Hello beakers

Today started with snow (1/2 in) and cold - lower 20s - sun came out for a few hours and melted most of the streets/sidewalks.  Temps started to drop around 3pm and will bottom out near 6 by morning.  Back up above freezing for the weekend with rain.

KB - sounds like a good plan - hope it goes smoothly

Found a late night post from Amy this morning in my regular mail about the onslaught of eagles.  Great post Amy.

How do eagles stay warm in cold weather?
Each species experiences the world differently and eagles have capacities that are far different from ours. How do Bald Eagles survive an Iowa winter without adaptive clothing and central heat? A cold January morning coated our eagles in frost and left watchers wondering how Bald Eagles survive an Iowa winter. In general, wintering animals – including humans – need to retain body heat, stay dry, and take in enough calories to support winter’s increased energy demands. We humans put on

There was a link to connect with that wasn't transferred.

  December 11, 2024: It’s an Eagle-Palooza!
Welcome to the Eagle-Palooza! But where did all those eagles come from? Our camera operators reported three eagles this morning: HM, HD, and an unknown adult. All three were seen perched together in a tree to the north of the hatchery – a little unusual, but nothing we haven’t seen before…at least until about 1:50PM this afternoon, when 35 or so of their best friends showed up! David Kester went down to the hatchery to check things out. He reported

Good Morning Beakers!

Puff, wow on the Eagle-Palooza! Word must be getting around that Decorah is a great place with a fish hatchery! David Kester posted this picture of the event on FB:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoVvjPoEvu4

What Is A Group Of Eagles Called?
Like many other birds, groups of eagles can have different names based on the behavior they’re exhibiting. For example, a group of eagles in flight is called a “soar,” and a large group of eagles, no matter what behavior they’re exhibiting, is called a “convocation.” Lastly, a group of eagles in a nest is called an aerie.

Lani, oh those sleeping puppies are so sweet... It's 7 right now, high today 15 with light snow this morning. Brrrr!

oldguy, thanks for the links, will watch them a bit later this morning!

Phyl, Mom made each of us an album with pictures and keepsakes from birth through high school graduation. I am going to find some more old nostalgic pictures of Christmas's past!

Thanks for compiling things Phyl.  Also, to clynn -   That's the word I couldn't think of  convocation.  Gaggle for geese.

It's great that we have a great local partner in Dave Kester.  Thanks for your quick trip over Dave.

And for both Amy and Dave - So nice to have you on site and a willing asset.

Well well well.

Drain guys left. It's not my drain but rather an air lock in the vent from the toilet.
We walked out to the deck to look at the roof vent

Has at least 2 inches of ice covering it.
Just a perfect combination of fierce winds and very low temps since yesterday combined with hot air and voila. He's seen it 40 times out of 5,000 calls in the last 5 years. So not every cold spell will produce this.
No roofer will get on top of current roof with ice/frost, severe temps, and heat it off, but natural temps and sunshine will. Just charged a trip charge.

So no drain cleaning In fact this tech suggested to wait till it melts (above 32 this week end I assume weather predictors) and then if toilet works that's definitive of the diagnosis.
It's just a slow flusher as it can no longer just use gravity as there is air locked in the pipes. Does flush slowly just because a lot of water is pushing it.

Will purchase a new toilet once this clears....the older toilets sometimes just don't function properly as well.
To whomever asked, yes we will purchase a taller one.
A toto drake is the kind of toilet we will buy and have installed.

SWFL Eagles ~ Wind Gust Lifts & Spins F23 Around! M & F23 Keeping Eggs Warm & Dry From Rain 12.11.24 - video by Lady Hawk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoLMnWWy2aE

Dec 11, 2024  #southwestfloridaeaglecam #baldeagles
Cam 1 is back online mid morning finding M15 incubating the eggs. However, there is no panning or zooming today from cam 1 & the other cams are offline. They are being worked on & hopefully will back up tomorrow!

F23 returns to the nest for an incubation switch. While on the nest, F23 starts to wrangle a big clump of moss and tries to spread it and move it around while incubating - quite the challenge - the wind was not helping either!

F23 starts to zip (preen) her tail feathers and then bam! A wind gust lifts her up and spins her around the nest! Better keep your tail feathers down F23!! M15 arrives with a thin stick and he steps on F23 and puts the stick on her back. She gets it off her and gets up and heads to the attic for a break while M15 takes over incubation duties.

The weather starts to turn rainy and the wind increases as M15 is on the eggs keeping them warm & dry. F23 comes back to the nest and takes over - you can see how dry the nest cup is when M15 gets up! F23 then takes over keeping the eggs warm and dry in the rain. ♥

A little while later, F23 gets up and goes to the attic vocal - calling for M15. She drops back down to the nest and back up still vocal. She returns to the nest and we hear M15 is in the upper branches vocal. F23 leaves and M15 comes to the nest to incubate the eggs. M15 stays on egg duty until F23 returns near dusk and takes over the night shift.

We are now officially on Hatch Watch! The eggs typically hatch between 34-39 days of incubation and today Dec 11th,  egg #1 is 33 days & Egg #2 is at 30 days. This means that on Friday Dec. 13th, egg #1 will be at 35 days so we will be looking for that external pip! Egg-citing days ahead! 🎉

To see the highlights below, please click on the timestamps to advance to that portion of the video.
