Lupe, thanks for the pic! I've never seen anything like that! I'd hate to be in that truck with a helicopter landing on it! Yikes! Is the chemical they spray toxic to animals and people?

Jo, happy to hear that Joan is doing better! :)

Daily Updates
Burt - UPDATE July 18, 2020
18 July 2020
 Print Email
I should have recognized him immediately, but it had been too many years and too much change. 15 year old Burt
15-year-old Burt
The Burt I had known since I met him in his natal den along with his sibling Ursula in 2005 is now turning white beyond his years. He is only 15 but has nearly the white of his 33-year-old mother Shadow. I haven?t looked closely enough at Shadow to notice her eyelashes, but Burt?s white eyelashes are the first thing I noticed and also in the increasing number of bears that are showing the white faces of age.

I don?t know if Burt actually recognized me or just felt at home in a spot he had visited for years. It was great to see him and feel his calm and gentle trust. I hope he keeps coming so Black Bear Field Course Participants can meet him. I hope I can get my picture taken with him as a memory of our history. I relate to his aging body and white hair. At 15, he has more white than 23-year-old Ted, showing how this trait can vary among individuals. He also looks older than his second cousin, Pete (son of June), who is the same age.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- it is 80 here at 6 AM!!! Very humid too. Yesterday i spent most of the morning cutting off spent blooms, weeding and planting grass.... again. The package instructions say germination is 5 to 10 days and some even after that. I look at it and forget when i seeded it because i've done it so often. lol  It was cool enough that i spent some time just sitting and enjoying nature.--

rues- i don't know if the spray used on the fields is harmful to humans and critters but i take no chances. Stay inside with windows shut. I encourage all birds and butterflies to come to our side of the road. I've never seen anything dead here but i don't go into the field that was sprayed.

The update was really interesting today. I guess bears show their age differently just like humans do. Funny thing yesterday- i tuned into NABC  and saw there was a bear by the visitor center. He was eating then walked to the pond. I said that is Ted's walk. Sure enough it was Ted. lol  I have the chat on a different site so i checked there for an ID to be sure.

Have a great day jewelies!

Cal, looks like the raccoon visit was a one time visit. Doesn't look like he has been back. I'm kinda happy about that!  Another day in the 90's. I'm a little sick of it. Too hot and humid to be outside for very long. We need rain, too.  Glad that Burt is back! Hope Dr Rogers can get a pic with him!

Lupe, I water my baby grass along the driveway every afternoon. Most of it is growing now. I even have some crab grass growing in it, too! Pretty sure I didn't plant that! What crop grows in the fields they spray? Hope the birds and butterflies take you up on your offer and come to your side of the road!

Have a nice afternoon! Stay safe!

Daily Updates
Sharon?s Bear Report - UPDATE July 19, 2020
19 July 2020
 Print Email
Bear News ? July 19, 2020

This week?s news: Bear Goodie Bags, Ted & Tasha have enough and Holly?s coat.

Lucky
Lucky
Firstly, a big thank you to the Northwoods Bear Foundation and the Lilypad Picnic team; together they raised $1,715 for the Bear Goodie Bags. Thank you to our interns for designing the bags and all of the Lilypadders that participated.

The Bear Center has been busy with visitors this past week. In the photo of Ted, he said good night after his dinner and put his paw over his eyes. This is unusual because Ted loves people, but he had eaten so well and had seen so many guests, he decided to nap and miss a couple of our Behind the Scene tours.Ted
Ted

Our Tasha bear was in the same predicament, having eaten her treats and many Behind the Scene tours, she went to the rear of her enclosure and fell asleep. Interestingly, our visitors love seeing the bears regardless of whether they are up and ready to eat or resting.

Tasha naps
Tasha
Holly bear stopped by the edge of the pathway for some quick raspberries. A bears? long sticky tongue and prehensile lips (capable of grasping) allows them to readily eat and enjoy the juicy raspberries growing in the enclosure. The interns have picked several cups of Juneberries that grow in the front of the building. The plants, shrubs, and trees displayed as visitors come into the building depict many of the foods black bears eat in the area.

Holly
Holly
You?ll notice the mound of fur that has accumulated on Holly?s back. She looks as though she has another animal riding on her, lol. As the week progressed, she rubbed most of it off. Both females have some fur left to shed out. Lucky has just started to shed and we?re seeing some brown patches in Ted?s coat as well.

Interns and Spencer pulling Tansy
Interns and Spencer pulling Tansy
Lucky bear, handsome as ever, swam for an apple. He?s very skillful in the way he eats the apple, taking small bites and enjoying it. Some visitors are surprised at how slow and direct the bears eat. Visitors have also mentioned how strong the bears are as Lucky and Tasha move the logs around as they swim. It?s fun to see the bears in the water and Lucky eating the apples.

