Good morning everyone- 56 here and a slight breeze with a few clouds. I didn't watch the whole video yet but will go back to it later. That little cub is just darling- sweet and innocent. I also watched Mom Decorah bring fish in this morning- those babies are getting pretty good at feeding themselves. Pretty soon a fledge will happen.

Yesterday I divided iris again- seems I just did that earlier in the spring. I had lots that didn't bloom so that means they are too crowded. After I trimmed the leaves off I had 2 buckets full to put in the ditch. Thatwas in the morning after I did my sil's grocery shopping. Also went to our local bakery where they have local produce for sale. I got a huge head of butter lettuce and shared with my sil. I had a huge salad for lunch and that lettuce was so good- tender and yummy.

In the afternoon I worked on cleaning the back porch. I scrubbed the vinyl and used the hose to rinse it and then swept and scrubbed the floor. The racoons and the birds had made a mess. Clean all the furniture off too. since it was warm and dry it all dried up quickly. I ran out of dog food so we decided to not feed the racoons any more. They really made a mess out of my flower containers on the back porch. I salvaged what i could but may have to buy some plants to fill in.  I'll miss seeing them.

cal- the dog shame??? that is a fish- right? lol
Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! No ac needed today! In fact it was chilly! Looked like rain all day but it never got here. All around us got up to 2 inches. We need some rain and none is expected all week. Guess that's why there are water hoses!

Cal, I had it in my head that your pool was ok but the cover was shredded! My memory isn't so good anymore! Downtown announced the other day that the August Homecoming was cancelled so they decided to have a July 4th fireworks display instead. They set off the fireworks from the top of a hill where a Civil War fort was. Lots of places all over town where you can see them. So social distancing shouldn't be a problem. Then on tonight's news they showed a church group having an outside gathering at Point Park. That's the park on the river with the white gazebo that floods a lot! No social distancing or mask wearing at all! Little kids there, too. Apparently they hadn't heard that a church in the southern part of the state had to close because 17 members came down with ykw! Robin found 6 tiny kittens behind her garage yesterday. Hopefully we can get them when they get a little older and take then to the Humane Society. Glad you and Jim got to go for a ride! Bet that was fun for both of you! You need to have some fun once in awhile! Nice people that raised the baby birds! That would be a hard job! Glad the bear center opened up!

Lupe, you've been very busy cleaning and dividing plants! Maybe won't have to clean as much if the raccoons don't visit! How lucky you are that you live close enough to go see the bears! Our senior center is having yoga classes in their parking lot early in the morning, a couple times a week. They still haven't opened up the center. Their other exercise classes are still on Zoom. My sis never did join. I keep saying I need to do some kind of exercise but I keep putting it off! Crow rides my exercise bike 5 times a week. He rides almost 9 miles each time.

Have a nice evening! Stay safe! :)

Good morning everyone- 60 here and quite comfortable with breezy conditions this afternoon.
ruse- oh how I wish you could get the kittens and mom too. What a bummer. I've spent the last 30 plus years trying to spread the word about spay/neuter and it's so frustrating. I don't think our senior center is open yet. They traditionally serve family style and have for years but apparently that is going to change to waiting in line to be served. Good for disease control but there will have to be people available to help those who can't walk holding a tray. I have seen the benefit of thinning out plants this year. I have 2 gaillardias blooming where I haven't seen in years. They apparently survived being smothered but just didn't have enough sun to bloom. Am enjoying their red/yellow blooms.

