Den Cam Paper - UPDATE July 1, 2020
01 July 2020
 Print Email
The Den Cam Paper was published today in the journal ?Animals? as: ?Behavior in Free-living American Black Bear Dens: Parturition, Maternal Care, and Cub Behavior.?RC
RC
It will be publicly available online within a month. We feel very fortunate to have the paper published in this prestigious ?open access? journal that has nearly triple the ?journal impact factor? (2.323) than does the journal Ursus (0.800) that we submitted it to in 2013. ?Impact factors? are based on how many people read and cite a journal. Open access means that articles in ?Animals? are open to the public and are not restricted to subscribers as in private journals like Ursus. I would not have known about this journal ?Animals? that I believe is only a decade old except that co-author Professor Gordon Burghardt is aware of everything like that as an associate editor for many scientific journals. Thank you, Gordon!RCs cub
RCs cub

The histories of publication of this paper and an earlier one are bizarre but fortunate. The first one was ?Black bear reactions to venomous and non-venomous snakes in Eastern North America.? It was rejected by Ursus because, ?if bears in our study had lost fear of people, who?s to say they hadn?t also lost fear of snakes?? Co-author Burghardt suggested we try the journal Ethology, which has twice the impact factor of Ursus. There, it was enthusiastically accepted and is now being frequently cited by authors around the world. Next, we submitted the Den Cam paper to Ursus and had it rejected with no review. Bizarre. Especially so for a paper in which so much was new to science. Then we learned that the DNR, which serves as an advisor to the journal Ursus, was trying to prepare a case that I don?t publish. In court, when the DNR tried to present that case, it was sanctioned by the judge for illegally withholding from the court documents that showed how the DNR was preventing me from publishing. The judge dismissed publishing as an issue. In the end, we came out far ahead by having these papers rejected by Ursus and having them published in the higher impact journals.

After the excitement of learning that the paper had appeared in print, more excitement followed. 21-year-old RC made her first appearance of the year?with four cubs. We raced to the place where they were sighted. There, we saw RC reacting to 5-year-old Spanky. RC grumbled and took after him, shagging him out of there. RC looked relaxed after the chase (photo). So did her cubs high in trees. At one point, Spanky gave a view of his tongue and the inside of his mouth that I?d never seen before, but I couldn?t see anything that would explain his inability to extend his tongue like other bears do when ingesting food.

A long-horned wood boring beetle gave an extra good view of its ?horns.?

A great day with more fun to come when the Black Bear Field Courses begin on Sunday.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- looks to be a mostly clear day here. The update is very interesting. Gives me a new slant on the dnr.. We are so fortunate to have Brian and Chris at Decorah who have been so helpful to RRP and our bald eagles. They are dnr too. I've had a long running problem with the Environmental Protection Agency. they regulate hog confinements and by doing so do not protect my personal environment. But I won't get into that here.

In the picture of rc leaning on the tree stump I think she looks like she's placing an order for lunch. So cute.

Our trip to the appointment went well- screening posts before we entered the hospital and then all had masks on and people kept social distances. Also I continue to be impressed with Menards. Masks have always been required there and all employees wear masks. We got what we needed. I even got cat food- they didn't carry my usual brand but they had  high quality stuff. I didn't get the highest- Blue something but did get Iams. Just seems funny to get pet food and human food at menards.  lol  That will save a stop today at a different place.

On the agenda today is to go to a bigger grocery. I am really into cold brew tea bags and my local store doesn't carry them. I fill a quart jar with water and the tea bag in the morning and put it in the fridge and by lunch it's ready.  Also need to find some face cream- usually I get that at target but I don't really want to go there- too many people. If I can't find a replacement for what I usually use I may try to order it on line.

Senior hours at the grocery start at 8 AM so i'll be there shortly after. I have a list for sil also.

cal- do you have ditch lilies blooming. They are fabulous this year. Also last summer the county cleaned out a few ditches close to us and one bordering our land on the north . After they dig out the dirt they seed it with a mix of grass and black eyed susans and the flowers are blooming now. So wonderful!!  I have seen Monarchs here! YAY!
Caterpillars soon!

