When does a Decorah female's "window of fertility" usually open? I ask because while HM & HD are indeed a mated pair, actual mating must occur at the right time for the M and the D of their names to become a reality. Am I violating the No Worry Zone? I'm usually the one posting Trust The Eagles on the SWFL site, but I am concerned about this pair.

Lisa and STL - Thank you, both, for the good info and tips! ;)

lil, this is my opinion, but since they are a new pair that is going to be hard to answer.  We really don't know anything about the pair.  We don't know if they have had babies before, or if this is their first nest etc.  I guess we have to trust the eagles.  :)

In a recent blog, Amy had some good numbers and dates for Decorah and DNN.  And I seem to recall that it takes about 2 weeks from successful copulation to egg-laying, on average, for bald eagles in this part of the country. And, of course the hormone levels for both male and female have to be high enough for "success" to happen, and it's too early for that.   Trust the Eagles, a perfect mantra for all us watchers!

This morning, HM and HD were on N1 quite a lot of time, just picking and moving a few sticks. I did not see any new nest material delivered.  My favorite pic so far today is the statue pose by HD, pic at about 11:30AM.

Keep watching, Phyl!  HD and HM spent an hour or so on T1, with a little twittering, before HM flew off to the Fishing Corner.

Here's a red-bellied woodpecker, male, about 11:00 this morning, briefly and not very clearly.

The rewind at Decorah is on a short cycle, only about an hour and a half.  Do we care why?

STL, the MOD on Explore chat posted this the other day.  I am sure the Decorah feed has been reset too, and that is why the rewind isn't very long.

FYI -
The youtube feed (what we are watching here) for DN has been reset. This happens periodically. Unfortunately, it clears the 12 hour rewind. So it has started over and will "rebuild" to the 12 hour capability again.

Lisa, I just learned that I can reply to only one post at a time, not mine and yours. In any case, thanks for mentioning that we don't know about HM and HD. Thanks to RRP, we are privileged to watch this nice young couple that moved into the neighborhood. They are likely first-timers, which accounts for the small nest. We all have to learn. As the Explore motto says, Never Stop Learning. I enjoy your snapshots there, where my Explore name is "Sassybelle".
