Good morning everyone- cal- how funny- prairie dog shame. He is cute!

Pretty cool here this morning but I can't keep out thoughts of outside stuff to do. I hope to pick up sticks today and get them hauled out. I've been putting them in piles here and there all winter when it was warm enough to be out so it shouldn't take too long. and I need to rake the gravel back into the driveway. Some always gets plowed into the grass.  I know we will still have some winter yet but ra's talk of mulch has me thinking ahead.

The container that I used to put my bird feeder in I believe is done for. Whatever critter has been getting in there at night dug a hole down through frozen dirt and made another hole in the metal. I may take it to the recycle center after i'm done feeding the birds.

Need to dust and vacuum today- yes- it was on the list last week. lol  My goal is to have it all done by game time. Hawks play Penn State at 11 AM. Going to be a tough game.

The sky is getting bright now- really like longer days. And it looks like it's going to be sunny. YAY!

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Hope you all are enjoying this extra day! I baked a chocolate sheet cake this morning and I've already eaten 2 pieces! Lol! I could live on sweets, just like my mom! We had an inch of snow yesterday morning but it melted off by noon. There was a cold wind blowing and it's still here! I think we are supposed to get to 40 today. Next week they are saying we could get up to 4 inches of rain! We, too, have had a lot of rain this winter. That happened last winter, too.

Cal, I like your ottoman! It looks almost like Robin's. Next time I'm at her house I'll try and remember to take a pic of it! That's a nice pic of Jim and Pearl. I hope you are able to ride her a little this summer. But then she might not want to go outside! Lol! I didn't know people kept prairie dogs as pets! We saw a bunch of them when we drove to CA especially on Rt 66. I thought they were so cute! I'll pass on your old ottoman, too! Lol!

Lupe, I don't know how to use a mouse! I've always had a laptop and used the touchpad! Crow asked me one time to lookup for something on his desk top computer for him and I was dumbfounded! I could not get that mouse thing to work! I kept running it off the edge of the desk! I agree with Cal and Ra about how nice it is that you guys are stepping up and taking care of your family members! You two are awesome!

Ra, good to see you! I knew you would be thinking about mulch! Speedway gas station got their shipment of mulch delivered a couple weeks ago! I noticed Lowes was getting the section of their parking lot ready for their mulch! This time of year I start getting excited about warm weather, shorts and flip flops! Funny though last year I started wearing Skechers and forgot all about my flip flops! We could have better dental insurance on our Medicare plan but it would cost more. But still, you'd think they would pay a little more than what they do.

Jo, I'm so happy that Joan is doing so well! I'm going to have to Google that Hungry Bear, too! What kind of dogs does your niece have? I  enjoy watching dogs run the agility course. Did you happen to see the dog recently on tv that decided he was going to do his own thing and go where ever he wanted to during his time trial? It was so funny!

Have a great day! :)

Hi Jewelies!  Nice and sunny today... my 20 bags of mulch are gone!!  I still need about 30 more, but don't think I want water issues again!  Those bags sure were heavy!  I was going to request they bring out bags from inside, but I noticed they were wet too.  Maybe I can talk my sil into getting them for me in his truck.  We're all going out to our local Italian restaurant tonight.  We're going to meet Clemson grand's new boyfriend for the first time.  She thought we should go to that restaurant since he's Italian.  He sure is cute!!  Can't wait to meet him!

cal... I was watching the guy when he was working on turning off the touchpad, but he lost me when he had about 10 different pages up!  He tried a lot of different stuff before he finally got it fixed.  I think I'm going to have to pass on the old ottoman, too.  ;D  There's a show called Friday?  That was a lot of friday's in your post and I got a little confused.  lol

lupine... Nice to hear that I'm giving you thoughts about spring!  lol

rues... Happy Leap Day to you, too!  Yesterday would have been my dad's 97th birthday, also my step-grandson's 14th.  I don't know any leap babies like cal does.  Lots of stuff blooming around here now... daffodils, grape hyacynth, forsythia, breath of spring, some trees, crocus', quince,  and even a violet here and there.  Cool you got to see an eagle at your house!!  I haven't watched Manifest in a long time!  I have about 5 episodes recorded.  One of these days...

Hi everyone!  Have a nice evening, Jewelies!

