Good morning everyone- 50 here and cloudy. We're hoping to get the grass mowed today but maybe some rain. We got close to 2 inches of rain in the last few days. So glad for all the plants I put in. I think most of that soaked in too as we are below normal for rainfall this spring.  We are still in line for warmer temps this week so I think i'll finally get the chair pads out for the back porch. Yesterday I was sitting out there for a long time. A cardinal flew up to the porch twice. He gets cat food from their bowl (which I leave out on purpose). Well- he just couldn't do that while I was out there so after 2 of his attempts I went back inside. I've seen a cardinal a lot this spring so I think he and his mate are nesting somewhere close. Watched a little bird collect dry grass and carry it off several times.

I think Holly and Lucky liked the warmth of the sun on their bellies- very cute and Ted is magnificent. Wonder where Tasha will end up with that hole.
cal- bil and his wife are probably permanent in the nursing home now.  They seem pretty content there. They are planning to sell their house but their kids haven't made any progress on that due to ykw.

Have a great Monday jewelies!

hi ev1,
Joan happily reading her Amish cookbook.  She is having a very good day.  It would be a little better for us if it were not so gloomy and wet outside.  It is warm though, and not very windy.
Lots of exciting news about 8 people getting ykw antibodies from a Moderna vaccine with very little negative effects.  This is really wonderful news for us all.  There is hope now for relief from isolation.  The DOW is up over 900 points today.  People will be going safely back to work soon.  I hear that Georgia and Florida are not yet seeing a surge of new cases in spite of being open a while now.  I see  that a lot of workers will continue to work from home.  Some permanently.
Those bears and Sharon and Doc are so entertaining.  Kind of funny to hear of the nice new 2008 van with A-C.  LOL  WTG to those who got so many good pictures of the Bandit and his visits with Ted and Tasha. I think he explains why Holly is so worked up all the time.
The update is great too.  The eagles are also doing fine so far.  Have not seen many falcon chicks or owls.  I can't seem to get the old nest videos to work.  I used to like watching the geese jump out of the tree in CA across from the barn owl tree, but can't seem to find them anymore.
Well may the Good Lord Take a Liken too Ya bye for now.

Daily Updates
Family Break-up: Lily and Samantha - UPDATE May 18, 2020
18 May 2020
 Print Email
We received a report on Lily and learned that the family who sees her was up on Wednesday and Lily and her four yearlings were together as usual that evening. Samantha with 2 of her 4 yearlings 5-16-20
Samantha with two of her
four yearlings - 5-16-20
That family was up again on the weekend and saw two of her yearlings alone Sunday evening, so it appears that family break-up was sometime during May 14-17. It will be interesting to see who Lily is seen with next and when she will begin and end having a suitor with her.

Today, we saw drama as Samantha tried to enforce break-up with Ozzie who wouldn?t let go. But back to the beginning. Two evenings ago on the 16th, Samantha and her cubs crowded onto the scale together peacefully. She is leaving her yearlings at good weights. The three we weighed singly were 50.5, 66.5, and 83 pounds. Samantha was 222. Yesterday (the 17th), they did not show. This morning (the 18th), she was here trying to be alone butNew van
New van
Ozzie came to her and she chased him off. When he was reluctant to go he got rolled on his back and Samantha was on him. It looked ferocious, but she did no harm and he licked her face. She melted and walked away. Another time, she was chasing him around a tree and he just kept dancing around the white pine in a standing up position but not climbing to escape. Samantha gave up and walked away. Ozzie eventually left. Olive and Oscar showed up separately later but had no interactions with Samantha who was here a lot bulking up for successful reproduction.

Somehow we missed putting 2 pictures in the update last night, this one of Samantha, and of the new van with air conditioning front and back for the Black Bear Field Courses.

Thank you for all you do.

hi jewelies it is 54 here 63 in the barn 6 raccoonies did not see the babies as of yet. i just had enough cookies little debbies white cakes to get out. baby birds doing good. i really did not read the update i hate break ups read at the bottom about the new van it sure is pretty. old folks day at walmart so need to get on the move hay griz is not barking yet.

hi joho!
so nice to hear joan having a good day i did see that on that on those 8 people on cbs at 2 am i woke up and watched it then got up. jim went back to ford yesterday he said they had everything set up go in one door and when you leave out another walk thru and take your temp automatic shows up on a big screen deal workers on the line have a shield in between them and everyone has to wear a mask no exception. some people want to stay home and draw unemployment but you have to get tested and have the virus to do that. or have someone in your family that has it. cant just say oh i like staying home drawing money. i looked in on the decorah nest here and there was sad to see them siting in the rain mom with them their dad not far away but looked again yesterday and not raining nice and cool and babies were sleeping. this cool weather is good for them maybe keep those black flies away i hope cause they got no help from no one around there on that. if they fall again and lets hope not at least maybe they will get to soar again and get help there for sure. maybe the weather will clear for you and you can ride your bike a little.

