Oh, I forgot... Beakers may have seen a blurb about this on the national and local news... but for those who haven't heard about it, there will be a nationwide emergency alert test this coming Wednesday - going out to mobile phones, TV, and radio...

Here is a description of what will happen, and what you will see and hear (just scroll past the pesky embedded ads - the story is not long):
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/10/01/emergency-alert-test-what-to-know/70981620007/

Thanks Baz! I didn't know about it.  :)

Old Guy, foes Menards sell chargers for Guidesman flashlights?  I have two of them but no charhers!  They were presents and one of them has died!  No Menards here!   Thanks.

BAZI   That moon lights up my bedroom as well.  I love it  ;D   I just presumed all tuna casserole had crushed potato chips on top  LOL  Think that was the only way Mom thought we would eat it  LOL    I knew about some of those no-nos for the disposal .  Hard enough time remembering what's on the recycle list and what is not.  So I hardly ever use it - mostly rinsed plates and bits of cat food.    Thanks for the heads up on the alert system for Wed.  I'll let Tim know

Karen - how old is the flashlight and how big is it?  The flashlight all came with a cord to use for charging - just like phone cables.  The cord type changed over the years and depending on the size of the flashlight.  The charging unit itself was the same as that used for android smart phones.

Here is a link to the current flashlight sold - most older units came in similar sizes with cables for charging
https://www.menards.com/main/search.html?search=guidesman+flashlights&skipKeywordInCategory=true&brandName_facet=Guidesman

This is an YouTube video talking about the rechargeable phones - this was posted 3 years ago, so for the older models
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyuN1mKsZZY

The charging port is located near the power button - here is a link to identify the USB type needed to connect to it - the other end would match to the port on any charger unit you may already have (either USB-A or USB-C)

Old Guy, thanks!  The first link got it!  Turns out it is not rechargeable and takes 4 aa batteries!  It is a 700 something , tactical ,metal and rubber, black and red!  Now to figure out where the batteries go  and how to get to them.  I am thinking they go under the end with the button that turns the flash light on and off.  I have unscrewed this part and there is a red circular thing in the chamber that does not move!  There are tiny screws in this.  Am I right in assuming I take them out and proceed?   A move for tomorrow!
Apologies to the beakers for taking all your time but this is a great instrument!  No Menards here!  Old Guy is the expert!

Karen - on most of the Guidesman flashlights either the lamp end or the tail end will screw off for easy access to the batteries.  Some will have both ends screw off, but only one end will give direct access to the batteries.  My store does not have the model in stock - I work tomorrow, I will check to see if we have something similar with instructions.  Check for a post after 4pm with an update.

Tsk - Sounds like a fun day!!

Puff - How are you doing?!

Kb - You were too kind for the two dogs coming up on your Ollie - you would have had every reason to spray them - not just the air above them!  Anyway, all turned out good in that you & Ollie remained safe.   Make sure you always carry your Mace/Pepper spray to protect Ollie & yourself.    I would be your & Ollie's walking partner if I lived close to you! ;D   I know some folks who carry bear mace on their walks - and they feel very safe.

Lani - There was a time when I would go to Olive Garden and buy a bottle of their salad dressing, but now I buy it at Safeway!   Thank you for Sloth updates & info - I love them!   Good link you posted about what to do when an off-leash dog approaches.   Awe, poor Sadie has been thru some scary situations and thank goodness you will do what you need to in order to protect her.

Tig - Yes I agree to your note to Kb;  get more mace.

LisaG - Oh no, Pepe showing up in your yard  :o

Hi Baz!

Hi Karen!

Hi Lori!

Og - You are always so good about helping everyone in the Beak - Thanks so much for always being here. :)

Beakers have a good night & sleep well. :)

Tsk, Sadie was a very abused dog. But as long as both Mike and I are calm, and affectionate with her and the cats. She is fine. There's an older man and woman that absolutely adores her. When she sees them on our morning walks, her body wiggles all over in sheer delight and off she goes...  and I can hardly keep her leash in my hand. LOL!!! But, I run with her to greet them. It gives her such joy to love them and they love her.  :-*

Baz, the full moon has kept the coyotes busy and dogs barking, Sadie being one of them.