Daily Updates
Wildlife in the Window- UPDATE February 29, 2020
29 February 2020
 Print Email
In the window by my desk, the wildlife is Streak who stopped by a couple days ago after an absence of 9 days, displacing Stripe who we didn't see that day. Mink streak
Mink streak
Streak was good to pause at the window and lift her head to show me who she is before making a pig of herself. Now it's been no mink for two days in a row. Whoops, Stripe just came in the window at a couple minutes to 8. She even included a piece of flounder in her meal. She's still coming back for piece after piece of bologna--5 so far at 8:10 PM. We'll see how hungry she is after a her absence. Nice to see her. Banjo was last seen 20 days ago.

Wildlife in the living room window are deer, hungry deer, wondering when somebody will get up and put food out. Deep snow like this winter is hard on deer. We didn't keep them waiting.

Altogether, at 80, these animals in the window make me think of Patti Page singing 'How much is that doggie in the window.' How do you get a song out of your mind?

For the Black Bear Field Study Courses, there is a window of opportunity. Things happen. There are now 7 openings: 3 in Class 1--July 5-8; 3 in Class 2 July 12-15, and 1 in Class 3, July 19-22. Spring is almost here. I'm looking forward to the fun of the courses.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 40 here and a bit windy. So it probably will hit 60 here today.  I watched the video of Mom Decorah laying her second egg. She even showed it before covering it up. She is so beautiful. We've had several eagles around here- saw 2 couples soaring and bonding together- so amazing to watch their flights.

Today I finally get the payoff for a bet I made with my friend in December. She is coming to take me to the Red Lobster for lunch. Yum!! Beside the seafood i'm planning on eating at least one of their biscuits.. She invited hubby too.

ra- I did yard stuff yesterday! Well- it was only to cut back my 2 red twig dogwood bushes. They are coming to put in a well on Tuesday. Those 2 bushes would be smushed under their drill platform so I said I would cut them back. He said they would be fine- drilling shouldn't hurt them.  So big happenings next week. Our water comes from a well at my sil's house. I've been saying and we've been talking about drilling our own well for oh- about 30 years. We got close to getting rural water about 10 years ago. The company did a survey and unfortunately not enough of the farmer neighbors wanted it. So we lost out too. I was surprised yesterday when the man from the Drilling company came out yesterday to mark the area and check out the basement too.
He said that the site where they had planned to dig next week was too muddy so they are coming here instead. They are a local company with a great reputation and service too.

Hawks won their basketball game yesterday but it was close the whole time. Two more regular season games then the big 10 tournament.

Time for breakfast- Have a great day jewelies!

good morning everyone- 30 here and just a bit breezy. The 9 day forecast looks great- little precip and temps in the 40's to 50's.
cal- the bet I won was the Iowa and Iowa State basketball game in December. They aren't in the same conference just a huge in state rivalry. I had grilled lobster tail and steak, broccoli, salad and a smashed potato. The baked potato was smashed down but intact. some of the potato was removed and was mixed with lobster- very yummy. I brought half my meal home- well- the whole potato but I ate 3 cheddar biscuits. So very good. Hubby had fish and chips. We went to Wal Mart to get a battery for my bil's pickup- I got almond milk and celery. Just a huge, horrible place to shop. Line to check out and we had to wait in line for the core return on an old battery. Yeesh!

Then to Lowe's to get a circuit thingie so they can wire the well pump into our breaker box.
since we had a 2 hour lunch we didn't get home until almost 5.

In the morning I cut back half of my asparagus patch and had my second cup of coffee while sitting on the porch. it got to 61 yesterday.
I need to get going- today is the first day of the new schedule. Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Antlers, Closeness, and More - UPDATE March 2, 2020
02 March 2020
 Print Email
White-tailed deer in Minnesota lose their antlers in winter, starting in late December and peaking in mid January for big, mature bucks, but some young ones keep theirs longer. Crow and red squirrel
Crow and red squirrel
Today I was surprised to see this yearling(?) still wearing his fork horns. An older deer was nice to then show me the scar on its head between the eye and the ear where an antler grew, was lost, and will grow again.

Crows are arriving back now after their short migration to Duluth and south?the first one I?ve seen here in months. I was surprised to see it feeding so close to a red squirrel. The peace didn?t last, though. Suddenly the squirrel whirled toward the crow, making it hop back a couple feet as the squirrel fled. The crow returned to eating suet.

I heard from Mary Auldrich today from her winter quarters in the balmy Bahamas where she saw a Bahama Woodstar Hummingbird on a nest a couple days ago. We learned that late winter and spring is when they typically nest there. She emailed a picture to prove it. To me, the nest is a masterpiece. It is created from fine materials neatly woven together with bits of lichen. I can only imagine how long it took to make something that smooth and neat.
