cal... What a great win!!  And a beautiful horse!  Most of race horses don't as much of a blaze as Tiz the Law has... very nice!  No accidents, good clean race!  I'm glad a NY bred horse won.  We get afternoon storms almost every day in the summer... bad thing is... my satellite goes out every darn time it rains.  I called to ask them if it needs tweaking or something and they said it would cost me $99 or $8.99 a month for someone to come out.  I can do better than that... AT&T will LOSE $162.72 a month from me.  I'm dumping them... sick of them and the way they treat their customers.  I've already sold my stock, so I won't feel bad when I change.

Tales of Ted - UPDATE June 20, 2020
20 June 2020
 Print Email
I thought I?d celebrate this first day of summer by taking a break from questions and telling tales of Ted.Ted in Tub with dinner
Ted in tub with dinner

Actually, "HappyCub" tells it best, saying: "Happy Saturday It was a nice cool 56?F at 8 am. Ted was sleeping and had a little bunny enjoying breakfast behind his head. The bunny took off after realizing it was right next to a sleeping bear lol. Took him a bit though."

I love it that the snowshoe hare knows how to get in the bear enclosure and add such spice.

Then it was Ted relaxing HIS way. But another bear about his size was doing the same in the wild some years ago when I almost stepped on him. He opened his eyes but didn?t bolt. He was quite used to people and showed the confidence that I?ve found to come easiest with the biggest bears. He hardly moved. I backed away to let him sleep, which he did.

I don?t know if the bear keepers give Ted the comfort we see or if he knows how to find it himself, but the pictures of him at ease in his tub eating a good dinner had to be shared. They topped it off with a video of him exquisitely dining in a way that I have not found in the best restaurants. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCDHxsZ04og But there was more after the video ended. Ted finished his cluster of grapes and discarded the stem, but then did what any good bear should do. He picked up the stem and put it neatly in his bowl.

Yesterday, Donna spotted a beautiful Pink Prominent Moth at the WRI. Then, as if on cue, a neighbor who had seen the same beauty in her yard sent a picture that shows this colorful moth in exquisite detail.

Today, Donna spotted a painted turtle laying eggs after a welcome rain. The turtle was taking its chances, though, because its location was only a few feet from where a bear had dug up an earlier turtle nest and eaten the eggs. In fact, a young male named Bramble watched me lie down to take the picture today. I?ll keep an eye out and see what happens to these eggs. From the dirt on her face and shell, I suspect the turtle was anxious to lay her eggs and get back in the water to rinse the dirt off.

Thank you for all you do.

hi jewelies it is 68 here 70 in the barn 6 raccoonies 11 babies. i love the update ted is so cute in his tub eating his dinner. come across a sleeping bear i would let it sleep too go on back to sleep bear just me leaving. sun sure turns ted fur a different color. funny rabbit did not know that wall was ted but i am sure it knows all the bears there and the best one to lay next too would be ted. that moth is beautiful. so much beauty and wonder in nature. i hope that turtles eggs will be safe.

hi ra! yes Tiz sure had that blazed face just like my tuco and roxie did. jim stopped to see bc and debbie and watched it with them he said he told them im picking that tiz he looks likes tuco and roxie did. well jim that is what i said and i picked him too. i loved cuomo got to say riders up yes tiz from ny really great race. they sure got out there fast and watered him down after the race. jim has been aggravated with all pixie stuff on his tv the stopping then starting up i get that some on mine but not like his. like i said dont watch a ton of it right now will come fall and winter i hate to have someone comes here dogs and all big hassle and we had that man come out last year and he recabled the whole house to upgrade to this when raining hard i think lots of them go out if we change will be with our phone company same as our internet its underground so maybe not lose our tv with bad weather. but we dont care much for att either.

Good morning everyone- 64 here and very foggy and damp out. I haven't seen the weather yet but the past 2 days have been very wrong.   Friday 40% chance of scattered showers and we got almost 3 inches. Yesterday was the same and we didn't get a drop. Duke and I were glad. We got outside for a couple of hours- trimmed back the poppies and took out the supports I used for the peonies. Then we spent a lot of time on the porch. Cool enough most of the day.

