Ursula. Quite a closeup.

Thoughts go out to all for a great day as we start our first August weekend.

Marlins had another wipeout at the late part of the game.  Lost 5-1 in late inning.

Two More Bears Arrive, Two More People Needed - UPDATE August 3, 2018
 Print  Email
Among the bears showing up now are old V-Dot and Jenny-also Bow, Jenny
Jenny
Ty, and Daisy. 8-year-old Jenny is unusual. Born to Annie, a non-clan mother in 2010, she was injured at the age of 2, and has since been fearful of other bears. At her favorite community feeding spot, the landowners made her a special feeding area away from the other bears. Jenny had her first litter in 2015 and managed to keep the cubs in tow even with her injured left front paw. She limps, touching only the tips of her toes or curling her left front paw over to walk on the top of that foot. The picture shows worn hair on the top of that foot.

Today, a couple had to drop out of the August 12-15 course to get a pacemaker. I wish them the best. If anyone can make plans this close to that date, please call Judy Thon (612-414-0759) or Lynn Rogers (218-365-4480). FYI, this is one of the Black Bear Field Study Courses that will be part of a TV documentary about them.

At the Bear Center, critter time is popular, whether it is Intern Morgan teaching inside or Intern Josh releasing a monarch butterfly outside. The Bear Center is also popular with wild bears as the staff documented today.

As people got to know black bears in my old study area back in the 1980's, they not only coexisted with them; they became protective of them. Today, I learned that a child who grew up there is now a strong advocate for these bears in Montana. That's an example of why the North American Bear Center wants to expand its educational outreach to young people.

A bear walked across the parking lot at the NABC. After that, Petey and David Ziegller saw it on the trail about 15 feet from them.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- jp- ty for the honey bear, Ursula and the weekend hug
cal- so glad you are making progress with the puppies- about how much do they weigh now? I was concerned that they wouldn't want to get in your vehicle since they were dropped off. They trust you and that's wonderful.

Happy, happy birthday Nora- is that a chester cake cal!

I didn't explain yesterday's photos. The little fruits were wild strawberries- we only had 2 each- save the rest for the wildlife. The pic of the lupines were a but past their prime but I took it anyway- my prime lupine location is later. The trunk of the tree was interesting because the other side of the tree was totally black. We figured this side was where the weather hit and it must have been fierce to cause that erosion. Today's photos are my favorite Mexican restaurant which is in Crested Butte- Donita's Cantina- our primitive campsite because the campground we usually stay in was full. Mountain biking has become quite popular in this area and some of my favorite hiking trails from back in the day are hardly recognizable with all the paraphanalia. Anyhow no choice but to primitive it. Terrible. Then the next day on our way to cross Reno Divide into Taylor Park we saw the chair on the road. Bummer!! Hubby went to investigate and couldn't figure out how the truck rolled- it seemed straight and relatively not bumpy. So we took a more circuitous route to Taylor. Back to Almont and up the paved road. On the way a big sign gave notice that Cottonwood Pass was closed. Oh no- that is where the lupines are. All hopes to get up to them were dashed by the fence keeping people off. We later found out that the road has been closed for 2 summers because they were straightening it out and paving it!!! Well- that means even more people and rv's and 4 wheelers and dirt bikes. Yikes.

Lupine, nice pics! Beautiful flowers at the Mexican restaurant! I wonder how that truck overturned? Suppose he swerved to avoid hitting an animal? I'm enjoying reading about your adventures!

Cal, cool pic of D30 catching the fish! Nice to see all the bears in the update. Wish I could take that course at the center. That would be so much fun. Maybe should put that on my bucket list if I had a bucket list! Lol! You and the pups are doing a great job training. That will pay off in the long run!  Got Robin's wheel fixed on Wednesday and sent pics to the auto club. It only cost $61. I figured it would cost more than that. Robin had our car while Crow took her car to the shop. I had a mammogram so I took the truck. That truck is like driving a Mack truck! Afterwards we met up at Robin's house to exchange cars. I drove our car home and let Crow have his truck back! Backing out of Robin's driveway, he noticed a lady up the street trying to change a flat tire. She was from Clarksburg, an hour's drive east of here, delivering oxygen tanks to customers. She was looking for an address when she swerved into the same curb where Robin slashed her tire last week! Her tire was slashed just like Robin's! She had never changed a flat before but was going to try but she couldn't get the lug nuts loose. Crow changed it for her and told her that our daughter had flattened her tire in almost the exact spot! She thanked him for his kindness and gave him a big hug! He told me he hadn't changed a tire in 20 years or more!

Jp, glad that the shot is helping! Thanks for the cutest bear hug!

Luna

Good Morning group.

The Marlins lost again, 8-3, 5 straight losses. I see that the Royals and Giants also lost.  it's a bad year for Jewelie baseball enthusiasts.

Lily Made the Day! - UPDATE August 4, 2018
 Print  Email
The kids and grandkids, here from Minneapolis and Colorado for a camping trip, capped it off watching gulls catch bologna and meeting some bears. Lily Lynn
Lily and Lynn Rogers
We got a call that RC and her 3 cubs were at a feeding site. We piled in the van and zipped over. We were watching RC interact with her cubs when, through the woods, another bear was approaching. It was Lily! What luck! The bear we all most wanted to see settled in at a feeding spot and went to work. She never gave a glance as I walked over and offered her some prime nuts which she ignored and continued working on her own pile. I stroked her back. No reaction. Donna, Kelly, Colleen, Kelly?s husband Mike, and our four grandkids (5, 6, 7, and 8) joined me near her. Lily looked up but quickly continued working to gain weight, maintain her pregnancy, and be able to make milk this winter. Then the approach of 3-year-old Spanky got her attention. He is known for his odd behavior. Although Lily ignored RC and her cubs, she wouldn?t tolerate Spanky. She went after him, vocalizing as she drove him off. Then she came back calm as ever. Spanky approached again. Lily addressed him. Spanky heard what she had to say and moved off. He circled around behind and is visible in the picture. At that moment, Lily was posing for a picture but she heard a tiny sound, turned and looked. She ran him off for good.

I?m guessing the kids will never forget what they saw and heard as Lily showed her trust of us and her behavior toward Spanky. The family got a look into the bears? world. It made my day.

Thank you for all you do.
