Hi Jewelies!  Sorry I have been MIA!  I didn't realize I hadn't posted for so long!

lupine... So far, we haven't had any rain from the hurricane.  Whoever named them this year sure made it hard for the newscasters and weather people!!  They all stumble over Isaisa all the time.  lol  Love your flowers!  And, a big welcome to your new baby, Izzy!  She sounds like she's a real treasure and way better behaved than my two!!

cal... I haven't thanked you for the puzzles in awhile... thank you!  Although some of the triangle ones have been pretty challenging!!  lol  Love all the bear's pics in the updates!  they're so pretty!  Well, cable guy #7 was here yesterday and says they're going to walk the cable line down our road to find out what my issue is exactly.  Today, so far, has been good, but I've said that before...  Got my ditch mowed this morning... Landon called me to see if it was raining at my house... guess it was at his.  I asked him about mowing once school starts, and he said we can keep our same schedule, he doesn't have classes on Monday mornings.  Good!

JP... DOES IT HELP YOU SEE IF WE TYPE IN CAPS OR IS IT BETTER TO CHANGE THE FONT SIZE, TOO?  LET US KNOW AND WE'D BE GLAD TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES FOR YOU TO BE ABLE TO SEE IT BETTER.  WON'T BE LONG AND YOU'LL BE HITTING THE BIG 97!!  IT'S SUCH A TREAT FOR ALL OF US HERE TO SEE YOU AGAIN!  THANKS FOR COMING BACK FOR A VISIT!!

rues... So sad to read that the little kitten that Robin found didn't make it.  At least, she tried.  I'm looking forward to getting the deer crossing signs up on my road,  hope it makes people aware of the wildlife around here.  Trying to save the wildlife and maybe the people, too.  I had to dig out all my old papers to get my new license, too.  Glad to have it done though... even though I probably won't be going on any airplanes or crossing any borders any time soon!  lol

joho... Hope you and Joan are doing good.

Hi to everyone!  Have a good day!

Good morning everyone and Happy Birthday Nora- hope you do something fun today!

Izzy and i just got done with a long combing. She has her first visit with the vet this morning. Just a complete nail trim and i want him to look at her ears. She shakes her head a little. Plus we need to get Revolution script so i can order from Pet Med or Chewy. My vet doesn't carry it and that's what they used at the shelter.

The trip to the city was uneventful.  The highlight was a stop at Menards. Hubby needed some stuff. We were going to eat out but decided to come home instead. \

It is 54 here and yesterday's high was 74. So nice- no ac.
ra- what is it with your cable? geez- I had a survey from the people who looked at my laptop when the internet wasn't working. I gave a bad review only because they saw nothing wrong, did a couple of updates and charged me $100. We'll see if i hear from them.  Tech problems are so annoying.

Need to get moving--have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Water Action and a Sign of Age - UPDATE August 4, 2020
04 August 2020
 Print Email
Bear and stick in pond   bear and stick in pond

I saw the best water action I can remember today but caught only a bit of it. The rest of the time I was clicking away with no card in the camera. It started with a bear in a pond noticing a stick to investigate like Ted, Lucky, Holly, and Tasha do. The bear rose up and pulled it down and began to manipulate it.

Then I spotted a bear swimming across the lake out my window. I made it down to the dock in time get it swimming, getting out, and looking toward me from across the lake when I made shhhh noise. I heard splashing elsewhere and tried to see what it was. Then two bears got up on top of the beaver lodge that is in the marsh. Good sun. No pictures. I didn?t check the camera in my hurry.

VDot left canineVDot gave us a good look at his left upper canine tooth when he twitched his upper lip to get rid of a pesky fly. The pattern of whitish enamel on the tooth and yellowish cementum on the root shows his advanced age. As the root grows, it makes the tooth protrude a little more each year. At three or four years of age, the place where the enamel and cementum meet on the tooth reaches the gum line. Over the years the amount of cementum visible extends farther and farther beyond the gum line. We first saw VDot as a young adult male in 2007 and he is not as old as Jack, but he is showing a lot of cementum. It was our first look at that with him, thanks to the flies. We would have liked to measure the distance from the gum line to the enamel but we thought that might be too much of an intrusion on a sleeping bear. They say to let sleeping bears lie. With this bear it would not be because of danger, we just don?t like to disturb him. VDot?s 13-year history of knowing us will be a chapter in the book.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- as you can tell i slept in. For some reason i woke up after slepping 3 hours and then i couldn't get back to sleep. Bummer. I was on the verge of just getting up but must have fallen asleep. I think i got more than my usual 8 hours anyhow. Then i awoke to my husband saying that he thought his hair was growing back. What!! I rolled over and looked up and Izzy was sleeping on his pillow between his head and the head board. It was cool in the house and i think Izzy  wanted to seek out warmth.

