Good morning everyone- 32 here and just partly cloudy. Rain is in the forecast but i'm planning to get out first thing to work on the mulching. The last few days I put off going out until it warmed up and then it got super windy. I'd rather do the cold and no wind so that's the plan today.

We did a rather long ride yesterday. The first in probably six weeks. We stopped for our pizza- shared a sweet roll and coffee and headed out. The clerk in the store has a mask on as did us and they had installed a plexiglass shield so there was minimum contact there. There were 2 young customers paying when we went in and they didn't have on masks. We sat in the parking lot facing the gold course but no golfers were out.   It was nice just getting out- very little traffic. We made one other stop. for some reason I developed an allergic reaction to something. I have hives on both wrists and one spot on each leg. So itchy. Started Saturday. When I went outside to do some mulch I was completely covered- long pants, socks, boots long sleeves- 3 layers and gloves- hat and ear muffs. Quite the fashion statement. So I don't think it was in the mulch- wasn't anywhere but in the yard and we have no poison ivy, etc. I've been in the yard for 33 years and not had this.
Well- I got to scratching and we found a dollar general store that was open. I was looking for calamine lotion but all they had was an anti-itch gel. So I got it and put it on right away. So glad it worked. Just can't figure out where this reaction came from. I've never had allergies in my whole, very long life. Weird to start now.

cal- hope your repair guy comes and gets your problem sorted out.

rues- I wonder what kind of person gets a kick out of hacking- wish our local gym would do some classes on line.

ra- I've done the trimming thing too. Sorry about your ivy though- I put some ivies in my containers for the summer.  I need to trim my hair. May have to use hubby's beard trimmer.

Getting light out and i'm out of here.
Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- 35 here and clear with no wind. I will take advantage of the no wind and go out early again and do mulch. did about 3 hours yesterday and got quite a bit done.  Need to do around the house today and we need to mow. While I was mulching the bed south of the house yesterday I decided to dig up all my daffodils and separate them. Most of them not blooming well. Seems I always do that- make more work for me. but I do love to be outside now. By the end of May it is too hot for me to do much more than maintenance.

cal- laundry soap hasn't changed; I keep using the gel during the day; took a benedryl before bed and slept a solid 8 hours. I can't believe a racoon drank some kaopectate. Yuck! When I leave the water bowl out over night the coons come and take a bath in it. What a dirty mess they leave. Golfers and gophers- lol.

hubby needs to grocery shop today- fridge is bare. When he washed lunch dishes yesterday he washed out the crisper drawers- empty.  Yesterday on the news there was a comment about grocery stores getting low on frozen pizzas. I do like to eat non processed stuff but we do like Jack's pizzas and have them about once a week. Hubby went to the freezer in the basement to check our supply. So glad- we have 9 on hand. lol We may have to ration from now on.

Just about light enough to get outside- have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  Nice day here!

OMG, cal... I'm rolling on the floor here!  Jim cleans out the fridge!  lol  lol  Poor Brad!  Bet he was nervous just hearing that huge dog barking!  lol   Glad you got your new modem and it's working good.

lupine... I think Cal's right... the older we get the more issues we get with allergies.  I never had a problem with pollen, but the past couple of years it's been bad... especially this year.  My eyes have never been so red and scratchy.  I was trying to get the ivy "stumps" out from between the rocks in my sidewalk with a hammer and chisel, and something slipped and my hand slammed into one of the carport poles.  Didn't know until I took my gloves off that my hand had a big knot on it!  lol  Doesn't hurt, but the whole back of my hand is bruised now.  Pretty ugly!  I think I like the ivy gone... cleaner looking and I won't have to trim it all the time.   ;)

rues...  Didn't you tell us last year about some siding cleaner that you guys used?  I need something easy... and don't want to pay someone to come and do it if I can help it.  What was the name of it?  Did you get it at Lowes?   You have Alexa??  Is it fun?

joho... I hope you and Joan are doing good.

Missing JP and obsver and Eaglette and others... and Nora doesn't say hi often enough.   ;)  I know it's falcon season though...

Hope everyone has a good day!

Daily Updates
A Bear, A Family Squabble, and More - UPDATE April 20, 2020
20 April 2020
 Print Email
The first bear seen in the community arrived at 1 AM today. First bear
First bear
The homeowner had a bag tied so the bear would stand up and reveal to the trail camera what sex it is (a male) and if it has chest markings to help identify him (none seen) as shown in this 1?-minute video. Click here to view. His light muzzle is a bit of a cue, but we?ll have to see him in good light to do better.

