Hi Jewelies! It's been a bad weekend for us. Friday evening I got a horrible headache so I went to bed right after Blacklist. Woke up Saturday morning headache gone but my stomach was tender to the touch. Felt like I had a giant bubble in there. I ate a bagel and shortly afterwards I had severe stomach cramps. I'm usually not a wuss but this time I cried out in pain. Crow said let's go to the ER. No not going there! Went back to bed and felt lousy all day. Cramps came and went most of the day but especially worse if I drank or tried to eat anything. A simple popsicle caused terrible pain! Went to bed last night and slept all night long. I felt better this morning. My stomach didn't feel so tender. Then I tried to eat toast but had a hard time getting it down. But it was enough to bring on the cramps again. So I guess I'm on a starvation diet now! I really could lose a few pounds. We thought I may have food poisoning but Crow woke up with the same symptoms this morning. Must be a stomach virus or bug.

Jo, so sorry to hear about Joan. Here I am complaining about my problems and poor Joan is going through so much more. I don't know if I could get through all that or not. Hoping she finds relief soon. Take care of yourself.

Cal, great update pics! Hope Jewel shows up soon. Blacklist was a new one and a little different for a change! Does Jim know when he can go back to work? Our governor is opening up up a lot of businesses tomorrow. Robin's boss is opening up their office tomorrow full time. She is livid about it. Our county is considered a hot spot now. The last I heard there were 49 cases and 2 deaths. But gyms, beauty and barber shops, restaurants with outdoor dining areas, day cares, dentist, dr offices and elective surgeries will all open tomorrow. Now there can be gatherings with 5 people instead of 2. Next week there will be more openings. I hope he knows what he is doing.

Lupe, it has been so chilly and wet here that I haven't done much outside. Still to cold out at night to take my houseplants outside. :(  April was not normal. May isn't starting out much better.

Ra, I got my new weed eater last week! And used it twice. The Oster oven is coming tomorrow a little ahead of time! It's so easy to bake a few biscuits or a frozen pizza in. You don't have to warm up the whole kitchen like you do when you use the gas oven. I follow this site on Facebook called Old Houses under $100,00. Last week they showcased an old house in your town! It is called the Schroeder House on Main St built around 1850. Small world!  Glad you and your family have escaped the bad weather! I don't know if our vet is doing vaccines now or not. They were only doing emergency visits. Tela needs her rabies shot. And they both need all the others.

Have a great day! Stay safe!

Daily Updates
Eli, NABC Woodchucks, Liberation, and More - UPDATE May 3, 2020
03 May 2020
 Print Email
Ever since last night, the WRI team has been checking pictures to identify the big mystery bear of last evening. Bear that visited on 5-2We are pretty sure it is Eli, one of Lily?s Beary-Go-Round cubs of 2013. Now at 7, he has grown like a weed, and is a handsome devil (although I don?t know of anything he?s done to qualify him as a devil). Good to see him!

Pond Chatters are capturing stunning screen shots of the woodchuck. I don?t know how he or she got in there, but I hope he or she stays. I?m told the burrows are not far from the rock den. One of the pictures makes me suspect she is a female getting ready to have babies. I?d love to see screen shots in such detail as the picture here as they emerge from a burrow down the line. I don?t know what we can get for food to make sure she finds enough in the enclosure, but if it was in front of the camera, I?d look forward to her and maybe the babies all sharing. I believe they eat a lot like a bear?grasses, clover, dandelions, and the same fruit and vegetables we eat, including broccoli that is so popular with woodchucks here at the WRI. I don?t want us to be known as the North American Woodchuck Center, but a little variety is always nice.

 Woodchuck at the NABC
Woodchuck new male   Woodchuck

Tasha has been the lucky one this spring with freedom to roam the enclosure as she feels, but I suspect that Holly and Lucky and Ted are becoming tired of self isolation and want equal treatment. Now that Sharon is back and has satisfied her quarantine, plans are to get Holly and Lucky and Ted out of lockdown even before the governor?s order tentatively ends May 18. Tuesday, May 5 at 10 AM is the date and time set for liberating the bears by Director Scott and Bear Curator Sharon. Maintaining animal welfare is an essential job, and we are doing it.

