Hi ev1,
Beautiful winter morning here.  Lots of clean snow.  Poor robins are flitting from tree to tree for shelter and old crabapples and little frozen cherry sized pears on ornamental pear trees.
I used to think our Robins migrated south, but found out lately that they do not.  They instead find sheltered valleys with seeps and wet patches that do not freeze or snow over and hunker down for the winter.
Joan doing good today.  She is on her puter watching all kinds of nice inspirational videos along with and in between her favorite Beatle videos.  She is really a strong Beatle fan lately.
Furnace is fixed, and working fine.  Took only 15 minutes, while I ran to Drugmart for milk and bread.
Thanks everybody for being here and caring.  God bless those in need.  CUL

Cal, thanks for the Ringo video! I sang along with him! When that song came out, seemed like 64 was a hundred years away! Now I've passed it by 5 years! We awoke to 4 inches of heavy wet snow! Schools were closed. When sis and I went to Walmart this morning the roads were fine. There was hardly anyone in Walmart. But there were several people taking advantage of the pick up service. Yesterday we had to have the cable guy back again because our cable kept pixelating. This time he went up the telephone pole. He had to replace the cable at the pole to the house because squirrels had chewed a section of it! Funny thing, we had been watching 2 grey squirrels and one black one running along the lines everyday for several weeks! We thought they were so cute! We still think they are cute but hope they don't chew the cable anymore! Lol! That was a bunch of people at the parade...a sea of red! :)

Ra, good grief, you got a lot of rain! That's the kind of rainfall around here that causes trees and rocks to slide down the hill!

Lupe, you do have a busy day! Hope everything goes well!

Jo, glad your furnace is fixed!  No fun not having heat or AC. Been there, done that! Our robins stay here year round. Last week I counted 20 of them in a neighbor's front yard. I guess they were hunting worms!

Hi to Nora and Jp!

Daily Updates
Sunshine, Teaching, and the Annual Bear Gathering - UPDATE February 7, 2020
07 February 2020
 Print Email
Today it was more snow and then sunshine to make the birds? feathers glow. About 1:30 PM, it was a quick visit by a happy Banjo who got a whole slice of bologna. Streak stopped by for leftovers at 6 PM.Blue Jay
Blue Jay

The best glow of feathers was the tail of a ruffed grouse captured by David Setterholm. David said the grouse was so focused on displaying to his mate that he hardly looked up when David shot straight down from his deck. Its the very uncommon red color phase that is much more common in the Pacific Northwest than on the edge of Ely where David lives. But I thought grouse mating is in spring. The DNR thinks so, too. Their website says mating peaks in April. I don?t know what this grouse was thinking. Could that be why red phase grouse are so uncommon here? Always learning.Ruffed grouse by David Setterholm

Meanwhile, Judy Thon was in the Twin Cities teaching as expected?after all, she is the Director of Education. People like to do what they are good at, but she got carried away with it today and taught 6 classes, one after another, to reach 144 kids in all. That?s a lot of questions for her to answer. Way to go, Judy, once again.

Good and bad news about the Annual Bear Gathering. This year it will be in the Wabasha Room at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel starting at noon on Saturday May 16 running to 4 or 5 PM. Cost is $35 and covers food with 94 cents left over for table rentals. The email address to register in PayPal is [email protected]. Use the option to pay friends or family so no fee is taken out of your payment.

There will be a silent auction, as usual, so bring an item to contribute. If you email Sarah at [email protected] beforehand, she will fill out bid sheets.

The menu this year is:

Chicken Noodle Soup
Baby Iceberg Lettuce, Sliced Beefsteak
Tomatoes, Sweet Onions, Chunky Bleu Cheese and
Buttermilk Dressing
Pickles and Sours
Classic Deli Chicken and Tuna Salads
Potato Salad and Creamy Coleslaw
Oven Roasted Hand-Carved Turkey and Cranberry
Griddled Reuben on Thick Cut Marble Rye
Thousand Island Dressing
Grilled Hot Dogs
Sauerkraut, Buns and Condiments
Potato Chips
Assorted Deli Breads, Rolls, Mayonnaise,
Yellow and Dijon Mustards
New York Cheesecake, Six-Layer Blackout Cake and
Banana Cream Pie
Freshly Brewed Colombian Coffee
Regular and Decaf
Selected Teas

The last day to confirm is Friday, May 8 (non-refundable). Sarah says if you have any questions, please let her know at [email protected].

