Daily Updates
Tasha, Green-up, Bear Foods, Beavers - UPDATE May 21, 2020
21 May 2020
 Print Email
On a hot day with the bears still in winter fur, Sharon knew what Tasha would like?and she did.Tasha

Yesterday, with green-up moving fast now with temperatures in the 80?s, Donna and I looked for bear foods. Although not a bear food, the clump of marsh marigolds was a brilliant sign of spring progressing.

A red raspberry stem showed where a deer had nibbled it in the winter and the plant was battling back with bursting leaves. Raspberries are favorite food but hard for a bear to pick efficiently. We find a few raspberry seeds in many scats, but berries that grow in clumps in greater abundance are favored when they are available.

A wild strawberry was in blossom and will be one of the earliest fruits to ripen.

Big-leafed aster is suddenly at the stage bears like?furled and fuzzy. These leaves cover a lot of the forest floor and may be why a couple bear feeders said that few bears have come in the last couple days.

A nice find was a wild sarsaparilla plant with many healthy buds. I believe with the long streak of colder than usual weather, followed now by days in the 80?s and hopefully now too late for bad frosts we have a good start toward good berry crops. Summer rain will be a deciding factor.

Beaver lodge

Today, Donna and I paddled across Woods Lake to listen for baby beavers (called kits). It was just windy enough that we couldn?t tell if there were no sounds or just too much wind to hear. We took a picture of the lodge close-up for more detail of this well kept lodge that was built in 1977. From there, we snapped a lodge-eye picture of the WRI cabin and birch trees that have just leafed out in the last couple days and are developing fast. The windows of the cabin that are partially blocked by the big red pine trunk are my desk windows where I look for wildlife action as I sit and type.

We also checked the other beaver lodge on the lake and saw what might have been why the beavers didn?t stay there this past winter. Part of a wall had broken away giving a view partway into the lodge.

Beautiful day!

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- must be mid 50's here; new guy cat was here eating at shadow's bowl. he looked at me warily but since I didn't yell at him he stayed to eat. It will take a bit to get him to trust me since he was nose to nose with my shadow when I first saw him. My immediate reaction was to yell to get him away from her. We have seen another stray- a gray and white guy in our yard. He didn't  come near the house.

Well- the racoon was here finishing the cat food. Hubby was tapping on the window. I went out- she has babies somewhere- easy to see she is lactating. So will try to figure out how to get food to her.

We are going to menards today. I may look at flowers there too. Boy- just 3 months ago I wouldn't have been excited to go to menards- now it will make my day! lol

The update photos made me see flowers in a different light. I love to photograph wild flowers but have never looked at them at food for critters. It's hard to imagine it being so warm north of us. It hasn't been above 62 here all week and it was 80 in Ely. Wow.

Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone-62 here and breezy with some clouds but I do see some clear sky. Rain on the way some time today. I checked the radar and weirdly enough the rain is moving mostly south to the north. So even though there is a line of storms just west of us they may not make it here. Sitting on the porch last evening I saw some gnats. Annoying little things! lol

Our trip to menards was sort of fun. The store has their act together. Masks are required and instead of their carts all jammed up together they are separated in singles probably  so they can disinfect them. Two people checking at the door. I got all the stuff on my list and so did hubby. He got 6 x 6 treated lumber- one was 10 feet long and the other 14 feet long. Then we loaded 10 bags of mulch.  People in menards were pretty aware of others and stayed away. Oh and cal- I did buy a bag of dog food for the racoon mom. I was going to get the 50# bag they had on sale but hubby wasn't there at the time and I couldn't lift it so I got a smaller  bag. Beneful- I think.

I bought new pads for my chair on the back porch. I like to sit there and read and the old pads had almost no padding at all. When I looked out on my way to bed spitty and shadow were curled up together on my new pads sound asleep. I did put an old throw carpet on top of the pads to keep them from getting hairy. lol

Well- I need to get out and distribute my 10 bags of mulch- I can just drive the truck around and deliver it. No wheelbarrow and buckets- yay!

Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Holly, Green-up, Gull and Shrew - UPDATE May 23, 2020
23 May 2020
 Print Email
To start with the old news, Holly was shocked with her own strength?at least she looked that way when the dead tree she hadHolly with fallen tree
Holly with fallen tree
barely bumped toppled over onto the bear enclosure fence and the root ball almost hit her. "Taught" caught the action here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1sCFg7n8II, and she caught the night crew coming in with a ladder and chain saw to go into action. Scott carried the ladder, his wife Cindy carried the chain saw, and Sharon and Judy Thon were there to be bear people and more muscle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR2YtTOSGo4

Out the window, spring green-up is moving fast and making food everywhere. Throughout the neighborhood, people are wondering where the bears went now that tender leaves that still have a lot of their nutrients in a highly digestible fluid form are plentiful.

We haven?t seen a woodchuck come for sunflower seed hearts and broccoli for several days. They?re eating grass and other greens. Same for deer not bothering with commercial food. They?d rather have what Mother Nature gives them at this time of year. They?re done with the woody stems of winter and can find good greens everywhere.

Red maple blossom female

Red maple male flowers

The forest has a whole new green look that makes for beautiful days when mixed with blue skies and shimmering water. Part of the new look is red maple flowers doing their thing. The male flowers with their anthers and stamens are shriveling after having done their job. The female flowers that were so pretty red on May 5 have turned into winged seeds that are growing fast. The leaves have also burst from their buds are doing the same. It?s a race to see what comes first?seeds dropping or leaves reaching full size.