Now I want to see one here. Excitement mounts. This is the time of year when we breathe a sigh of relief with each bear we find who has survived another fall and winter.

Gull "The Catcher"
Gull "The Catcher"
Out the windows, other wildlife is visiting. But with Peggy home in Indiana and Donna tied up and unable to come here some days, the faces in the windows make it hard to concentrate on work. I?m the only feeder. Gulls are back in force the last couple days with 8 perched in trees or circling over at once. With the lakes still covered with ice, they can?t find much to eat. That means they are here. It is good to see gulls that probably made long flights to the Atlantic Ocean and are now the same as ever here?like ?8 and 4? named for two dots on the circle of its left iris. He is the gull most comfortable near me, and he pecks loud on the window by my desk until I get up and get the bologna. Another welcome returnee is ?The Catcher? who looks in the window with a stern look (picture) and flies back and forth from the window to the feeding location until I act. He then faces me in concentration ready to leap and catch or whatever it has to do to get pieces of bologna I toss to him like a Frisbie. The gull named ?Six O?clock? from a dot at the bottom of his iris is still coming, but more often without his mate now. I don?t know if nesting has started yet or not.

Out another window, the deer have more pleading looks (picture). It?s hard for them now, too, with not much more than tiny blades of grass to subsist on until full green up starts in early May. Mothers are showing their pregnancies as they eat their way to birthing time at the end of May. The tiny blades of grass in the yard and the extra food we toss out the window is their best bet now. All the twigs I?ve seen around here have already been browsed, so I see their faces and have to respond. They know what it means when I start cranking open the window.

Doe and fawns looking in window
Doe and fawns looking in window
Beaver
Beaver

The ice lockdown on the lakes is starting to ease. This afternoon, with the temperature at 41?F, ice melted around the beaver lodge, and at 5:49 PM, a beaver decided not to self isolate in the lodge any longer. The first beaver I?ve seen here this year was out swimming (picture). It then dove under the ice and disappeared, probably looking for vegetation on the bottom.

Woodchuck biting former suitor   Woodchuck biting former suitor
Woodchuck bowling over and biting former suitor

The woodchucks are a puzzle. On the 16th and 17th, the female sat demurely at her burrow entrance as her light-colored suitor with a damaged right ear examined her. Then yesterday, she was sitting quietly there when the suitor spotted her from 53 feet away (measured on Google Earth) and came running as fast and directly as I?ve ever seen a woodchuck travel. Her reaction? She dove at him and bit him (picture) and then dug her feet into the ground, pushed forward, and bowled him over and was lying on top of him with her head twisted to the left I think to bite his arm (picture). The suitor extricated himself from her somehow and ran away. A few minutes later he came up on the second floor deck for some broccoli and sunflower seed hearts only to find that the handsome new male has beaten him to it. The new male chased him down the steps. I didn?t understand the attack by the female because, from what I?ve read, the male joins her in her burrow for a month after mating until she is almost ready to give birth. We?ll probably figure some of it out as time goes on.

I?ve probably been a little over-anxious to see a bear lately, considering that the first appearance here last year was a male at 12:55 AM on April 26th.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies! We are having March weather instead of April weather! It's windy and chilly again today. The next 7 days will be 10 to 15 degrees colder than normal. Another freeze warning out for tonight. The 3rd one in the last 7 days! This time last year I had my houseplants outside on the porch!

Cal, yay, you got your new modem! That's one worry off your mind!I laughed, too, about Jim cleaning out your fridge! That was so funny! Glad Pearl is ok. That was scary! My sis and I are going to Walmart in the morning. I read where all their employees have to wear masks now. Last Wednesday we only saw  a couple wearing them. Our county now has 42 ykw cases and 2 deaths. Across the river in Washington Co, Ohio they have 65 cases and 6 deaths. So it's out there, which is very scary.  Today our Governor cancelled school for this school year. Great update pics! The deer are precious. The sea gull is so pretty. Poor male ground hog. His day didn't start out well!

