Good morning everyone- oh cal-- ty for posting about cousin Janice and her Nelly Jelly. We all know what a heartbreak losing a pet is. She will be receiving positive vibes from me.
I don't know if I've shared this story with you all here- forgive me if it's a repeat. Growing up i had a favorite aunt- Aunt Mo. Mo is short for Myrtle. She never married and lived and took care of her parents along with her sister. Aunt Mo loved pets but was allergic or at least  that was the story. I think her Mom said no to pets. After Aunt Mo died sometime in the early 80's I decided that  in her heaven she was surrounded by all our pets who have passed away. It has brought me great comfort knowing that she was there enjoying and taking care of special critters for those of us still on Earth. I've shared this story with many people- adults and children.

Aunt Mo was my Mom's sister and I was named after her- not Myrtle but her middle name is my middle name. Phew- not Myrtle though I did name a special calico cat Myrtle.

Well- need to get breakfast.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  Hot here today... in the 80's!  We went right to summer!  Well... After a lot of back and forth with the warranty people, the repairman finally made it here yesterday.  Only thing is... my fridge can't be fixed.   :-\  They are going to give me what I paid for it and I guess it's up to me to find another.  I'm thinking about going back to a side by side, instead of the french door one that I have now.  Shopping on Monday I think.  What a hassle and so glad Lowe's loaned me one!!

lupe... Nice story about your aunt!  So... you're feeding raccoons, too, now?  lol

cal... Poor Cousin Janice!  I know she's going to miss her little dog.  Loved the pics of her... especially the one where she's laying down with a treat.  I had some stale bread that I was just going to throw away and decided to quarter the pieces and throw them over the fence behind my house for the birds.  Yesterday Mama Deer was eating it!  I can tell it's her because she has a scar on the top of her hip.  I put more bread out today, thinking maybe I could make friends with her, but when I looked out there was a crow picking it up.  Not just one piece though... I watched her stuff FIVE pieces in her beak, then it took off.  One piece left and the little birds were pecking at it.  Greedy crow!!  lol

Hi to everyone!  Today is my daughter's 44th birthday!  Am I really that old??  They're coming for pizza for supper.  Clemson grand is finally coming home from visiting her boyfriend for over 2 weeks!  I've missed seeing her smiling face!!

Hi Jewelies! Since ykw came around I have been having a heck of a time remembering what day it is! Now are local newspaper has started delivering the Sunday paper on Saturday!  ::) They say now we can enjoy the Sunday paper all weekend! I kept thinking today was Sunday. Now I'll have to deal with another Sunday tomorrow!

Cal, that Blacklist was weird! I thought the animated people's eyes were scary looking and they walked funny! It was pretty good though. Hope they can get back to work before next season. Crow told me today that Downton was on HBO. He said it's free right now. I may watch it tomorrow. Like you and Lupe, I didn't watch that video either. I don't need to see anything bad if that's what was on there. So sorry about Cousin Janice's Nelly Jelly. What a sweet looking dog. We are still grieving Molly and it's been 7 months yesterday. Her 16 th birthday is coming up on the 24 th.  :'(   That is so cool that Jim's dad is baking! Did he do much of that before? I can remember after my maternal grandma died, grandpa babied all her houseplants especially her African violets. Every time we visited him those plants looked better and better!

Ra, happy birthday to your daughter! Hope she has a nice one! You mentioned your grand visiting her boyfriend...my neighbor's daughter, the one that goes to college at Myrtle Beach, went to Wisconsin to visit her boyfriend a couple days after they closed the school. Then she flew to AZ with his family in their private jet! They have a house in the desert with an infinity pool! My neighbor was so sad because it was the 1st time in 20 yrs that she didn't spend Mother's Day with her.  Crazy that they couldn't fix your fridge! At least now you will have a brand new one! Glad they gave you a loaner!  We are supposed to be in the 80's tomorrow. Today was nice around 75. Rain predicted for almost everyday next week. Everything is so overgrown.

Lupe, I finally got to the garden center and got my tomato plants! I also found lantana! Normally lantana is one of the last annuals they get around here. I got 2 pots of them, one for each of the urns out front. I'm planning on going to Lowe's tomorrow to get a couple hanging baskets. Crow wants a jalapeno pepper plant. I hope I can find a couple green pepper plants, too.  I took all my houseplants outside Wednesday afternoon. Pretty sure winter is gone for good now! The house looks so bare without them and the porch is bursting at it's seams with them! I've mentioned many times about Robin's neighbor and all the feral cats he feeds. He never has them fixed. I was weed trimming behind Robin's garage yesterday when I came upon a little calico kitten under a hosta plant. I have a thing about calicos! I grabbed her but she wriggled away and ran under the fence. I know in my heart I would have brought her home with me if she hadn't gotten away!  I enjoyed your Aunt Mo story!