Tuesday is a big day. It is the 13th anniversary of the opening of the North American Bear Center, the day of liberation of Holly and Lucky from a long winter, and re-opening of the Bear Center web store online.

Good morning everyone- I am early because I have outside projects to do and rain is predicted for afternoon. it's already windy but 48 degrees.

rues- talk about weird weather; the weather person  just gave frost warnings for Friday night and all but 1 night in the 9 day forecast calls for lows in the 30's. I just got all my house plants out and will bring them all in today. lol  Hubby just got finished (maybe) putting dirt back in the place where they put the water line from the well into the basement. That corner of the house unfortunately is the low point and we can't come up with a plan to route rain away from the house. He did a plan but we'll have to wait for rain to see if it works. Meanwhile i'm going to use the rest of the mulch I had delivered to cover up that spot.

Yesterday I got 8 bags of mulch to finish behind the barn garden. I figured if it didn't match the other mulch it wouldn't matter since i'm the only one to see it and  I can deal with it  okay.

rues- I hope you and crow are better by now; btw- the technical term is fasting (not starvation). lol

cal- I hope someone made our Ted a mask. I bet he really misses seeing people and especially he misses the peanuts they feed him. tomorrow he'll get out of his enclosure. Yay!  Had to laugh at the menu for woodchucks. Not one creature around here eats dandelions- i'm sure of that.

Well- birds are singing and it's getting light out.
Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- 48 and a gentle rain here with little wind- yay! I just saw the weather and it is still calling for cool weather- for the next 9 days- 20 degrees below normal. Lows in the 30's and highs in the 50's. Hubby decided to bring a load of firewood up. We were relying on the furnace but the wood heat feels better. It's hard to believe that I was sitting in the sun on Sunday in shorts and t-shirt on the back porch. Yesterday when I went out I had 3 layers on the top, socks, boots, a hat and ear muffs and gloves. Long pants too. Well- I could drive bertha to right where I needed to put the mulch so it went really fast.  I'm still going to get the rest of that big hosta out this week. I'll need to weed a little too. Oh and the bleeding heart plant that got trashed in the wind and frost has recovered beautifully. I guess I will cover it on Friday night- 20's predicted.  Really glad I haven't given in to the urge to buy annuals yet. Next week---maybe!

Looks a bit soggy out- I don't think it rained hard enough to test hubby's trench idea.

Well- I hope everyone we haven't heard from in awhile is okay and staying at home.

Have a great day jewelies!   I think there is a live broadcast from NABC at 10 AM CT today. I'll be there.

Hi Jewelies! Crow and I are feeling much better today. Robin said there are several clerks at the courthouse that have the stomach bug. So, I think that's what we have. Last Wednesday I went to Walmart, Sams, Piggly Wiggly, Dollar Tree and Rural King. My sis and I didn't spend a lot of time in any of the stores. Just got what we went for and left. That must be where I picked the bug up. My sis said she had some cramps and diarrhea. Thank goodness Crow and I didn't have diarrhea! We must be on the mend because in honor of Cinco de Mayo we ordered takeout from our fav Mexican restaurant! We have only gone thru McDonalds a couple times since everything closed down so we were so ready to eat someone else's cooking! Omg, the Mexican food was SO GOOD! Boo was happy to get his share. Only sad thing was that Mex food was Molly's favorite.  :'( I can't believe how excited we were driving to the restaurant to pick up our food! It was unbelievable.