The update was so fun- Ted holding his dinner on his paws. What a guy he is. And that moth- what colors! I wonder what nature meant for this moth to blend in with. I always thought that the colors in nature were meant for survival camouflage. Maybe it was an oops like the cardinal?

cal- your cable problems are a pain. We are so lucky to still have a locally owned and managed phone co-op and out electric is local too.I missed the horse race- waited on our eagles to fledge. No luck yet.
no plans for today- Duke will probably be here all day so we may take him on a little ride.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Happy Father's Day! We celebrated yesterday by getting take out from Red Lobster. They have dine in but we aren't ready to do that yet! Crow and Robin had crab legs. So gross! Crow ordered the meals on line and ordered extra cheddar bay biscuits. He screwed something up and we ended up with 2 dozen biscuits! Lol!

Cal, yes, Crow watched the race. He accidentally found it while channel surfing! He was happy that he found it because he didn't know it was on. I didn't watch it because I was at Robin's painting! On a whim, we painted her dining room. Her boss had gotten a can of grey paint for her office but it looked too dark under the fluorescent lights. So she brought the paint home. We decided to see how it looked in the dining room. With 3 windows and a patio door the color didn't look so dark. With the white trim it looks awesome. Never thought I would paint a room grey!  She was off work on Friday for West Virginia Day, ( state holiday) so she had a guy come and haul away her big king size 4 poster bed with mattress and the heaviest love seat on earth! He and his helper had a heck of a time getting that stuff down the stairway. It wouldn't have been so difficult if the stairs went straight down but they don't. They turn at the landing. There was no way we could get that furniture down the stairs ourselves. After the guy left we painted the bedroom. Then Friday evening a bed in a box and a bed frame were delivered. Been a busy couple days for us. This past week was so cloudy and cool. Not pool weather at all. Today near 90 but cloudy. Really nice update pics! How cute is that bunny with Ted! That looks like the president's hair on that moth! Lol!

Ra, there's been several people in the state that tested positive with ykw that had vacationed at Myrtle Beach. Now the governor says he might have to make some changes. I don't know if means shutting down the borders or what. There were more cases found at a couple more churches, too. Most people around here act like ykw is over. My sister is livid with our cable co. Her internet and phone went out on Friday and they can't get anyone there until June 30! Luckily she has tv and a cell phone. I don't know what is wrong with Suddenlink but they need to get their act together. Crow called them to see if we could get some credit for all that outage  we had with our cable for 3  months. They told him no because we were able to get some channels!  >:( How's the new fridge doing?

Lupe, yay, you have Duke again! Hope he has a fun car ride! Molly always loved going for a ride in the truck. I had to sit in the middle because she had to sit by the window! What a brat! She was so spoiled. You got a lot of rain. Can't believe I'm saying this but with all the rain we have had, we need rain now! It keeps going around us. I hate to see next month's water bill. But plants need water. I have a rain barrel out by the tomato plants and it's almost empty. Hope to get rain on Tuesday.

Have a nice day! Stay safe!

Good morning everyone- cool here and raining. A thunderstorm went through already and from the radar more is to come. cal- duke stayed again last night. his mom got home late and called. She was tired and wanted us to keep him one more night. No problem. She hadn't travelled in a long time so it was probably pretty stressful. So he'll go home after she comes home from work today.
Duke fell out of bed this morning about 2 AM. He's done that before. Scares me! But he has always been fine after. It was already lightening out so I put the leash on him and took him out to pee. Hubby suggested I leave him on the floor so I tried it but I heard him walking around so I got up too. Of course I've been awake since 2 but he got on his pillow and slept through the storm. lol
rues- I wouldn't have any problem eating those cheddar bay biscuits- yum. I now what you mean by how can it get so dry. We had the same thing happen here. After almost 3" of rain it dried up in 9 days. Without rain and no dew overnight  and several days of wind it just got super dry.

ra- I know what you mean by mowing the ditch. Hubby mows it here but can't use my ztr. He doesn't feel safe on it on a hill. I used to push mow it before we got riders. Those were not the days? lol

Empty nest in Decorah this morning- sigh!

Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Touching Memories Relived - UPDATE June 22, 2020
22 June 2020
 Print Email
The last couple days brought back touching memories of my best days with bears, making me again thankful for the bears that accepted me and revealed their lives to me in ways that would not be possible in any other way.