Well- I am planning to tackle a hard project today. I had the timing all set to begin at daylight then realized today is a walk/ class day. But they will be over by 9 AM and i'll start then. It's supposed to get hot and humid again starting on Wednesday so I have 2 days to finish. North of the house along the road I need to get rid of wild grape vine and also cut off little trees and treat the stumps.  Hard work on a hillside but it only needs done once in a blue moon. Can't remember the last time I did this. May need to mow too.
cal- you need to binge watch all the stuff you recorded-lol. No riots here last night! At least no plants were dug up  but my pet safe thingie was moved on the table. That is a first.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  We're getting a break from summer today!  Yay!  It's so nice and cool out!  Our town has a monument on Main Street for a confederate soldier and an old cannon along with it.  There's been protesters around it for the past few days.  I wish they would leave the historical monuments alone.  It's been there since 1910.  Today there were three people there waving their confederate flags when I went by... probably descendants of soldiers who fought in the war.  Showed them on the news already today.

cal... I'm wondering what that "pet safe thingie" is, too!  I'm still feeding the animals behind my house.  Yesterday I watched a buck in velvet for almost an hour... he was just browsing the bushes right behind my house.  Looked good and healthy.  So far, I've seen a cat eating bread, birds, crows, and deer.  today I threw some more watermelon rinds out for them.

lupine...Glad you didn't have a riot last night!  I was thinking the same as cal... that they would tear stuff up if no food.  You should plan a trip down here... I have lots and lots of plants that need to be divided, but nowhere to put them when I do.  Not a chore I like to do either... so it doesn't get done.

rues... Good for Crow riding your exercise bike!  Mine is covered with my granddaughters stuff from college.  Good excuse, right?  lol  I don't think I'll be getting a goat any time soon.  We had some in MI and I'll just say... they're not my favorite animal.  We had "issues".  lol  My daughter got her new fridge today... the guys who delivered it but a dent in the side of it!!  It's that black cloud thing, I think.  they said they were going to give her 10% off... we'll see.  I told her I knew who to contact at Lowes if she doesn't get it.   :-\

joho... Hope you and Joan are doing ok.  Thinking of you...

Hope all Jewelies are safe.  Hi to all.

Chloe continues to be popular. Her brother Carter was showing interest, but she just brushed him off. Rusty was in the area but not rushing in. Carter went to him and playfully laid a paw on his back a gave a gentle play bite. We couldn?t believe it?two competitors playing. They stood up, still quiet. Then suddenly the action turned loud and lightning fast. Serious. Carter sprinted off with Rusty fast behind. Chloe saw them leave and didn?t want to be left behind. She hurried after them?not to be seen again last evening.

Good morning everyone- 60 here and sunny; checked on Ted- sleeping away. Decorah babies ready for food this morning- they aure are getting active- hopping about.
cal and ra- that pet safe thingie is designed to keep a dog in the yard. I don't have a clue how it works. I just plug it in on the back porch. Then you are suppose to put a special collar that comes with it on your dog. Then if the dog steps outside the area you've programmed in he gets a warning. Well- as you all know- I have no dog. The friend who lent me this thing used it on her dog but she got a different one. I'm using it to get rid of moles!! She said she's never had a problem with moles and her neighbor has a lot of them. She figured it may be because of the pet safe thingie. So I thought i'd give it a try. At first I was afraid it might affect the cats but they have no problem with it. The verdict is still out on whether it works on the moles.

I spent some time yesterday trying to fix the damage on my house plants that are outside now and containers of annuals that the racoons tried to rearrange. Trimmed back the house plants. The racoons trimmed back my Christmas cactus but I think it will survive. I may have to scout the greenhouse to fill in here and there. It's getting late in the season but I may find something.

Today I plan to finish  the hillside north of the house. I got a good start yesterday- it was cool and breezy in the morning. After walking and class I got out and got a couple hours in. 2 or 3 or 4 more hours this morning ought to get it done. Besides the small trees I found some wild grape vine coming up in places that I thought were cleaned out. I cut them all back and then sprayed round up on what was left. It's hard walking but I was totally surprised that the ditch was dry- we'd just had almost 3 inches of rain last week but it all soaked in. I'm going to wear long sleeves today- got into some itchy stuff yesterday- had to use baking soda to stop the itch- fine today- no rash. Hubby said maybe some itchweed- I looked it up but couldn't say if that's what did it.
Need to get going.
Have a great day jewelies!

hi lupe! so little rioting going on. i googled pets safe thingie and lupe it talked about that fence deal! now i know that was right! if its like an invisable fence dog has to wear the collar goes near it gets a warning. moles wear little collars?  :) my ex bil had one for his doberman at dads he put the collar on himself to see how much of a shock had it turned on low while he was walking down the long driveway dad turned it up to high!  :)

Here is the latest Bear News from Sharon Herrell, Sr. BearKeeper at the NABC!