Cal, my younger sis said she made 17 more masks over the weekend. That makes 40. She had to order elastic from Colorado. It is in short supply here. My mask has dog prints on one side. Crow wears the one that has jack o lanterns on it! Sis used what ever material she had to make them with! Our hair dresser is open for business now. We have an appointment scheduled for May 14. Anne said their phone was ringing off the hook with clients calling shortly after the governor said they could open Monday. Everyone has to wear masks there. Anne said she was required to wear gloves, too. It's been 7 weeks today since we had our last appointment! I look like a shaggy dog! I hate it! Lol! I'm going to have her cut it really short just in case something happens and we have a lock down again!   Speaking of the Blacklist...I read online today that the season finale will be different because they had to shut down production before they finished filming. So part of the show will be comic book like animation! That sounds interesting and weird. Good to see Eli and the wood chuck. You know I think I like the name wood chuck better than ground hog! Hope it stays around. Couldn't find a better place to live. Did you hear that ESPN is broadcasting South Korea baseball?

Lupe, we are supposed to have night temps in the low 30's a couple times this week with frost! Even some snow flurries ! Highs just barely reaching 55 all week and into next week! Yesterday was nice out but today chilly and rainy again. I saw a guy walking out the street this afternoon with a winter coat and gloves on! I've always liked dandelions! I think they are pretty. My neighbor is obsessed with keeping them out of his yard. I'm sure seeing them in my yard drives him nuts!

Hope everyone is well! Stay safe!

Daily Updates
Lucky, Holly, Picnic, and More - UPDATE May 5, 2020
05 May 2020
 Print Email
On this 13th anniversary of the opening of the North American Bear Center, Lucky and Holly got to celebrate by ending their long winter. Scott, Sharon, and Spencer were part of the occasion starting with their 10 AM live broadcast shown here in three 15-minute segments.

On a less happy note, the Lilypad Picnic was been cancelled because of the pandemic, but many are looking forward to an online auction. During the year, people have donated nice items for an auction, and the Northwoods Bear Foundation team is planning an auction that is sounding popular, although it is disappointing that we?ll all miss catching up with the stalwarts who attend the picnic each July, organized by Linda, Jen, Jenn, and Sandie. For more info check their Website or Facebook page (Lilypad Picnic Fan Page - Sponsored by NBF) and/or email the team at [email protected].

Out the window, the male woodchuck that has been here for a little over two weeks loves his broccoli. The picture of his eye shows the window where he is watching me take his picture.

Like the male blossom a couple days ago, female red maple blossoms on a different tree are extending their pistils to catch pollen greetings from the male blossoms. The tips of these branches are also forming leaf buds.

Ruffed grouse
Ruffed grouse
A ruffed grouse that we seldom see was eating beside the driveway, blending into the forest floor. I went outside to get this picture and moved slowly. Instead of running off, the grouse flattened onto the forest floor and then resumed pecking at the ground and eventually left at its leisure. They sometimes rely on their camouflage as they assess situations. I remember decades ago a pumped up male actually attacked me when I made a grouse drumming noise with my lips. I was lying down. To get a decent picture, I had to extend my hand for it to turn to the side to attack and then quickly pull it back to click a picture while he was still sideways to me. I could hardly believe his courage and aggressiveness.

I love the look of graceful gulls flying over looking down to see if there is any bologna available.

Good morning everyone- 41 here, cloudy with no wind. Yesterday was a cool, windy ,rainy, drizzly day. I just can't say what I did-lol- mostly in my recliner. Hubby has relit the woodstove and boy it feels good. I talked to my friend who I walk with- before ykw. she had her granddaughter with her for four days. They got her veg garden planted and she was disgusted to hear the forecast too. Last year she didn't get the garden planted until June because it was wet. She planted lettuce, radishes and onions a couple weeks ago and they are up. We are looking forward to the rec center opening up- our phone conversations are 30 minutes long. Come to think about it most of my phone calls are that long. Amazing especially for someone who doesn't like to talk on the phone.

A couple of weeks ago I went to a local (Parnell) meat shop where they butcher meat and make their own brats. I try to eat only pasture raised critters but I like to support the people who own the meat locker. They are neighbors- sort of- and friends too. After I picked out some brats I spied some thick smoked pork chops. Hubby likes them so I got 2. Yesterday was the day. I had them thawing on the kitchen counter and hubby said we should warm them in the woodstove. So he did- oh my were they good.

