Since no one here subscribes to Nat Geo digital magazine.  I just thought I'd share  the short article for this awesome photo.

Indian-American wins National Geographic ‘Pictures of the Year’

"A bald eagle arrives to steal a perch on a tree log that offers a strategic view of the shoreline at the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Alaska. When other eagles drag freshly caught salmon in from the water, these bystanders swoop in to take a share. "Hours of observing their patterns and behavior helped me capture moments like these,” says photographer Karthik Subramaniam, a software engineer with a passion for wildlife photography."
KARTHIK SUBRAMANIAM

PUBLISHED FEBRUARY 17, 2023
• 7 MIN READ

“Whenever there’s salmon there’s going to be chaos.” This was Karthik Subramaniam motto as he camped out near the shore of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Alaska, waiting for action.

"It was the final day of his week-long photography trip and just a few hours before his ferry departed, but the software engineer-turned-hobbyist photographer stayed, watching as bald eagles swooped in and out of the fishing grounds. Haines, Alaska, a southern tip of land sandwiched between two inlets, hosts one of the largest congregations of bald eagles in the world every fall, when around 3,000 arrive in time for the salmon run.

Subramaniam noticed there was a log where a few lingered. This choice spot put the eagles in proximity to the shore, where their peers would sometimes arrive with the spoils of a successful hunt: a freshly caught salmon. When a fish appeared, the bystanders would descend for their portions.

As Subramaniam trained his lens on a branch, there was a commotion: an incoming eagle swooped in, intimidating its current resident, and claiming the prime spot. He titled the resulting image “Dance of the Eagles” as an homage to a fictional dragon war in George R.R. Martin’s novel A Dance with Dragons, and submitted it to the National Geographic Pictures of the Year contest.

For years, Subramaniam has been photographing landscapes and his travels, but, in 2020, grounded by the pandemic in his San Francisco home, he started experimenting with wildlife photography. He scoured the local natural reserves—driving an hour to Point Reyes National Seashore and walking the city’s parks—in search of birds and other creatures. Hearing that two bald eagles were nesting on top of an elementary school two hours from home, Subramaniam began going there on the weekends, camping out for as long as it took to capture them flying out to hunt.

The patience he learned in that trial period paid off. On Friday, his photograph of the eagles in Alaska was announced as our grand prize winner, earning it a spot in the May issue of this magazine. What Subramaniam appreciates most about the photo is the tension of the moment. “It opens up the question: what happened next?” he says. The reality is less mysterious: the triumphant eagle got bored when no salmon appeared and soon surrendered the spot to the next hungry observer."

Look very closely ...bottom middle edge if nest top just behind the straw 'twig'---a tiny grackle beak. Looks like there might be at least two chicks.

karen - Trying to nibble on a few things, since we had an early dinner and I can't have any solids after midnight.  I can have apple juice till 9 am, so bought me a few small bottles to drink.  I will pretend the apple juice is my morning coffee.  ;D

tsk
- Wow, that sounds like a nice variety Tim has in the garden, but I am with you...that is alot of work when you can buy it at the Farmer's Market.

Phyl - Thanks  :-*

I am off to read, but will check back in morning.

Have a good night, everyone!

HAPPY DAY, BEAKERS!  :)

((Clynn)), oh no about ((your Mom)) falling! I hope she is doing okay, and will mend quickly.  Hard work at Kay's!  Nice to be able to make some donations along the way, too. Is there a Habitat For Humanity Re-Store there? Some of those stores would love to sell some things you might want to donate, too... they make for good used-stuff shopping for lots of folks - don't tell Ed!  ;)  Your enclosed deck is looking great!  I would put a sleeping couch, or hammock, or such, out there! Great for naps, and real night snoozing, too. Wish I had a sleeping porch!

((Lori)), Zippo flaps hello back to Destini.  I'm thinking that is not Destini's "confusion couch" - she doesn't look at all confused.  ;) :-*

((Tig)), heal!!  :) ;) The thought of getting in a pool with an open wound gives me the shivers. Glad you're staying out for now. Take care, and look forward to your fishing trip!  :D

((Lani)), your lemon honey drops and TLC - perfect for Linda and her mom. Lots going on in your family now.  :-*

((Karen)), back to the closet... ugh, I need to do some closet sorting, too.  I hope your hard working HH is the one there today, and not talking too much.  ;)

Phyl, did Jim get your new plants in the ground this weekend?

((KB)), what's done is done, hard as it must be to see.  Try to let it go, and look forward to enjoying some new plantings.

Oldguy, gotta love Walter Santi and his videos! Hope it was a fun and relaxing time at cards last night - win, lose, or draw.  :)

T40, funny stuff!  :D

BL, did you catch up with your boat captain friend while you were in the OBX?