June 14, 2020 Bear News

First, on behalf of Ted, Lucky, Holly & Tasha, I want to thank all who voted for the pinatas and their favorite bear; in my mind they are all favorites. We received 1,312 votes, for total of $6,560! We so appreciate all of our bear fans. All of these donations will go towards bear care and food.

I've included a few photos of the bears eating their goodies. It's always so exciting for the bears, but the bear care staff enjoy it too. If you tuned in late this is how the votes went:
Ted received the strawberry, Lucky received the watermelon, Tasha received the ice cream cone and the Holly bear got the star. I also want to thank the group working behind the scenes to make this one of the best half birthdays ever!

Now for this week?s bear news?

This past week has been a hot one. Ted enjoyed many showers given to him by the bear educators and the interns. Tasha also had showers but with Tasha it?s more about play with water than just cooling off. In a rare move, Holly joined in the fun and was playing in her tub and enjoying water play. Tasha and Ted usually love to be gently sprayed but Holly, not so much, so as the chance happens to get Holly engaged in water play, I always take it as it continues to bond us.

Lucky caused some excitement as folks on the mound cam watched him dismantle the work Low Impact had done on some sewer pipes. We had advised them to bury them deep or the bears would definitely get into their work. True to word, Lucky and Holly both had a paw in some or all of the destruction. Low Impact arrived the next day and repaired the pipes and added large rocks on top. Lucky hasn't bothered them since. It does allow for great picture opportunities on the mound.

Tasha and Holly are both in estrus and are showing interest and spending time with Lucky. Holly of course can be out with him in the big enclosure, but Tasha can't due to his misgivings towards her. Estrus usually last throughout the month of June with Holly going in first and 10 days to 2 weeks later Tasha, by the end of June all are exhausted with the exception of Lucky.

The wild bears still come to within 8 feet or so from the fence and cause the four bears inside the enclosure some frustration. The interns have learned how to scare a bear away with a noisy black plastic bag. Using the large black plastic bags to scare them away works well and it?s something Dr. Rogers has said that gets bears away from an area without harming them. We used that same technique last year on the two bears that hung around the trail head area.

The new buds are giving way to blossoms on the dogwood. Holly and Tasha enjoy the blossoms and the white berries that form soon after. Tasha was eating red maples seeds also. Ted is still enjoying the tender growth of rye on the mound when he has opportunity.

Even though we have been closed, the bears have been active and busy giving their wonderful fans many things to laugh and talk about.

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bearkeeper

Good morning everyone- 60 here and sunny. The weather has been great. AC has been off for more than a week now but humidity returns Friday along with rain chances.  I got my hillside finished yesterday. My only failure was not getting a tree in the ditch sawed down. There were power lines above it and eventually would have caused a problem. Unfortunately it was on a really steep part and I couldn't get a good angle to use my saw. However I did cut down and treat 2 huge thistles growing close by. Yay!

When i finished I still had time before lunch to mow so I started. Then my speedy had a fit. Screeching so I knew it was a belt. I shut down the mower deck right away and was going to drive it to where hubby was but it wouldn't move.  Went to hubby- he was doing his project. Said use his mower. Well- going from a ztr back to one with a steering wheel took some adjusting on my part. Later when hubby checked speedy he saw a stick had wedged in and caused a belt to slip off. The stick was really small but just hit the right (or wrong) angle to dislodge the belt. Hubby got the belt back on and I finished a bit of trimming and put him away.

Today after class i'm going to see if I can get a few annuals to fill in where my container got trashed. some greenhouses are closed already so I called around yesterday to find one that still had annuals.  Then this afternoon I need to start my grass seed project  (once again)in the places where they dug for the well. The rain this weekend is spotty and hopefully not hard enough to wash seed into little clumps like the last time.

Have a great day jewelies!
