Hello all- what a fun few days it has been! My laptop is fixed- could get wi-fi but not internet. Hubby and i worked on it some- not fixed-  took it to a tech- $101 and not fixed- bought a new router- not fixed. So about an hour ago i went into settings and thought i'd fixed it. Hubby was messing with the old router at the same time. I yelled it is fixed- so we don't really know who did the fix. lol  so not messing with  anything again.  We also bought a new printer which we've needed for almost a year and hubby hooking that up now. I'm not helping or i'm helping by not helping.

Will catch up later.

Bear News ? July 25, 2020

Ted
Ted
Ted is an awesome bear! The strands of gray hairs across his forehead are so revealing of his age. Ted at 23.7 years of age is a regal example of how an aging bear looks. I think he knows he's handsome and well loved.

I took some photos inside Ted's enclosure; it's no wonder Holly hangs around his enclosure because it is full of dogwood and she loves them. Of course she can?t get to the dogwood in Ted?s enclosure, so she has to forage for them in the big enclosure. There are many bushes throughout the 2.5 acres, but the best are found in Ted's enclosure! The white berries aren't tasty to humans, but the bears enjoy them.Tasha
Tasha

The raspberries are also ripe, and it looks like Ted nibbles at them. He much prefers that the interns pick them for him and place them in his bowl. Unfortunately, the serviceberry/ juneberries behind the falls didn't ripen this year. The beaked hazelnut seem to be large and plentiful at this writing.

Holly
Holly
The rain came down hard this past Tuesday. The bears chose to stay in, and Holly was relaxed as interns visited her with our Behind the Scenes guests. Holly has shed most of her winter coat and as evidence I included a picture of thistle that has clumps of her fur stuck to the newly developing burrs.

Lucky bear looked back before finishing his walk up the rock den as seen in the photo. He wanted the spread that had been put out earlier. Lucky is very good at finding the foods hidden around the pond. He always finds treat in the new feeder, and even though he's almost 500 pounds, he still climbs for the treats in the trolley feeder.

.Lucky
Lucky
This week Tasha's mohawk has gotten thinner and as it runs the course of her spine, she also has the small tuffs between her ears. She has been rubbing on the fence and on the aspens in her enclosure to help the shedding process along

If you've been watching, you'll see she has a different rocking tub. I switched her broken tub for a donated tub to give her more room to recline; it is also sturdier. She just enjoys sitting in it and watching her guests arrive.

Coming soon, a wish list of things you may be able to help us with, stay tuned.

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bear Keeper

For the Black Bear Field Course, a participant who is here for her 6th course said it was the best she had ever seen. A couple that are here for their fourth time seconded that. News of Carolyn and her cubs got us started. For a bonus, we saw 3 mothers with cubs at that stop. Then it was time to eat. Next, we got a call that 33-year-old Shadow was seen. We raced over and caught a nice view of her to record the whitening face of the second oldest black bear on record?wild or captive. 21-year-old RC and her 4 cubs (3 females and a male) were also there. RC is the oldest reproducing mother in the study, and Shadow, who gave birth to her last cub five years ago now defers to RC. Then Daisy who was not due for cubs this year came by and was her usual good self. Next, it was her mother Bow with her three cubs of unknown sex (still). Two of them posed by a tree where she had left them. When we thought we had seen it all, 13-year-old Lily came by for the nicest reunion with her I?ve had in years?until RC told her she should go. The picture of Lily does not do her justice. As an encore, 15-year-old Ursula stopped by for the best reunion I?ve had with HER in years.

The day couldn?t have been better?the weather, the people, the food, and the bears. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Good morning everyone- so cal-  hope you are okay in your storm. Radar looks gnarly there.

It is raining here- haven't checked the gauge but we had a little rain yesterday evening too. It has been dry- we will probably mow today or tomorrow. Yesterday we went for a ride and the gravel roads were really dusty.

Well - i'd best get moving- big day today- we have an appointment at our county animal  shelter. We've been approved to adopt a cat. I talked to the cat co-ordinator yesterday. She asked if i was looking for a kitten and when i said no i wanted an adult she was glad. She said their last kitten was adopted that day.  I'm hoping someone there likes us right away.  We'll see.

Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- 59 here with windows open- not humid at all. We just got a half inch of rain here.

Well- her name is Dizzy; she is 7 years old; early life uncertain but she showed up at a dairy farm and they turned her over to the shelter. She had a cat bite wound, cancer and healed just fine. All this since March when she was surrendered to the shelter.  I'll have to research her type but the pathologist said it is very unusual in cats.

The shelter worker said most people have been turned off by the cancer survivor part of her.  She has the most wonderful temperament. The best part of every lap cat i've ever had. We pretty much let her loose in the house right away. I showed her her litter pan, food and water. Left the carrier out too.  She is a house cat- no outside for her.  With the windows open she heard coyotes outside- didn't even go to the open window; just snuggled deeper into our chair.  I don't know where she slept last night but not on the bed don't think. I was up for almost an hour before she came to me.

have a great day jewelies

Hi Jewelies! Started out cool and rainy this morning but by this afternoon it was hot and humid again. Crow and I took Robin's leather sectional couch to the Habitat for Humanity Restore  right after the rain ended. Had to make 2 trips because only one section would fit in the truck at a time. Good thing the Restore is close by. Tomorrow her new couch is being delivered but because of ykw the delivery guys can't bring it inside! I don't think it will be as heavy so hopefully we can get it inside without any problems.

Cal, lots of bear sightings in the update! That would be so exciting seeing all of them!

Lupe, congrats on your new addition to the family! How cool that you adopted an adult! Welcome Dizzy! Wonder how she got that name? Glad you are back online!

