The role of feral goats in Maui's fires.....lani, is this true?
You may not be able to read the small print, but basically:
Feral goat grazing has contributed to the decimation of Hawai‘i’s native dry forests, making the landscape more vulnerable to fires, argues a new Science paper.

Lisa - yes I feel fine this morning....probably should head out and either mulch or pick up more leaves in back yard which will be my true test.

Oh and Lady Hawk announced early this morning that all 33 chicks have fledged from the albatross colony.
Great job!

currently 51 - warming to 72

Hi Puff  :)

Hi Baz  :)

Lani - I didn't realize Sadie had such a rough beginning in her life - so happy you & Mike came into her life, as obviously she has the best, loving home with you.    How nice that Sadie gets such a warm greeting from that couple on your walk!! ;D

Phyl - Glad you shared the Beak's well wishes for Jim. :)  Cute morning gif!   Thanks for 'Nature'.   Like the Newman pics - especially his morning 'stretch'  :)

OG - Thanks for all you do!

Hi Karen  :)

Hi Tig  :)

Hi Lori  :)

Tsk - You might need to turn on some AC today! ;)

Clynn - Pretty pics/gifs this morning!  So true about how good OG is to help everyone in the Beak - love the 'Mr. Know It All' comic - and I do remember that cartoon!! ;D
Sweet pic of Helen :-*    So glad for the rescue of the GHO entangled in the net - thank you to all involved in the rescue!  By the way, I have the same Raptor Resource Project print on my pull-over sweatshirt as the fellow doing the rescue!

Kb - Cute pup this morning!  That is good you are familiar with the dogs, pets in your area - I've always heard the saying 'be aware of your surroundings'!  Definitely get more Mace!

LisaG - Does Bandit & Misty ever see Pepe thru the window?!

Everyone have a nice day  :)

Good Morning!  A chilly 67 degrees today but will go up to 84! WeTher in Valdosta and in Mobike is usually delightful during the Fall.  This is the time of year the locals loved going to the beach!  Tourists gone and the weather very enjoyable!

Thanks OG!  I have taken both ends off the flashlight and nothing!  Shall wait for your post after 4!

Clynn, I love the painted pumpkins in your post this morning!   Would hate to throw them out when the rot sets in!

Lisa!  Do you think Pepe is spraying your visiting Kitties?   Tell him to behave or go some place else!

I do not remember any toppings on casseroles except for buttered bread crumbs!  No green pepper in the meatloaf  as my dad did not like it!  Ketchup and bacon on top! Not fond of that dinner!  Lol. Ate chips with dip!

kb - Oh you better not over do it!

E4E - Yes, I think M&B both watch the skunks out there.  Misty might have been hanging with them before we took her in...who knows!  ;D

karen - I hope Pepe' is not spraying the visiting kitties.  I will have to block my gate again, and then he won't be allowed to come back in!

Royal Albatross - 10/3 All 33 chicks of 2023 have fledged  :-*
The remaining 3 chicks fledged yesterday in the strong winds. Godspeed Albatross chicks!

This is the highest number of chicks to fledge from the colony. A big congrats to all their parents, Sharyn and the Rangers👏

Good morning Beakers!
Morning Lilbro, Blschue, Lori, Clynn, Tsk, Lisa, Karen, Oldguy, Puff, Eagles, Kb, Tig, Baz, Phyl, Peep, Jaspurr, Pink, Jilltosa, BL, Eburg, Weasel, Ezee, Bggolden, T40, ssrl, Maxie, Nrstooge, Omasawyer, Paulie, jicaji, LB, and All!

Eagles, the RRP t-shirt has a cool design. It would look great on a pullover.

Lisa, I didn't think about the alert setting off our pets. Sadie will freak. She hates when the smoke alarm peeps. She won't come back in the house for quite awhile... I'll turn off everything.

Kb, sweet pup... I sent you a pm about the article.  :)

Clynn, Sadie barks at the coyotes who are howling at the moon or catching their midnight prey in the light of the moon. And the pack fights over whatever. Sometimes she senses them before the coyote howls.... And during those moments, she's right on our bed, and then she lets out a sudden high-pitch sharp bark that sends Mike, myself and the cats to the ceiling! Mike wears a cpap mask so imagine that!  ;D .... cute pic of Helen.... wonderful GHO rescue by RRP Dave Kester. Gorgeous owl.

Phyl, I'm so glad for you that Jim is doing better, no soreness.... I keep seeing that right side of the vehicle in my mind. Very glad for you both.... Two or three years ago, Mike hydroplaned his car on the SR87 southbound milepost 242 during a rainstorm, of course it was totaled and he walked away from that. That particular area has accidents there several times a month. So there must be issues with that particular area of the road.... thanks for nature vid.... nice pics of STLbf.

