Joho... Sending positive thoughts to Joan and you.  Such a sad state of affairs when you can't even go with her to the hospital.  I'm so sorry for you both.   :(

Daily Updates
First Bear!, Tasha at Home, and More - UPDATE April 27, 2020
27 April 2020
 Print Email
The first bear I?ve seen here this year was a pleasant surprise?daughter of RC. First bear of 2020 - Chloe
First bear of 2020 - Chloe
She arrived at 1:20pm today, a day and a half later than the first bear of last year which was a big male, who arrived at 12:55am on April 26, 2019. At 2 years of age, Chloe will likely be mating about a month from now. I hope we see her a lot, who she?s with, how she?s gaining weight, etc. I didn?t get a weight today, but one of these days?

Tasha
Tasha
Yesterday Donna and I went to the Bear Center and were lucky to see Tasha in good view. I wanted to get a shot or two of her at home in tune with her surroundings and making the most of her self isolation. She didn?t disappoint. She moved up to her play area and played with a log. Then she was very intent on something unknown with a thoughtful look in her eyes. We were shooting through the viewing windows so as not to influence her. Then we went up on the balcony outside, thinking she would ignore anyone up there since she has seen so many there for so long. She turned and bolted to the cub tree where she feels secure. Why would a bear that was raised by a loving person and that has seen so many observers bolt from someone who is up on the observation area? Later she came back and looked for seeds under the bird feeder. I?ve said this before, but I am so happy to see these captive bears so connected to their forest and pond surroundings and not pacing or doing other repetitive, mindless things out of boredom. These bears act as much like wild bears as I think is possible in captivity, and they show the public a lot of how wild bears behave.Tasha profile

Today, the ice on big Eagles Nest Lake One was melting with some days to go before it is gone. Donna was down by the dock cutting brush and noticed the first painted turtle we?ve seen this year. It had pulled itself mostly out of the water to enjoy some sun and was very lethargic?probably very cold in the icy water.

Out the window, ants are active and northern flickers are back to eat them as this one was probably doing. I had to look twice to see that it was a flicker because it is lighter and grayer than I?m used to. It?s a male with the distinguishing black mustache mark. We saw the first flicker for us yesterday.

The woodchuck we call the new male that arrived here on May 18 found a treat out the window by my desk?a piece of broccoli, and he ate it right there undisturbed by me moving around only a few feet inside the window. We call him the new male, but he is so comfortable that we must have seen him before. While he was here, the female was near her burrow out in front of the WRI and the young male was on the other side of the WRI.

More and more gulls are returning, this distinctive?looking gull with his black marks on both the upper and lower beak is back doing his fantastic catching, leaping up if he has to or swooping his head low or off to the side?one of the best catchers.

Another good day of watching and writing when they let me.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 52 here and rain on the way.

johoward- so worried about Joan; what a terrible time for you. You are in my thoughts and am sending positive vibes to you both.

cal- I really try to catch the feedings at NABC now. Ted is so smart. He knows exactly when someone arrives there and yesterday he did his sit by the fence like he does when the behind the scene tours happen and he gets hand fed peanuts.

Yesterday I put 17 plants in the ground in my far south bed. The plants were some I had divided from other parts of my beds. My friend took what she wanted so I put the left overs in bare spots. Now I need to dig out daffodils. I seemed to have lots of green but not a lot of blooms.  After dividing hosta in the barn garden the digging yesterday was easy. There are 2 trees in the barn garden and digging around roots is really difficult. It is really a mystery as to how anything can figure out how to survive and put down roots around a tree. But the hosta are thriving there.

We are enjoying fresh asparagus from our "garden." Need to pick more today and will share with sil.

Our governor lifted some restrictions in 77 of our 99 counties in the state. There are of course guidelines to follow but we aren't in one of those counties. We'd already decided to "stay at home" at least until the end of May anyway. We are sil's only outside people to contact her and go in her house so we are super careful.
On a positive note- I've been really impressed with our governor- Kim Reynolds. Listening to her daily updates has been informative. She treats the press with respect and they in turn respect her.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi all- just checking in- hoping to hear from johoward.
sitting in here we just saw 4 goldfinches and we think their mates. It must have been a stop over in a migration pattern. We see one now and then in the summer but never 4 pairs at the same time. Yay!
Rained just a little here- not enough. I spent much of the morning on the phone catching up with friends. Then I went to the grocery for us and sil. Picked up lunch at 2nd Street. Yummy.

