Hi Jewelies! It's looked like rain was coming all morning. So far none has materialized. Robin was hoping to float in the pool. Maybe later. Highs in the low 80's.

Cal, I have enjoyed reading Dr Rogers memories of Gerry. What a special bear and a special man. I wonder how he was able to climb up onto that limb in the tree.  Glad Missy is getting a new AC.  A tech from the HVAC company came Thursday and  did an annual inspection on our unit and changed the filter. Can't believe it's been a year since we got the new one!. How is Missy?   Are you allowed to ride your 4 wheeler on highways? Our state is now allowing them on any road that has a speed limit of 55. No Interstates. And now my city is allowing golf carts on city streets. I fear someone will get hurt. Seems everyday there is something that upsets me! :(   Yesterday afternoon Boo and I were walking around the pool when all of a sudden he got too close to the edge and fell into the pool! I jumped in to save him but he didn't need saving. He swam like a pro over to the steps. I did have to help him up the steps though. I have watch him better from now on. He needed a bath so I'm calling that a bath.

Lupe, iris is my younger sister's favorite flower. She has some really pretty ones. I have a few scattered around in my beds. Grandma had rows of them. There are a couple sparrow fledglings in my backyard. I keep checking to make sure no one has fallen into the pool, like Boo did. Still have no hummingbirds at my feeder. I don't know where they are this year. My older sis says she had one a few weeks ago but now it's gone.

Have a nice day! Stay safe!

hi jewelies it is 72 here humid too 70 in the barn not humid. 5 raccoonies 5 babies.

hi rues! scared me to read boo fell in the pool! happy he could swim and you were there to get him out. the older dogs need an extra eye on them! i would count that as a bath for sure how can you bath him? hose outside? griz has not had one for years since he use to get in the pond follow the 4 wheeler to the dogs pond that was a long long time ago he loves fan and ac all the dogs do. would never take penny and brownie out in the hay field or that pond. snake could very well be in there and not the good kind. i wonder how dr rogers got up in that limb too! no news on here till 5 am so i got it on the andy griffen show after this one that judge judy sorry but cant stand her she has been on forever my grandmother could not stand her either called her a know it all. so will have to change that channel to local news not that it is any better but weather is on. no we are not suppose to ride our 4 wheelers on the highway when we go this one way we do ride them on it for a very short distance and when we go see ron and dee we do for a short distance. no golf carts around here either. i know lots of cities do let them have them on the road. wow already a year for your new ac and furnace year is nothing anymore. i dont have any hummers either but been lots of day i forgot to hang out the feeders.

Good morning everyone- 68 here and sun is up. I opened windows and turned off the ac for now. We didn't get much rain here but just up the road they had flash flooding yesterday afternoon. didn't rain a drop here during that time.

rues- I can't believe boo fell in the pool; I really wish you would have gotten a video of you jumping in to save him!! He was very smart to just  know where the steps were. Swimming is good for our joints so he probably got some therapy out of it too.  I know what you mean about getting upset about stuff. I hardly watch the news anymore.  Sometimes I click on CNN for a short time and local news to get the weather. We have neighborhood kids who ride dirt bikes and 4wheelers by here sometimes and I always worry about someone getting hurt.

I'm looking forward to going on a little ride this morning- haven't been anywhere for 2 weeks or more. Well- just to the rec center and grocery store for us and sil.  I'm pleased that opening the rec center has not led to any outbreak of ykw here. We social distance in classes but I totally forget about that when socializing before and after class. The young people are better than me in those instances for which I am really grateful. I think my problem is that I have a difficult time remembering that i'm in the old person risk category.  lol

Have a great day jewelies!       Brooks Falls cams are up-   YAY!

Daily Updates
Jack is Back and Bear News from Sharon - UPDATE June 28, 2020
28 June 2020
 Print Email
Gray Jack
Gray Jack
Gray Ted
Gray Ted

The world seems right with the appearance of ultra-gentle One-eyed Jack at 11 PM Friday night, June 26?his 18th year of coming. Jack is a favorite of course participants. Jack was one-eyed from the time we first saw him during our first Black Bear Field Course in 2003, and he appeared this year in time for our first course in 2020 that begins Sunday, July 5. He came again this evening in good enough light to see the white hairs on his forehead at 22-26 years of age and how similar they are to the white hairs on Ted?s forehead at 23 years.

From the Bear Center comes Sharon?s Bear news June 28, 2020 that includes a picture of Lucky standing on a rock to reach the new feeder just outside the viewing windows. With that setup, viewers are seeing the bears from a new and awesome angle.

This week?s news includes: Ted eating in his pool, Tasha stands up, and fun with Lucky and Holly.

