Oldguy, best wishes and prayers for your MIL and family friend..... Thank you for the info on coachwhip. Our first contact with them was at our North Scottsdale home. OUCH! A 3' one jumped off a baker's rack that I had in the front entry for plants. It jumped to strike me as I was placing a plant on the rack. I heard a noise that sounded like a train turned and came face to face with it. I turned quickly and it stroke my right ear. I have a nice small nic on my right ear lobe from it's bit. We removed the baker's rack to the enclosed back yard.. The PO gal returned today, she was delivering a box for a neighbor. she saw me, and told me she decided it was a Kingsnake and wondered if I've seen it. We have boulders lots of wash areas where it could be, hopefully it's left looking for a nice mouse.... thanks for the videos Clinchfield Railroad rebuild is fascinating. Can't stop watching.

Tsk, Rev. Boomer is preparing himself for the serious duty of finding a new pope....  I felt very sluggish throughout the day, but I feel much better tonight. I had chicken noodle soup for dinner. Mike didn't eat the flank steak. This was one that Shannon gave us last year. It was dated July 2024 and tightly wrapped. It smelled fine after it was thawed... my stomach was very upset for the longest time. I've never had such pain before... I threw it away this morning. It'll be awhile before I'll eat meat again.  :-X ... Yes, it's that women's education group. I'm the state Nominating Committee Chair. I'm presenting the ballot of officers for this next working year. Glad it's over...

The PO woman came by this afternoon while I was outside. She was delivering an Amazon box for a neighbor. She said she looked up the snake. It was a Kingsnake. I haven't seen it, but I've checked all the places where it could hide along side the house. I want to be sure there isn't any holes open for it to crawl into the lower patio or house.

{{{Phyl}}} best of luck and prayers for your injections.

Karen, I don't tell my planter box dirt anything, not a whisper. I just let things reseed.  ;D Even my marigolds reseed... Sending gentle hugs for {{{Piper}}}

Baz, beautiful flowers and thanks for a great assortment of music. I haven't heard Tommy James & Shondells in a few years. You did save the best for last.  :-*

Lisa, feeling much better. I saw a good video of Mrs T feeding eaglet, it part of a talk by Mike Fitz. Very good. I'll find it and post it here tomorrow.

Paulie, glad your cabin was okay, compared to everything else you saw. I'm sorry. I pray the surrounding areas will be able to rebuild soon.

Kb, the dog was very cute, sweet oldster. LOL!

Good night!

Sweet Iris had #3 egg today and it was stolen by a raven... Good night sweet girl, see you in the morning.  :-*

Lani, glad you could eat a little soup. Hope you feel recovered soon. Oh, poor Iris... her 3rd egg was taken by a raven. Her 1st egg was taken by a raven. I must have missed it. What happened to her 2nd egg?

Good Morning Beakers!

Phyl, I hope you and Jim and especially Maggie are doing well, I miss your morning posts...

Lani, so glad to hear you are feeling better! The universal cure, chicken soup... Oh my, that snake, and your story about getting nicked by one years ago... EEK!!!  Good idea to check the house for entry ways, NO SNAKES IN THE HOUSE PLEASE! Oh sweet Iris, three eggs all gone. So sad....

baz, Iris's second egg was almost taken by a raven but it broke before the raven could fly away with it. Thanks for all the music! and that sweet video at the end! Thanks for the falcon article!  Your Calibrachoa planter looks beautiful!

kb, that video is me most of the time I watch tv later in the evening...I have missed the ending of many tv shows...  :o

karen, so glad to hear Piper is feeling better!

Lisa, I agree, no giant zinnias in a flower bed, they would be good along a fence or the side of a house or shed. The smaller ones are the Thumbelina variety.

Paulie, great news on your cabin! I bet it was kind of nice to have an evening with candlelight and the quiet noises of night in the forest...  Sounds like it was a pretty bad storm!

tsk, I have thought about the same thing with my high school girlfriends that I get together with every summer... And will I still visit Albion after Mom and my Aunt Linda are gone. I am not that close with my cousins that are close by, my sisters and I grew up far away from all of them with Dad being in the military. BAZI   What a fascinating experiment about parrot face timing .  Lots of dedication by the researchers as seen in the video. Just like we know our cats, they really know their birds.  Thanks  I love your plantar and I hope to get the same pot this year for my front porch  LOLOL   I used to have a copper plantar on my back patio - I would call it oblong and probably used to store wood on a fireplace hearth - I would plant about 15 Calibrachoa in it close together - It was gorgeous every year.  ( bottom of the plantar rotted through)   That was a very clever test box for that falcon.  So much we don't know about our wildlife...  Good tunes  ;D
Love of all living things .  I'll vote for that!

PAULIE   What a harrowing adventure for you both.  Glad your cabin was still standing!!  I will presume you keep nothing in the frig between visits?  Dodged another bullet!!

