Good morning, Jewelies! It's a beautiful sunny day here. It was 15 when I got up at 7:30 but now it's up to 40. I think it's supposed to get into the 50's. Yesterday was about the same with plenty of  blue skies. Crow was sitting at the kitchen table looking out the window when he noticed an eagle circling over our neighborhood! By the time I got to the window all I could see was the eagle's white tail! He was headed towards the river. They say there are a couple nesting pairs along the river. That is such good news because I don't recall ever having any around here when I was growing up.

Cal, Crow got an estimate today from our dental insurance...it will pay $51.00 of the $8,600 total bill! If his old dentist charges that much, too, then he is seriously considering going to Mexico! :o I knew we had lousy dental insurance but I didn't know it was that bad! On a lighter note...yesterday we sorted out several storage tubs that are stored under the basement steps. A couple of the tubs were full of old VHS tapes. Most were home movies from way back in the 70's and 80's and Disney movies. We had already had the home movies converted to disks. So there was no reason to keep the tapes. We cleared out 2 small tubs and one huge one. Now there is room for us to collect more stuff! Seeing the tapes made me want to see the home movies again so I got out my laptop and put in the disks and watched and laughed and cried. The ones from the early 70's had my dad in them! So good to see him again. It was fun looking at my family when we were all so skinny! Robin was the chubbiest of us all!

Lupe, glad your sil is doing well! There's lots of bad stuff out there that could make her ill. Robin had a mammogram on Thursday. When she checked in at the Woman's Center the receptionist asked if she had been out of the country within the last month. She surprised  her by saying she had. After the mammogram as Robin was leaving, the receptionist stopped her and asked if she would please go to the main registration desk at the hospital's entrance. There they asked when and where she had been and if she had been ill. They were questioning her because of the coronavirus. That's some scary stuff. I worried about her going out of the country at that time.

Good grief, it's 11:40 and I'm still in my jammies! Have a great day! :)

Warmth, Mink, and Deer - UPDATE February 22, 2020
22 February 2020

Mink stripe in window

With the temperature reaching a high of 48?F, Stripe the Mink was on the go, and deer seemed relaxed.

We?re exploring new foods to see what the minks might like. Stripe was good to try the flounder today, but she much preferred bologna. She was good to pause for a portrait outside the open window before coming inside for her buffet.

A doe looked content as she chewed her cud with a sideways grinding motion of her lower jaw. The browsed bushes near her might have contributed to what she is chewing. Eventually, she stood and surveyed her surroundings from under a tree.

I was so engrossed at my desk that I didn?t realize the temperature had climbed so high until the mink stirred me out of my trance. Then I saw the thermometer and knew why sheets of icy snow were cascading from the roof.

Good morning everyone- 32 here which absolutely feels balmy. Not like Key West though. cal- ty for the picture of your niece and all. They are a good looking bunch. Hubby picked up a friend of his at the airport on Friday. He had been in florida also. See now- for my winter vacation i'd be checking for snow pack and head to the mountains. lol Along with all the critter cams I watch-  Crested Butte is on the list too.

Yesterday was great- I sat on the porch for a little while and trimmed my nails. The sun was on me and felt great. Today should be fine as well- high in the upper 40's. A little day trip is in the plan but last night we couldn't decide where we wanted to go.

I've been checking on Decorah frequently- no eggs yet. Two little ones in NW Florida nest- so cute and first time parents who are doing great.
Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Scott?s Musher Life - UPDATE February 23, 2020
23 February 2020
 Print Email
Today was the local WolfTrack Classic Sled Dog Race, one of the races our very own Director Scott Edgett Scott racing
Scott running the racing
has been training for with his dogs no matter what the temperature. This was the 50-year celebration of sled dog racing in Ely. Scott is known for not wearing a hat for the race, but that was no big deal today with the temperature a balmy 38?F.

This is Scott?s other life. Our own Jim Stroner who takes the Bear Center?s calendar pictures was the official photographer for the race and was here two days early checking locations for good pictures along the route. He sent me these pictures of Scott along the route and at the finish line.

Scott crossing finish
Crossing the finish line
I like the picture of the happy dogs in action with their mouths wide open trying to stay cool on this above-freezing day but still running at a good clip at the end of the race. I watched Scott online at the start with the dogs standing in place leaping with anticipation as his wife Cindy helped hold onto them until the official start. En route, Scott was cheered on by Pond Chat Mods watching online from the Netherlands, Ireland, and California.

A little under the weather, this is the first race I?ve missed being at the finish line to see my friend Scott come in, but he gave a good estimate of when he?d cross the finish line, and I checked back online just in time to catch him crossing a few minutes early. Way to go!

Thanks for all you do, Scott.

Good morning everyone- 30 here and no precipitation yet. We are on the northern edge of the anticipated rain/snow band- maybe 1- 3 ".So probably no big thing. Yes cal- that snow in Ely looks wonderful!!!!  And the look of pure joy on the faces of Scott's dogs in harness was great. What a great photo.

rues- I went out to look for daffodils yesterday- not a thing; however, the moles had a tunnel started. Aargh!!

We went to Blain's yesterday- no real reason. We do cross the Iowa and Cedar Rivers so expected to see bald eagles. They were very scarce maybe because it was so warm 2 days in a row. Maybe rivers are thawing farther north.

This year in February we have an extra day- what will we do with it????  celebrate- make someone's day- visit- call- volunteer?????? Maybe all of the above?Hmmmm.

Have a great day jewelies!

Cal, our cable was off for over 6 hours  yesterday! Crow called the cable co and a lady told him there was an outage in our area. She would find out how long it would be and call back. Heard nothing from her. This morning the cable was sporadic so he called again. Tomorrow a "specialist" is coming to the house between 8 and 5! He is trained to work outside and inside. Crow asked why they waited all these weeks before they sent their "specialist". There was no reply! So, we'll see what happens. I know one thing...they better give us a discount on our monthly bill. Crow went to his old dentist today. He pulled 2 teeth out. Only charged $70 to do that. He gave an estimate of $8000 for the implant dentures but Crow told him he couldn't afford that. So the dentist asked could he afford it if he knocked $2000 off and possibly a little more? Crow said that was sounding better! Crow says he is going to go see him in a week or so and get everything written down and go from there. The dentist is an avid bird hunter  >:(. He has 2 German shorthairs, like Molly, a Brittany and an English Setter. He travels all over the country with his dogs on hunting trips. Crow told him about Molly's death and how we grieved for her. He said he understood that and he was amazed that Molly lived to be 15.  Nice pic of niece Jeanne and family! Bet they are having a great time!

Lupe, omg, my front yard is full of mole tunnels! I wish they would move on down the road!

Have a nice evening! :)

Daily Updates
Holly, Stripe, Mild - UPDATE February 24, 2020
24 February 2020
 Print Email
On this mild day (high of 39?F), "Taught" caught Holly sampling snow in this 25-second video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2H9R6ayQAwMink Stripe
Mink Stripe

And here at the WRI, Stripe was a blur yesterday as she came in the window licking her chops and eyeing her buffet, but her eyes were only for bologna. Earlier, she stood up and took a piece of flounder when that was all she could see. Mink Stripe
Mink Stripe
It?s always nice to see her, but spring is coming and she?ll probably be off following the shores of lakes and streams eating muskrats, chipmunks, mice, rabbits, fish, snakes, frogs, and more. Those items are probably why she didn?t show up here last spring, summer, and early fall. Fish are on the mink menu, but maybe flounder is down the list. Brown bears in Alaska favor salmon over flounder, especially salmon eggs and brains.

Thank you for all you do.