Have a nice evening and stay safe! We had 19 more cases in my county today and 3 more deaths statewide. :'(

Daily Updates
Bears Galore and Beauty on the Water - UPDATE July 28, 2020
28 July 2020
 Print Email
With little food in the forest, we are diverting hungry bears from becoming nuisances. White water lily
White water lily
In such times, bears commonly go from house to house looking for garbage and bird seed and even looking for food inside houses. This was an extra bad food year due to late spring and early summer drought, reducing early summer berries (juneberries, blueberries, and raspberries) to a fraction of their normal production. Eagles Nest Township has a reputation for minimizing that by feeding bears over the last six decades.

Alert doe
Alert doe
The lack of food has produced a bonanza of thrills for Black Bear Field Course participants. Stories of Lily, Ursula, Jewel, Shadow, One-eyed Jack, V-Dot, Big Harry, Braveheart, Pete, Bow, Samantha, Faith, Ty, Fern, Daisy, Oliana, RC, Fred, Ricky, Lucy, Spanky, and others that are showing up after absences of several years are too many to tell.

During midday lulls, this group that has heard all the lectures multiple times elected to take pontoon rides to see other wildlife. Today was a beautiful day for that.

In a windy channel, common mergansers that are now in non-breeding plumage rode out the waves.

Loon in green water
Loon in green water
Along the shoreline of a little bay that was out of the wind, a white water lily stood out brightly against the dark shadowed water.

In another bay, a baby loon slept in the pretty blue water that reflected the sky. It is molting its fluffy baby plumage and growing the brown juvenile plumage that it will maintain through several molts for nearly three years on the Atlantic Ocean. Then it grows its black and white adult plumage in time to migrate back to a local lake, establish a territory, and (with luck) is able to mate for life.

At the other end of the lake, a loon swam in green-looking water that reflected the shoreline vegetation.

Along the shore we saw a tree with some of the sparse chokecherries that survived the drought. Some of the scats we see contain cherry pits.

We are looking forward to some relief for the bears in a couple weeks with what looks to be a good hazelnut crop. They ripen in mid August and hang on until mid-September. These nuts can make a big difference in bear movements, fattening, and ability to maintain pregnancies. In years of good hazelnut crops, people wonder where all the bears disappeared to.

As we ended the ride today, a mother deer alertly looked down on us from a ridge where she was shortly joined by her fawn.

A nice day of excitement, learning, and fun.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone-  i'm so glad  the bears are getting fed with so little wild food. We have a mulberry tree in our yard and it is usually just filled with birds. This year there are few berries. Hubby and i  think it is because we had 2  very late frosts 2 days in a row.  The tree is fine just no fruit.

This year we've seen robins, cardinals and other birds coming up to the porch to eat left over cat food. Yesterday hubby saw a Mom robin feeding her already fledged babies food from the bowl. He said the babies were on the sidewalk and the Mom went to the bowl- got food and took it over to the babies.

Dizzy's first day went so well. She is just perfect for us. At night i believe she sleeps under our bed and she spent a good part of the morning there also. Hubby thinks she was up most of the night but i didn't hear her. I woke to scratching in the litter pan. I looked up the kind of cancer she had and the news .wasn't really good. But we talked about it and decided to just make the best of the time we have together. Guess that's about all we can do.
I combed her and she doesn't mind it at all. I even got a few nails trimmed.

Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Bears in the City of Ely, Minnesota - UPDATE July 29, 2020
29 July 2020
 Print Email
In this year of spring drought and few blueberries, bears are being seen in Ely in unusual numbers. Bear in Whiteside Park
Bear in Whiteside Park
This scared young bear that is probably 2-4 years old is in a cottonwood tree in Whiteside Park in the center of town. The tree is beside the sidewalk along Sheridan Street, which is the main street of town. I took the picture from the sidewalk across the street.

When drought is the cause of berry failures, patches growing on deeper, moister soil can still produce berries here and there. The word from blueberry pickers I talked to in the crowd that was watching the bear is that blueberries are very scarce, and the few they see are very small.

Police were keeping people away from the tree, making them stay across the street. With heavy traffic going by on the street, though, the bear showed no sign of coming down. He or she will probably come down when people go to bed and the street has little traffic.

This video is of a different bear walking through the center of Ely filmed on June 2 by a volunteer of ours. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aij_yqHNfUs

Good morning everyone- I'm a little late since i have a new definition of lap top since our new addition on monday. She doesn't mind taking a snooze on the laptop at all. lol
Hubby  and i spent a good deal of time on our trip to Cantril yesterday trying to come up with a suitable name for Dizzy. I truly thought she needed something a bit classier. We came up with and discarded several names. We both knew that when we said it out loud  we'd immediately know. I came up with Izzy and we knew. Not so much of a change for her and Izzy is short for Isabelle which is my middle name. (I usually don't admit to that but it has become a popular name lately.) So Izzy it is.
She continues to amaze us with her sweet disposition. When we are sitting in our chairs she walks up to the chair and waits til we tap the arm as an invitation to come up. Then she jumps up. She's done that with both of us. Yesterday when i returned from class she was snuggled up on my hubby's lap. What a cat! What a guy!
We got stocked up on groceries yesterday plus i got stuff for my niece's birthday in August. Dutchmen's has a huge choice of bulk foods and i like to find different things to send to her that she may not be able to get where she lives. I found dried hibiscus- hmm- wonder what she'll use that for.  She is into all things herbal and is a wonderful cook.
Well- i'd best get moving- Izzy is sleeping on "her" chair now.

Have a great day jewelies!   I saw 10# boxes of Michigan blueberries yesterday and would love to send a truckload to Ely.
