Hi Jewelies!  Hot,hot, hot here.  Up to 90 yesterday... and muggy.  Guess it's time for summer, but wishing it wasn't so hot!  I went to Lowe's and bought a side by side fridge last week.  Got home and noticed that the model number was wrong on my receipt... they had told me it was in stock, but when I called them and checked, the one in stock was 36" and I need 33".  Had to cancel that order and redo it, now this one is not in stock and I won't get it until this Friday.  This has been such so hard to deal with!  I had a whole home surge protector installed this past week, $6.50 a month to the power company, but it's supposed to protect the whole house 98% of the time.  Makes me feel a little better having it.

cal... I heard on the news that people are dropping off pets on the side of the road more these days, because of ykw.  It's just not right for people to do that!  Is Jim feeling better today?  Hope so!

lupine... Love hearing about your gardening!  I wish it wasn't so hot here now, hard to get out and  enjoy it.  I keep my grass cut, but don't do any more than I absolutely have to with the flowers.

rues... Your trip with your sister sounds like fun!  Your yearly trip to the cemetery!  I remember you talking about it.  And, to get to go to Dairy Queen, too!  I'm jealous!  Glad Crow didn't have a lot of trouble with his dental work.

I emailed obsver and asked if she was ok.  We hadn't heard how she was doing through our trying times, and I was worried about her.  Got a nice email response... glad she's doing ok.

I thought today was a holiday... my mailman just left stuff in my box!!  Hmm...

Hi to everyone!  Have a good day!

Life in the Heat - UPDATE May 25, 2020
25 May 2020
 Print Email
Bears are being pampered in the heat at the Bear Center as Sharon shows us with words and with pictures from her and "Happycub".

Bear News from Sharon:

Happy Memorial Day weekend! I wish you all a safe and socially distanced weekend.

Lucky
Lucky
Another week has passed, and Holly decided it was her turn to showcase her talents on Thursday evening and pushed over a tree when she was coming down from the cub tree. The tree that fell was rotten at the base. It was the tree the bears have used at one time or another to get up and down the cub tree. It will be missed I'm sure, but we do have plans to bring around cut up portions for Ted.

Ted takes a morning dip

Scott arrived after I had Lucky and Holly in their pens. Judy also came to help. Scott cut the tree off the fence line while Cindy (Scott's wife) me and Judy focused flashlights. We did a temporary but important fence fix, turned the e-fence back on. The bears stayed in for the night. Thank you to all our Moderators for their skills and fast notifications to us.

As a side note?I was told that some of the Pond Chatters were sure Lucky (who often gets blamed for tree removal) had notified his ?lawyer?, I assured him he wasn't to blame. J

ITasha in Tub

n other news, we attached the hoses and got the water running up by the bear pens and Tasha had her first water play activity. She very much enjoyed the play, actually so did I. Play is important for bonding and reuniting voices of covered faces while working with bears, staff and Bear Educators. We gave Ted a shower too although he wasn't as keen to it as Tasha was. We filled his tub and he sat in it soaking his feet and cooling off.

Lucky?s true talent of ?sleeping in? was evident on Saturday morning. At first, we couldn't find him, but our second try produced a big bear sleeping below the old dug den. He didn't want to budge. When he didn't acknowledge us by lifting his head or paw, I went in to see if he was ok. He was fine, he finally moved his head but didn't want to get up, Thus, he and Holly remained out and we decided to bring them in later. We have to always remember we are on bear time!

This coming week will be busy so stay tuned. The bears will be in their personal enclosures Monday night so work can be done on the pond and a few fence posts.

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bearkeeper

Out the window, grass and leaves are growing so fast that it almost looks like summer. Juneberry bushes, pincherries, and blueberries are in full blossom with killing frosts unlikely. A tri-colored bumblebee flew in, adding color and helping to celebrate spring.

Somehow, the porch was popular today. The first snowshoe hare I?ve seen here in months came right up on the porch and stood at attention to show me its new summer coat. Next, a woodchuck picked the porch to lie spread out in the shade to cool off. On the railing, a red squirrel did the same as he relaxed and took his share of the bears? sunflower seed hearts.

