Hi Jewelies! We are in day 9 of the heat wave in the 90's! Ugh! Strange thing happened a couple hours ago...the sun was shining brightly and it was raining cats and dogs! I thought it was hail but it was just huge raindrops. Rained for 10 minutes and then it was gone. At least it got dust off of everything. Governor said today that school will start Sept 8. I would have a hard time sending my kid to school with ykw still around. Crow said he wouldn't send his kid back. Glad we don't have to make that decision.

Cal, hope you and Jim had a nice anniversary and a good meal.  That was a nice song that Pearl listens to! I'm not familiar with it. I mostly only listen to 60's music on Sirius radio. Really cool update pics. I like the loon with the baby riding on its back! So cute.  Dr Rogers lives in a beautiful place. You asked about Boo...he is doing ok. He only goes outside to potty and sometimes he doesn't make it outside in time. He doesn't want me out of his sight. If I go outside he barks until I come back. He has always had separation anxiety but it seems to be worsening. Sucks to get old even for a dog. Yes, I do love Little Debbie cakes! Yummy! My sister always tells me I buy too many sweets. I'd gladly eat everything you bought for the barn gang! Yep, we got all the tree limbs and vines into big contractor size trash bags and put out for the trash man. Now we are waiting for the tree trimmer to call back and meet with us to get an estimate.

Lupe, we put our inground pool about 20 years ago. Before that we had an above ground for 5 years. Robin and her friends were in it all summer long. When it was time to replace the above ground liner, we decided instead to put in the inground thinking that one day we would have grandkids and what fun we would all have!  Well, that never happened! Lol! Every once in awhile we think we will fill it in and be done with it. If we ever do, I'll just make more flower beds!  Hope your sil's scan went well today. Glad Bertha is ok!

Ra, went to Walmart this morning and couldn't find the dog food! Had to ask a clerk! They had moved the pet section clear across the store. Still don't have beef baloney. They only have pork and chicken baloney! Yuck! Good idea to have someone mow that section for you! I know if I didn't have Crow, I would pay someone to mow my yard.

Have a nice evening and stay safe! :)

Good morning everyone- short post today- I'm sorry to tell you that I got word that my Duke passed away yesterday. So there is sadness in my heart- trying to remember all the good times and how fortunate I was to be able to share him with his other human family. He is with my Aunt Mo now.

Thanks everyone- in the times of such sadness there is incredible news.We met with sil's oncologist this morning and the PET scan she had yesterday showed her to be cancer free! We are so thankful. Checkups every 3 months from now on. She has a new doctor and all 3 of us liked him. cul

Daily Updates
Victor, Monograph, and Bruno - UPDATE July 9, 2020
09 July 2020
 Print Email
Mature males are being sighted now after the mating season, and their wounds reflect the determination of these courageous suitors. This is Victor who is probably 17-19 years old and has been a regular since 2006 when he was a young adult male. It looks like a claw narrowly missed his eye. He shows a number of scars and the fresh wounds of this year.Victor's eye wound
Victor's eye wound

Someone said they searched everywhere and could not find the monograph. That and about everything I?ve published can be found on bearstudy.org. Hover over PUBLICATIONS and then click on Published Papers. Scroll down and click on the highlighted titles to have the entire paper come up to read or download. Number 55 is the monograph: Rogers, L. L. 1987. Effects of food supply and kinship on social behavior, movements, and population dynamics of black bears in northeastern Minnesota. Wildlife Monograph 97. 72 pp.

Someone else asked what I think about Bruno roaming from Wisconsin to Missouri. I wish I knew what to think. From the picture I saw, if it is of him, he looks like a mature male. One of the reasons I am still trying to learn all I can about bears is that there is still a lot to learn. None of my study bears have roamed that far, so I?d like to know why as much as anyone. Without radio-collars, questions come up often that I can?t answer because the way to answer a lot of them would be to know more about the bear?s life and put the incident in context. Given the time of year that Bruno traveled so far, my first guess is that there is a bell-shaped curve on how far males travel, and Bruno is far out in a tail?possibly because he was looking for a mate and went in a direction where there were no bears and no mates. He might be the rare bear that introduces new genes into a bear population that he may find in southern Missouri. Ironically, some of the genes in that population came from northern Minnesota back in the 1960?s when dozens of bears from here were traded for turkeys from there. I?m glad Bruno has a following. It might help people that aren?t accustomed to seeing bears take a benevolent attitude toward the bear that is making history.

On another note, if anyone sent me an email on Sunday afternoon, Tuesday, or Wednesday, I didn?t get it and it just bounced back to the sender. My mail server was full. Linda fixed everything today in case you want to send the email now. A similar problem is that I often don?t get any notice of phone messages until many days after they are left.

Thank you for all you do.