BTW - I heard on our local news that one of our biggest meat packing plants (in Waterloo) is reopening tomorrow .  Not with a full crew- just limited- but still- Tyson is trying. So even though there may be a gap in the supply there is no need to hoard meat- I hope!

Well- I listened and watched the NABC yesterday- so good to see Holly and Lucky out and enjoying themselves. The Decorah babies are getting big now- so fun to watch. I've been watching the albatross baby too- seems so lonely with infrequent visits by the parent to feed her.

Rues- so glad you guys are better- did not sound like fun.Isn't it funny the warm fuzzy feelings we get at times for our pets?  So who got Molly's share?

Have a greatday jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  Pretty nice here today... wasn't as hot and stormy as it has been lately.  Last night we had a thunderstorm roll through while I was watching tv and we had a really close hit of lightning.  After that, I noticed my 2 year old fridge was clicking.  Well... I guess the lightning took out my fridge!  When I got up this morning, the stuff in the freezer was starting to thaw, so I called the neighbor of mine that I clean for and asked if I could borrow his hardly used freezer.  So I took the stuff to his house.  Luckily, I have a fairly small freezer, but it was jammed full.  I didn't lose much.  Then after I got home, I realized the fridge itself wasn't as cold as it should be... so I called my neighbor, who also owns the business I clean for, and asked if I could borrow their fairly empty fridge at the office.  So, I took my stuff to the office.  Luckily, I got an extended warranty and they even cover surges, so they're coming tomorrow morning to fix it... hopefully.  I hope they have the part, because I'm not sure how long it would take to get another white fridge.  What a day it's been!

rues... I looked up the Shroeder house after you mentioned it and I know exactly where it is!  It's next to the Burger King in town and across the street from my eye doctor.  It has been empty for a long time.  I'm sorry to hear you and Crow didn't feel well, but glad you're doing better!  Sis, too!  It's supposed to get cold here, too.  Down in the 30's in the mornings for a few days!  Geez...  We've had 29 cases of coronavirus in our county and no deaths so far... think we're doing pretty good.

cal... I have a dentist appointment on Monday.  they called me today and asked if I've had a fever or any other symptoms, and told me to stay in my car when I get there and they will come out and get me when it's time for me to see the hygienist.  I wonder if things will ever get back to normal.  Was Pearl and Sweets good when Joe was there yesterday?  It's fun to hear how many raccoons are in the barn every day!  I used to know a guy who had one for a pet when I was in high school.

lupine... Hoarding meat??  You bet people are going to hoard it!  They sure are around here and the prices are going up, up, up!  You have made me hungry for smoked pork chops!  I love them and can't tell you the last time I had them... probably at least 20 years.  lol  I bought my annuals today, then heard it's supposed to get cold again.  Shoot!

Joho... I hope you and Joan are doing better.

Have a good evening, Jewelies!!

Action Everywhere and a Mystery Bear - UPDATE May 6, 2020

At the Bear Center, there is action everywhere as HappyCub described: ?Lots of Action this evening - Lucky on the Woodchucck at NABC
Woodchucck at NABC
scale and went for another swim, Holly in the cub tree, and Chucky gathering straw for a nest? Tune In!! :) I threw in a pic of our chucky's eye for Dr. Rogers lol. Just threw this in - Woodchuck Eye - for Dr. Rogers. Not the best but Game On! Lol? On Bear Chat Picture Place

She also sent a great picture of the woodchuck there with a big mouthful of grass for bedding?another indication that Chucky is a female and could have babies running about among the bears in a month or two.

Mystery bear    Mystery bear   Mystery bear
Mystery Bear

At the WRI, a mystery bear that people are scrambling to identify. Yesterday afternoon, it came and went. Across the beaver dam on the other side of the outlet, it let us get a picture as it stood on a rock and back-rubbed a power pole, which is a favorite place to scent-mark. Tonight at about 8 PM, he(?) was back, frantically hungry, and got on the scale?120 pounds. Guessing a 2-year-old. We?re looking for reference pictures to identify him and know his sex and age.

Thank you for all you do.