Good morning everyone- it is 50 here and cloudy. We had drizzle yesterday off and on so the mowing didn't get done. No sun at all but maybe today. It is just better for my attitude to see  the sun at least a little bit during the day.
When I was making lunch i was watching the cardinal come to the back porch for cat food. This was the first time I saw his mate come to the porch too. I saw the most amazing thing. The male was at the cat dish when the female flew in and landed on the edge of the porch. The male took a piece of cat food, went to her and fed it to her. I saw him do it twice then I left. Although they didn't see me I didn't want to mess their routine. I loved it.
johoward- so good to hear from you; have you guys gone out for a ride; we don't go far but at least it gets us out of the house. Pick a sunny day and drive around and see the flowers that are blooming. Our lilacs are starting around here- just beautiful.

cal- ty for the info on jim's work. It is good to know about the safety measure taken.  Also- i'm glad they have measures in place to take care of people who just want to take advantage of the ykw  situation.
I talked on the phone with Duke's Mom yesterday. Duke is doing fine and he loves having her working from home. He's even more spoiled now than before. lol Well- that is part of his "job."
I've seen the Decorah babies trying to self feed- very cute. THey are getting big.
Time for breakfast- have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Fun Ted, Herbie, Green-up, Etc. - UPDATE May 19, 2020
19 May 2020
 Print Email
Ted knows how to have fun. He is the master of pond fun, exuding happy energy that makes the water sparkle. Here Cindy Rae captured what she titled ?Ted and His Diamonds? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC3CjPgJwOA

Out the window at the WRI, green-up is in progress. Herbie
Herbie
Grass is growing fast on this 77 degree day, and 8-year-old Herbie (son of Jewel, grandson of June, great grandson of Shadow) is stomping it down. He stomp-walked back and forth as if taking possession of the area. I wonder if he smells Samantha and is warning off other males. We?ll see who Samantha pairs with. I hope she is good enough to stop by and introduce him.

Aspen leaves are growing while birch leaf buds are barely bursting to the right of them.

The gull is glowing white against the shadows, looking irresistible as he waits and watches for any sign I am getting up to get him bologna. When I get up, he flies to the feeding spot and gets ready to catch.

A red squirrel that appeared today is the roundest one I?ve ever seen. They usually have only 3 or 4 kittens, as they are called, but this mother-to-be looks extra big. They have 8 teats. Do they ever have eight kittens?

I suspect young beavers are in the lodge across the lake, and I?d like to paddle over and listen.

Good morning everyone- 57 here and cloudy again. I won't complain about the clouds because the system that is giving clouds to us is stalled east of here and causing flooding. We mowed yesterday- grass was a bit long in places so I may have to rake some. It was a bit chilly- heavy duty hoodie and ear muffs. I got into a little mud going over the bare spots where the well was drilled in March. No standing water anywhere so we needed the rain.

I don't believe I told you all about the hibiscus I bought last week. I had a pink one that I moved a couple of years ago and it didn't make it. So when I went for annuals I bought a red one. After I dug the hole i had a hard time getting it out of the pot and dumped The whole plant upside down into the hole. Yikes!! I only broke off one stem and the rest looks good so far. I don't think it will bloom this year but it might. In spite on me.

I saw Ted playing in the water- he had a great time.
cal- be careful on that back road; I know sometimes people fly by here too. We have often joked about putting a speed bump in by our mail box. lol
Today is our 34th anniversary. Usually we do a little trip or overnighter but not this year. We decided to duplicate our wedding dinner that my friend Winnie made. Fried chicken, potato salad. We'll forgo the cake this year. Anyhow- hubby bought the salad at the grocery yesterday and we decided to get KFC and bring it home. Even though things are opening up we are still limiting contact because of ykw.
Eagle program on tonight on IPT 8 PM in central time. Amy Ries is on.
Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Another day of rain! 3 inches and it's still coming down. Flash flood warnings out for the  the county. Normally our rain comes from the west but this rain is coming from the southeast. Oh, and winter came back! Yesterday and today we didn't even hit 50!

Cal, I saw on the news about all the changes you mentioned that Ford did so the employees could safely go back to work. Almost everything is open here now. The mall can open but they haven't got a plan yet to make it safe for everyone. But I figure they will open as soon as possible. Sis and I went to Michael's today after grocery shopping at Walmart. Not all of the Michael's employees are wearing masks. And no one is sanitizing the carts. There was no sanitizer to do it yourself. Guess you have to supply your own. The only thing they are doing is having marks 6 ft apart at the checkouts. And they prefer you pay with debit or credit card. You mentioned the dead raccoon...someone hit one, one house down from Robin's on Monday. She didn't know there were any raccoons in her neighborhood. Also a little bunny rabbit had been hit, too. People drive so fast on her street. Especially after it was black topped.