Have a nice evening! Stay safe!   Forgot to mention...we got our hair cut Thursday! I feel 10 pounds lighter! Anne said they have been working 11 hours a day getting everyone's hair done!

rues... I bet you do feel better getting a haircut!!  I have an appointment for next Friday... hope she doesn't postpone it... I'll bet mine will be really busy, too.  We know how your neighbor feels about not having her daughter there for Mother's Day, but these days you can face time and that makes it a lot better than in the "olden days".

cal... Blacklist was a little weird... some animated, some regular.  I agree with rues... the animated characters were kinda scary looking.  We had a nice supper... Just my daughter, the girls, and the youngest's boyfriend.  I got an almond joy cake from one of the bakeries in town.  It was very good!!  White cake, coconut/almond creme between the layers, and chocolate icing.

Good morning everyone- 55 and soggy looking out with more rain on the way. I forgot to tell you about our hair cuts on Friday. Hubby and I go to our neighbor who is just part time with one chair in a salon addition in her house. They remodeled years ago and built a really nice salon addition. She sent an e-mail to all her clients with the new regulations. We had to go in one at a time- wash hands, etc. She is a very artistic person- likes antiques and changes the d?cor around pretty often. Well- she is bare bones d?cor now- easier to keep clean. We both wore masks and I held it up when it was time to trim around my ears.

cal- I imagine you have more than one little racoonie out there; our new guy has been around but with all the time I've spent outside I don't see him. Yesterday my Shadow spent some time gardening with me. She let me pet her a lot. I even got to hold her loosely while I pulled a tick off her ear. Time for Frontline here.

rues- I got lantana at another place yesterday plus some geraniums and petunias. Got everything planted before lunch. I was amazed at the number of people at the greenhouse this late in the year but it has been cool and really dry here. I heard one person say they put in veggie plants that got frozen out and she was replacing them.  Too bad you didn't get that calico kitten-  go check under that hosta again!

ra- what a bummer about your fridge; shopping for a new one sounds like fun though; do you have a budget? Yes- i'm feeding a racoon but not on purpose-lol. So glad your grand is back and pizza sounds good. Oh my word that cake sounds divine!!!

Well- going for breakfast pizza this morning; we need to check bill's house in town. The neighbor volunteered to mow the lawn so hubby unlocked the garage door. We just need to check the house and make sure the garage door got locked.
Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Bears! - UPDATE May 17, 2020
17 May 2020
 Print Email
Bear news from Sharon for this date:

This past week gave our Pond Cam Moderators/drivers and online viewers a great deal to talk about and some added excitement when a wild bear got into the exterior portion of the bear closure. As for me and our staff, exciting maybe, stressful for sure. When Heidi, our Office Manager, Judy, our Education Director and my right-hand person and I arrived at the bear center we found the ?bandit bear? strolling towards the food shed. As soon as the bear saw us it immediately began to look for a way out. He scaled the new wooden fence easily and walked around the brim; as he approached the balsam tree behind the fence, he reached for it and was down in a flash.

We walked the fence immediately and fixed one spot. Scott cut down the tree and hot-wired the area again, he hasn?t been back since. Thanks to our diligent Moderators who are always watching our bears and alerted us about the ?bandit bear? visit.

I do believe Ted and Tasha were the only bears that enjoyed his visit. We believe this is a 2-year-old that is part of the family that was dispersed near our trail last year.

In other news, Tasha dug herself a nice hole just east of the bunker dens. There used to be a large ant colony where she is digging and it?s a pretty deep hole. Time will tell what hers plans are.

Holly remains on alert over near the cub tree/white pine. As I approached today and snapped her picture, she was playfully letting a dogwood branch hit her face and pawing at it.

Lucky and Tasha both seem to compete for cuteness and silliness awards. These two put on a comedy routine most every day. They seem to like showing off.

Flyover

Ted was posing on the mound today and I was able to click a picture of him. He is such a handsome bear.

Also, the Air National Guard did a flyover this week thanking all the essential workers in Ely. We are very proud of our little town and thank all of the folks keeping it running, especially the hospital and grocers.

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bearkeeper

At the WRI, Samantha and her four yearlings are the main attraction with others being Chloe, Spanky, Andrew, and more. Also in the yard is a new 2008 Chevy Express 10-passenger Van with air conditioning for the Black Bear Field Courses. We?re keeping the 2001 Ford Van and the 2003 Chevy pickup for interns and winter 4-wheel-drive use.

It was a full and beautiful day. More to tell.

Thank you for all you do.