Two evenings ago, I saw a bear in the distance in the fading light and wondered who it was. It looked big enough to be a male, and I spoke to it to see how it responded as a first clue to who it might be. ?Come bear,? I said gently. It immediately came straight toward me with its eyes on me, its ears toward me, moving with confidence. It was a bear who knew me. Two feet away, I offered it food. It sniffed my hand, rejected to food, and looked me in the eyes. Unusual. I offered the food again. Same reaction. Eventually, it accepted food, and I put it on the ground. Walked behind it and realized that it was no male that I could identify. It was a female, and the looks were wondering why we didn?t touch noses like we began doing when she was a newborn cub in her natal den back in 2005. I came back in front of her and complied, feeling wonderful that she preferred that greeting and closeness over food. It also explained her confident fast walk to me. She knew my voice. I stroked her down the back, grateful for everything about her.

Ursula coming with confidence
Ursula coming with confidence

Memories continued today. I saw another bear I didn?t recognize. She had a light muzzle quite a lot like Lily?s but no white dot and seemed too small to be her. Yet she knew me and was immediately comfortable. I guessed it was Faith that I had all but given up for dead?except for a shred of hope that she had escaped hunters in the nearly roadless area she had selected for her distant territory. I believe its been some 4 years since I?ve seen her or heard of her being seen. She looked too small for a 9-year-old, but her mammaries were those of a mother who had more than one litter. Given the fact that Faith had David and Allen in 2015, she?s had time for two more litters by now, and she was on schedule to have just gone through family breakup in the last month. It was interesting that she gave up the nutrition available in this community that has been feeding bears since 1961 and chose a life of less than optimal nutrition. But now, she was back, for a bit at least, bulking up for a winter of giving birth and making enough milk for her next litter to get a good start.

Faith at 9 years old
Faith at 9 years old

Then I saw Lily for the first time this year. She did her usual. She ignored me. She showed no fear but had her own agenda. She was sniffing the ground and leaves and branches. She was listening intently in every direction but toward me. Then she walked on, caring nothing about food and reuniting. I followed. It was like a decade ago. I was walking 5-10 feet behind her, an 81-year-old trying to duck under obstacles and keep firm footing on rocks and uneven ground. She wasn?t traveling to a destination, she was meandering and exploring more like she was looking for another bear (a preferred mate?) or learning who was around. Then she got on a big downed tree and walked the length of it while I looked for a way to keep up without getting on the fallen tree with her. She disappeared, leaving me again feeling grateful for our history and continued recognition and trust. The fact that she ignores me is what allowed the team and I to learn so much from her.

Lily on a mission with me in tow
Lily on a mission with me in tow

An interesting side bit of information is how she has refuted so many old beliefs about how a bear that has lost so much fear of humans behaves. She does not come up to people for food. She has not generated a single nuisance bear complaint in her entire 13 years of life. She has never shown aggression toward people. Never attacked anyone. She just goes about her life as if people are inconsequential. This could scare people who fear bears, but she herself is not a danger. When she was going through the woods today with me crunching sticks to keep up as she would stop to listen ahead, she never so much as glanced at me. Her attention was fully on her surroundings, the unknowns, and what might be ahead. I would think she?d be irritated that I was sometimes rustling when she wanted to hear. But she never showed it. Just like the old days.

Thank you, Lily. Thank you, bears.

And thank you all for all you do.

Good morning everyone- wow- I wish I could have walked in Dr. Rogers shoes on that adventure. So nea to have encounters like that. Just wow!

60 here and cal- 18 racoonies to feed. You have your own herd. Wonder if they will all return after family break up?

Duke went home yesterday around dinner time. His Mom has no other travel plans as yet. I feel that we all still need to move forward with caution. And i'm so glad we live in the country where we can spend time outside. Today's plan is to continue to thin out the irises. They are so thick in places I just had to cut the roots with my shovel. I'll see if I can get at least one bed done today.

I forgot to tell you all about a drive-by visit on sunday. Out niece called to ask if she could bring by her Mom and her son. Her Mom (another of my  sil) is 94 and still lives by herself in an apartment duplex on the campus of our local nursing home. Her daughter does the primary care and works full time.  So they drove out and we visited a bit from the porch to the driveway. Another first for us.

At our local rec center there was a volleyball camp. It started yesterday and there were precautions taken. All the kids entered directly into the gym from outside.  So even though we had senior strength class there was no mixing of the age groups. Someone gave a lot of thought to logistics and I really appreciated that.

I'd best get moving- have a great day jewelies and everyone who reads here!
