Daily Updates
Eagle, Woodchuck, Sun, Migrants - UPDATE April 22, 2020
22 April 2020
 Print Email
The eagle has landed. It flew in out of the corner of my eye looking huge and landed by a 20-pound piece of suet Bald eagle
Bald eagle
I hoped he couldn?t ignore. He caught me off-guard. I had to reach for my wider lens to get him in the picture. His eagle-eye saw the motion in the window only 10 feet away, and he flew up into a white pine and watched me as I clicked a shot with the long lens. I waited, futilely hoping he couldn?t resist the suet. He flew away.

The sun the last few days make the common grackles glisten. Beautiful. The subspecies here is the bronzed grackle?named for the color of its back.

American goldfinches here are beginning to look a lot like summer. This one has nearly a black crown with a few tiny brown winter feathers clinging on, and has a nearly yellow body with a couple patches of brown yet on the back.

An eastern chipmunk has emerged and gotten busy in the last couple days filling its cheeks with sunflower hearts and making the pile shrink faster than the squirrels or birds do.

The new male woodchuck might have eaten his last piece of broccoli for awhile. When he was done, he disappeared running up the driveway in the same manner he arrived here on the 18th. He was the calmest, most trusting one of them all, and he?s hardly here. We?ll see if he appears again. All the while he was here, I didn?t see the young woodchuck and wonder if he found this place too busy with 3 adults to contend with and left.

Fox sparrows are coming through. They blend in well with the forest floor when they are sitting quietly, but most of the time they are a blur of motion, hopping and sweeping their feet and legs back raking away ground litter to get down to bare soil. Trying to snap a picture, I saw that even when their whole body is a blur, their head is still as if that ability is an adaption to their busy way of life to let them spot movement that might be danger. From here, they will travel another 300 miles north to the southern edge of their breeding range and not be seen in this area until September.

It?s only in the mid 30?s F, but warmth and big change are on the way. Hoping to make Ted happy with visitors soon.

Thank you for all you do.

hi jewelies i dont know what the temp is here 63 in the barn it did rain overnight of course did all that mowing. update pictures are so wonderful. we are so lucky to have wildlife and dr rogers to get the pictures and help them out. he could not fool the eagle eyes wow 20 lb suet that is one big suet. too bad the eagle did not take it save an animals life from it. may be awhile before ted get visitors and he should have his mask on. i saw on the world news awhile ago with everything shut down how clean the air is and how happy animals all over for it and i saw lots of meat killing plants shut down cause of ykw and i love that not tons of animals being slaughter so ykw has done some good.

Good morning everyone- it is 50 here with a bit of ground fog in the field across the road. Sky looks fairly clear. I got rained on yesterday but still got lots of yard stuff done. I took a break and headed to Stringtown. We were out of cheese and called sil. She needed a few things too. They are rearranging their store. going to have a deli like area. Cutting lunch meats and cheese for customers. right now they just have big chunks to buy- no sliced stuff.

most of the customers there were masked and stayed away from each other. I had a friend who had to go to the doctor and they stopped at Wal-Mart and Menards on the way home. She was amazed at the number of people who didn't have masks. She gets respiratory stuff easily so she was careful. She said she was glad they wouldn't have to go out for at least a month now. Our little local grocery store has been so essential to all of us in this area.

wow- how can you get a 20 pound suet cake!! Dr. Rogers must not have racoons. They would eat it up here. Beautiful photos in the update today. I guess the NABC may open on May 1st??  So Ted can have visitors. Can you imagine the size of the mask they would make for Ted. lol.

today is bandage changing day for sil- appointment is for 1:30. up and back with no stops.

Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Water on Their Minds - UPDATE April 23, 2020
23 April 2020
 Print Email
With temperatures in the 50?s and bears in winter coats, a swim was in! Tasha found water and had fun, as "Taught" caught in this 5:10-minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0C0zW3zers.Loon - photo by Ellie Hintze

Yesterday, Ted sat in his tub--maybe reminiscing?or wishing someone would take the hint, as "Pooch" caught in this 3:10-minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na_GSyzLiig. I don?t know how he got the tub in position to get in it. The way he?s looking around, could he be looking for someone to notice and turn a faucet?

I wish I could read animals? minds.

Speaking of water, rivers are open but lakes are only starting to open. Loons are clustered on rivers now as Ellie Hintze saw yesterday early morning near Ely.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- raining here and woke up to a bit of thunder. so glad for the hostas that I relocated yesterday. I spent a lot of time outside but didn't feel like I got much done. I got to sit in the sun in the afternoon. I've been trying to meditate some. In my senior strength class we've been doing that at the end of class pretty often. I have a hard time concentrating on my breathing, etc. My mind tends to stray like Julia Roberts in the movie Eat,Pray, Love.  I keep trying- the sun and a slight breeze made me mellow.

cal- so funny putting a radio in the barn; is it talk radio or what kind of music do sweets and pearl like?

Our trip to get sil's bandage changed was uneventful. From the time we parked in the parking garage- went to the infusion center and back to the car we didn't meet anyone! Really unusual for us. When I dropped her off she said it was nice to get out for a drive and I agreed that also it was good to visit. The road we take to the city has some serious road construction going on. They are replacing 3 bridges that are probably all within a mile of each other. I imagine eventually they'll close the road. Then we'll have to plan for a detour. Five more weeks of weekly trips to the hospital. It is going fast for me.

Getting light and looks pretty damp outside- going to plan B.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Finally a sunny day but rain coming back this afternoon. Still chilly out and forecast for next 10 days is below temps and plenty of rain. Everything is so green just wish it was warmer out.

Cal, good idea having the radio on for Pearl and Sweets. I have always left the kitchen tv on for Molly and Boo. The update pics are always so good! The loon is beautiful. There are a couple grackles that hang out in our backyard. Someone must throw out old bread and rolls because the grackles bring chunks of it to the pool cover where there is standing water. They drop the pieces of bread into the water and soften it up and then they eat it! Isn't that amazing that they know to do that?  Joe Burrow is big news in our local paper today!  The area considers him a local kid. I've mentioned before that he is from southeastern Ohio and graduated from Athens High School which is about 40 miles from here. You know I'm not a football fan but I hope he does well. Did you watch Blacklist last night?

Lupe, I bet you did get poison ivy from the mulch! Both my sisters insist that's where they got their poison ivy! Glad everything went well for your sil.

Ra, my weed eater should be here Wednesday. Finally decided on an Oster oven. Ordered it from Amazon, too, but it won't get here until May 15. Guess it isn't considered essential! Normally we have 2 day delivery from Amazon but not in ykw times.

Have a nice day! :) Stay safe!

Joan very sick today.  All night runs and vomit.  She seems a little better now, and is resting between not quite so frequent urges.
I had all this on Tuesday, and went to ER for the day.  Tested negative.  Was glad, but overheard hall comments about,".... false negatives...".  Could have done without those for sure.
Yesterday at home was very bad for me.  Blood sugar, usually around 140, was down around 45 for hours, and would not come up.  I think they diluted my blood with saline in the ER.  I was really scared.  Doctor said just don't take my two diabetic pills for a while until BS hits 90.  Today is a little better.  133 when I woke up.  So OK now.  Had some cereal and fruit and coffee and apple juice.  Felt good for a while.
Going to try some lunch soon.  Something on toast I think.  With apple juice and black coffee.  Maybe a toasted bagel with jelly.  Maybe a hot ham and cheese on wheat toast with mayo, mustard, and tomato.  I think I can handle it.
So here goes.  Wish me luck, and pray for Joan to handle this as well as I did.  She has some strikes against her I don't have, and needs all the help she can get.

bye for now, and May the Good Lord Take A liken' to ya.
