Good morning everyone- oh cal- still laughing at your comment about Serena's chest! I've always been amazed at her athleticism in spite of the "girls."  Just the difference in body types between Serena and Venus is so amazing.

Play on the outside courts was suspended for rain so i got to bed at a reasonable hour. Two matches need to be completed today. Nine matches on my slate today- early start and late finish.

48 this morning and clear- i am loving this weather.  I pulled out all my petunias that were leggy and made room for mums. Maybe i can find time today to get to the greenhouse. Need some potting soil to repot my 2 houseplants to bring inside.  My inventory of houseplants was severely pruned by several baby racoons earlier this summer. Such devastation but oh so fun to see those babies.

rues- so sorry about Boo- we all here feel for you. But what a lucky kitten. Robin has her work cut out for her.  I've done my share of fostering orphans and it is quite a commitment. Sending good vibes her way.

Time for breakfast here-  Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
All Seems OK - UPDATE September 4, 2020
04 September 2020
 Print Email
Ted 9-3-2020
Ted 9-3-2020

With no hunters around today and no gunshots, all seems okay.

A picture of Ted from yesterday makes his forehead look white. It could be the sun. I want to see him soon for myself.

Jacks foot
Jack's foot
Here at the WRI, One-eyed Jack?s toes are the whitest I?ve seen on any bear. He is in his early to mid-20?s, guessing 23. I?ll have to double-check the toes of 33-year-old Shadow when I can. She has the whitest forehead I?ve ever seen.

Beautiful, quiet day.

Thank you for all you do.

hi jewelies it is 60 here 65 in the barn one raccoonie. teds head does look white and jacks paw looks like a dogs paw.

hi ra thanks for the kentucky derby reminder i would hate to miss that.

In an already unconventional year for horse racing, one of the sport?s longest-running and well known events will take place four months later than originally planned.

The 2020 Kentucky Derby, which was moved from the first Saturday in May to the first Saturday in September (Sept. 5, 2:30 p.m. ET, NBC) will be the race?s 146th edition?and possibly its most unique, since Churchill Downs will be fanless and jockeys will follow strict COVID-19 precautions, among other things.

The 146th Kentucky Derby will air on Saturday, Sept. 5 starting at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC as well as NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app. Post time is set for approximately 7:01 p.m. ET.

Good morning everyone-  58 here and clear.
cal- you do have a time with those girls but only $40. Good for you. I took Izzy in for a checkup yesterday. Her meds would run out on sunday and with the holiday i wanted my vet to know she wasn't right yet. Multiple sneezes and snot flying. I was supposed to ust drop her off  and wait for a call to pick her up. I hate that but my vet is booked out 3 weeks. Geez!! Well- when i got there they could take me right away. So a different antibiotic and an antihistamine.  So glad i could bring her right home.  It is so nice having an indoor cat- the first couple days here she tried to get out when i fed the outside cats. It took me a little while to figure out that i had to put her food down first. She thought  all the food would be outside! She spends a lot of time looking out the windows but is content to just look.
Three American women won yesterday  Jen Brady, Shelby Rogers and Catherine McNally.
Todays matches are JJ Wolf and Francis Tiafoe- 2 American men left. Also Madison Keys, Sofia Kenin and Amanda Anisimova. Also Sloane Stephens and Serena Williams are still in it but unfortunately they play each other. Catherine Mc nally plays again today since yesterday's match was a finish match postponed from Thursday. The numbers are getting smaller but still seem to spread over a whole day for me. It looks like an early night tonight.

Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- posting a bit early because it looks like we may have storms coming through soon.  Yay for rain!  cal- yes Serena did win yesterday and the only other American to win is Francis Tiafoe. He is the last American man left.  Sofia Kenin also won.
Today Novak plays at 1 PM and Jen Brady plays at 10 AM and Shelby Rogers this afternoon maybe around 2.

I checked the Steelers schedule- they start with monday night the 14th for an away game against the Giants. So cool.

