34 out, but sunny and doesn't feel bad unless a person is in the breeze.  I had our neighbor's dog out while they're up at Mayo.  She had another appointment on Tuesday and they ended up keeping her in.  She might be coming home today.  I heard a lawn tractor while Sam and I were out back and the guy that lives behind them was out using one of those sweeper deals you pull behind the lawn tractor getting up all the leaves he couldn't in the fall.  That really seems different the end of December in NE Iowa!  :-\  Ours didn't get done.  Some others that usually do didn't.  It was a crazy fall, hopefully we get a decent spring after this winter, although other than the cold we've had what little snow we got melted.

Cute kitty stocking Cal.  Glad Pearl is doing so much better!  Loved the dog shame where he was between her feet and killed her lap top.

Oh Jo so sorry Joan has been doing so bad.  I wish you guys could have had a really nice Christmas.   :'(

Hi Jewelies! Yesterday was my kind of winter day...sunny and 67! Today was a little cooler...57 and cloudy. Tomorrow 60 with rain. Next week more normal temps. :( I had a busy day yesterday.  I had a mammogram in the morning. I went a little early and they took me right in. I was on my way home before my actual appointment time! Lol! When I got home I took down my Christmas tree and all the Christmas decorations. Of course left the snowmen out. Then I went outside and finally got all the flower beds cleaned up. I noticed some daffodils were poking up through the ground. I covered them up and told them it's too early to be up, go back to sleep! Today the hospital called me to see if I wanted to schedule my mammogram for next Dec! I declined! I'll worry about that later on in the year.

Cal, I'm so glad Pearl is ok! You always know what to do! It's so scary when our pets don't feel well. Love the kitty stocking for Cleocatra! Love that name, too! I was at Walmart this morning. Wasn't too busy then but I noticed that a lot of their shelves were empty! They had hardly any of the shredded cheese varieties! I thought that was odd! I did buy 3 boxes of Christmas lights 50% off. They still have a lot of Christmas decorations left over. I've never had a Mrs. Smith pie. Enjoy your dinner with Jim's dad tomorrow! Robin and I are going to the ballet tomorrow night!

Jo, I'm so sorry that Joan is in so much pain. I can't imagine. I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Ra, I would love to have a cabinet for my pottery! I just don't have a dining room or any room for a cabinet. I warmed up leftovers for supper tonight. What was leftover this time went down the garbage disposer! Being that we are so close to Ohio, there have been a lot of interviews on our local tv station about the OSU game. There's a bunch of Buckeye fans around here! I like Reese's candy, too!

Nora, my neighbor has one of those riding lawn mowers that has that sweeper thing. Just a couple weeks ago he rode it all over the neighborhood going from yard to yard picking up leaves! He rode it in our front and side yards! Crow was a little perturbed about it but I was happy because that was one job I didn't have to do!

Lupe, I wish we had a Target. The nearest one is an hours drive. They say it wouldn't be profitable in our area! I say it would give Walmart competition. I made another batch of Chex mix this afternoon and I burnt it!  Ick. Crow likes burnt stuff so he can have all of it! Lol!

Neva, I heard on the news that Tucson got snow! Did you get any?

Have a nice evening, Jewelies! :)

Hi rues!  I hope you enjoy the ballet tomorrow!!  Is it right in your town?  Anything like that is at least an hour away.  I'd love to have a Target close, too... and, yes... give Walmart some competition.  You been watching football today?  lol  I bet Crow has!  You did have a busy day yesterday.  I hope you relaxed today!  I got all my work done today, so I can watch football all day tomorrow.

cal... I've been meaning to thank you for the triangles puzzles in the mornings!  Thanks!

27 December 2019

Two onlookers looked particularly cute as they watched me work at my desk and I couldn?t help reaching up and clicking the camera. The red squirrel has a long incisor that reminds me of Bucky. I?ll have to keep an eye on him.Red squirrel

We are already looking for interns for 2020. Blue jay
Blue jay

Interns help people learn at the Bear Center and have a good time. I hear about it on the streets of Ely from visitors who were there.

