Red Squirrel, Buds, Sap, and the Lame Deer - UPDATE April 17, 2020
17 April 2020
 Print Email
Today, a red squirrel napped for several minutes on a red maple branch with its head on its paws and eyes half closed. Red squirrel resting

Buds were growing and on the menu. Red squirrel licking sap

Then it fully opened its eyes and went for the second course?sap running and glistening from a twig that had all its buds removed. I hadn?t seen that before.

I looked more closely at the lame deer that is now walking and running quite well. It still slightly favors the left front leg and the lameness apparently took a toll. His spine, hip bones, and shoulder bones are more prominent than any of the other deer, and he?s hungry. I could tell that because he does not tolerate any other deer eating near him. He is agile enough to chase after them now, and wants the food for himself.

Good morning everyone- I slept in this morning after getting up with a painful cramp in my right calf last night. Had to get up and walk around. It's all better this morning. I haven't had a cramp for ages and i'm pretty sure it's because I sat for a really long time yesterday. Sil did really well yesterday. We saw her doctor before the chemo and he is pleased with her progress. She is taking the chemo so well- very few side effects.

We left a bit early yesterday- 3" of snow on bertha but the roads were just wet. The snow was really beautiful and we appreciated the views. We were about half way home before we realized the snow was completely gone!

Time for a late breakfast- then maybe outside to get on that mulch pile. 30 degrees but sunny.

Have a great day jewelies!

Cal, hope you get that modem soon! Will miss your posts! Did you watch Blacklist?

Lupe, glad your sil is doing so well! It was a chilly 52 here today so I stayed inside and ran the sweeper, dusted and did 2 loads of laundry.

Have a nice evening, Jewelies! Stay safe!

Daily Updates
Woodchucks - UPDATE April 18, 2020
18 April 2020
 Print Email
The woodchucks are getting intriguing with their interactions. 20200418 Gathering leaves
Gathering leaves
And there are more that seem to know us than I thought. The one we see most that I hoped was a female I think IS a female?and suddenly popular.

On April 16, she had a suitor-a light colored woodchuck with a piece out of his right ear. I don?t remember seeing him before, but he is very familiar with where the food is here and not that worried about people. On April 17, again, he was attentive to her. Her reactions were to sit demurely as he investigated.20200418 Light colored suitor at burrow
Light colored suitor at burrow

Then today, a 8:58 AM, a new woodchuck came running down the driveway and went into several burrows as if he was familiar. I didn?t recognize him as one I?d seen before, but I might not have been looking closely enough last year. He came up to the second floor deck and went right up the log to where I have sunflower seeds waiting. He didn?t mind that I was clicking a camera in full view close to the window he was nearly touching with his nose. He was a handsome dude without scars. He went near the female, but I couldn?t see much. I don?t know where the other one was.20200418 Handsome new male
Handsome new male feeding

Then the female was alone working on her nest, gathering leaves and carrying mouthfuls into her burrow. I remember 30 years ago seeing a woodchuck doing that and shortly after she had babies at the entrance of her burrow. I suspect we?ll be seeing a woodchuck family in a month or two.

Meanwhile, waiting for the first bear visit. When I got here at 5:30 AM today, I was surprised to see all but a few of the sunflower seed hearts I had put out at dark last night gone. Trying to get the security cameras to work right and not doing very well at it. I don?t know what I missed overnight. No tracks in the little bit of very hard snow that a bear would not have had to step in. Trying again tonight.

Good morning everyone- 40 here and no wind so far. Looks to be a nice day.

cal- good to see you here; and glad your modem is working at least part time. My techie skills are so limited and I have been trying to help my sil get on Zoom so she can be at her church services and meetings. I have no problem getting them on my laptop. Just click on the link she e-mails me and it is fine. Unfortunately she has an apple computer and her whole set up is a challenge to me. We did manage to get it working last week.

I trimmed back my bleeding heart plant yesterday hoping it will recover. I tried to do mulch but it was just too windy. Not fun so i'll try another day.  I'm getting to the point where I want to start visiting greenhouses to look at annuals- but am keeping myself under control. Our governor has suspended school until the fall with maybe an early start to the next year. Really glad I don't have to figure out how to get that to work.  Cases of ykw are still going up in our state. Nurses at the infusion center said that their hospital isn't at capacity yet.

hubby and I are going to our favorite convenience store for breakfast pizza this morning. We get our pizza to go and sit in the car and watch the golfers across the street. Probably no golfers this morning. Will feel good to get out.