Daily Updates
Tubs Are Catching - UPDATE April 28, 2020
28 April 2020
 Print Email
A few days ago, Ted was sitting in his tub. Yesterday, fun-loving Tasha was sitting in one tub and using the other for a big hat and more. Tasha eating a root
Tasha eating a root
Coming from Kentucky, her genes are probably ready to roam and she wisely denned where she has the whole enclosure as her playground?up the cub tree, into the pond frolicking, tossing tubs in the Haven, and strewing straw all around. She also approached Holly who she knows is a playful bear at times, but Holly was self isolating with Lucky and confined so she can?t go out and violate social distancing orders. Soon, though, they?ll all be able to roam the enclosure at times. I look forward to seeing Lucky and Holly hit the pond. The woodchuck got on the scale while he could. We miss Honey in all this. "Pooch" caught Tasha in her raucous rambling on Sunday: Tasha Having Fun ~~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWkTJpm4WGU and in her Haven today: Tasha Having Fun In the NABC Haven Area ~~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bxQLtwUm_g

Also, I?m still learning what bears eat. Tasha is the teacher, eating a root I?ve never seen a bear eat before. Pond Chatters are identifying it as spider milkweed root that I didn?t even know was in the enclosure. I?ll ask around about that.

Tasha's paws   Tasha's paws
Tasha's paws

I have to also admit that I can?t be sure that Tasha?s foot pads are shed or not. The way she scampers around and the smooth look in the pictures would say she has, but I?ve been fooled before. I like to feel them to see if they are soft and new or hard, cracked and old. If she shed them a couple months ago, they could be hardening and looking a little old by now. I?m leaning toward shed. Good catch on the photo of the feet.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 48 and super windy here; there are whitecaps in the cat's water bowl. I'm just glad it isn't really cold. We only got .25" of rain yesterday. Probably didn't even knock down the dust on the road. I was thinking I need to get the cushions out for the chairs on the back porch- maybe tomorrow. Looks to be cloudy as well.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi ev1,

We are still bad here.  Joan still runny and cannot drink or eat.  All her meds are screwed up.  Blood sugars all over the place.  No real help from doctors.  I am going batty. Pray that she gets relief soon.  She needs it bad.
Thoughts and prayers for JP this morning.  Sure hope he is well.

God Bless us all in need.  Please be safe.  It is no joke.  I cannot believe the ignorance some are displaying.

Hi all
johoward- good to see you; so very sorry about Joan. Did the ER give you a list of things to do  at home to take care of Joan?  I hope she is drinking lots of water- diarrhea will dehydrate her. Hang in there. Is your family aware of what's going on with Joan? It sounds like you also need some help. Maybe a visiting nurse can help you get her meds straightened out.

Sometimes I wonder about the folks who aren't aware of this pandemic situation. Maybe they don't watch the news. I don't watch very much of it- a bit of CNN and our local news once a day.

Daily Updates
More Bears, Big Wings, and More - UPDATE April 29, 2020
29 April 2020
 Print Email
I got a good call about another bear in the area?Herbie!?the bear many of you remember being born to Jewel in 2012. Now 8, Carolyn
Carolyn
he was very welcome to the resident who called.

A few miles away, another bear made another resident very happy this afternoon. It was 3-year-old Carolyn, daughter of now 20-year-old Donna, with 3 cute cubs.Carolyns 3 cubs
Carolyn's 3 cubs

Speaking of bears, inquiring minds want to know: Is Lily still alive, and what about Faith? It?s a ?yes? on Lily (now 13) and a ?don?t know? on Faith. Lily was last seen on a trail cam at a den with all four cubs (Marie, Kaiya, Dell, and Leroy) on October 22. That was after hunting season and she looked in fine shape. I applied for a den cam permit so we could learn a bit about play with her cubs and broaden a scientific paper Gordon is writing on bear play in dens, but no go. Maybe this coming winter.

Faith (born to Lily in 2011) is a question. Before we removed the radio collars in the summer of 2014, we learned that Faith had moved a few miles away and seemed to have a territory in an area with few roads. We saw her back in her old area as a 4-year-old with 2 male cubs in 2015 and again in 2016. Then nothing. The fact that she moved to an area with few roads should have helped her survival, but the fact that it?s been this long without seeing her makes us worry. We miss seeing her and wish we?d been able to follow her life and her relationship with Lily.

On Woods Lake, the loon has moved on to bigger water that is now opening up. It?s time for loons to find their old mates and start new families.

Out the window, big wings passed by a couple days ago and perched in a tree. It was a turkey vulture. I slowly sneaked a shot of it perched in the sun, but it was too wary. It flew off.

We don?t usually see turkey vultures in that close. They are among the wariest birds here, along with eagles and ravens. All three probably have to be like that, living to a large extent on carrion killed by predators that could also kill them. Crows are wary, too, but they come closer than the other three. I?m amazed, though, that ravens and crows can be so tame in Ely. There, they have learned that ways of people and traffic and let people come within 20 feet at times. Crows learn the ways of traffic on the highway and calmly walk to the shoulder and let cars whiz by only 4 or 5 feet away and immediately walk back to the road kill they had found. Turkey vultures sometimes feed on deer carcasses 10 feet off the highway with varying wariness about vehicles.

There?s not much snow to be seen now. The open area near the WRI is turning green. Clipping grass is the major occupation of deer now in the week or two before the big variety of tender young leafy plants emerge across the forest floor. Temperatures in the mid to high 60?s are forecast for this weekend.

Thank you for all you do.