I went to my local greenhouse yesterday and got a bunch of mums- too many really but i just love mums. Here they are marginal as perennials so mostly i just keep them as annuals in containers.  I do have a couple in bed that keep coming back plus one that is pale pink and pale yellow. That one is very prolific. I also got one Swedish ivy repotted and ready to bring inside. I had put this plant from the house into many containers. The racoons  destroyed the original  pot on the back porch (along with all but 2 of the pots on the porch). So i'm reclaiming the plants from the containers. I went really early on Saturday but there were bunches of people there already. They have zillions of mums and they had already sold a bunch, So good to see our local businesses doing well.

Need to feed the outside guys before the weather hits.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! I'm babysitting a tiny little kitten! Yikes, it's so scary. Robin brought her, no name yet, here an hour ago. Then she went back home to spend some  alone time with Tela. Tela isn't growling at the kitten any more but she isn't loving her either! Little kitty has a vet appointment Tuesday. Robin wanted our fav vet Dr Casto to see her but like Lupe's vet, Casto is booked up for a couple weeks. Robin took whatever vet she could get in with. She wants to make sure that it is safe for Tela to be around kitty. Hope Robin gets back here before feeding time!

Cal, strange watching the Derby without seeing all those ladies in their hats! Glad it wasn't raining. I didn't have a favorite. Thought they were all beautiful! Well, Crow certainly surprised me the day after Boo passed away when he said that he bet Molly was waiting for Boo at the other end of the Rainbow Bridge! He said she was of course being the troll she always was to him when he wanted to get into the living room. But this time she told him he could come on across. And they ran off together. Crow never says things like that. But I'm glad he did!

Ra,  how's things going at your daughter's school? Kids start here on Tuesday. First football games were played on Friday night. Next Friday's games for both local high schools have been cancelled because the counties they were supposed to play went in the red zone which means too many ykw cases! Going to be a crazy season sounds like to me.

Lupe, I haven't even thought about mums! Most of my annuals are looking raggedy! I did bring inside a couple houseplants yesterday. I'm going to leave most of them outside for as long as I can. It has been perfect weather here the last couple days. Highs in the 70's and night's in the 50's. Robin got in the pool yesterday and said the water was cold. Won't be long before we close the pool for winter. We would have already done it if it weren't for Robin wanting to float around on that slice of pizza! She does have a nice tan.

Have a nice evening! Stay safe!

Daily Updates
Bear News from Sharon Herrell - UPDATE September 6, 2020
06 September 2020
 Print Email
This week's news, Tasha enjoys an apple, Lucky's eye in the sky and Ted's day out.

Ted
Ted
Earlier this week a few Ely residents shared their abundant supply of apples with our bears. It is interesting when our bears find apples on the mound, around or in the pond, apples become a treasured treat. If we put them in their dinner or breakfast bowl, apples aren't as welcome as grapes.

Tasha has surpassed her 2019 hibernation weight as of Friday's weigh in. Given the fact that we do many Behind The Scene tours it's ok; she will just have to dig a bigger den for herself. She is seen in her picture enjoying an apple she found on the mound. We are hoping that one of the bears or all the bears become responsible for planting a small orchard in the 2 1/2 acres.

Lucky
Lucky
Ted had another nice day out of his enclosure. He ate grass for a while on the mound, had words with Lucky and walked down to the viewing area. He now weighs 651. He is spending more time marking near his old den. He also uses the rich cedar oils to keep bugs away and add glow to his sleek new fur.

The climb to peer across the other enclosures is a short jump and climb for Lucky. He easily did it and stayed there for a short time just looking around. Don't you wonder what goes through their minds? Lucky is strong and goes up with little loss of energy. He has only taken down the chokecherry tree and bent over the ash tree.

Holly posed in the Black-eyed Susans and Wild Mustard as one of our Pond Chat Moderators, Marge, snapped a picture with the PTZ cam. The flowers around the pond add such beautiful background to an already beautiful bear. Holly has slowed down as have all the bears. We are in fall transition with our bears. They will soon get straw in preparation for denning.

Fall transition is the last phase a bear goes through before hibernation. From our website: Fall transition a is a period after hyperphagia when metabolic processes change in preparation for hibernation. Bears voluntarily eat less but continue to drink to purge body waste. They become increasingly lethargic, resting 22 or more hours per day often near water. Active heart rates fall from 80-100 per minute to 50-60 per minute and sleeping heart rates fall from 66-80 per minute to less than 22 per minute."