Fat Bear Week has arrived. Meet Katmai’s top contenders.  https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/10/02/fat-bear-week-2023-contenders/?pwapi_token=eyJ0eXAiOiJKV1QiLCJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJyZWFzb24iOiJnaWZ0IiwibmJmIjoxNjk2MjE5MjAwLCJpc3MiOiJzdWJzY3JpcHRpb25zIiwiZXhwIjoxNjk3NjAxNTk5LCJpYXQiOjE2OTYyMTkyMDAsImp0aSI6IjJmMTlmM2JmLWY2YTAtNDMyMS04YjBhLTM4NTVkOTk1NDc5YiIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3Lndhc2hpbmd0b25wb3N0LmNvbS90cmF2ZWwvMjAyMy8xMC8wMi9mYXQtYmVhci13ZWVrLTIwMjMtY29udGVuZGVycy8ifQ.PuhumQWgzAfs78HjTcnrM33IH8vBOLJtb7Fr19lSfMc

A legend synonymous with Fat Bear Week, 480 “Otis” is back for the 2023 competition — and shockingly big, all things considered. Otis is roughly 27 years old, making him one of the oldest bears in Katmai. The godfather of Brooks Falls emerged in late July emaciated and largely toothless. He disappeared for a midseason walkabout, then surprised fans with a reappearance at the falls on Sept. 9 looking absolutely engorged. “G.O.A.Tis” now packs a paunch worthy of his four past titles.

some bounce
We have been exploring videos and the LG help library since yesterday afternoon. The dryer kept shutting off after 5 minutes. We learned about sensors near the lint trap and also about drying a big load and/or using the manual settings for a small load. All is well but I will finish laundry tomorrow. I want to watch our Twins in their first playoff game this afternoon.
BAZ... I watched Coco G. play in China overnight on the tennis channel. Great match.

Lani, great news from the Royal Cam! A banner year! So glad they all successfully fledged and I wish them many full meals on their adventure! I also have a funny visual of Sadie howling in the dead of night and you and Mike shooting up out of the bed!  ;D

T40, Fat Bear Week is back on! Yay! I think Otis has surprised everyone...still going strong!

tsk, I loved watching Captain Kangaroo cartoons, back in the 'old days'! Boris & Natasha, Tom Terrific and Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog, with the evil Crabby Appleton, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Mr. Know-it-All, Sherman and Mr. Peabody...are there any I forgot? Stroke, Natasha, Stroke! So funny! Wait, wasn't there one with a Canadian Mounty and the girl always getting tied to the railroad tracks? Got it!  Dudley Do Right, Sweet Nell and Snidely Whiplash! And the Fractured Fairy Tales!  https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=youtube+snidely+whiplash&mid=A907D45228A85B1498D8A907D45228A85B1498D8

E4E, how cool to see your tee shirt on an RRP celebrity!

Lisa, oh no, Misty may have been hanging with the skunks! Only because she was homeless and pregnant, poor girl. Again, bless you and Jeff for taking her in and now Bandit has a girlfriend!

Karen - I could not find any additional info on that flashlight and we do not have a similar product at this time.  My guess is that the batteries are contained in a holder and you are seeing the end of the holder.  Hold the flashlight body with ends removed and act like you are trying to get the last bit of ketchup out of a bottle - try this going both ways. Do not use any metal device to try to remove the batteries - risk of damage to electronics inside of flashlight. There are 4 AA batteries inside the flashlight, in a 2 long and 2 wide configuartion.

Good luck..

Lani - Probably best you do for Sadie's sake....we are turning off everything too tomorrow! :)  Wow, 33 Royal chicks...amazing!

tsk - Loved Rocky & Bullwinkle!

T40 - Love the pic of Otis, and wow 27 yrs old!

tig - Good luck to your Twins!

clynn - Thanks for the info on the Ring of Fire solar eclipse.  Misty is black and white like the skunks, so she might have thought she belonged to their pack.  ;D
Thinking of ((willi)), and your pic of the door greeter.  Gorgeous pic from SWFL!

Thanks Old guy!  The body of the flashlight that holds what I assume to be the cartridge that holds the batteries is rubber!   It adheres to the cartridge very tightly, so no shaking it out!   I rolled it down about an inch but still cannot pull it out!  If I get it out, I am not sure how I would get it back in!    True dilemma!  I am thinking that it is disposable!  It is very heavy.  The person who brought it here is going to call be soon.  Yesterday she said it is very easy, just tap it a few tomes!   My tapping and shaking do not work!   Lol.  Thanks!

Good news on old Otis and the Royal As!  Prayers for a successful journey for all of them!

Clynn, I wonder if the white pumpkins are ceramic?

I suspect that the batteries have leaked and swelled - if the cartridge has come out at least a half inch, you can use a small screw driver or needle nose pliers to get it the rest of the way.

Here is a short video on how to cleanup the flashlight from the corrosion...

T40   Thanks for posting the contenders.  Looks like the favorite might be 747  Colbert  ;) ;)

CLYNN   Gosh  why can I remember that very cartoon (Dudley Do Right) and not remember the name of the person I just met 10 min ago  ::) ::)
As kids we loved Fractured Fairy Tales.  Stunning shot of "Lady E"

KAREN   I can't wait to hear how easily the battery case is removed.  Seems to me to be poorly constructed?  We have several of the small LED flashlights around the house - to find fallen pills, a dropped earring backing, a stick pin , Lulu's toys under furniture  LOLOL  they are different colors, about 3" long and a nickel size in circumference.

OLDGUY   that was a good video.  I've been in that situation.

Got a hair cut this afternoon and I think it has shryunk since I got home!   Good thing, it will grow!

Piper does not react to thunder, fireworks, or other loud noises!  Will see what she does tomorrow!