Seeing a woodchuck prefer fresh dandelion greens over what I was offering today made me hungry for a good romaine salad with thousand island dressing. Bear action has been slow since green-up started as bears were also probably hungry for salad. They like dandelion greens, too, along with the flower itself.

Then I got a call at 7:53 PM?Jewel has four cubs! Is this a contest between Lily and Jewel?

A nice day with a brief shower.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 64 here and sun is up- a few clouds but nice and cool. So excited to see Jewel has been spotted with 4 cubs. Wow!! I don't remember if she was ever spotted last summer- don't think so.

yesterday was really warm and humid- I went out early to get a couple places done with landscape fabric and mulch. Also I mixed peat moss with grass seed and spread it over area where well was dug and left bare spots. I didn't water it in because we were supposed to get rain. Well- guess what- no rain so I have to go out this morning and drag the hose out. I finished yesterday about 11:30 but it was super hot- had planned to go back out after lunch but quit. When I get overheated I get a headache and one was starting so I just read and watched cams in the afternoon.

ra- I can't believe your luck with the fridge. Glad you caught it before they were hauling it in your door! I know what you mean when it gets so hot. I just keep up with the basic weeding and mowing by the time June comes along. I've really enjoyed this spring.

Mom racoon was already here this morning- so I think i'll get out soon and water in the grass seed. I never have much luck but I keep trying.  lol

Have a greatday jewelies!

Hi ev1 one,  Good to hear we are ok this morning. Joan not too good.  Shaking and leg hurting bad.  Can't eat her Jimmy dean sandwich, and already had her insulin shot.   On puter printing recipes.
Oh no. Now back in bed with pain.  Thinks too much insulin, and can't sit on toilet due to pain.
Want to get out today.  GOT TO.  Cabin fever setting in. Yikes!!!!!  Going to Sorrowful Mother's Shrine out in Norwalk Ohio area if we can.  Nice ride at least, and maybe a nice stroll through parklike trails with stations of the cross and a tiny capel for prayers.
Sounds like she is going to make the effort.  She is getting dressed and will be fighting through the pain right now.  So I will help her and cul.
God Bless I think some emails may be getting through. Are they?

Good morning everyone- 68 here and partly cloudy- humid already. Yesterday I went out after lunch to mow. I had just gotten done and it started to rain. In the morning I
finished with the last 3 bags of mulch and weeding. It's amazing how tall a dandelion can grow to reach the sun when growing in the middle of a tall poppy plant. It was just starting to bloom and I couldn't figure out how I got a yellow poppy! On closer inspection the thing was a weed- I had a difficult time following it to the ground and didn't get the root so I imagine it will grow back at some point. Geez!

cal- where are you? I watched ted getting fed yesterday- I think the egg they give him is raw. He really liked it.
johoward- hope you got a ride in yesterday. Most of our restrictions are lifted but with social distancing, etc. but old people like me should stay home yet. But after Friday we may plan some outings.

Have a great day jewelies.

hi lupe! it is i dont know temp but humid already here 70 in the barn ac set on 70. 3 raccoonies i went back to the barn yesterday went out like 6 and a baby raccoonie was eating dog food saw me oh oh ran back in the hidey hole in that hay. soon it will know i am the food person im okay. i stayed out there pretty late  at 3 am i let the dogs out then went straight to the barn no treats just seeing if all okay and raccoon following me all over where it the treat pearl wanted a treat did my barn chores griz barking wanting back in came in let the dogs back in went back to my extra cool bedroom and watch the news on my ipad then fed all the dogs all the cats mom cats went back to the barn treats this time now i finally got in here. need to mow but it stormed again during the night lake everywhere more rain tomorrow cant mow in this. i will be wearing my mask for a long time jim said this guy in paint test postive for it and they had sent this woman up there to work and now she has it. so taking temp doesnt really mean a whole lot cause later that day can have one and have it. so mad at the fools at the ozarks mo use to not be on the list of rising cases but i saw on the news this morning we are now.  looks like it will take a vaccine to fix this and i dont think i want to be one of the first one to get that either. so stay at home wear a mask when i go out. mostly what i do anyway tired of going to walmart with all the rules hard to walk the store and one way lanes and the mask does get so hot so really nice getting online groceries yesterday man so nice loaded it all up i watched from my seat got heavy cat litter lots of it big sack of dog food cases of can cat food and dog food all kinds of stuff. yick ted a raw egg well maybe that is why his coat looks so good.

hi joho! maybe you can go for a little ride today maybe ride your bike a little i know not the same but still getting out. just be safe!!