One of the many things my sil and I discussed on infusion day was what sports could still be played and televised without fans in the stands while practicing social distancing. We decided on baseball and tennis. It was pretty funny to think of football and basketball without contact. Maybe the NFL would consider flag football. lol

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  May have another storm tonight... It's been a week since the tornado and even with a lot of help,Seneca is still a mess.  I feel so sorry for them.  I have had a wall of ivy across one side of my carport for a long time, but the inside side of it had hardly any leaves and looked bad, so I decided to put up some lattice.  I went to Lowe's at 6am Friday and got it.  I had to cut back a lot of big vines to put it up and when I did that, the whole "good" side collapsed, so I cut it down.  Then had to trim the main part, and cut too far, so the rest wilted and I ended up cutting the whole thing down!  Looks nice and neat, and I have saved myself a lot of future trimming.  lol

lupine...I was thinking about sports without fans, too.  I'm wondering how they will pay their players their millions without ticket sales.  Flag football??  lol  A lot fewer injuries I would think!  Breakfast pizza sounds good!

cal... Glad to see you this morning!  Great pics of the groundhogs!  Hope you get up and running tomorrow!

rues... I watched Blacklist... pretty good this time!  I figure they showed the rerun about Liz's grandfather because Brian Dennehy died this past week.

HI to all!  Have a good day!

Hi Cal! Glad to see your posts! Hope your modem holds out till you get the new one! The other night we had some rain and that caused our power to go off for a little while. The next morning we had no internet so Crow checked everything and found that the router was off. So he pushed some button to turn it back on. We still had no internet so he worked for an hour trying to figure out what was wrong and why everything was wiped out.  Lots of cussing coming from the basement! You know that always helps! Finally he figured out that he had held the button  down too long and it cleared out the router. It was like it was new so he had to reenter all his info. Then he had to reenter all that info into our computers, my iPad and all our Alexa devices. What a chore and pain in the rear! I was surprised that he told me it was his mistake! I'm pretty sure it's one he won't make again! Lots and lots of groundhog pics today! I think they are cute! I'm not familiar with that PBS show. I've been watching The Roosevelt's. It's very interesting. How's Polly?

Lupe, an Apple computer is on Robin's want list! Afraid that's not something Santa will be getting her! My sis gets on Zoom with her rug hooking friends. The first time she did it she didn't realize everyone could see her even though she could see them! Lol! Our senior center is now using Zoom for their exercise classes since the senior center isn't open now. I did see where hackers have hacked into some of the sites.

Ra, at first I wondered why there were 2 Blacklists then I read online that it was because of Dennehy's passing on Wednesday. I always liked his acting. He was 81. I know how that goes when you trim something and it just goes on and on until there's nothing left! That's why Crow won't let me trim his hair! I've been doing a lot of over trimming lately because I don't want to trim any more! So sad about the ones affected by the tornado. I hope they get the help they need soon.

Have a nice evening! Stay save!

Daily Updates
Tasha, Ted, and More - UPDATE April 19, 2020
19 April 2020
 Print Email
I love the new pond cam and Ted cam. Such high quality video and pictures as seen with the beautiful mallard and Ted with his bowl. Ted and his bowl
Ted and his bowl
Also Ted?s foot pads. Good going everyone in getting such good captures. I don?t know why Ted?s foot pads hang on so long, but they?re cracking and hopefully will come off soon. Then he?ll have a few days of tender pads before they toughen up. Here?s an article I wrote about that back in 1974. Click here to see the paper: Rogers, L. L. 1974. Shedding of foot pads by black bears during denning. J. Mamm. 55(3):672-674. Looking at the foot pads in the picture that I think "HappyCub" captured, it?s just like you?re there. Easy to see what is happening.Teds paws
Ted's paws

One of the things most intriguing and endearing to me about animals is any insight they give into their minds, especially if it is a happy feeling, like play, that I can identify with. Ted steals everyone?s hearts when he says his sweet words and backs it up with action?stories I want to put in the book.

Tasha
Tasha plays
Tasha has that knack of stealing hearts, too, as shown in the picture and "Pooch?s" 12-minute video of her playing with the log http://www.viewpure.com/miiCBnkX8o4. She likes to play as shown in the picture of her with the log, but also in the video that "Taught" captured as Tasha tentatively gets in the water and then jubilantly runs out of the pond to end her run with a full headfirst somersault roll. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTLwI4hjwyc

Mallard
Mallard
One of the best things about the Bear Center is the big, natural enclosure that includes many logs, etc., to play with, natural forest, and changing seasons to keep things fresh for the bears. They also love seeing the people in summer and the good care they get. Much of what we see was made possible by many, including the people reading this.

That?s part of why I always gratefully say, Thank you for all you do!