ITed and his bowl
Ted and his bowl
want to start with we never plan on what will happen with the bears, but Ted shared his plan with us. I asked the volunteer to just set Ted's bowl down so he could eat but as one of our volunteers approached him with his bowl, he gently took it from her hands, placed it on his paws and began to eat. After he had finished, it was reported by one of our Pond Chat moderators that he put the empty grape vine back in his bowl before leaving his tub.

A few days ago, we noticed a tick in Ted's right ear. It was reported to me and I had gone to get a glove to remove it. Ted took it upon himself to rub his ear against the cedar repeatedly and the tick was gone. He's such a great bear. He also had a short walkabout and returned casually to his den after his walk.

Lucky snacks, Holly watches
Lucky snacks, Holly watches
Lucky bear noticed that there was food in the new feeder and enjoyed the goodies while Holly watched. Holly enjoys climbing the Honey tree for treats. She has investigated the new feeder but hasn?t taken any treats from it. As time passes Holly and Tasha?s curiosity will take over and they too will find food rewards.

On Friday Lucky and Holly shared a peaceful moment of sitting together near the mound. They were waiting patiently for their dinner. They engaged in a bit of play and then ran off to the viewing area for dinner.

Tasha and Lucky
Tasha stands
Our Tasha bear stood up as she watched Holly in the cabin enclosure. Bears often stand up to get a better look at their surroundings and assess the danger. In the wild many people mistake a standing bear as an attack. In reality, the bear is merely checking out what it?s seeing and smelling. By standing the bear can get a better view and smell. The bear?s sense of smell is its greatest faculty and at this point it assesses the ?run in fear ?or ?all is well? factor. In Tasha's case, she was just checking to see what Holly was doing.

Holly and Lucky
Holly and Lucky
It is with honor that I had the privilege of hearing many stories about the special relationship Dr. Rogers had with his friend Gerry the bear. Gerry was humanely euthanized 1 week ago after a long debilitating illness. She was 31 years old and will always live in the hearts of people who knew her or had heard the many wonderful stories about her life.

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bear Keeper

Good morning everyone- 75 here and really yucky humid outside already. From the forecast I just saw it won't get any better this week but it is almost July so it is expected.
We went on a short ride yesterday after breakfast pizza which we ate in the car like we have done for years. It was a pleasant morning; I like to see how people have landscaped and what wildflowers are blooming in the ditches and what is blooming in people's yards. It was really funny at one place- all I could see was a huge planting of hollyhocks of many different colors and hubby said Wow! look at all the neat junk! Just shows where our ability to appreciate things differ.  lol At first I didn't even see the junk.

In the afternoon some friends dropped by to show us a dune buggy/4 wheeler thingie they had bought and worked on. They had called my hubby to find some parts. I knew hubby had spent some time on the phone with them. It turns out that hubby lent them some tools to get the part in and they wanted to return them. So they drove the vehicle out. It is road legal. Very neat homemade thing. Anyhow we stood outside and visited for a long time.

Not much going on here- both cats were here to eat this morning. I -probably won't see them again until it cools off late tonight. Highs in the 80 and 90 range all week. So glad I don't have to walk around in a fur coat in that weather. I've been watching Katmai bears along with NABC. I'm always so amazed that they can stand on the edge of that waterfall without getting swept over.
Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Jack, Spanky, a Mystery Bear, and Gulls - UPDATE June 29, 2020
29 June 2020
 Print Email
Mystery male
Mystery male
It feels good to have Jack back as his calm old self along with others that are coming in now after the mating season.

A bear we have yet to identify is the one pictured with a normal right ear and a nearly horizontal left ear and little else as identifying marks.

Someone asked about Shadow?s lastborn Spanky, who is now 5. He?s been erratically present and absent during the mating season and has now returned to the neighborhood with mating over. He is underweight with his difficulties ingesting food and keeping it in his mouth. Many residents have sympathy for him.

With bears getting most of the attention, a gull that is often overlooked shows the graceful way they glide white against the blue sky, smoothly circling and then descending on strong wings as they finally twist and turn, sometimes setting their wings vertically as they bank dramatically for sharp turns as they approach their destinations. Gulls are not as agile as hawks built for making sharp turns in pursuit of dodging birds. They are not as quick and agile as chickadees escaping through small openings between branches. But gulls have an appeal of their own.

Good morning everyone- 73 here already and humid. Very comfy here in the house. I sometimes wonder how we survived growing up without ac. I watched Ted yesterday and he was sleeping in the shade. I'm hoping for cooler weather for Ely.

cal- I hope pearl's nail trim goes okay without much trauma for anyone! I'm sure joe appreciates your barn. I know what you mean about ykw- cases in some counties here have been increasing for the last ten days.  Between hubby, sil and me we have 5 appointment in the next 8 days. No life threatening situations here but need to resolve some problems so we'll keep those appointments. Masks on for sure.