Director of Education Judy Thon wrote the following:

It will soon be 2020 and the North American Bear Center is already working on finding 9 interns for the summer and fall of 2020. This is a great opportunity for students in the fields of ecology, biology, environmental sciences, zoology and related fields. They get real life experiences with our four Ambassador bears and small reptiles. They learn animal husbandry, public speaking, presentation skills , teamwork and more. The perks are FREE housing and a $1,500 stipend plus a great line on a resume. The Ely MN area is also a great place to explore the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Superior National Forest. For more information go to our web page: https://bear.org/get-involved/volunteer/volunteer-positions/bear-educator-intern/

If you know a student that would be interested in this incredible opportunity forward this Daily Update to them. For more information about the internship program contact Judy Thon at [email protected] any questions will happily be answered.

Thank you for all you do.

hi jewelies it is 42 here raining lightly. 48 in the barn and pearl was so happy to see me to and i was so happy to see her. and really happy to see 3 big piles of poop. when i saw that squirrel in the update i thought of bucky to and we all know how that turned out. dr rogers will keep an eye on it and looks like just the one tooth and straight down. with my hamster he got an extra long tooth and i clipped it back filed it down some. rollie did not really like that but he is a good boy. he was happy afterwards.

hi jp! hope you are doing okay!

hi rues! i have never had a mammogram.  do you have to get one every year?  i still have my moms wreath out on the front door and horse wreath in the kitchen after new years i will put them up till next year. i use to drag out this whole village that lights up. i had griz in here he was wanting to get a drink so i took him back to the kitchen now he is in there whining pretty soon will be the baying. yesterday right before dark i was going to the barn had my big can of dog food fill up racoons and my little possum pans i saw through my cedars a coyote trotting along in nolkers pasture. it stopped like it felt someone watching. i wanted to go to the fence and dump that dog over but i knew i could not way too close to the house and barn and i got my little animals here and sometimes cali goes out front for a treat. so i did not and it started trotting along again. if someone came up in our yard and got our leaves jim would be like crow course they would need a gate opener to get up here and if we released the hounds they would have that mower deal floored! i have wished for a target too i dont know why excelsior cant put one in. lots of people in excelsior. mine too is way down in the city an hour away and i do not want to drive that.  ca has one right down his street he goes there all the time he also lives in the hood i tell him that. hear sirens going all the time. hope you and robin have fun tonight!

hi lupe yay hawkeyes! 49-24!

hi ra oh the baying is starting. jim was up when i came out anyway. he can tell them to shut up. my dogs got it bad for me. :) i hope mrs smith made a good cherry pie. i bought this pie container years ago from one of those catalogs starcrest never used it still in plastic bag. so now i can use it today. just dinner gifts home. another big football game tonight!! ca did not have too much to say about bama. :) i got my first verizon bill yesterday got the simple 30.00 plan and my bill was 80.00 what the 40 one time activation fee well okay i thought that was free for coming over to verzion an of course all the petty taxes they tack on but they all do that. still happy with verizon and coverage i got now.

hi neva i saw that too on the news all the snow wondered if you got it too

hi joho! please keep posting we all are worried and want to know how things are. are you watching the games? oh the baying. i got a pack of wild dogs in the kitchen griz is low howl the girls brownie and penny high pitch baying now just steady barking griz. i have to hurry on here.  boo boo in jims room he needs to go and use the bathroom.

Good morning everyone- late night last night but the hawkeyes played so good. A nice way to end their season. I thought i'd sleep in this morning after being up so late but I woke up at normal time. t is 35 and raining out. Going to be a wet day here. My plan is to stay inside and watch football. Iowa State plays at 11.

Hubby was out moving firewood while it was dry and he saw animal digging signs that were new to us. We went out and looked all around- deep holes in area where he has wood stacked, huge holes where he has an ashes pile which is by the incinerator where we burn trash- never any food scraps in there. We know we have raccoons but these were different. After much deliberation and searching on the internet we feel we may have a badger!  And they are a protected species- hmm...We've only ever seen one here in iowa but that doesn't mean they aren't around. Sure would like to get a trail cam to see. The one we saw wasn't near here- it was along highway 1 between here and iowa city. He may have made a tunnel home in the ashes pile. He made a mess by a tank hubby stores used oil. Some of the digging was in mole tunnels- not sure which is worse- mole tunnels or badger digging!!

johoward- keep posting- you've shared all your fun times; let us share these times too.

neva- yay for snow!

nora- how cool you got leaves swept up- good neighbors.

Have a great day jewelies!

Ra and Lupine ...   I live in a rather large valley, and the snow is on the mountain north and east of town, but it is rainy and wet down here.  For us, it is really cold.  I'm from Massachusetts and know what cold feels like and I don't miss it one bit.... the cold, that is, I do miss Massachusetts.