Lisa, not even the delicious smell of ham and beans soup can mask Pepe!  :-X  sorry

Oldguy, thanks for helping.

Hi Eagles, I'll look for the salad dressing at Safeway.

Hi Karen, Puff  :)

Good Morning Beakers!

Last day of this Indian Summer, 87 today, then a couple of mid 70 days, then 58, 59, and 66 for the highs Fri, Sat and Sun! Sat night low 36. Brrrr! May have to turn the heat on, still have the A/C on today!

Phyl, Newman is a hunk in the Falcon world, and what a survivor he is!  Love that morning picture, how unique! Hope Jim is feeling better... A witness! There must be some reason cars have an issue with that spot in the road! My Mom also put buttered croutons on top of the tuna noodle casserole! Mom learned all that stuff when we lived in New Mexico and you were in CA, so it must be a SW thing? We were the same on the navy beans! Did your Mom put onion and green pepper in the meat loaf and ketchup on the top? My sister Cathy and I would each have a little pile on the side of our plates, we picked each and every green pepper and onion out of the meatloaf!

Lani, sweet Sadie is a gentle soul, you were the one meant to get Sadie and love her.  Your patience with her has surely paid off, she is a happy dog! Thank you for sharing the story of the older couple she loves to see... Sadie barks at the moon? How cute!

tsk, I'm with Phyl, buttered croutons on the tuna casserole! How about the Hashbrown Potato Casserole?  Crushed buttered corn flakes top that one!  I agree, oldguy is our go to person for advice on so many things! Do you remember Mr. Know It All from Rocky & Bullwinkle?

oldguy, thank you for being our Mr. Know It All!

kb, sorry you had such a harrowing dog experience, hope you and Ollie are feeling better today... I never see loose dogs around here, knock on wood.

Raptor Resource Project - We got a call from the Decorah Police Department last night regarding a Great Horned Owl tangled in a soccer net at Luther College. When we arrived to help, the net had been cut but the owl was still entangled. RRP's master bander David Kester removed the net from the GHO's wings, body, and neck in expert fashion before checking it for injuries and setting it on the ground to recover. In no time at all, it was up and flying! Thanks to the Decorah Police Department, Luther College, and whoever reported the owl!

Cute pup!

Eagles4 - I'm sure you would be a dog walker buddy with me if you lived here...

Lani - such a sweet "love story" with Sadie and your older couple.

I don't see loose dogs either from inside my house even though I'm constantly looking outside when inside.
I also don't see them when driving in my car.

I think it's seen when you walk a dog in a residential neighborhood..for me, it's almost a mile.

Furthermore my city has a very high concentration of dogs, um cats too.
Just my block alone and only my side of 10 houses has 8 dogs...one of the two apartment complexes across the street from me is a dogs building...probably 10 of them that I've seen.
When I walk my guess is from doing it forever and seeing dogs inside and outside their homes, that there are at least 6 dogs per block both sides and probably more. I walk at least 7 blocks one way and a long block one way..so double that.

From my point of view from this experience but really don't know for sure the problem stems from:

Homeowners with far too much responsibility to adequately be responsible with their dogs..not secure fencing for example, and a very high push of dog rescuers pushing their dogs. New dog owners untrained and then just plain ol don't really give a darn anyway.
Yes, you can have too many of them as my own Vet asserts...too many rescuers in one area.

My city is also pretty tolerant and not enough enforcement...cats are allowed to roam free and I don't think they go around and look to see if every dog is licensed for example.
They are aware however of all the complaints about loose dogs.

Good Morning Beakers

tsk - If you can't find any let me know, I do not mind sending you a few boxes.

baz - Waving to ya!  Thanks for the link to the emergency broadcast.  I needed to know time to turn down TV....Bandit will freak out, as he freaks with just the weather alerts.

E4E - Yes, Pepe'  ::)

Lani - Haha, you are not....nothing can mask Pepe's smell.  :-\

Phyl - Yep, Pepe' is back.   :D  Thanks for the Nat 365.

clynn - Aww, sweet Helen.  Thanks for the RRP post...WTG, Dave!  Love those pumpkins!