Gull short tailed shrew

Then, an experiment. Donna took a bike ride and saw a dead short-tailed shrew beside the road. She told me to give it to a gull and get a picture of it because not everything will eat a shrew. She was right, and gulls apparently won?t either. The gull picked the shrew up at least 10 times, dropping it quickly each time. Finally, the gull said ?No thank you? and flew away.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- warm out this morning with little wind.  We had half an inch of rain yesterday so all my outdoor plans got cancelled. I did spend some time sitting on my new chair pads ,reading and watching the rain. There were tornadoes in the next county east of us. No people were hurt.

cal- my mom racoonie came yesterday and finished the leftover cat food then got to work on her bowl of dog food. She ate for a long time. She had her back to the door and if she knew I was watching her she didn't let on. I only watched for a short time. I didn't want her to run off. Yes- I have a bowl of water out all the time. I always know if she's been there because she dirties the water. Hubby and I talked yesterday and decided it would be better to feed her somewhere away from the house.  But then I wouldn't get to see her and the babies. So for now she gets fed on the back porch.

My perennial beds are just beautiful. Blooming now are giant alliums, columbine and the woodland hyacinths and the fern leaf peonies are about done.  The iris are just now coming out with poppies and peonies getting ready. Last week I tied up the peony plants. Usually they are in full bloom and there is a forecast of heavy rain and wind and i'm out there fighting the wind trying to get them tied up. This year I finally got ahead of the game. The blooms are so big and heavy that rain knocks them down. I also have 2 peonies I bought at the Denver Botanical Garden 2 years ago that are going to bloom. Yay!
We have forecast for storms here today- maybe i'll get out later.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! A couple days ago I had the furnace on, I was wearing jeans and sweatshirt and it was raining cats and dogs. Yesterday was a nice 75 but today it is 88 with abundant sunshine and the ac is on! Still haven't opened the pool. The winter cover had over 3 inches of water on it thanks to 5 days of rain! We had hoped after we drained most of the water off of it yesterday the hot sun would dry the rest of it up. It's so much easier to get the cover off if it is dry. Unfortunately we got some more rain overnight. So we're hoping to get the cover off tomorrow! Yesterday morning I got out of the county! Sis and I went on a road trip to decorate our grandparents and parents graves. We actually went through 3 counties! I was so excited! Freedom! It's always fun when we go to our grandparents county. It's rural farmland and a very pleasant drive. We stopped on the highway and assisted a turtle in safely getting to the other side of the road. Later in the evening I was reading that it was World Turtle Day!

Cal, I was a little upset with Liz, too! I hope she changes her mind when the show comes back in the fall or whenever it comes back! Crow went to the dentist on Thurs. Got his teeth pulled and got his new lower plate! They look really good. He has to wait till the gums heal and then later on go back and have the implant posts implanted! It amazes me that he hasn't had any pain. He is whiner and he hasn't whined at all! His dentist called him later on that evening to see how he was doing. Then said he was off to Key West and would see him June 4 for a recheck. Hope Jim feels better. Did he go back to work?

Lupe, Menard's is planning a  new store in our area. There are none around here. They started planning for it about a year ago. They found property they like out by the Interstate up on a hill. They've already paved a winding driveway up the hill. Looks like the entrance to a mansion or something! Someone said they heard that they are waiting to see if the hill is stable. Lots of rain and the whole hill could land on the Interstate! We got water in our basement yesterday morning. Crow's been using the shop vac to suck it up. What a pain.  All your flowers sound so pretty. Yesterday at our maternal grandparents grave we were talking to a lady that was decorating her grandparents grave. Her grandparents lived next door to our grandparents.  She was telling us when she was a little girl how much she loved our grandma's flower beds. We told her that we loved them, too. We had a nice chat with her while social distancing! On the way home we went through Dairy Queen's drive thru and ate lunch at their outdoor tables. It was a nice day.

Jo, hope Joan's eye appt went well the other day!

Have a nice evening! Stay safe!

Good morning everyone- 65 here and storming. Of course my plan was to get out early and get my mulch done. I should have done it yesterday when we got home but though I planted the 4 hosta I got at menards it was really hot and muggy so I came in.

rues- we went on a ride yesterday and saw a turtle too!!! We thought it would be too wet to do gravel roads but it turned out that it was perfect- no mud and no dust. We did get out of the county and may have been in 2 other counties. The turtle we saw was huge- just moseying down the middle of the road. His shell was at least14 inches long. We didn't measure him- I didn't want to stress him or her.  We stopped and waited for him to move. Ours were the only tracks on the road and so we left him near the one side. Can't believe it was World Turtle Day and we both saw a turtle!! We are lucky! Just read your post again- I missed World Turtle Day by I day. lol

cal- I watched mamma racoonie yesterday. She ate her fill for sure. Our stray new guy cat came around while she was eating and I managed to scare him away (gently) so she could eat in peace. Plus there was another stray cat here last evening- a tabby. That make 3 in the last couple weeks. Makes me so mad.

We went for breakfast pizza yesterday and no one there had face masks on. A bit sad but we will see if there is an increase in ykw in our state. Well we had masks on. Sil had broken a part of a tooth last week and called her oncologist to see if she could go to the dentist. He said Yes and I was amazed. Her last chemo is Friday and her appointment is Monday.
cal- is Jim feeling better now??

Have a great day jewelies!