Ra, remember that black cloud that hung over your family...well, it came to my house yesterday! First my weed eater quit working and then my Kitchenaid convection toaster oven quit working, too! My two favorite things! I enjoy weed eating and I use my toaster oven almost daily!  Crow ordered me a new weed eater from Amazon but I don't know what to do about the toaster oven. There are so many kinds.  We have 5 Alexas! One in each room except the bathroom! Robin has 3! If I want to know something I ask her and she tells me the answer. I use her as an alarm or timer. If I want to hear a certain song or record I ask her and she plays it or if I ask her to play  a certain radio station she finds it and plays it. If I need a recipe she finds that for me. There are so many things she can do. Robin has hers connected to her phone, which I don't. She tells Alexa to call mom and she does. When we are finished talking she tells Alexa to hang up. We were a little leery about the whole thing at first but gradually we started doing more with her and now she is a just a part of our life! The house wash is called Mold Armor, E-Z House Wash. It comes in a lime green container. We got the first one from Lowe's but then got more from Amazon. It worked on our house and Robin's. The mildew hasn't come back so far this year. It's easy to use. You hook it to your hose and spray it on. Wait a few minutes and rinse it off.

Lupe, hope your itch goes away soon! Every year I always manage to get poison ivy. Thank goodness they finally invented clear calamine lotion. Glad there was Dollar General nearby for you to get something. Dollar General's seem to be everywhere! My older sis never had allergies before either. She has been complaining about itchy eyes and watery nose for a couple weeks now. She has an inhaler because she has COPD and she noticed she was using it more often. She called her doctor yesterday. Doctor told her it sounded like allergies and put her on 3 medications. She isn't one that likes to take meds. So I'm sure she will give me an ear full of complaints over the meds tomorrow.

Have a nice day! Stay safe!

Hi Jewelies!   Windy here this afternoon! Still nice though...

cal... Glad Pearl is ok!!  We had a real nervous horse, too.  I hated riding her, I was glad when we got my horse, so I didn't have to.  She used to try to bite me every time I reached over to feed her grain, too.  We bred her once and when she had her baby, she took it to the far end of the pasture, so we couldn't bond with it.  My hand never did hurt... Just looks bad.   Besides that... I'm tough.  lol

rues... Hate to hear anyone having that black cloud overhead!!  And, something you used all the time, too!  At least neither one of those things cost real big bucks to replace, but still...  Thanks for the siding cleaner info!  I should have asked sooner... I just went to Lowes last Friday... shoot.

Daily Updates
Bears and Chipmunks - UPDATE April 21, 2020
21 April 2020
 Print Email
Different bears have different attitudes about chipmunks, and the chipmunks must have to learn who is who among the bears. It?s the same at the Bear Center and in the wild. Some bears are swatters and some will share.

Jack and chipmunk   Jack sharing with chipmunk
Jack sharing his food with a chipmunk

At the Bear Center, Tasha is a swatter as caught by "Taught" in this 1:18-minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsuwU3ftOBE.

But Ted will share if the chipmunk picks the right moment as seen in this 3:16-minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dZF4JGIeMo "Taught" caught in 2017 that we mentioned in this update https://bit.ly/3eDEhtb.

In the wild, Terri, a bear I walked with some 30 years ago, used to swat at them, although I don?t know that she ever got one; but a chipmunk learned that it could totally trust One-eyed Jack. How do they know? How sensitive are chipmunks to attitude? I have always compared chipmunks to black bears in that each is willing to trust once they know it is okay. Not to brag, but I could see it was okay to trust Jack, too. Same with Ted.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 48 here with rain later; lots of posts to read this morning- love it. Chipmunks sharing with bears- how funny! I watched Ted yesterday when he was fed- a huge bowl of sunflower seeds and 2 carrots. Then I saw Tasha come in to eat and Lucky and Holly got fed. Such healthy beautiful bears.

high in the 70's today so maybe storms tonight. I made a list of outside stuff to do today. Would like to finish mulch today.  We have decided that my allergy is poison ivy probably from the mulch as we don't have any in the areas where I've been working. And even though I was covered I still got it. Both forearms, right hand and a spot on both shins. After I finish today i'll wash all my jackets and clothes in hot water. I'm fortunate in that it has been cold when I've gone out. Usually I have on shorts and a t- shirt and slip on garden shoes. It could have been much worse.

Hubby did grocery shopping yesterday in our local store and said there were quite a few people there. Then he got gas for the mowers- we mowed after lunch- much warmer out then but windy. We didn't have to mow everything. Really looks nice now.

Getting light- got to go before it gets windy. Have a great day jewelies!