((NR)), you're staying busy! Your garden planting sounds wonderful!  I hope you enjoy the bounty!  :)

((TSK)), yum on all the good eats Tim is planting! Mmm, mmm, good!! We used to joke with our mom that her yummy garden fresh produce from our backyard was probably the most expensive fresh veggies ever!!  ;D

((Lisa)), Jeff's a keeper!!!  :-*  And so is that pic of him in the Kitty Playpen!!!!!   ;D ;D ;D ;)  Maybe it's time to just release the hounds! ... er, I mean the kittens!!  ;D :-* 8)  I know you are counting down the hours till your procedure tomorrow. I'm sure it's going to go great, and you are going to feel like a new person after it!!  Hang in there!!  :)

Hi to Puff, E4E, and All the Beakers!  :)

Take care, and have a good evening, Beakers.  :)

{{{Lisa}}} I;m confident things will go fine.  Remember those kitty Mhz's really do heal. Let them cuddle  and purr near you head.  ;)

BaziYes. Jim did get the Spanish lavendar and purple salvia planted. And, I got some coreopsis yesterday. Gonna inquire about the Arizona Sun version as I found them at Lowe's last season.

KAREN  Even tho the Farmers Market is $$  - ultimately cheaper if you add in Tim's efforts at getting up and down from the ground and the lugging of topsoil and miracle gro and the watering/weeding, efforts at keeping critters away. etc.

PHYL   SOAR does amazing things for sure.  Great shot of the eagles  Subramaniam made a good choice switching to wildlife  :o :o  Enlarged the pic and saw the beak - good spotting

LISA   Good luck tomorrow  :-*

Bazi  they are the most $$ veggies ever ::)

some bounce
Aw... I thought Camper was just going to mow the front but he did the whole yard. I pruned a couple spruce twigs that always surprise us when we mow and then I gave the mower deck a good clean. I think he could tell I was pretty low energy today after all I did yesterday. Good news bad news... I had lathered my wound with aloe gel yesterday... It healed a lot of the scrapes but it dried and some of the bandage stuck. Ouch. I washed it well and rinsed with plenty of cool water, then applied Vaseline and fresh bandage. Phew.

It will be good to sleep in and rest this week.

Good Morning Beakers!

Another full dumpster at Kays, that's 3 for the garage. But it is done! I wish I had taken a 'before' picture of it. It wasn't done when we had the 'hoarder's' cleanup three years ago, so it was really bad. Kay's sister is coming back on the 29th and will leave on the 2nd. She will get a realtor and have that person get people to clean and do a few minor repairs and paint where needed. We need one more dumpster for the upstairs. It's all been gone through so just needs to be trashed. Then Debbie will set someone to haul off the big things we can't do, like the bed, couch etc. She also has a washer/dryer upstairs that needs to go. So Diana and I are almost done, just getting the small stuff from upstairs and pitching it in the dumpster.

Lani, oh Dewey is going to miss you all, especially Sadie!  Sweet sleeping bear cub...

Phyl, love the sweet mice, all covered up for the night! What a stunning NG picture of the eagles!

Lisa, prayers for a smooth and easy procedure this morning...and a nice breakfast after!

E4E, I talked to Mom yesterday, she says she doesn't have much pain, she just looks awful! So nice that you can visit with your Mom and Sis often! My sisters live in Oregon and Texas, and Mom is 8 hours away, so we don't see each other very often. But we do call weekly or more! And I text with my sisters!

baz, I don't think Ed has been to the Re-Store. I thought it was all construction type things for houses, like doors, windows, sinks, cabinets etc. If there's more I will NOT tell Ed!   ;D

tsk, I agree with you, for all the work and $$$ Ed put into his tomatoes last year, the cost was about $3 for each cherry tomato! We never did get any large tomatoes! Maybe the crop will be better this year.  ::) Bella always wants to go help Papa water the tomatoes!

SWFL - Sue Bruhling - E22 and his Little Friend Ms. Mockingbird!! Look at the Look on her face!! IDK? Could it be a female that has a Big Bird Crush on Handsom E22 ❤ and that's why she won't leave him alone?? 😉 Lol!! 🙂 Thank You! Desiree Deliz's Photography for sharing your Pictures with us! ❤

Good Morning Beakers

I sure wish I was having this coffee and goodies this morning.  Jeff was kind enough to drink his coffee and eat breakfast in the other room.

clynn - Sounds like you all really had your work cut our for you at Kay's.  I am hoping Jeff will want to stop at Red Hot & Blue for a late lunch/early dinner after my procedure, but a Cracker Barrel breakfast for dinner sure sounds good, too. Beautiful pics from SWFL!

Lani - Thank you.  Awww, Dewey....will Aly stop halfway on her drive to Medford?

E4E, tsk, Phyl, baz and all - Thank you.

Will check in when I get home.