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bear Keeper

Good morning everyone- 64 here and mostly clear; refreshing after the last few days.
The update was funny this morning- Ted looked so cute with his paw over his face. And Tasha going away from people to the back of her enclosure. cal- i'll go with you and i'll  feed Holly while you brush her! And Lucky with his apple in the pond- so great there have been lots of visitors in Ely.

We went on a short ride yesterday. It looked like rain south of us so we headed west and north. We ended up at a state park- Lake Iowa. Lots of campers- even some tent campers. Nowadays rv's are very popular so i'm always glad to see young people in tents. Though i got a chuckle out of one site. The people were packing up what was at least 3 tents and i don't know how many families. Two people were carrying big box fans to their cars. In all our times camping in tents we have never once thought of packing a fan. Of course, we've never camped in Iowa and especially not in July!  lol

We drove around the lake and saw a huge dead tree by where they launch boats. In it were several huge tv's. At least 7 to 10. Wow! I guess they were waiting for lunch to be served.  We stopped at the nature center- not open of course- but walked through their native plantings for especially Monarch butterflies. Our field has zillions of grey headed coneflowers blooming  (they are really yellow). I keep checking for Monarch caterpillars but no luck yet.
rues- the field that was sprayed last week was a corn field. We saw a helicopter crew yesterday so hubby got to see the kind of truck they land on.
Got to get a move on- have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!!  Sure is hot around here!  Hard to breathe outside, it's so humid, too!  The young man came this morning and cut the grass in my ditch for the first time.  He did a good job, and i'm so glad to not have to do it myself!

cal... My youngest grand came to visit me before she had to go to work today.  When she was leaving, she scared a buck and doe that were on the other side of my car... scared her, too!  lol

rues... That black cloud is still hanging around... I ordered a toaster oven for my clemson grand on Ebay and the guy cancelled the order,so I found another one just like it and bought it.  Then... when it came it wasn't even the same brand and it was a convection oven!  The guy refunded my money and told me to keep it.  I had already told him that I had no use for it, but my daughter put it on facebook for sale and a lady came yesterday and bought it from me.  At least I made a little on the hassle!  Then I found the right toaster oven on Amazon and just bought it there.

lupine... Still no butterflies on your butterfly weed?  Me either.  It has been blooming for a long time already and no takers.  I miss seeing all the butterflies that used to come around here.

joho... So good to see your posts!  Thanks for letting us know that you and Joan are ok.

Had a sad thing happen to one of my son-in-law's friends.  Somehow his 3 year old daughter got out of the house undetected and they found her at the bottom of a neighbor's pool.  They pulled her out, got her heart going again, but she's not going to make it.  They're talking funeral and organ donation now.  So sad.  There was a fence and gate around the pool, so she had to have figured out how to open the gate...  The dad was napping and the mother was there, doing ....... who knows what.

Schools are supposed to open in a couple of weeks.  Don't know what they're thinking...

Hope all are well and having a good day.

Jewel, 4 cubs, Shadow, and More - UPDATE July 20, 2020
20 July 2020
 Print Email
Jewel and her four cubs were a big hit with the group today. A great day with comfortable temperatures, bears, beauty, and action on this sunny summer day. We glimpsed 33-year-old Shadow in the woods but want to see more of her graying face.

The two loon babies are surviving and growing fast as their parents bring them minnow after minnow. In the picture taken a half second after the transfer to the chick, you can see the other parent streaking by just beyond the fish in search of another fish to keep up the stream of food.

At the eagles? nest, one eaglet that is nearly fully grown was perched near the nest and one of the parents was at the top of a big white pine nearby.

We were glad to see that red-osier dogwood berries survived the drought and were able to ripen with the recent rain.

Good morning everyone-  cloudy and humid here but no rain yet. Yesterday it sort of drizzled a couple times but at least it was only 80 or so.
ra- good to hear your ditch got mowed and he did a good job.  I've seen some butterflies around but so far i can't find any eggs. Hoping for lots of caterpillars soon.  I called my mulch guy and left a message last week to order another half load of mulch if he still had some. Haven't heard a word from him so far- seems to be his MO at least for me. But it's still annoying.

So good to see Jewel with 4 cubs- maybe she's just shedding but her butt does look different.  That picture is just adorable. All the pics in the update so beautiful.

cal- do you get the flu shot at the same time as your pneumonia shot?  I can understand Mahomes' concern about training camp- young people just haven't been smart about ykw. But--please- there just has to be football this fall. I'm hoping the coaches. trainers, etc. work with health professionals to get together and make a plan to keep everyone safe.

Time for breakfast here-   have a great day jewelies!
