Daily Updates
Braveheart, Donna, Spanky, and an Intruder - UPDATE May 12, 2020
12 May 2020
 Print Email
Donna and 4 yearlings
Donna and her 4 yearlings

More bears, nice to see. Two of Shadow?s granddaughters and her last-born cub have showed up. 20-year-old Donna and her four yearlings (two males [Betelguese and Bramble] and two females [Blossom and Bunni]) have checked in to the neighborhood and had their pictures taken for the record. This evening 18-year-old Braveheart did the same with her three yearlings (2 females [K?trina and Katherine] and a male [Joseph]). 100% survival in these families.Braveheart and her 3 yearlings

Spanky
Spanky (Shadow's last cub)
Also this evening, Shadow?s last born, 5-year-old Spanky, her problem child, showed that he made it another year. He is only about 215 pounds, though, which is light for a 5-year-old. He was his old self and still can?t extend his tongue past his lips to ingest food, putting him at a disadvantage. He was born to this neighborhood, and the neighborhood will take care of him.

At the Bear Center a clever intruder got a free meal and possibly a meeting with Ted, but he probably won?t be back. He got over the outer fence but not the inner fence where the bears are. HappyCub got pictures that showed his escape route, and Sharon got photo evidence of a step toward that route. While I was there to see what I could see, I heard a chain saw on the outside of the fence and the crucial tree came down. We?ll see if that thwarts the bear that has some good stories to tell. It was good of the bear to show us a flaw in our fence design that we never thought a bear could penetrate. This bear might be smarter than the average bear. We?ll see if Scott foiled the bear with his chainsaw and put us in compliance with the security we thought we had.

Good morning everyone- wow- a wild bear got into the NABC but not to where out beards are. cal- I think the chain saw cut down the tree that maybe was the access tree. Smarter than your average bear-lol- i've used that term before.
I'm so envious of the Ely residents who can see and identify the bears from that area. Gives me a sense of calm knowing those kind, caring people are around.

The highlight of my day yesterday was a trip to the Goodwill store in the city. Felt kind of funny not to  stop in at least one of the big grocery stores there but didn't want to risk exposure to anything.  We all had masks on and the difference was that I unloaded and sorted all my stuff. They were really organized. Such nice people.

Now my project will be to figure out the recycling center. Will give them a call to make sure before heading out.
It's about 45 here and no clouds yet but I think rain on the way later today.
cal- maybe you should put some floaties on Pearl in case the water gets in. lol

Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Lily, Andrew, and Snow - UPDATE May 13, 2020
13 May 2020
 Print Email
Although Chloe?s appearance on April 27 was the first at the WRI, Lily and her four yearlings were actually the bears spotted in the neighborhood on April 26. They regularly came to a feeding site where the people are not often there but have food out and know her when they see her. Rose breasteed grosbeak
Rose-breasteed grosbeak
13-year-old Lily and all four cubs are okay! I hope we get a picture of them before family break-up. Lily makes our day. This trusting bear has done more for bears than any bear I know.

The mystery of the unknown bear that arrived at the WRI May 5 has been solved. People in the neighborhood went through their pictures looking for the distinctive chest patch of the mystery bear. It is Andrew, the 2-year-old son of Vanna. I don?t think he had ever been to the WRI before. He is the grandson of Dot, great grandson of Blackheart, and great great grandson of Shadow.

Last of the snow
Last of the snow
I?m declaring this day the official end of snow, not counting piles left by snowplows. Most of the snow in the woods disappeared weeks ago, but some remained in a shadowed valley as daily temperatures reached record lows and climbed to below-average highs. Last evening, I snapped a picture of the last smidgeon of that snow. The tiny bit that was still there this morning was gone by 2 PM (51 degrees).

Today, a wolf researcher sent me a video of a hapless bear that wandered too close to a wolf den with four pups in Voyageurs National Park here in northeastern Minnesota. The pack responded, providing footage that a person would never think he or she would see. Click here to view on Voyageurs Wolf Project Facebook Page.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 55 here and it is very soggy out; looks foggy too with more rain late this afternoon.
cal- I didn't read the wolf story either. When you mentioned being in the barn and then your mouse needed a new battery I was confused for a bit. Computer mouse!
 too.
Well- our governor lifted the restrictions for businesses to open on Friday. It was highly suggested that if one is of the certain age- over 60 I believe- that you should limit outside exposure. We had already decided to do that probably for another month.  funniest thing is our neighbor and our hair stylist person called to get our e-mail address so she could send a list of rules to follow. While we were talking I confessed to "doing" my hair with dog clippers. She had a good laugh... then scheduled both of us for 4 PM Friday. lol  and Yay!!

Today is bandage change day- so a trip with sil to the hospital. I did both of our recycling yesterday so I have been out 2 days already this week. Very little contact with others and I wear a mask.  I wonder when our rec center will open and with what restrictions?

Time for breakfast and check on Ted. Decorah babies were snoozing soundly the last I saw of them.

Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- warm here and very soggy. We really needed the rain we got- .7 " in the morning then more last evening. Lots of lightening and thunder when I went to bed.

I had a good visit with my sil. she has also seen the new black cat. He had some interaction with her 2 cats but no serious aggression. I put my food bowls out for my 2 just a bit ago and came in to sit in my chair and the new guy was coming up the road. So I decided to go sit on the porch when he moseyed up and talk to him. Well by the time I got to the back door both the bowls I put out were busy but one bowl had a big racoon at it. My poor Spitty was  just sitting beside him watching his food get eaten. Well- new guy got scared off. Spitty didn't want to eat from a bowl that smelled like racoon so I brought the bowl in and washed it, put in his food and took it back out. Racoon pretty much finished the food in  record time.

cal- too bad about the race; maybe they should just give the guys a car - fill the tank- and say whoever wins wins. No pit stops but maybe a shorter race.
Today some businesses are opening up. The restaurant here in town where hubby goes for coffee is opening tomorrow. Neither of us will be dining out for awhile but good for them.
I'm thinking I may go get annuals today to put in my few containers. I have an idea of what kind I want but I usually get carried away. There are at least 3 greenhouses that i'll want to visit. My lavender plants didn't come back this year so I need to search for some hardy perennials as well. The perfect day!!

Have a great day jewelies!