Lupe, Happy Anniversary!  Enjoy your anniversary dinner! Sounds good to me! I've seen male cardinals feed their mates before! It is the sweetest thing to see. They mate for life. They are our state bird. I went to Lowe's this afternoon to get a couple hanging flower baskets. It was raining a little and then it poured down. I just kept looking. Got drenched and couldn't  find anything that I liked. Then I spied some perennials. I ended up buying a Shasta daisy, delphinium, blanket flower, pincushion flower and a deep blue salvia. When I cut down most of the forsythia it left a void that I'm happily filling in with flowers.

Have a nice day! Stay safe!

hi jewelies it is 58 here 65 in the barn 5 raccoonies baby birds still doing good. i put bird seed back on the other side where pearl is at. pushed those two big gates back gave all of it pearl but that little area is for the birds. but one raccoonie like to hurry back there and eat it birds sitting on that fan wanting it. i got that raccoonie to come back out to me and gave it donuts so the birds could eat and feed the babies still.

hi lupe! happy anniversary to you and hubby! sounds good get the food eat at home. no place like home really. mine and jims i believe 32nd coming up in july. i try to be careful on that curvy backroad esp coming back cause then i am on side that is huge drop off. if it is real muddy or icy i dont go that way go on up to black top turn there and then on to my gravel roads.

hi rues! that michaels not doing a good job at all on being safe someone should report them. i would not want to spend my money their since they dont care about keeping customers very safe. i hate someone hit a raccoonie and a bunny by robin. they fly down these gravel roads if it was paved be just awful few old houses around here built so close to the road at least ours we have it built way off the road yesterday i was in smokie going down our driveway to get the mail and saw something white over by our front field it was a cat that one jim gets mad at. little killdeer sitting on her eggs 4 of them and she trust jim when he mows he mows around her that cat over by there and jim mad it or some cat been killing some baby bunnies so i turned and drove straight for that cat with my horn blaring and that cat jumped up and turned around and took off. i think those people across from us on down maybe their cat. jim about ready to find out and if so tell them they better make that cat and inside cat or it will be a dead one. all cats should be inside. not out killing.  we are suppose to get rain i think next week every day. :( poor michigan with the dams that broke and before those poor people can go in a shelter have to be tested for ykw. when is crow getting his teeth pulled?

Good morning everyone- looks like another gloomy day here. I slept in a bit after staying up to watch the Nova program on eagles. While the info on the man and his golden eagle was fascinating I didn't like the last season at Decorah being spread throughout the hour. We all know that year was difficult to watch and I didn't need to see it rehashed again. I realize it's important for all people to know the challenges and struggles of our wildlife in nature but if I had known what was on there I wouldn't have watched. Especially since we are getting to that same time frame there now when things became difficult.

on to happy stuff. Hubby and I had a relaxing day- our kfc chicken was delicious.  Neither one of us could remember the chicken that our friend made but we decided it was special because she made it. We were amazed at the line at kfc. They must be doing a pretty good business. With the ykw closing things all the restaurants who had drive up service in place had an edge.  Things are opening up now. Our rec center opens next Tuesday with lots of new rules.

rues- wow lots of rain your way. Just saw the weather and no sun here again today. I need to get outside and do a bit of stuff in the flower bed. Yesterday was 60 and windy here. Too unpleasant to even sit on the porch. I haven't been to lowe's for a long time. Hubby likes menards best. We need to make trip there and take the pick up and get me some mulch. It's the best price there. Hubby needs some lumber too.

Need to feed the cats and me- have a great day jewelies!

Hi ev1,
Just wanted to let you know we were watching Nova on PBS last night.  It was about eagles all over the world.  It started off with footage from our Decorah nest.  Now and then they would bring story back to Decorah.  During the show they covered all of last years nest activity including the bugs and what happened with both babies.  They did a good job telling our story clear up to the recovery and release of both eaglets.
Very well done program.  Joan and I were pleased to have seen it.  You may have seen it too.  I remember seeing it some time ago, but did not recall seeing the Decorah nest tale.
Joan doing OK. Still sleeping.  We have to go to have her eyes checked today at 3pm.  She will wear her mask and go into Chestnut Commons Cleveland Clinic by herself.
She needs this done.  Her vision is getting blurry, and they saw some blood inside her eye the last time she was checked. Also, one of her recent meds requires a visual eye examine periodically done.
We are scared, but the clinic assured her it will be safe. We need prayers they are correct.
God bless you all now happy Thursday.