Have a great day jewelies!

hi jewelies it is 72 here 71 in the barn i turned it up to 71 in there yesterday. lots of raccoonies and babies rushing me throwing cookies everywhere and got the dog food in the pans filled up all them water bowl one tried to go back in with pearl with me pearl leaned down gave it the big old stinky eye. it took the hint too. for the first time in quite awhile i watched a little of the world news earlier. saying how good greece did on ykw and since it is running rapid here no one from the usa can visit there. cant tell me all that protesting no mask no social distancing screaming did not help spread this. some will try to say it did not but come on. too many uncaring people too. i did see a big helicopper that can carry tons and tons of water and move fast helping put out fires that was good. smokie is going to shanes this morning he is going to put in another alternator in him since believe the last one got shorted out due to loose wiring. jim is going to hook up his ac in the shop and we bought him the coil for it. shane said you are not paying for that but we did please fix smokie. smokie will be inside an ac shop for awhile. oh oh there goes griz now penny.

hi lupe in my ditch by the road not where jim mows but i have these tall stems with little blue flowers and lots of lazy susans and some liles too orange ones i canceled my dental cleaning nice to talk to abbie she said tanya quit she is pregnant with her 3rd child and is going to be a stay at home mom. i asked how dr westmans wife was doing and she said she keeps busy hard on her i asked if she still had sally that cat dr westman took in and she said oh yes she loves that cat took her to get fix and she is a he so he got tutored and she said she loved that i got him a bed and toys and food back then was very nice of me. she was looking for me at the service but that day it was raining sleet and ice very very bad out and could not go. i will get her a card.

Good morning everyone- ac off and windows open- 70- birds are singing and I hear a pheasant in the field nearby. Stray cat has been here the last 2 mornings. He gets along with my 2 so I don't mind him getting some food.
Yesterday I saw a little brown bird land in the front yard. He was apparently in the personal space of the swallows with the nest on that side of the house. Both swallows dive bombed that poor little guy until he managed to flee around the corner of the house. I'm glad the parents don't dive bomb me when i'm on that side of the house. lol They are fierce.

Grocery shopping went well- got my order and my sil's order and home by 9:30. I saw some people from our town who asked if I was going to the rec center. I told them yes and that I felt very safe there. Part of that is that when I go to walk in the morning there is rarely more than 1 or 2 other people there. On Wednesday there were 2 women there that I haven't seen in a couple of years. So good to visit with them.

Hard to believe that it's a holiday weekend- no parade or fireworks here. Our local grocery grills every saturday and we most always get a sandwich from them. That will be a picnic for us.

cal- that blue flower you talked about sounds like chicory- we have that too. I always wondered if you could make coffee out of it. I'll have to ask my niece- she's into that kind of thing.

At about 5:15 this morning I saw one of the Decorah adults fly to the holding pond and maybe catch a fish. So amazing their skills. Couldn't see for sure if one was caught or not. Such good camera work this season. And 2 babies with antennas and bands. I'm looking forward to watching their travels.

Have a great Friday jewelies!

Daily Updates
The Den Cam paper is out - UPDATE July 3, 2020
03 July 2020
 Print Email

The Den Cam paper can be seen in its entirety by clicking on the highlighted title in this link: Lynn L. Rogers, Linda McColley, Janet Dalton, Jim Stroner, Douglas Hajicek, Adam Partin and Gordon M. Burghardt. Behavior in Free-Living American Black Bear Dens: Parturition, Maternal Care, and Cub Behavior. Animals 2020, 10, 1123; doi:10,3390/ani10071123.Lily & Hope 4-24-2010
Lily & Hope 4-24-2010

You can also find it by going to www.bearstudy.org, hovering over Publications (in the menu bar along the top), then clicking on Published Papers in the drop down window that appears. As the newest paper on the list, it?s at the top (No. 139).