LANI   I so remember that story about the snake on the Baker's rack.  :o  Lots of researching in your new position I would expect?
Glad you are feeling better...

KB  Hysterical boxer  LOL

CLYNN   Earthy green AM today  ;D  Yes  tall zinnias along a fence would be perfect

Help on some questions.

I'm not understanding what is  happening at N1 area.  Not positive/sure if it's the N1 or N2 area - or even if it's N1F or N1M. And since I'm questioning - Why is there a nest being built now?  Too late for this season and there's a good chance that weather will damage what is constructed or a new pair will claim area by 2026 nesting season?

Unlike some of us on line, I'm not an avian scholar, only started deep learning here 2010, so not much learnin' gained.  Amy Are You There?????

Puff - This is a tree in the front horse pasture/rfight behind Willard's home across the creek, that HM & HD started to build a starter nest in last season.  My personal opinion, this is HD and a different female, as I think she looks different than HM.  When HM & HD started on it last year, it was a few sticks, and they headed back to their nest over the bluffs.  This nest looks to be taking a good shape, as plenty of sticks have been brought in as well as nesting.  Why is a new nest being built now?  If it is a new female....pair bonding!  I have seen some signs of it.

Never saw the "bonding"  but have seen two perched together at times.  Also, saw evidence of Trout creek and the cliffs above/beyond that - just good to know my guesses are good.  Thanks Lisa for the info.  Lots of news and new behaviors to learn this season; and, a lot of nests and pairs of which to keep track.

BTW - Just to brag - I am now enjoying fully leafed Crimson King.  So beautiful!!!

Not bonding as in copulation, but bonding as in both working on a nest, him giving her a fish meal, etc.

some bounce

While I was in the basement all day yesterday I did my monthly restock and purge (bring upstairs for use)  of the vegetable cellar. I discovered a two month out of date jar of avocado dressing that had leaked some of the contents on to the shelf paper. EEW! I guess I am stocking up too much of certain items.

Lani... we went to our favorite all day diner some years ago and I ordered the liver and onions. I guess that is an item they don't turn over very often either. I was sick for a day.

Past Royalcam parent news

The parents (GLY and L) of Manaaki have one of the older chicks this season at Plateau, this is their 4th chick.

YRK (parent of Atawhai and Lilibet) and her new mate also have a chick at Wet Rock Track. At 31 years of age, YRK is a very experienced breeder, having raised 8 chicks (including 2 foster chicks) previously. The two female chicks from Plateau and Wet Rock Track are older than the Royalcam chick and have been very healthy weights.

Good Morning,

baz and karen, Very true what both of you said and thank you about cabin.

Lisa and Lani, Thank you.

Lani, Oh my sorry that meat made you so sick. That's a nasty feeling. Good you had some soup and it stayed down I hope.
Oh my no way to snake!!!! I can't even look at pictures of them and you're looking for one. You're brave in my opinion!  Eeeuuuuu

Phyl, Good luck with your Euflexxa injections. Euflexxa is good and has helped my knee a lot.

clynn, Yes honestly it was nice with just candlelight and the quiet of nature. It was cozy. Well except for when a few thunderstorms rolled through and one was particularly strong. I like thunderstorms so I didn't mind except some lighting and thunder pushed their limits. Charlie was not a fan. I slept like a log and Charlie said I snored. Lol  ;D

tsk, Thank you and unfortunately the upper refrigerator had both doors filled with condiments and some misc on fridge shelves. The freezer was full .. both deep bottom and pull out drawer. I took pictures of everything to submit to insurance company before emptying and cleaning it. I won't be stocking up like that again. Lesson learned.

tig, Darn it to the mess on shelf you had to clean up.

Paulie the NWS has officially declared the weather event on 04/29/25 was a Derecho.
The 1st one recorded so far this year.

Derecho definition from the NWS:  https://www.weather.gov/lmk/derecho

Some more detailed reports on the event:

https://www.weather.gov/ctp/Derecho_04_29_2025

https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/new-york-texas-severe-storms-tornadoes-hail-april

A simple cabin trick for the freezer and power outages > Take a small clear plastic cup and fill it about 3/4 full > Let it freeze solid > Place a Quarter in the center on top of the ice in the cup.

If the power goes out long enough for the Quarter to not be sitting anywhere but on top of the ice it means power was out long enough for the water to melt and refreeze when the power came back on.

Likely indicating that the power was out long enough for the food in the freezer to have defrosted.
It should be considered suspect and it should be discarded. The fridge too.

Unless you and Charlie want to spend the weekend in the Loo.   ;)

You are indeed very lucky that the cabin did not sustain any tree damage.   8)

I found some pictures of your cabin that you posted back in Oct of 2023 in Cheers and you very wisely cleared the lot of trees a good ways back from the cabin. AKA wildfire and severe storm damage insurance.   :)

I hope you don't mind if I pull the pictures forward to share here in the Beak Room.
It's a slice of PA heaven I'm sure.   ;D