Well- I need to get out and do a bit of weeding. I want to mow too but it may rain before I can get thatdone.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Boy was it hot today! 90's all week long with only 10% chance of rain. We worked at Robin's today. Her horrible neighbor, the one that doesn't take care of his yard, has let trees and bushes become overgrown and now they are encroaching on Robin's property. Tree limbs and vines were laying on her garage roof. Tree limbs were hanging over his chain link fence on to her driveway. They also interfere with her driveway security camera. It took us a couple hours and several water breaks to get everything cut down. Crow used his chain saw on a pole that works get for hard to reach things. Next week a tree trimmer is coming to cut off limbs that are hanging on her house roof. Her house is 2 stories so we couldn't reach those! Crow and Robin have tried and tried to talk to the neighbor but he refuses to answer his door. Robin left a note on his door but never got a response. He did finally mow his front yard last week. His backyard grass is so tall that it  lays over now. Robin says she will be filing a lawsuit. I don't understand why anyone would let their property become so run down. >:(

Cal, hope Pearl had a good  nail trimming! I bet those raccoonie babies are so cute! This afternoon I saw a mom deer and her fawn across the street in the neighbor's yard! The fawn was so pretty. I worry about them getting hit by cars. Wish they wouldn't come into the city.  I was supposed to have my teeth cleaned in April but of course that was cancelled. I still haven't rescheduled. I'm still leery about going. Our county was doing so well but now we've had 27 cases in the last couple days. When will this ever end? :-\  In the past couple summers Molly and Boo got baths on the deck with the water hose. As they got older they had trouble climbing into the tub so baths didn't happen often. So sad about Spanky. :'( Hope the people in his area watch over him.

Lupe, I like to look at people's flower gardens and landscaping when we go out. Gives me ideas! I love hollyhocks! I used to have lots of them but I have none now.  I can remember no air conditioning! My bedroom was upstairs and man did it get hot! Thank goodness there was a tall basswood tree outside the bedroom window that did help cool the room off a little. And did it ever smell so good when the tree  was blooming! I loved that tree.

Have a nice evening! Stay safe!  :)

hi jewelies it is 73 and very very humid 70 in the barn ac was running out there i think elec bill going to huge but nice to be cool for all of us. 4 raccoonies 9 babies. griz is barking and barking yesterday morning jim opened his door and yelled at him go lay down behind that table NOW then i heard nothing came out said poor griz you hurt his feelings when jim came in the kitchen petted told griz did not mean to hurt your feelings. i best hurry up.

hi rues! oh that neighbor of robins sounds like a tim or a sanders. hope she files a lawsuit sure she knows a good lawyer! :) i ordered groceries online again yesterday afternoon i only had 20 min to order to get them ready at 7 am this morning sure i forgot something. my dental cleaning is for july 8th and gong to cancel today this ykw is spreading bad those young people that will not will a mask will not do social distancing if their lives were at risk bet they would then. they say how many got it how many died but not how many got over it. when we was kids our ac was the attic fan in the hallway which i dont understand now cause when i go up to my attic its so very hot up there. i dont how mice live up there i was putting out live traps but would have to do all them stairs and check the traps every hour i started putting out water for them and some food hoping to get them in the live traps when it gets cooler i think the 26th of june the longest day now every day will become a little shorter till winter  :)

Pearl did great yesterday! i had a time getting her halter on her before joe came. when i finally got on the right side of her and had it around i yelled out whoa trying to get my bluff on her so she would not move and she did not move it worked. she was perfect for joe afterward when i told jim i broke down crying cause she did good. her nails look wonderful.

Good morning everyone- let's just say it is warm and humid here already and will be for the next 10 days- oh my. Temp range will be from 70 at night to 90during the day. This will be my last post about the weather.

I put miracle gro on my annual containers yesterday and on the house plants I have left. There are only 2 left and they have been severely pruned though not by any human. lol I put out more grass seed yesterday too. The ground was kind of hard but I scratched around- watered- planted and then seeded and watered again. It is looking better. My goal is to be able to mow over that area by the end of summer.

I saw a Monarch yesterday- YAY- all our butterfly weed, butterfly bush and milkweed is in full bloom now. Come on Monarchs!!

rues- poor Robin- not fun to have a neighbor like that. Can she maybe find a relative or friend of that guy to maybe help her communicate with him? Wonder what happened to make him that way? Using a chain saw on a pole- hmm? Not getting a visual here.  I'll have to look up basswood tree- i'm not familiar with them. We had a screened in porch when I was young and we slept out there a lot on lounge chairs and a glider. Brought down mattresses too.

cal-so glad pearl did good- no stress for anyone. I still can't believe about ykw spreading again. I agree that young people just aren't taking it seriously. Being in a group of people for any period of time just not smart. I'm really satisfied with carrying on as we did before. Minimal trips just for essentials. however- we are going to the city for hubby's appointment today and we'll stop at menards- he gets some groceries there- and i'm going to get mulch to replace some the rain and the raccoonies dragged away. lol
Have a great day jewelies!
