LOON FIGHT
Loon Territorial Fight
Jul 14, 2022  Three loons, 2 fighting then one chases the other out of the area.  We believe these were two males.  The current male territory owner is in his first year, having driven off the previous male in 2021.  Having just had a successful hatch of two chicks, a fight for territorial rights was a good possibility.

The two chicks were stashed far away and the fight was on.  At the moment, we don't know who won.  Only the female is in the area and she retrieved the two chicks.

Seems loon cam extended range picked up a fight today

Loon Chick Rescue
July 14, 2022
An intern from LPC rescues an abandoned chick and brings it back to the nest.  It takes two tries, because the chick imprints to the kayak but after the second drop off, the mother loon takes over and corrals the loon back to the nest.

The chick had been abandoned by an unbanded male, who hasn't been acting by the book.  The chick was in the water, clinging to a buoy for four hours before the rescue took place.

The WRAP

Loon Territorial Fight
https://youtu.be/tQbQ_KBLh8I

My theory is that chick 1 we called Stormy, he hatched during a storm, was off nest and away for 4 hours while chick 2 hatched.  So #2 had sole possession of raft that 4 hours.  That is one reason he didnt submit to his older sibling.  The chick fight looked a lot like his Dad's real fight.

July 23, 2022 UPDATE   :'(
Loon cam people said Mom, Dad and one chick are at the brooding area.  I do not know WHEN they got over there or exactly HOW a chick was lost.  Eagle is a guess.
There is no official update yet.

Welcome to LPC's LoonCam 2!  UPDATE: (Sunday 3:30PM)  Egg 1 hatched 9:59PM Saturday, July 9.  The chick appears healthy.  The second egg hatched Sunday, around 3:30PM.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hggPzB1jKZE

This YouTube live stream features a loon nest in the lakes region of central New Hampshire. There were two eggs on the nest.  Hatches were predicted to be July 8-10.  The first egg was laid June 11, at 18:51:25 and the second egg on June 14 at 9:21:36, or 62 hours apart.  Our blogger's precise hatch predictions (and he has a good track record) is: Egg 1: July 8, 10 pm. Egg 2: July 10, 2 am.  During incubation, hatch, and before leaving the nest, anything can and has happened.  For much more information on loons, see our web site at https://loon.org/    FYI, the LoonCam 1 pair did not nest this year due to territorial issues and is no longer streaming.

Thanks for posting 2023 here.
I was unable to access RRP after changing my email.
Suddenly July 27 I was able to get back in.  GOOD!

Mom, Dad and both chicks sailed happily off into the sunset!

I posted details and pics on bcaw

RAFT CONDOM
May 18, 2024
Canada goose pair were on nest acting like they chose it for their nest, so the loon people put a condom on the raft!  They wrapped it in screening.

Boy are the geese mad!   ;D

Another pair of geese has laid eggs on their other raft.
