I am delighted that DH2 has fledged, but I don't understand how that kid will eat. Instinct goes only so far before training and experience are necessary. Is it possible that the parents are bringing food to DH2? Why doesn't the fledgling return to N1, where there has always been food available? Thank you, tulsa, for your vid of HD this morning.

HD2 remains elusive today.  Well, it's a Holiday after all.

About 6:00 AM, HM was perched along the bluff upstream from N1. HD brought a fish to the nest, to the Y, and back to the nest. Nothing attracted HD2 to come for a meal.  Maybe later.  People at the hatchery area might be deterring HD2 from landing nearby, not deliberately, but just human presence.

N1 is in need of nestorations!  See the hole dug by HD just this morning, in the pic with the lonely dead fish.  Plenty of time for re-building before next season.

As I was going thru rewind this morning, I see the cam ops spotted DH2 on the pine to the right of the visitors center last everning. A couple birds were harassing DH2, and flew out.  DH2 has no trouble getting around the hatchery.  ;)

I've been watching/waiting for someone else to post - nothing.  Wondering about our solo eaglet.  Whatever is in its future?  Whatever lifestyle will develop?  Will it be more of a loner?

Saw her soaring ALONE above the cliff earlier.   Noone was there to try out their wings and to show off.  She did fine, but. . .

Not seeing any return to nest tree by HD2. Parents are trying to tempt her back.  Not interested?  Not hungry?  Already getting her own?  Lessons?  Has she had any coaching?

Haven't heard any, but have there been any plaintive cries to any other eagles, or any answers?  Will there be any migration?  Will she stay where she's comfy or explore the big world on her own?

One solution might be banding her to get a clue of her behaviors???  No mention of this at all yet on forum pages.

DH2 – Out and About!

Yesterday's discovery of DH2 was so exciting that we could hardly ask for more. By mid-afternoon it was pretty hot and we didn't really expect much activity. But you can never be sure when or where the eagles will make an appearance. We spotted one of the parents flying northeasterly from the nest area and over the bridge. It made several lazy circles over the corn field north of N2B before disappearing from sight.

Shortly thereafter, DH2 appeared from the same area, flying in the same direction. She was being pursued by a number of red-winged black birds and she turned right and flew over the area where N2B stands, apparently in an effort to escape them! She circled back over the hatchery and disappeared in the area behind the nest tree for about an hour before reappearing and heading southeast and up to the bluff. She flew amazingly well, easily cleared the heights of the bluff and followed the ridge line only to disappear over the hills south of the hatchery. We were overjoyed to see how well DH2 is progressing and how she is expanding her reach!

Today was very quiet for most of the morning. However, around 11:00 AM, we discovered her in a dead tree at the north end of the bridge. She was being harassed relentlessly by a red-winged black bird, but seemed unfazed by his repeated attempts to get her to leave. We were so fortunate and grateful to get some shots of her in good light. We hope you enjoy!

Thanks to Darlene and Glenn for sharing DH2's fledgling adventures with all of us who can't be down in Decorah! We'll be holding our fledgling fundraiser on Wednesday, July 5th! Come join our special chat and, if you can, help us keep our streams running and our research and education programs going!

DH2 has made their way back to nest tree.  Hasn't come in nest, but is on branch below.

Lisa, great to see DH2 back near the Y and N1 this morning!

Also DH2 perching on a snag upstream from the nest area about 10:00.
One of the parents was perched in a pine tree farther upstream for a while around 11:15.  Beautiful flyoff at noon, back over the Y, over the Pond, and toward the Pond bluff area, all on the rewind.

Early morning, HD swooped at the Pond and caught a trout, which he brought to the nest.  No sign of DH2, so HD ate part of the fish then flew away with it, upstream.

July 7, 2023: DH2 on the Y-Branch!

Who's that eagle on the Y-Branch? It's DH2! As one of our chat mods noted, DH2 appears to be saving us work with a little tree trimming this morning. It's wonderful to see our eaglet back on the nest tree and in the nest!
