June 14, 2020 Bear News
First, on behalf of Ted, Lucky, Holly & Tasha, I want to thank all who voted for the pinatas and their favorite bear; in my mind they are all favorites. We received 1,312 votes, for total of $6,560! We so appreciate all of our bear fans. All of these donations will go towards bear care and food.
I've included a few photos of the bears eating their goodies. It's always so exciting for the bears, but the bear care staff enjoy it too. If you tuned in late this is how the votes went:
Ted received the strawberry, Lucky received the watermelon, Tasha received the ice cream cone and the Holly bear got the star. I also want to thank the group working behind the scenes to make this one of the best half birthdays ever!
Now for this week?s bear news?
This past week has been a hot one. Ted enjoyed many showers given to him by the bear educators and the interns. Tasha also had showers but with Tasha it?s more about play with water than just cooling off. In a rare move, Holly joined in the fun and was playing in her tub and enjoying water play. Tasha and Ted usually love to be gently sprayed but Holly, not so much, so as the chance happens to get Holly engaged in water play, I always take it as it continues to bond us.
Lucky caused some excitement as folks on the mound cam watched him dismantle the work Low Impact had done on some sewer pipes. We had advised them to bury them deep or the bears would definitely get into their work. True to word, Lucky and Holly both had a paw in some or all of the destruction. Low Impact arrived the next day and repaired the pipes and added large rocks on top. Lucky hasn't bothered them since. It does allow for great picture opportunities on the mound.
Tasha and Holly are both in estrus and are showing interest and spending time with Lucky. Holly of course can be out with him in the big enclosure, but Tasha can't due to his misgivings towards her. Estrus usually last throughout the month of June with Holly going in first and 10 days to 2 weeks later Tasha, by the end of June all are exhausted with the exception of Lucky.
The wild bears still come to within 8 feet or so from the fence and cause the four bears inside the enclosure some frustration. The interns have learned how to scare a bear away with a noisy black plastic bag. Using the large black plastic bags to scare them away works well and it?s something Dr. Rogers has said that gets bears away from an area without harming them. We used that same technique last year on the two bears that hung around the trail head area.
The new buds are giving way to blossoms on the dogwood. Holly and Tasha enjoy the blossoms and the white berries that form soon after. Tasha was eating red maples seeds also. Ted is still enjoying the tender growth of rye on the mound when he has opportunity.
Even though we have been closed, the bears have been active and busy giving their wonderful fans many things to laugh and talk about.
Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bearkeeper