Hi alice! how are you doing?

Started out for Bellevue chapel, but had to abort due to leg pain.  I think it is sciatica, because it comes every morning, but usually goes away after a few hours.  Yesterday it did not.  Rough day until about 6pm.
We did go out then to very happily get Joan's new fob and member card from her United Polish Club Ladies Auxiliary.
It was their first day open.  Lots of rules and taped off tables for social distancing.  Very not crowded and careful. The three cooks and us were the only ones with masks. Felt safe as we enjoyed the daily special of taco salad and a Bud Light.  They did not have any non-alcoholic beer.
Went to Rural King on way home for Bear Creek soups.  Joan waited in car while I went into store where I found carts with bleach spray and towels on way in.  Also lots of tape on floor for spacing.  Sneeze shield at register, and most everyone with masks on.  Felt a little less safe than Polish Club, but I washed everything with disinfectant.   Hope I will be OK.  Debbie is shopping for us this evening at Discount Drugmart. She might not find these soups Joan wanted at Drugmart, and I did not want her running all over.  Joan waking now. So I will go get her coffee started. CUL God Bless
Wish I could spray those poor eagles.  Nature is so harsh sometimes.  Oh there goes the astronauts for take off today on Spaceex ship on TV CNBC.

Daily Updates
Ted, Shadow, and More - UPDATE May 27, 2020
27 May 2020
 Print Email
I don?t know who arranged Ted?s big tub next to the chipmunk?s little tub, but it was the nicest action of the day. Ted and the chipmunk
Ted and the chipmunk
Ted and the chipmunk, with Ted?s tolerant disposition and the chipmunk?s trusting disposition. As I was getting to trust bears, I began thinking of them as a lot like chipmunks and chickadees that are quick to trust and not as much like the more closely related dogs I met as a mailman by in the 1960?s. On the other hand, one of the joys of the job were the dogs that joined with me and followed me to 20200527 Yellow bellied sapsucker
Yellow-bellied sapsucker
the end of my route and then went back to their homes. I still have a picture of Pixie who liked to chase squirrels up trees and look at me as if I was supposed to do something to help. This is a 48-second video from "Taught" of Ted and the Chipmunk in their twin tubs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8ddJjYBZAE

Out the window, a yellow-bellied sapsucker stopped by and showed me how beautiful his head and neck are. I don?t like the name yellow-bellied for this beautiful bird. When you look up yellow-bellied in the dictionary, it says cowardly, but I don?t know of another name for this bird.

Word came on Sunday without certainty, but today it?s official. Shadow was seen clearly last night now at the age of 33. No picture from this year yet. The news gives a calming feeling. Her known descendents number around 300, minus known and unknown deaths, plus any litters we might have missed. Several of us are working on picture ID catalogs for this largest bear clan ever recorded. It is amazing that the matriarch is still alive as the second oldest black bear on record.

Thank you for all you do.

hi joho!
i am so happy you and joan able to get out! hope it helped your mind alot. sounds like you were very careful and should be okay. good you got your soup. i know sometimes only certain places has the stuff. i wanted to see those astronaunts take off but it got cancelled. they said good chance it would be cause of rain i think going for it again next week i am happy the space program kinda is back, was sad when it got shut down back in 2011 i think.

hi lupe i still was not able to mow the dogs yard mud thick where dogs keep the grass gone and their holes they dug out full of water murry cant handle that jim got the whole front mowed he uses his gator and big pull behind mower so he can mow thru and no mud or big holes. my woodpeckers have been coming every day lots of them.