49 here and perfectly clear. My kind of weather.

Izzy had her first visit to the vet. Weird protocol- they saw me pull in and my vet was out watering the extensive flowers out front.  We talked about Iz and they took her inside.  My vet brought her out and we discussed her care- he didn't find anything suspicious but said she sure went through a lot already. Then he said she is in the best possible place now. I agree- hubby made her a scratching pad yesterday. We'll se if she uses it.

Time to get a move on-  Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Water Play, Donna Recognized, and More - UPDATE August 5, 2020
05 August 2020
 Print Email
After shooting water action with no card in the camera last evening, I was rewarded with even bigger action today when I was ready.

3 Amigos of 2020
3 Amigos of 2020

Reminding me of the Three Amigos of years back (Mickey, Dale, and Cal) as were shown in the Bearwalker documentary, 3 yearlings are again hanging out to travel and play together. We haven?t seen the current three well enough to know who they are yet. Today, we saw them playing on land: play-biting, hugging, wrestling, and taking each other down. After a half hour or so, they moved the spectacle to a pond for more of the same with a lot of splashing. They even played a bit as they paused for a bite to eat. Then they swam across the lake, frequently played as they swam?especially so when they reached the shallow water of the far shore.20200805 Yearlings playing while swimming

Young bears, and sometimes older bears, like to have fun. Seeing the bears playing today reminded me of the days when Lucky, as a cub, decided to accept Ted?s play advances. Even though Ted was more than 10 times his size, Lucky dared to lie on his back under Ted and trade gentle play-bites, etc. When Lucky got bigger, Ted let Lucky take him down and stand over him with Ted playing happily on his back. Eventually, playing together ended. As Lucky matured, he began treating his old play-buddy like a rival and shifted his play to Holly.

I was delighted today to get this 1 minute 46 second video of Spencer and Moe recognizing my wife Donna for all she did to develop the beautiful flower garden at the Bear Center during 2007-2017. I remember the house being filled with flower pots and lights as she grew plants from seeds in winter and spring and then worked planting these select plants to give color and to support pollinators. The garden and its perennial plants continue today with others weeding it, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxZttdpeAbgBraveheart eating chokecherries

A young yellow-bellied sapsucker banged into a window today. We ran out to see if it was okay. It appeared that it would be okay, so we put it on the side of a white pine that is easy to cling to. It rested for a half hour or so, perked up, and flew away for a happy ending.

On another happy note, a neighbor went to Ely and picked a bucket of ripe chokecherries that explain why so many bears have been coming into Ely in this time of marginal food in the woods. Braveheart showed her immediate preference for the chokecherries. So did VDot when he appeared. Good bears and good neighbors.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 62 here and it looks like we had a tiny bit of rain. Tiny bit- sidewalk is just barely damp. Yesterday i got a lot of weeding and trimming done. Several lilies were done so i whacked them back. I left the one that is next to the butterfly weed that has 2 Monarch caterpillars on it so far.  I weeded my asparagus patch and trimmed stalks back that had fallen over making it hard to mow around. I drove the pick up close and loaded it to the brim.  Then my plan was to go to the barn garden but there were several butterflies feeding on the purple coneflowers so i waited until after lunch to go there. Black swallowtail and a yellow swallowtail plus Monarchs were around and fun to watch. I have a chair out there so i can relax, rest and observe.

I deadheaded some tall white phlox so the side blooms can be seen better. On our rives i've seen some other colors and they are on my list for next year. Would love a bright red splash in the south beds.
Wow- raining now- so great!

Izzy is on the windowsill watching the rain- we love her!

Have a great day jewelies!