The 13-page paper is a summary of the discoveries that Lily Fans witnessed and helped compile during 2010-2013 in the dens of Lily and Jewel. The paper lists many topics that had never before been reported. Behaviors in dens has long been the least observed aspect of black bear life.

So little was known when we started that many believed black bear mothers slept through the birthing process and woke up in spring surprised they had cubs. When a famous wildlife expert stated that old belief on the David Letterman Show in February 2010, Lily Fans in 132 countries knew better after seeing Lily give birth to Hope and respond to her cries and needs with tender loving care.

Another old belief was that bears in dens do not urinate or defecate?a belief based on captive studies. Lily Fans saw Lily and Jewel back out the entrances of their dens or back into corners away from their nest to urinate and defecate. That is because wild mothers ingest the urine and feces of their cubs in addition to snow and icicles; and they accumulate dead cells from the digestive tract, all of which produce waste.

Lily and Hope in the den 3-17-2010
Lily and Hope in the den 3-17-2010
After having the paper rejected by the journal Ursus, I wanted to increase the sample size by studying more bears in more dens. I attempted to study Juliet and her cubs in 2014, and I applied for den cam permits in 2015 and 2019. However, in all cases, research limitations offered by the DNR hampered or would have hampered the studies in unacceptable ways. Seeing that it was unlikely we?d be able to expand the study, we submitted the paper for publication in ?Animals? and had it quickly accepted.

More is coming. One of the reasons we submitted this paper when we did is that world animal play expert Dr. Gordon Burghardt wants to cite this paper as background when he publishes a paper on the development of play in black bear cubs. Over the years, he and his graduate student have been analyzing videos of Lily and Jewel?s cubs in the dens that we all watched. I look forward to seeing what he develops.

In addition, there is a huge amount of data from which we would like to develop a paper on how mothers and cubs allocate their time in dens. That will be a major undertaking that I might put off while writing the book, although help from the right people and their graduate students could make that paper possible sooner.

Meanwhile, data collection on various topics continues to the extent possible.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone-  i'd say Dr. Rogers has a lot of work ahead of him- so many projects. Lily and Hope picture is just so heart warming.

Happy Fourth of July though it doesn't feel much like it. Hubby and I were talking about it yesterday and I remembered that I didn't always go to the parade in town because tennis was on at Wimbledon. I do miss tennis.

cal- I think some raccoonies visited here last night- bricks dug up in 2 places- yeesh! I also have to repot my Christmas cactus- they have dug in the pot so much that there is little dirt left.  That is on the agenda today. My new plantings of grass are finally long enough to need cutting. There isn't enough to get the mower out so i'll use hand clippers and trim it. I will seed a few small areas too that are sparse. Seems like this is good weather to plant grass- just have to keep it watered.

I'm headed out-- have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  Happy 4th of July!  I hope everyone is having a good day and are safe and healthy.  I just wanted to stop by and tell all of that you're important to me and I read here every day.  I've been hitting a lot of roadblocks for awhile and don't much good to talk about, so... I'm here to just say hi.  take care, my friends!

Good morning everyone- beautiful morning here- not a cloud to be seen.
cal- no one gets hurt with this cactus. It doesn't have pointy things on it. I repotted it yesterday- made 2 pots out of one and they got trashed again last night. I'll check on them later- just noticed they were knocked over when I fed my outside guys.

I also got my new grass hand trimmed and planted more in the bare spaces. I think this will be a long job! Especially since we haven't had rain lately. So I need to water every day. While I was taking a break on the back porch yesterday I watched our swallow flying in a small area over the grass west of the house. He was flying just about a foot or two high. Even though I couldn't see anything there must have been a hatch of a bug of some kind.  Yay for the swallow! I'm sure  the swallows are the reason I can sit on my porch without being "bugged." lol

ra- so good to hear from you. I agree with cal- we tell our gripes, problems, etc.  Lay it on us. Sometimes just sharing helps.

I hope we go for a drive today- am feeling a need to get "out of town." Well- maybe i'll just start with a second cup of coffee!
Have a great day jewelies!