The bad news is that Sarah and Dan are passing on the torch after this 11th year of creating this highlight of each spring. Many thanks Sarah and Dan. I can?t say thank you enough! I hope someone picks up the torch.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- it was quite a day yesterday; we left with sil at 7:30;hubby dropped us off and he went to Menards to get a humidifier for other sil in nursing home. The procedure started 15 minutes early but was a 2 hour procedure. I had a book along and read. Hubby came after shopping. Then while we were sitting there my bil came for his procedure. A friend and cousin brought him.
Then appointment with oncologist. Stage 3 lymphoma and he suggested chemo. He needs to check heart function to make sure it can handle the chemo. That test is next week sometime. They'll call Monday for that date.  Then chemo can begin. Meanwhile bil has 2 appointments next week.
We managed to get veggies for our veg plate for the shower and eat lunch before the afternoon appointment. It began snowing on the way home- just flurries. Got home- sat for 45 minutes then put together veg plate and went to the shower. Saw lots of people and talked a lot. It was a different time- men were invited- more like a pot luck- I got to meet the bride and visited briefly with the couple.  I think I mentioned that the groom is my duke's human brother. Duke wasn't there- bummer!

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  What a week this has been!  Last weekend we had a little snow... then we had temps up to 77o... then monsoon like rain... today we had FOUR inches of snow!!  Geesh!

Thursday, the day we had thunderstorms and all that rain, I had to work.  When I was ready to leave, I opened my front door (glad to have a storm door) and there was a giant dog on my porch!  I had never seen this dog before, so I'm thinking Cujo is on my porch.  His head was as big as a bear's head!  I called the guy I was supposed to work for and told him I would be there as soon as I could get past the dog!  lol  I called around and talked to a guy who knew who the dog belonged to, and had the owner call me.  Well, before I could get off the phone with him,the dog left.  No idea where he went and didn't care.  I don't trust dogs I don't know, so there was no way I was taking a chance!

Still don't have my new laptop going.  I'm determined to take it in Monday... Or Wednesday.  lol

Forgot... Today my youngest grand had a meeting here in town at her work place, on her way home after the meeting, she lost control on a curve and went into a ditch.  She was shaken up, but not injured and the car is ok, too.  A kid in her class saw her on the side of the road and gave her a ride home.  She cried for an hour after she got home.  lol  She didn't like driving before this happened, so she'll probably dislike it even more now.  I'm thinking she might think her gramma isn't just kidding when she says how dangerous it is to drive on snowy roads.  One of those life lessons I keep telling her about.   ;)

Hi to everyone!

Good morning everyone- it is 30 here this morning and was 19 when I went to bed. I guess precipitation is on the way. Southeast wind too. Just saw the news- no precip here--probably.
Ra- glad you  got rain but so much and then snow- wow. We have dogs through here periodically- usually our neighbors so we just call and they come get them. Too bad about your grand but good to have lessons from a wise grandma. Need to get that first wreck out of the way and no one injured. I never minded driving in snow but was always leery of other people around me.

iowa basketball saw a win over Nebraska after we lost to them earlier in the season. All of the bench got to play. It was really fun to see the starters on the bench cheering all those other guys when they made baskets. Such good sportsmanship.

We may go out to celebrate Valentine's Day today. hubby is scheduled for his tooth extraction that had to be cancelled last month. That is Friday and bil has appoitmtns Tues and Thurs. Waiting on calls for sil appointments.
We'll see what the weather is like today. We like the Longhorn Restaurant for special occasions or maybe Red Lobster.
cal- I missed that charity tennis match but glad you got to see it. Rafa and Roger are good friends and good for tennis.
Have a great day jewelies!

Banjo the mink made an appearance at 11:47 AM, peering out at the fresh snow tracked by deer going past her hole. Mink Banjo
Mink Banjo
I suspect that when it is wicked cold, she is protected by 2-3 feet of insulative snow and feels mainly the ground temperature that is probably not far below freezing. The hole is near the bottom of the steps going up to the second floor deck that she visited at least three times for bologna today.

Thank you for all you do.
