is now named Clove, a yearling we couldn?t identify in its resting position, and Kimani?s lone cub named Unna (a female). All were in white pines.

Thank you for all you do.

hi jewelies it is 72 here 72 in the barn. feels cooler out. only saw 2 raccoonies. bear scat looks like oct fest. i hope little rosemary stays right close to that bear center my moms name was rosemary too. sick its almost the first of sept wish all them bears would stay close to there and close to dr rogers cabin too. calling for rain here sun thru maybe wed so sad about that we will have to cut lots of pearl and sweets clover and grass today been cutting enough to last 3 days my kitchen smells good like clover and grass table full of boxes and laundry baskets. i would like to try to go see dee she has called me several times jim told her i am with pearl alot and got tons to do. i wish i could buy time.

hi lupe when i take sister out driving the gravel roads we have been seeing like asphalt down in front of people home even down in the bottoms some around here when we drive over no dust! jim talked to our maintence man he is going to call down to richmond monday its called dust free something and its free road grader man said he would not go over it either. so that would be great cause the dust in this house is awful and everyone get in be really nice.wont be long till the chiefs home opener is here  The 2020 NFL season will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 10 with the Houston Texans at the Kansas City Chiefs :)

Good morning everyone- 65 here so the cold front went through. But we had little rain- barely wet the sidewalk. But dew points are lower so good.
Just watched local news and sports- high school football was played last night- showed sparse attendance in the stands but people had masks on- showed  people cleaning footballs between plays. So there must have been protocols because of ykw. Iowa had even more cases yesterday  2663 new cases with a positive rate of 15%. Really scarey- glad i don't live in a college town.

Finals in the Western and Southern Tennis tournament today then on monday the US Open starts and goes for 2weeks.  Yay.

cal- we have that option to put stuff on the road to keep down the dust. We've never gotten it but it would be a good idea this year. I hope you can find some time to go see Dee. Maybe jim can take over your stuff for an afternoon.

Yay football is starting!  So glad for all of us.
I'm behind-   have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Laura didn't deliver much rain to us. When I got up this morning it looked like all we got were sprinkles. I was hoping to get an inch or so to help fill up the pool! On radar looks like she went more to the southern counties.

Cal, that was a great description of the bear scat! Lol! I hope Rosemary stays close by, too. Cool that is your mom's name! I know another Rosemary near by! Cutest pics of the cubs hanging out on those limbs. Good idea to put Pearl's meds in Twinkies! How could anyone turn down a Twinkie?

Lupe, our ykw cases went way up on Friday! Governor keeps blaming it on people who have vacationed at the beach. I look for more after schools start. Hope I'm wrong. Crow is a happy camper because the Tour de France started at 8am this morning. It goes on for 3 weeks. Lots of beautiful scenery is about all I can say about it!

Lots of activity in my neighborhood. Two doors down a new house is being built. For 70 years a neighborhood grocery store sat there. After the grocery store closed it became a real estate office then an apartment. It was torn down a year ago because of black mold. It will be nice to see a new house there. I was told that the builder is building it for his dad. Then across the street the abandoned  brick house was  torn down. Jeff, the neighbor next door to that property, sued the lady that abandoned the house. He won the lawsuit and was able to purchase the property. Took less than an hour to tear the house down. It took 10 big dump truck loads of dirt to fill in the basement hole. Now he has the entire lot seeded and is making plans on landscaping the area and remodeling the garage that he left standing. Exciting times in this quiet little neighborhood!

Tasha Eating Chokecherries - UPDATE August 30, 2020

Kimani and Unna
Kimani and Unna

In this 5-minute video, chokecherries had Tasha?s full attention. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLobJCB1O-Q

At the WRI, non-clan Kimani and her cub Unna were adding weight for winter this morning. The small size of Unna suggests that she earlier had to share milk with littermates that didn?t survive. Now with supplemental food, Unna is doing well and looks to be enough over 20 pounds to make it through the winter.Goldfinch
